Magnet will show off the final cut at the Toronto International Film Festival and is aiming for an early 2013 theatrical release date.
“We are longtime fans of the great Don Coscarelli, and fell in love with this film when it debuted at Sundance,” said Magnolia/Magnet President Eamonn Bowles. “It’s a real head trip—imaginative, wildly funny, and incredibly demented, with all the makings of an underground classic that fans will come back to again and again.”
Coscarelli adds, “It is my great pleasure to be allied with the finest and most entrepreneurial independent film distributor in the terrific team at Magnolia Pictures. They share my passion for the story of Dave and John…Obviously the ‘Soy Sauce’ that kicks the plot into gear has had the same addictive effect on them as it did me. Watch out!”
The Plot:
Paul Giamatti plays Arnie, a shadowy figure investigating a street drug known as Soy Sauce. Promising an out-of-body experience with each hit, Soy Sauce causes users to drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead is John and Dave (Mayes and Williamson), a pair of college dropouts who can barely hold down jobs. Can these two stop the oncoming horror in time to save humanity? No. No, they can’t.

Magical Mystery Tour Coming on DVD and Blu-Ray
Written and directed by The Beatles and released in 1967, Magical Mystery Tour was the third film from the group and the one that never had a US broadcast. Only 53 minutes long, Magical Mystery Tour is a “dreamlike story of a coach day trip to the seaside” created when the group gathered their friends and cast onto a bus and headed out of London.
“Paul said, ‘Look, I’ve got this idea,’ and we said ‘Great!’ and all he had was this circle and a little dot on the top – that’s where we started,” explained Ringo. “It wasn’t the kind of thing where you could say, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, what you are about to see is the product of our imaginations and believe me, at this point they are quite vivid’,” said Paul.
The resulting film used a loose narrative created by six songs – “Magical Mystery Tour,” “The Fool On The Hill,” “I Am The Walrus,” “Flying,” “Blue Jay Way,” and “Your Mother Should Know” – to tell a story.
Now fully restored, Magical Mystery Tour is coming to DVD and Blu-ray with a remixed soundtrack in October following a very limited theatrical release on September 27th. The DVD and Blu-ray packages will include unseen footage, new interviews, and an audio commentary by Paul. A deluxe edition will include a 60 page book and a reproduction of the mono double 7″ vinyl EP with the six songs from the film.
Magical Mystery Tour Special Features:
Director’s Commentary – by Paul McCartney
“The Making of Magical Mystery Tour” [19:05]
– Features interviews with Paul and Ringo, along with other cast members and crew. Includes unseen footage.
“Ringo the Actor” [2:30]
– Ringo Starr reflecting on his role in the film.
“Meet the Supporting Cast” [11:27]
– A feature on the background and careers of Nat Jackley, Jessie Robins, Ivor Cutler, The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, Victor Spinetti, George Claydon, and Derek Royle.
“Your Mother Should Know” [2:35]
“Blue Jay Way” [3:53]
“The Fool On The Hill” [3:05]
– Three new edits of these performances, all featuring footage not seen in the original film.
“Hello Goodbye,” as featured on “Top of the Pops” – 1967 [3:24]
– The Beatles allowed the BBC to film them in the edit suite where they were working on Magical Mystery Tour. This was then turned into a promo by the BBC, who shot their own additional footage. It was then broadcast on “Top of the Pops” to mark the “Hello Goodbye” single going to No. 1 in December 1967.
“Nat’s Dream” [2:50]
– A scene directed by John featuring Nat Jackley and not included in the original film.
Ivor Cutler – “I’m Going In A Field” [2:35]
– Ivor performs “I’m Going In A Field,” in a field. This scene was not included in the original film.
Traffic – “Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush” [1:53]
– The filming of Traffic acting out their 1967 hit single “Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush” was commissioned by The Beatles for possible inclusion in Magical Mystery Tour, but was not included in the final edit.

