Tears for Fears Co-Founder Announces ‘Mayfield’ Release

Curt Smith’s out-of-print solo album, Mayfield, will be re-released on November 15, 2011. The re-release of the 1997 album will include a new bonus track, “Trees,” featuring Janice Whaley.

“Mayfield was a band I formed after moving to New York, a couple of years into my hiatus from Tears For Fears,” Smith explained in the press release. “The premise was to not use my name (hence ‘Mayfield’: Curt-is Mayfield, get it?) and just try to rediscover the joys of music through playing live. We played at downtown New York clubs like Brownie’s, Mercury Lounge and CBGB’s. Those were a couple of the most enjoyable years I’ve spent as a musician.”

Smith’s longtime collaborator Charlton Pettus (who’s played with Smith in the Tears for Fears touring band since 2004) wrote the songs, and the tracks on Mayfield were recorded live with, according to Smith, “overdubbing and editing used sparingly.”

Mayfield was made up of Smith (bass/lead vocals), Pettus (guitar/backing vocals), Doug Petty (keyboards), Russ Irwin (keyboards/backing vocals), and Shawn Pelton (drums).

Smith says Mayfield will be “available in digital format from all major online retailers, and in physical CD format from Amazon.com and at Smith’s shows.” He also also plans a limited edition Mayfield deluxe bundle that will include exclusive collectibles, which will be available only on his website at curtsmithofficial.com.

New A Dangerous Method Poster Arrives

The latest poster is similar to the first couple of teaser posters released for A Dangerous Method, but who cares? In my book there can never be too many posters with Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortensen (and I’m sure Keira Knightley fans feel the same way).

AMC Renews The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead is performing so well in its second season that AMC’s already decided to officially renew the popular series for a third season. According to AMC, The Walking Dead has more 18-49 year old viewers than any other drama on basic cable, and the show has also become the most successful basic cable drama outside of the US. Not bad for a series about humans trying to stay alive in a world overrun with gross-looking zombies.

The Walking Dead is based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman, with Glen Mazzara serving as the showrunner. Greg Nicotero is the co-executive producer and Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert and Frank Darabont executive produce.

“Today we are pleased to announce that the ‘dead’ shall live as we proudly renew The Walking Dead for a third season on AMC and, globally, with our terrific partners at Fox International Channels,” stated Charlie Collier, AMC’s President. “We are thankful for everyone’s contribution in front of and behind the camera as we continue to make The Walking Dead a unique television experience. And, we are so proud as it continues to set viewership records around the world.”

‘Martha Marcy May Marlene’ Movie Review

Elizabeth Olsen and Sarah Paulson in Martha Marcy May Marlene

You’re a teacher and a leader. It’s just that no one has had the trust in you to say so. They don’t love you like I do.

Using words like that, am I any closer to recruiting you into my super awesome cult? No? I … understand.

Well, for Martha (Elizabeth Olsen), it’s a similar rap from Patrick (John Hawkes) that helps hook her into a makeshift family of young adults (think Charles Manson) in writer/director Sean Durkin’s Martha Marcy May Marlene. Patrick is the savior/provider of the group, and with it come the spoils – mostly in the form of laying with each of the ladies that have been assimilated into the cult. He knows all the tricks of the trade, even renaming everyone in the farmhouse/compound.

With Martha, that new moniker is Marcy May (the Marlene explanation comes much later). The film begins with her escaping from the cult and staying with her sister Lucy (Sarah Paulson) and brother-in-law, Ted (Hugh Dancy). The story flips back and forth between the present and the past in a number of very well-conceived and executed transitions that help blur the timeline. And rather than follow the traditional A-B-C story structure, we are merely given the basic structure of the cult through Martha’s eyes as she tries to bury those memories and readjust to the way society works outside of Patrick’s sphere of influence.

It’s all about the present and where Martha is at this very moment – with back-story filled in over the course of things to explain the haunted look in her eyes evident from the outset. If you’re one of those people who need a beginning, middle, and end, this is going to test you. It’s also not about getting a concrete resolution, there is ambiguity to how the story plays out, which is greatly appreciated by myself but not so much by others. Just be aware of your preferences.

However, if that isn’t a red flag, the rewards of seeing the film are great. Elizabeth Olsen delivers a tremendous performance, showcasing just about every emotion in the human repertoire. She’s fearless in her approach, baring her body and soul in order to convey the effect Patrick and his flock have had on Martha. She seems to have forgotten societal norms, having replaced them with whatever manner of action was deemed acceptable at the farmhouse. Just how far those changes have rewired her thinking is the elephant in the room.

That’s the beauty of Durkin’s film – the unpredictability. Audiences are only given bits and pieces of Martha’s life at Patrick’s farmhouse, dosed out measure by measure as the story unfolds. It’s never quite clear what the endgame will be or if the adage that ‘It’s not paranoia if they’re really out to get you’ applies in these circumstances. This kind of uncertainty takes a great deal of precision from everyone involved, from Durkin himself to editor Zachary Stuart-Pontier, to the entire production team, and to the actors.

To that end, the rest of the cast is also spot on. Paulson beautifully plays the role of big sister/de-facto mother. It’s easy to see why Martha disappeared from her life in the first place but also that the fracturing in their relationship was due to faults by both parties. Dancy delivers another surprisingly understated and yet effective turn (part of that due to my blind spot for remembering his real name until the credits rolled) as the brother-in-law trying to be supportive of his wife’s wish to take care of her family while also being wary of Martha’s bizarre behavior as an indicator of worse things to come.

