The Sopranos’ Michael Imperioli Narrates ‘American Godfathers: The Five Families’

The Sopranos star Michael Imperioli revisits the mob world with The History Channel’s American Godfathers: The Five Families. Imperioli serves as narrator and executive producer on the six-hour documentary series premiering on Sunday, August 11, 2024 at 8pm ET/PT.

Part two airs on August 12th, followed by part three on August 13th. The docuseries is based on Selwyn Raab’s Five Families: The Rise, Decline and Resurgence of America’s Most Powerful Mafia Empires, published in 2005.

American Godfathers: The Five Families traces the extensive history of the Mafia beginning with its early ties to Sicily. In 1931, Charles ‘Lucky’ Luciano, a Sicilian-born gangster, created The Commission which acted as the governing body for the American Mafia and appointed the original ‘New York Five’ – the Bonanno, Gagliano, Luciano, Mangano, and Profaci families,” reads History’s synopsis. “They lived by an honor code or set of rules; the most important was omertá meaning ‘silence.’ For a generation, omertá, the key to the Mafia’s success, kept the families safe from law enforcement and public view as they made millions through wartime, depression, and changes in legislation to seamlessly move from one racket to the next.

Over time, the uniquely American values of greed and celebrity, coupled with the relentless pursuit by federal law enforcement, proved too great a match. From the heyday of Lucky Luciano, the 1963 Valachi hearings and the brutal and public slayings of Albert Anastasia, Joey ‘Crazy Joe’ Gallo, Paul Castellano, and Carmine Galante, to name a few, to the media storm that ensued when Joseph ‘Big Joey’ Massino flipped on his own family in 2005, the history and subsequent breakdown of the code coupled with the ever-changing violent power struggles within each of the five families is vividly chronicled throughout each two-hour episode. Through investigative archival images, footage, audio recordings, and recreation as well as new, candid on-camera interviews with authors including Raab himself, historians, experts, law enforcement, witnesses, and former mafia affiliates, viewers will get an inside look at the inner workings of the most powerful criminal organization of the twentieth century.”

The three-part documentary series is produced by Propagate and the Barnicle Brothers. Executive producers include Propagate’s Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens, and Chelsea Friedland, and Barnicle Brothers’ Nick Barnicle and Colin Barnicle. The History Channel’s Mary E. Donahue and Zachary Behr also executive produce.

Faye Dunaway Documentary

HBO released this lengthy synopsis of the first-ever Faye Dunaway documentary:

“Academy Award-winning actress and multi-decade movie star Faye Dunaway recounts the triumphs and challenges of her illustrious career with frank candor in Faye, the first feature documentary about the Hollywood legend.Through honest reflection, complemented by insight from colleagues and friends, Dunaway contextualizes her life and filmography, laying bare her struggles with mental health while confronting the double standards she was subjected to as a woman in Hollywood.

Growing up as Dorothy Faye Dunaway, the army child of a father who struggled with alcoholism and raised predominantly by her single mother, Dunaway escaped into the world of acting, finding mentors in director Elia Kazan and playwright William Alfred, whose play Hogan’s Goat helped launch her career in 1965. In Faye, the three-time Academy Award-nominated actor – she would win for 1976’s Network – explores the personal trajectory of her life in concert with her storied career.

Many of her film roles seem to reflect aspects of Faye’s own personality and the social climate in which they were made, including Bonnie and Clyde, Chinatown, and Network, a film which drew criticism, but also praise, for Dunaway’s portrayal of a headstrong, unsympathetic television producer – criticisms that were also leveled at Dunaway for her reputation as a ‘difficult’ artist to work with. Speaking candidly about her struggles with alcoholism and bipolar disorder, her love affairs, and the joys of motherhood, Dunaway also reflects on her role in Mommie Dearest, the infamous 1981 movie that was a popular success but threatened to destroy her career.

With her on-screen elegance and sense of fashion, she became a style icon and continues to inspire and influence fashion trends today. Fiercely independent and determined to develop her own professional opportunities into the 1990s and 2000s, but at times thwarted by her own reputation and demons, Faye serves as a reminder of Dunaway’s singular ability to inspire generations of filmmakers and actors with her enduring screen charisma and film oeuvre.”

