‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ Movie Review

Judi Dench, Bill Nighy and Tom Wilkinson in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Judi Dench, Bill Nighy and Tom Wilkinson in 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' - © Fox Searchlight

Based on a novel with an even longer title, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel comes from director John Madden. No, not the football analyst (Yes, I’ll make this joke every time). This is the John Madden who made last year’s The Debt but is probably best known for Shakespeare in Love.

As with either of those movies, he’s again working with top-tier British talent (being English himself probably makes it a smaller coincidence). Audiences will be drowning in the acting riches. The film stars Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton, Ronald Pickup, Celia Imrie, and Dev Patel. It’s the kind of cast that could make watching a table read worth the price of admission.

The story involves a collection of elderly Brits who have been adorably conned into moving to a struggling Indian hotel ran by Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel). He dreams of turning the crumbling property into the vision his father had of the place and attempts to make it come true almost solely on nerve and optimism. Each of the new tenants comes to India with different goals, expectations, and baggage. As they handle those elements for themselves, Sonny is juggling not only the rigors of trying to make the hotel turn a profit but also must figure out a way to get his mother to accept his girlfriend and stop trying to run his life.

It’s plain to see that there are character details and subplots that are likely developed and explored much more in the book. That’s the nature of any literary translation. However, screenwriter Ol Parker manages to balance things effectively, and the end result is a successive ensemble effort beautifully delivered by the actors.

Of course, in doing so, audiences looking for a quick and cute diversion may find things moving a bit slower than they want. Considering the number of characters, I felt the pacing was about right, and it’s hard to see how it could have been trimmed without sacrificing more than would be gained. There is a nice mix of comedy with the drama, and although the demographic is likely to skew slightly older, anyone who enjoys fine acting will do just fine.

The vibrancy of India comes through The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and boosts the already engaging effort by the actors. This is one of those movies that is saccharine enough to temper my overall esteem but makes it one of the easiest films to recommend to nearly anyone looking for nothing more than a good, solid movie. Just be forewarned that watching Dev Patel again try to woo a remarkably beautiful Indian girl may make you long to watch Slumdog Millionaire again so make sure your DVD is handy for a possible double feature (decide for yourself if you want the heavier film first or second).

GRADE: B+

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel opens on May 11, 2012 and is PG-13 for sexual content and language.

First Look: The Campaign Trailer

I saw this trailer at the 2012 CinemaCon and it got some of the biggest laughs of any trailer screened at the event. A timely comedy all about politics and campaigning, The Campaign release stars Zach Galifianakis and Will Ferrell. Warner Bros has set an August 10, 2012 release.

The Plot:

When long-term congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs plot to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: naïve Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), director of the local Tourism Center.

DreamWorks is bringing the How to Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular to North American following a successful run in Australia and New Zealand. Inspired by the characters from the animated movie, the live-action show (produced by RZO Dragon Productions) includes 24 dragons – some with 46 foot wingspans – Viking warriors, and world-class circus artists and acrobats.

Per DreamWorks Animation:

“The live production rolls fire-breathing action, epic adventure and heartfelt laughter into an original captivating story set in the mythical world of Vikings and wild dragons. Based on the book by Cressida Cowell, it centers on Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn’t fit in with his tribe’s longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers. Hiccup’s world is turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges him and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view.”

Chief Executive Officer of DreamWorks Animation Jeffrey Katzenberg discussed the live show: “In our film, audiences around the world were transported to the mythical world of Vikings and dragons… and now, we are excited to immerse them in a one-of-a-kind live event in HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON LIVE SPECTACULAR. The innovative team at Global Creatures and the creative storytellers at DreamWorks Animation have done an inspired job in every imaginable way to present this story on an unprecedented scale that will take global audiences to unforgettable new heights. We are happy to be working with Michael Cohl and his team at S2BN Entertainment to promote and take this show around the world.”

Michael Cohl, founder and chairman of S2BN Entertainment and lead producer of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, said, “HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON LIVE SPECTACULAR is the next logical step for me after Spider-Man: to be back in arenas where I’ve always been, and where the most exciting things happen. We are thrilled to be setting a new gold standard for live family entertainment while utilizing the full scope and scale of the arena floor and fly space. The show delivers cutting-edge production values which tell an incredible story and create an unforgettable and magical experience. This show will mesmerize children and parents alike.”

The Cast:

Young Hollywood actor Riley Miner, an accomplished dancer and musical theater performer, will play the lead role of Hiccup. Joining Miner to share the role of Hiccup is Rarmian Newton, who won a Helpmann Award for his performance in the Australian production of Billy Elliot The Musical (2008). American stunt performer Gemma Nguyen, a third degree Black Belt and six-time world champion in Tae Kwon Do, plays Astrid. Sharing the role of Astrid is 19-year-old Queenslander Sarah McCreanor who has starred in her own comedic productions and performed in a range of musicals and comedy shows.

Stalwart Australian actor Robert Morgan plays Stoick, Hiccup’s father and the rough and ready old-school chieftain of the brawny Viking tribe. American Will Watkins, an accomplished fencer, will star as Gobber; French Kung Fu champion and stuntman Godefroy Ryckewaert plays Snotlout and Texan hip-hop dancer and rapper Dexter Mayfield will play Fishlegs. Australian hip-hop and break-dancer Virackhaly Ngeth has been cast as Ruffnut and Sydney break-dancer Frace Luke Mercado, a founding member of SKB (Street Kulture Breakers), as Tuffnut.

More on Let It Happen:

“Let It Happen is Drew Brown (Lead Vocals), Sean Highley (Drums), Michael Vogel (Lead Guitar), and Nathan Joiner (Bass). The band hopes to bring a positive light to a generation through their music. Highley explains how ‘regardless of age, life is complicated, and our generation is coming of age in a complicated time. Our music speaks to that.’

After years of playing in various Metal and Hardcore bands around Cincinnati, these four Ohio musicians decided to drop all other projects and focus on writing and performing the type of music they were truly passionate about – pop-rock. Thus, Let It Happen was formed in the summer of 2009. The band quickly went to work writing and performing in venues around Cincinnati, gaining praise from critics and fans for their memorable melodies and unguarded lyrics.”
