‘War Horse’ Movie Trailer Debuts

DreamWorks Pictures has just released the first trailer for Steven Spielberg’s War Horse which is set for a theatrical release this December. Based on a bestselling book, the story follows one horse’s journey through World War I and his lasting relationship with the boy who tamed and trained him.

The cast is led by Jeremy Irvine and includes Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Peter Mullan,
Tom Hiddleston, and Niels Arestrup. Celine Buckens, Benedict Cumberbatch, Patrick Kennedy, and Toby Kebbell also star.

The Plot: DreamWorks Pictures’ War Horse, director Steven Spielberg’s epic adventure, is a tale of loyalty, hope, and tenacity set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War. War Horse begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him.

When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets — British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter—before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land.

The First World War is experienced through the journey of this horse — an odyssey of joy and sorrow, passionate friendship, and high adventure. War Horse is one of the great stories of friendship and war — a successful book, it was turned into a hugely successful international theatrical hit that is arriving on Broadway next year. It now comes to the screen in an epic adaptation by one of the great directors in film history.

‘The Voice’ Contestants Go On Tour

The Voice 2011 Top 8

The Top 8 finalists of NBC’s super successful rookie season of The Voice will be taking part in a tour set to kick off on July 27, 2011. The Live Nation tour will consist of six shows including stops in New York and Boston.

The contestants taking part in the tour are Beverly McClellan and runner-up Frenchie Davis from Team Christina, Team Blake’s finalist Dia Frampton and runner up Xenia, Team Cee Lo’s runner up Nakia and finalist Vicci Martinez, and Team Adam’s runner up Casey Weston and The Voice winner Javier Colon.

A little background on The Voice singers:

Beverly McClellan – A member of Christina’s team, Beverly is a soulful rock singer with honest lyrics and a raw sound. Beverly plays over 10 instruments and has already released five independent albums. Originally from Virginia, she’s worked the clubs and bars around Fort Lauderdale, Florida for nearly 20 years, always looking for that big break.

Vicci Martinez – A member of Cee Lo’s team and only 26 years of age, this bluesy soul singer from Tacoma, Washington has already opened for or shared the stage with notables such as Sting, Annie Lennox, B.B. King, the Doobie Brothers, Etta James, and Jonny Lang. She draws strong support from her family – and the memory of her late father.

Javier Colon – A member of Adam’s team, this soulful pop singer’s father worked at a radio station, immersing his son in music from an early age; by 13, Javier was writing his own songs. His young talent led to touring gigs and even a contract with Capitol Records, but his career never really took off. Now, the devoted husband and father of two is taking a final shot at pursuing his musical dreams before leaving music behind to support his family.

Dia Frampton – A member of Blake’s team, this 23-year-old singer-songwriter hails from St. George, Utah. Her career aspiration has been to be a voice-over actress, but her considerable singing talents may just steer her elsewhere. A lifelong bookworm, Dia also writes novels and children’s books.

Frenchie Davis – A member of Christina’s team, this Washington D.C. native found success on Broadway, where she starred in Rent for four years. She also had headlining roles in the touring shows of DreamGirls and Ain’t Misbehavin, for which she received a Grammy nomination for the cast recording. Frenchie hopes to record an album of dance, classics, broadway, and a few new original songs.

Nakia – A member of Cee Lo’s team and based in Austin, Texas, 36-year-old Nakia draws strength from his extended family and inspiration from the memory of his father. Until he passed away in 2009, Nakia’s dad encouraged him to follow his dreams. The bluesy singer knows he doesn’t look like a typical pop performer, but that doesn’t discourage him at all. He realizes that on The Voice, all that matters is how he sings.

Casey Weston – A member of Adam’s team, this recent high school graduate from Naples, Florida is passionate about two things: music and animals. The child of two professional volleyball players, Casey was being groomed for a career as an athlete. But at age 13, the urge to perform took over, and Casey’s musical star has been on the rise ever since.

Xenia – A member of Blake’s team, few of her high school classmates even knew Xenia could sing – until now. The young artist from Temecula, California also plays the guitar, harmonica and piano by ear. The middle child in a family of five, Xenia draws strength and inspiration for her music from her family and from what she sees and hears in her daily life.

