The cast of writer/director Marc Lawrence’s still untitled romantic comedy has just expanded by two. J.K. Simmons and Chris Elliott will joining Hugh Grant, Marissa Tomei, Bella Heathcote, and Allison Janney in the project set to begin filming next month in New York.

The untitled rom-com is set up at Castle Rock.

The Plot:

In 1998, Ray Michaels (Grant) was on top of the world — a witty, sexy, Englishman in Hollywood who had just won an Academy Award for Best Screenplay. Fifteen years later, he’s creatively washed up, divorced, and broke. With no other options, he takes a job teaching screenwriting at a small college on the East Coast. Although the idea of teaching is less than thrilling, he hopes to make some easy money and enjoy the favors of impressionable young co-eds. What he doesn’t expect to find is romance with a single mom (Tomei) who’s gone back to school.

Simmons will portray Dr. Lerner, Chairman of the University’s English department, a family man who takes Michaels under his wing.

Elliott will portray Jim, a Shakespeare professor and next-door neighbor to Michaels, in search of that certain someone.

It’s coming back… Nerdist Industries and Lucasfilm’s Course of the Force will once again find runners participating in a relay to raise money for charity. This year’s run kicks off at Skywalker Ranch and travels down the California coast all the way to the San Diego Convention Center. Course of the Force will be held July 9-16, with the end of the relay timed to the start of the San Diego Comic-Con.

And as they did with the inaugural run in 2012, Course of the Force is teaming up with the Make-A-Wish Foundation (LA, Greater Bay, Orange County, and San Diego chapters), with 100% of the registration entry fees going to support the charity. Make-A-Wish kids will be involved in the opening ceremonies, closing ceremonies, and in the event itself.

Nerdist Industries’ Chris Hardwick is once again hosting the event.

‘Conivals’ will be set up along the way, allowing Star Wars fans the opportunity to “celebrate their love of the Saga with live entertainment, expo booths, giveaways and much more.”

“Our plan to run at Comic-con screaming with a lightsaber worked beyond our wildest dreams. People showed up! Lots of them! In cosplay! And we were able to grant more than 1000 wishes for Make-A-Wish!” explained Chris Hardwick. “Last year we started in Santa Monica, this year, Marin, and hopefully next year Tatooine.”

Runners each handle a quarter-mile segment of the 500-mile course, passing off the Course of the Force lightsaber as they go. For those interested in participating, visit www.starwars.com/courseoftheforce. The registration fee is $150 and includes a customized Hasbro lightsaber and an exclusive Course of the Force swag bag. Per the organizers, runners are encouraged to “be creative and wear their best Star Wars gear.”

Book Review: ‘Frozen Solid’ by James M. Tabor

Frozen Solid Book Review

Imagine you are trapped in the most unforgiving conditions and place in the world: the South Pole. And it’s about to get worse because “winter-over” is coming. In winter-over, no one can arrive or leave – if you don’t fly out in four days, you will be stuck there for eight months. Why? Because temperatures average 100 degrees below zero. Now imagine you are surrounded by temperature – and isolation-induced crazy people, including a murderer…

It is into this harshest of all environments that Hallie Leland, a microbiologist for the Center for Disease Control, is sent to complete the research started by another scientist, Emily Durant. Hallie’s specialty is studying organisms that live in extreme environments. Upon her arrival, Hallie is given Emily’s former room and is told Emily committed suicide. In the room, she finds clues to her predecessor’s mysterious death and soon learns Emily’s death was not caused by her own hands.

Hallie also learns that terrible living conditions bring out the worst in her fellow inhabitants, not just physically but mentally. They suffer from terrible coughs, illnesses, mental anguish, paranoia, and out-and-out hostility. And did I mention there is no contact with the outside world? Apparently, the station’s satellite communications system is not working – no emails or phone calls to the outside world will go through, and none are received.

The polar research station is home to a microorganism known as Vishnu, whose chemical powers have the potential to cure global warming. It is Hallie’s mission to extract this microorganism from deep below the ice and study the sample. This organism could very well end the world’s dependence on fossil fuels. But someone wants to stop her – unknown to Hallie, there is an international conspiracy working against her, and she is in great danger.

The suspense never ends in Frozen Solid, as Hallie races in a battle against time, unknown enemies, an extremely brutal environment, and a murderer. Frozen Solid is well written, and when Hallie has to save two of her colleagues after they fall through the ice, you are right there with her. Freezing and holding your breath, but with her. This happens a lot in this book. You will feel Hallie’s anxiety, fear, and the bitter cold and darkness of the South Pole.

You might need a dictionary for some medical and scientific jargon, but you won’t need any help imagining the cold and terror of Hallie, a brave and determined heroine.

Frozen Solid was written by James M Tabor and was released on March 26, 2013.

The Wachowskis Create ‘Sense8’ Sci-Fi Series for Netflix

Netflix

The sibling filmmaking team of Andy and Lana Wachowski (The Matrix films, Cloud Atlas) along with J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5, Thor) are teaming up on Sense8, a new science fiction series coming to the ever-expanding Netflix lineup. Season one of the 10 episode thriller will be debuting in 2014, marking the Wachowskis first television venture.

Announcing the project, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos stated, “Andy and Lana Wachowski and Joe Straczynski are among the most imaginative writers and gifted visual storytellers of our time. Their incredible creations are favorites of Netflix members globally and we can’t wait to bring Sense8 to life.”

“We’re excited to work with Netflix and Georgeville Television on this project, and we’ve wanted to work with Joe Straczynski for years, chiefly due to the fact his name is harder to pronounce than ours, but also because we share a love of genre and all things nerdy,” said Andy and Lana Wachowski. “Several years ago, we had a late night conversation about the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us, and out of that paradox Sense8 was born.”

“We are proud to be working with Netflix on this new series,” said Straczynski. “Lana, Andy, and I are fans of each other’s creations, and have been looking for something to do together for nearly a decade.”

Georgeville Television is producing Sense8 which is described as “a gripping global tale of minds linked and souls hunted.” the series also has Marc Rosen, Leon Clarance and Deepak Nayar on board as executive producers.

In addition to Sense8, the Wachowskis are busy working on the feature film Jupiter Ascending starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis. the cast of the Warner Bros production also includes Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth, Tuppence Middleton, Doona Bae, James D’Arcy, and Tim Pigott-Smith. Jupiter Ascending opens in theaters in February 2015.