And of course, in order to make the whole premise work, you need an outstanding performance from the cult leader, to which John Hawkes acquitted himself superbly. He mixes in the right balance of snake charmer, father figure, and tyrant to catch people in his web. It’s clear that Patrick has an innate sense of finding vulnerability in people and exploiting it for his own gain. This is made all the more intimidating because events like these have happened and are still happening. While not based directly on any one cult, Durkin managed to color everything with the right brush to allow audiences to watch Martha’s story unfold and, should anything be left off-screen or out of the final cut, to imagine the worst.

I haven’t been able to see Durkin’s 2010 short film, Mary Last Seen, which both helped him secure financing to make and served as a quasi-preface to, Martha Marcy May Marlene. Watching the trailer, it’s clear how it leads to where the long-form version begins, and Brady Corbet being in both helps create the literal connection. As such, it would have been nice to attach it to the theatrical release, much like the Edgerton brothers showed their short Spider before The Square (it even had a small, subtle tie into their feature); maybe it’ll be a nice extra on the DVD.

As for seeing this on the big screen, it’s not necessary, but I’m of the mind that any good film is better in a theater than at home (unless you’re a gazillionaire and have a ridiculous home theater … by the way, if that’s true, invite me over). It’s a harder sell because most audiences want to see plot progression, and might not be content with watching Martha at the beginning of her journey back to “normality.” However, for those who enjoy character studies and/or the effects and methodologies of cults, Martha Marcy May Marlene lands itself on a sadly short list of memorable films so far in 2011.

GRADE: A-

Martha May Marcy Marlene hit theaters in limited release on October 21, 2011 and is rated R for disturbing violent and sexual content, nudity and language.

Nickelodeon has greenlit the network’s first-ever original comedy for Nick at Nite, Daddy’s Home. The show will be executive-produced by Eric Bischoff, Jason Hervey, Albanese, Labyorteaux and Baio.

“Scott Baio is an actor known and beloved by today’s Nick at Nite viewers, many of whom are parents,” stated Marjorie Cohn, President, Original Programming and Development, Nickelodeon. “His new project will put a contemporary and comedic twist on parenthood that will make for a great addition to our existing slate of family programming.”

“It’s nice to be back home in an arena where I’m completely comfortable and with a show idea that I love,” added Baio.

The Plot: Daddy’s Home follows David Hobbs (Baio) an actor who, after ten years of starring as America’s favorite TV dad, becomes a stay-at-home father to honor the deal he made with his soap star wife so that she may return to the limelight.

Baio also starred in his own 1980s hit sitcom, Charles in Charge. ‘Shame’ Gets an NC-17 Rating and Trailer

Will an NC-17 rating hurt Shame‘s Oscar chances? Probably not, but it will most likely hurt its chance at performing well at the box office. Director Steve McQueen’s new film on sexual addiction just received the rating which, given the subject matter, nudity and graphic sex, was expected by the director.

The Plot:

“Brandon (Michael Fassbender) is a 30-something man living in New York who is unable to manage his sex life. After his wayward younger sister (Carey Mulligan) moves into his apartment, Brandon’s world spirals out of control. From BAFTA award winning director Steve McQueen (Hunger), Shame is a compelling and timely examination of the nature of need, how we live our lives and the experiences that shape us.”

The film will open in limited release on December 2, 2011.

‘Shameless’ Season 2 Trailer

Shameless PosterOne of the most interesting—and R-rated—dysfunctional families on cable returns on January 8, 2012 with the second season of Showtime’s Shameless. This latest trailer shows the Gallaghers haven’t cleaned up their act since we left them at the end of season one, with kegs, empty beer bottles in a baby crib, a taser, pole dancing, and a random chicken showing up in the new teaser trailer for the upcoming season.

About the Show [Courtesy of Showtime]:
Meet Frank Gallagher (William H. Macy). Proud, working-class patriarch to a motley brood of six smart, spirited and independent kids who, without him, would be…better off. In Frank’s booze-addled view, parenting just eats into his hard-earned bar crawling and carousing time around Chicago, so it’s better left to eldest daughter Fiona (Emmy Rossum) to hold down the fort.

Bearing the de facto parent badge/burden, she’s donned the proverbial apron and makes sure her younger siblings do their chores, keep a clean(ish) home and feed the kitty — the Gallagher family fund jar — because the gas bill is due and everyone (no matter how small) works to keep the lights on and food on the table. Brothers Lip (Jeremy Allen White), Ian (Cameron Monaghan) and Carl (Ethan Cutkosky) use their intellect to break every rule in the book to survive and make the bank, while younger sister Debbie (Emma Kenney) would sooner steal her share.

Toddler Liam the youngest is just happy to be along for the ride. The Gallaghers are irreverent, endearing, resilient and they’re absolutely, wildly and unapologetically Shameless.

Bye bye Harry, Hermione, and Ron. Warner Bros will be pulling all of the DVDs for the eight Harry Potter films from stores on December 29, 2011. This removal of all Harry Potter videos will come just seven weeks or so after the release of the final Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, on DVD on November 11th. So if you want to own any of the Harry Potter movies, you better put in your order/visit a store before the end of December.

The studio hasn’t announced when they will make the DVDs available again, but it’s likely they will be back in special editions/more expensive versions sometime in the near future. Per the official press release:

Harry Potter, the #1 motion picture franchise of all time, will soon disappear from shelves, as Warner Bros. stops shipping all Harry Potter theatrical film titles (including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows™ – Part 2, and Harry Potter: The Complete 8-Film Collection) as of December 29, 2011 (moratorium does not include digital – Electronic Sell-Through & VOD – or games). The Harry Potter franchise has grossed more than $12.1 billion for Warner Bros. Entertainment – with $7 billion at the worldwide box office for Warner Bros. Pictures and $5.1 billion for Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.”