The 2011 Tour Dates:
July 27 – Los Angeles, CA at Gibson Amphitheatre
July 30 – Las Vegas, NV at MGM Grand Garden Arena
August 2 – Chicago, IL at Rosemont Theatre
August 4 – Boston, MA at Bank of America Pavilion
August 5 – Wallingford, CT at Oakdale Theatre
August 6 – New York, NY at Beacon Theatre

‘The Hunger Games’ Signs Up Danny Elfman and T Bone Burnett

Lionsgate just confirmed Academy Award winner and two-time nominee T Bone Burnett (Crazy Heart, Cold Mountain) and four-time Academy Award nominated composer Danny Elfman have signed on to provide the music for the highly anticipated film adaptation of The Hunger Games, based on the first in Suzanne Collins’ runaway bestselling book trilogy. The announcement was made by Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group President Joe Drake.

Elfman and Burnett will be collaborating on the film’s score, with Burnett also serving as the film’s Executive Music Producer, producing songs for the film and soundtrack.

Said Lionsgate’s Head of Film Music Tracy McKnight of the musical dream team assembled on behalf of the film, “The Hunger Games is such a special property – it has worldwide mass appeal, but it’s also sophisticated, cerebral, soulful, and rebellious. We needed a composer who can translate these qualities musically, and we have not one but two incredible artists in an absolutely thrilling first-time-ever collaboration.”

About T Bone Burnett:

T Bone Burnett’s 40 years of experience in music and entertainment have earned him an unparalleled reputation as a first-rate innovative artist, songwriter, producer, performer, concert producer, record company owner and artist advocate.

He is a 12-time Grammy Award winner, earning numerous statues in 2009 — including Album of the Year and Record of the Year — for his production work on Raising Sand, the worldwide smash album from Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. That same year, he was also awarded a Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album for his work on B.B. King’s One Kind Favor.

He received two Grammys in 2011 for his work on the music for the film Crazy Heart. He previously earned five Grammys® for his work on the 8-times Platinum release, O Brother Where Art Thou?, which also spawned two highly successful national concert tours. Further Grammys followed for his work on the platinum soundtrack to the Johnny Cash biopic, Walk The Line, and the platinum Tony Bennett / k.d. lang duets album, A Wonderful World.

T Bone produced the critically acclaimed hit film Crazy Heart. He also composed the film’s score and co-wrote many of its original songs, including “The Weary Kind,” which earned T Bone and co-writer Ryan Bingham, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Grammy® Award (plus an additional Grammy for Crazy Heart as Best Compilation Soundtrack album). T Bone’s work on that film also garnered him awards from the Broadcast Film Critics Association, as well as numerous other critics organizations throughout the U.S.

He was nominated for an Academy Award in 2004, along with Elvis Costello in the category of Best Original Song for “The Scarlet Tide” from the film Cold Mountain. For his work on that film, Burnett also earned the BAFTAs Anthony Asquith Award for Achievement in Film Music.

Burnett’s work as an in-demand music producer spans three decades and has resulted in some of music’s biggest-selling and most critically-lauded releases. He is currently producing album projects for Lisa Marie Presley and Jeff Bridges, which will be released in the second half of 2011. Burnett is also collaborating with Mellencamp and author Stephen King on the music for the play Ghost Brothers Of Darkland County. Other major productions include best-selling albums from Counting Crows, The Wallflowers, Los Lobos, Cassandra Wilson, Roy Orbison, and Ralph Stanley.

T Bone’s first major foray into film was his 1999 collaboration with the Coen Brothers on The Big Lebowski, for which he served as “Musical Archivist.” He has since served as Executive Music Producer on numerous additional films, including Across The Universe, the aforementioned Walk The Line (for which he also composed the score) and The Divine Secrets Of The Ya-Ya Sisterhood.

About Danny Elfman:

Danny Elfman has earned numerous honors, including a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, three Golden Globe nominations, and four Academy Award nominations. In 1998, he was honored with dual Oscar nominations for Best Original Score for his work on Barry Sonnenfeld’s Men in Black and Gus Van Sant’s Good Will Hunting. He received his third Oscar nomination for the score for Tim Burton’s acclaimed fantasy Big Fish. Elfman earned his most recent Oscar nomination for his score for the acclaimed biopic Milk, directed by Gus Van Sant and his most recent Golden Globe® nomination for his score to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.