André Holland (Moonlight) and Rosario Dawson (Ahsoka) have joined Netflix’s Terminator Zero‘s voice cast along with Sonoya Mizuno (House of the Dragon) and Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale). The newcomers join Timothy Olyphant who was previously announced to star as the voice of Terminator in the anime series.

Terminator Zero is the first animated entry in the popular Terminator franchise. The eight-episode first season will feature new characters, with Ghost in the Shell’s Production IG handling the animation.

“I asked my long-time friend and colleague Mamoru Oshii what he thought about the idea of turning Terminator into an animated series. His response was ‘Ishikawa, are you out of your mind?’ At that instant, I was confident we should get on board. As huge fans, our team at Production I.G is putting their heart and souls into creating this series. We hope fans will enjoy it!” said Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, President and CEO of Production I.G., when the series was greenlit back in February 2021.

Netflix is targeting an August 29, 2024 release date. August 29th is known as Judgement Day to Terminator fans, marking the date that Skynet became self-aware.

“2022: A future war has raged for decades between the few human survivors and an endless army of machines. 1997: The AI known as Skynet gained self-awareness and began its war against humanity,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “Caught between the future and this past is a soldier sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who works to launch a new AI system designed to compete with Skynet’s impending attack on humanity. As Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by an unrelenting assassin from the future which forever alters the fate of his three children.”

Netflix released the following descriptions of the characters the just-announced cast will be voicing:

• Rosario Dawson as Kokoro – An advanced AI and Japan’s answer to Skynet, if brought online, Kokoro will be endowed with the same power as Skynet. Kokoro must calculate for itself: is humanity the plague Skynet believes? Or are human beings worth saving?
• André Holland as Malcolm Lee – A genius computer programmer and father of three, Malcolm Lee is haunted by prophetic nightmares of an apocalyptic future. He’s spent the last decade creating a secret artificial intelligence that he believes will be humanity’s last hope.
• Sonoya Mizuno as Eiko – Coming from a post-Judgement Day 2022, Eiko is a resistance fighter sent back in time to stop Malcolm from launching Kokoro.
• Ann Dowd as The Prophet – In the future, the Prophet is the philosophical guide for the human resistance, a light shepherding survivors in the darkness of the unknown future ahead.

Mattson Tomlin created the series and serves as an executive producer along with Skydance.

Coming off the massive hit Baby Reindeer, Richard Gadd is following up with Lions (working title) for HBO and BBC. Gadd created Lions and will write and executive produce, with Alexandra Brodski (Somewhere Boy) and Eshref Reybrouck (Cheyenne & Lola) directing.

HBO and BBC offered this description of Gadd’s next series: “When Niall’s estranged ‘brother’ Ruben shows up at his wedding, it leads to an explosion of violence that catapults us back through their lives. Spanning almost forty years from the 1980s to the present day, this ambitious series will cover the highs and lows of the brothers’ relationship, from them meeting as teenagers to their falling out as adults – with all the good, bad, terrible, funny, angry, and challenging moments along the way. It will capture the wild energy of a changing city – a changing world, even – and try to get to the bottom of the difficult question… What does it mean to be a man?”

“Ordering a HBO boxset of The Sopranos, The Wire, or Oz and watching it from start to finish were some of the happiest moments of my childhood. Since then, it has always been a dream of mine to work with HBO and be part of their iconic roster of shows,” said Richard Gadd. “I am so grateful to Francesca Orsi, Kara Buckley, and Clint LaVigne for taking this chance on the show and on Ruben and Niall too who – despite growing up in a dead-end Scottish town – would be absolutely pinching themselves at this! I cannot wait to get started.”

Additional executive producers include Tally Garner and Morven Reid from Mam Tor Productions, BBC’s Gaynor Holmes, and Gavin Smith for BBC Scotland.

“We are tremendously excited to partner with the BBC and Richard Gadd, whose remarkable talent continues to make waves across the globe,” stated Kara Buckley, Senior Vice President HBO Drama Programming. “With this new, gripping and evocative series, we are proud to welcome Richard to the HBO family.”

The six-episode season is produced by Wendy Griffin (Limbo).

Peacock’s adding a new twist to reality competition programming with The Hungry Games: Alaska’s Big Bear Challenge.
