‘Simone Biles Rising’ Docuseries Releases a Teaser Trailer and Clip

It’s only fitting that EGOT winner Viola Davis reads Dr. Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise” over clips of Simone Biles in the teaser trailer for Netflix’s Simone Biles Rising. The inspirational poem holds a special place in the seven-time Olympic medalist’s heart. Biles even sports an “And Still I Rise” tattoo which she talks about in a new clip from the docuseries (embedded below).

The first two episodes of the documentary series premiere on July 17, 2024. The final two episodes will air this fall.

“Simone Biles has unfinished business. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she was one of the biggest stories leading into the Games. But in sport, as in life, competitions do not always go as planned. And for Simone, the world had a front row seat as her private struggle with mental health exploded on the international stage – forcing her to withdraw from the competition,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “Since then, Simone has put in the hard work: facing the difficult traumas of her past, learning to manage her mental health, embracing her journey, and in the process, rebuilding her gymnastics from the ground up. Her courage to soar knows no bounds as this summer she plans to return to the Olympic stage once again to do what she’s always done – be the best Simone that she can be. Because through it all, Simone still rises.”

Katie Walsh directs and Gotham Chopra, Ameeth Sankaran, Giselle Parets, Janey Miller, JT Taylor, and Yiannis Exarchos serve as executive producers. The four-part documentary series is produced by Religion of Sports in association with the Olympic Channel.

Investigation Discovery wants more of the true-crime series Lost Women and Feds. ID confirmed both series from Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer, her Orit Entertainment production company, and October Films will return for second seasons.

Octavia Spencer executive produces both docuseries and narrates Lost Women.

Season one of Lost Women, Lost Women of Highway 20, focused on missing and murdered women along a stretch of Oregon’s US Highway 20. Season two will revolve around the murders of two Indigenous women, Veronica Abouchuk and Kathleen Jo Henry.

Feds dives into high-profile and unusual cases as recalled by FBI agents and victims.

“Our ongoing partnership with ID and October Films is a collective commitment to shining a spotlight on important true crime stories. A new season of Feds will continue to bring unparalleled access to the FBI and our next installment of Lost Women will feature an unfolding new case digging into an ongoing crisis facing Indigenous victims, whose cases many times go not only unsolved – but uninvestigated,’ stated Spencer.

Lost Women and Feds are executive produced by Spencer, Brian Clisham and Stephanie Kluft of Orit Entertainment, and Matt Robins of October Films. Momentum Content’s Christina Douglas also serves as an executive producer on Lost Women.

ID offered this description of Lost Women season two:

“The next installment in the Lost Women franchise will continue to focus on cases that provoke important conversations around society’s treatment of women. Offering an immersive and unsettling look into the murders of Veronica Abouchuk and Kathleen Jo Henry, two Indigenous women who were killed in 2018 and 2019, the new season of Lost Women will chronicle the tumultuous events leading up to the arrest of Brian Steven Smith.

On February 22, 2024, Smith was convicted on two counts of first-degree murder. The three-part docuseries will unravel the suspenseful journey that led to his conviction and the courage of some unlikely heroes who helped piece together the case and offered a glimmer of hope in a landscape marked with injustice.”

Chimp Crazy Synopsis, Courtesy of HBO:

Former nurse-turned-exotic animal broker Tonia Haddix, who refers to herself as the “Dolly Parton of chimps,” spends her days caring for animals in captivity. However, her limitless love for one chimpanzee in particular spins into a wild cat-and-mouse game with authorities and an animal rights group. Through Tonia’s and other “chimp mom” experiences, Chimp Crazy reveals the singular bonds that form between owners and their highly intelligent great ape pets. The series exposes the risks humans take when they try to raise these animals as members of their family, as well as the risks to the welfare of the animals themselves.

At turns hilarious and tragic, while unfolding with the pace and suspense of a thriller, Chimp Crazy explores the captivating, often unfathomable, and secretive world of raising chimpanzees and also examines the colorful and complicated cast of characters that inhabit it. Tonia cares for seven captive chimps bred as talent for commercials, photo shoots, and movies. She has a special affection for Tonka, a 32-year-old retired Hollywood chimp – who she claims to love more than her own children.

Events take an unexpected turn when Tonka goes missing and Tonia is faced with a lawsuit brought by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). She responds by placing Tonka and herself at the epicenter of a years-long saga involving her family, authorities, an undercover clown, and actor Alan Cumming, who starred alongside Tonka in the 1997 film Buddy.

Episode Descriptions:

Episode One: “Monkey Love”
Debut date: SUNDAY, AUGUST 18 (10:00 p.m-11:00 p.m. ET/PT)
Former nurse-turned-exotic animal broker Tonia Haddix fights to retain custody of her “kids” — seven chimpanzees at the Missouri Primate Foundation (MPF). Other chimp moms are introduced, including one who raised a baby chimpanzee alongside her own infant daughter.