ABC Moves Up Jimmy Kimmel Live
ABC’s switching up their late night lineup, moving Jimmy Kimmel Live up to the 11:35pm timeslot in order to capitalize “on ratings momentum, advertising demand and increased revenue potential for entertainment programming.” The move will take place on January 8, 2013 and will place Jimmy Kimmel in direct competition with The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Show with David Letterman.
Nightline will be moving to the 12:35am spot and will expand to primetime on Friday nights at 9pm (beginning March 1st).
Announcing the changes, Anne Sweeney, co-chair, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney/ABC Television Group, stated: “Given the passionate fan base Jimmy Kimmel Live has built over the past decade and the show’s ratings and creative momentum this season, the time is right to make this move. There is the potential for far greater upside over the long term with this shift, given increased advertiser demand for competitive entertainment programming in the time slot.”
Sweeney added, “This shift also allows us to bookend our programming day with compelling news content. And the addition of a new primetime hour of Nightline on Friday nights will ensure that the program has even more opportunities to continue its incredible, award-winning reporting.”

Movie Review: ‘Hit and Run’

Many of the younger movie-going set may not remember Burt Reynolds was box office king from 1978 to 1982. How in the hell does that relate to a movie review for Hit & Run? It’s almost a matter of cinematic DNA really, as the essence of the film is like a throwback to the Smokey and the Bandit franchise. That same sense of fun, comedy, and ability to develop extremely likable characters shines through the screenplay written by Dax Shepard, who also stars in the movie and worked behind the scenes as co-director and co-editor.
The plot is simple enough: Shepard plays a former getaway driver now in witness protection who’s trying to balance the task of getting his girlfriend (Kristen Bell) to a job interview while also evading previous criminal cohorts out for revenge from the job that landed him in the not so safe care of a US Marshal (Tom Arnold). What makes the whole experience so enjoyable is the cast.
From the excellent chemistry of Shepard and Bell (showing real-life relationships can translate on-screen) to the hilarious efforts of Arnold, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rosenbaum, Jess Rowland, Beau Bridges, and a few uncredited folks, I don’t want to spoil the surprise for, the movie oscillates fluidly between laugh out loud jokes to heartfelt and endearing moments. There’s not one weak link in the chain, and all that was missing was a gag reel to play at the end of the credits (though stick around as they begin to roll for a bonus scene).
The car chases are handled nicely, and although the movie comes a bit out of nowhere, with very little in the way of marketing to ensure it delivers a super strong opening weekend, Hit & Run is one of the most fun movies of 2012. Audiences who can buy themselves tickets for R-rated movies (and remember to leave their kids at home with a babysitter because that’s the responsible thing to do) will be delighted to enjoy a movie that doesn’t try to be more than it is and understands the very definition of the word ‘entertainment.’
Trying to go on and on about it would only end up spoiling a joke or sounding like more plot synopsis regurgitation. All you need to know is that it’s a good time and one of the few films going worth the price of admission.
GRADE: B+
Hit and Run hits theaters on August 22, 2012 and is rated R for pervasive language including sexual references, graphic nudity, some violence and drug content.

New Artist Spotlight: Dustin Lynch

Lots of young artists come to Nashville to seek their musical fortunes. Dustin Lynch’s plans were more focused. He wanted to come to a specific part of Nashville — specifically, as close as he could get to the Bluebird Café so that he could hear and learn from the best songwriters in town as often as possible.
One day after his arrival, Lynch auditioned to play the Bluebird’s open-mic night the following evening. His performance so impressed host Barbara Cloyd that she offered to introduce him around the community. Not long after that, Peter Hartung, head of L3Entertainment and manager to Justin Moore, engineered a publishing deal for him. Word spread quickly of Lynch’s talent; in less than two years, he finished more than 200 songs.
With his self-titled debut album on Broken Bow Records, another side of his talent emerges. Lynch’s vocals enhance his fine-tuned writing on 10 of these tracks — and the craftsmanship of those who penned the remaining three. The first single, “Cowboys and Angels” (Lynch, Josh Leo and Tim Nichols), is built on an image-rich lyric, which flows out conversationally through verses a relaxed 7/8 and then opens wide over a spacious backbeat on the choruses.
The rest of Dustin Lynch conveys this same combination of understated but expressive singing, strong composition and lyrics with an unusual, dreamy depth. Even his upbeat study in down-home double entendre, “She Cranks My Tractor” (Lynch, Brett Beavers and Nichols), conjures vivid visuals, both pristine and suggestive. But the last track, “Your Plan,” written by Lynch alone, confirms that he also possesses the courage to write honestly and the insight to find inspiration within.