Episode Two: “Gone Ape”
Debut date: SUNDAY, AUGUST 25 (10:00 p.m-11:00 p.m. ET/PT)
PETA launches an investigation after a former Hollywood chimp named Tonka goes missing. It’s a high-stakes legal battle, particularly in light of a brutal attack that happened years earlier when another chimp nearly killed a Connecticut woman.

Episode Three: “Head Shot”
Debut date: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 1 (10:00 p.m-11:00 p.m. ET/PT)
Actor Alan Cumming, who also has a special relationship with Tonka, adds $10,000 to a reward for Tonka’s whereabouts, and the film crew faces an ethical dilemma as parallels are drawn to a previous PETA case that took a dangerous turn in Oregon.

Episode Four: “Fantasy Island”
Debut date: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 (10:00 p.m-11:00 p.m. ET/PT)
Tonka’s fate becomes clearer while Tonia struggles to let go and dreams of one day opening her own island sanctuary where she can live among chimpanzees.

‘A Different Man’ Trailer: Sebastian Stan Takes a Transformative Journey

Sebastian Stan (Pam & Tommy) stars as a man with a facial deformity who undergoes surgery in A24’s A Different Man. The trailer shows the before and after, and what happens when he meets the man who’s playing him in a theatre production.

Adam Pearson, an actor with neurofibromatosis, also stars along with Renate Reinsve.

“Aspiring actor Edward undergoes a radical medical procedure to drastically transform his appearance,” reads A24’s synopsis. “But his new dream face quickly turns into a nightmare, as he becomes obsessed with reclaiming what was lost.”

During a Q&A following a screening at Sundance, Sebastian Stan recalled his experience walking the streets in New York in prothetics. “I interacted with people and it was really interesting,” said Stan, as reported by Variety. “It was sort of scary to see how limited the interaction is between two extremes: don’t address it or overcompensation. The only people that were the most honest were kids. I had this interaction with a little girl, and her mom is trying to do the right thing, but in doing the right thing, she actually was preventing the girl from simply having an experience. She was brave and courageous, and that’s kids, right? They just want to know — they don’t have judgment. It was a learning lesson for me.”

The dark comedy was written and directed by Aaron Schimberg (Chained for Life). A24 has set a September 20, 2024 theatrical release.

‘The Deliverance’ Trailer: Andra Day Battles a Demon

Netflix dropped a creepy first trailer for The Deliverance, inspired by the Gary, Indiana “Demon House” case. The trailer shows a family being terrorized shortly after moving into a new home.

The horror thriller reunites Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels with Oscar-winner Mo’Nique and Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. Mo’Nique won the 2009 Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in Daniels’ Precious. Ellis-Taylor earned a Best Actress nomination for her starring role in Daniels’ The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

The cast also includes eight-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close, Anthony B. Jenkins, Miss Lawrence, Demi Singleton, Tasha Smith, Omar Epps, and Caleb McLaughlin.

“Ebony Jackson, a struggling single mother fighting her personal demons, moves her family into a new home for a fresh start,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “But when strange occurrences inside the home raise the suspicions of Child Protective Services and threaten to tear the family apart, Ebony soon finds herself locked in a battle for her life and the souls of her children.”

“It’s a thriller, it’s horror, but it’s also a family drama. It’s genre-bending,” said Day in an interview with People. “It’s also a movie about faith, which is really important to me too.”

Daniels directed from a screenplay by David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum. Tucker Tooley, Pamela Oas Williams, Jackson Nguyen, Todd Crites, and Daniels served as producers. Executive producers include Jackie Shenoo, Hilary Shor, Greg Renker, and Gregoire Gensollen.

The Deliverance will open in limited release on August 16, 2024 followed by a streaming premiere on August 30th.

The real “Demon House” story involved a mother and three children who rented a Gary, Indiana house and almost immediately began experiencing paranormal activity. Not even exorcisms authorized by the Catholic Church helped rid the home of whatever was affecting the family. Ultimately, Ghost Adventures‘ Zak Bagans purchased the house and had it demolished.

In the new season of Evil, Kristen, David and Ben continue to assess cases that involve wayward technology, possessed pigs, demonic oppression and infestation, a dance muse conjured by alleged witches and an evil relic. Throughout, Leland attempts to lure Kristen into raising a baby antichrist who was conceived with her ovum. David is recruited by the Vatican’s secret service to “remote view” a paranormal ability to see the unseen in order to detect evil. Ben is hit by an ion beam, causing him to see visions of a taunting jinn until he discovers an unusual solution to banish it.

Finally, all three realize they only have a few weeks left to assess cases because the parish has decided to disband the team due to a lack of funds. This culminates in one last confrontation with Leland and the 60 families that make up Evil in the modern world.