In all, Elfman has composed more than 60 motion-picture scores of every genre, including Spider-Man (1 and 2), Batman, and Batman Returns, Men In Black (1 and 2), Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, To Die For, A Simple Plan, Mission: Impossible, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Family Man, Wanted, Taking Woodstock, Dick Tracy, Darkman, and Chicago.

For 17 years he wrote and performed with the rock band Oingo Boingo, producing such hits as “Weird Science” and “Dead Man’s Party.”

Elfman’s first full-length orchestral commission, Serenada Schizophrana premiered at Carnegie Hall. His first composition for ballet “Rabbit and Rogue” had its American Ballet Theatre (ABT) World Premiere at The Metropolitan Opera House at New York’s Lincoln Center in June 2008. The ballet was choreographed by Twyla Tharp and commissioned by ABT.

Elfman’s most recent film credits include the smash hit Alice In Wonderland, and the upcoming Real Steel, directed by Shawn Levy, Gus Van Sant’s Restless, Frankenweenie, and Dark Shadows.

His Cirque du Soleil show, “Iris” opens as a permanent show at Hollywood’s Kodak Theater in 2011.

About The Hunger Games:

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

The Hunger Games is directed by Gary Ross and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Collins’ best-selling novel, which has over 3 million copies in print in the United States alone, is the first in a trilogy of novels which have developed a global following.

Stephenie Meyer’s ‘The Host’ Film Adapation Goes to Open Road

The Host New Poster

The big screen adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s The Host will be distributed domestically by Open Road Films. Meyer, best known as the author of the bestselling Twilight series, will serve in a producer’s capacity on the feature film.

As previously announced, The Host will be directed by Andrew Niccol (Gattaca), who also wrote the screenplay, and will star Saoirse Ronan (Hanna, The Lovely Bones, Atonement). Open Road Films has set a March 29, 2013 release date (Easter weekend) for its theatrical release.

The Host producers are Nick Wechsler, Chockstone Pictures’ Paula Mae Schwartz and Steve Schwartz, and Stephenie Meyer. Marc Butan, Jim Siebel, and Bill Johnson of Inferno Entertainment, which is handling international sales, are executive producers. Claudia Bluemhuber of Silver Reel, which is providing mezzanine financing, is also an executive producer. Roger Schwartz and Lizzy Bradford are co-producers.

Principal photography is scheduled to being in February 2012 in Louisiana and New Mexico.

The Plot: The Host is a riveting story about the survival of love and the human spirit in a time of war. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds are taken over while their bodies remain intact. Most of humanity has succumbed.

When Melanie, one of the few remaining “wild” humans, is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading “soul” who has been given Melanie’s body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn’t expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.

The Host, published in 2008, was Stephenie Meyer’s highly anticipated follow-up to the wildly popular and acclaimed Twilight series. The book was #1 on The New York Times Bestseller List for 26 weeks. The Twilight film franchise, based on Stephenie Meyer’s beloved and best-selling novels, has grossed over $1.4 billion in worldwide box office ticket sales to date.

Regarding Open Road Films’ involvement, Stephenie Meyer stated, “I’m thrilled to be adding another fantastic partner to an already amazing group. Everyone involved has so much passion for the project. It really is a dream team.”

“We are privileged to partner with Stephenie Meyer and the rest of the filmmaking team for the release of The Host,” added Tom Ortenberg, CEO of Open Road Films. “Nick Wechsler is a terrific producer and a long-time friend and we are honored to be working with Nick and Stephenie – and the wonderful minds of Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz – to bring this epic story of hope to the big screen.”

Producers Nick Wechsler, Steve Schwartz, and Paula Mae Schwartz commented, “We are excited about the passion that Tom Ortenberg and Open Road Films has shown for The Host, and we think this is a great opportunity to be partnered with AMC and Regal at the beginning of their new joint venture.”

HBO’s ‘Love Crimes of Kabul’ Details Revealed

Love Crimes of Kabul Poster

HBO has set a July 11, 2011 premiere date for the documentary film Love Crimes of Kabul. The documentary examines the prisoners held at Badam Bagh Women’s Prison in Kabul, Afghanistan where half of the 125 people held were there for “crimes like drug smuggling, murder and attempted suicide bombing.” The rest were imprisoned for “moral crimes that include running away from home, adultery, and premarital sex.”

HBO released the following description of the new documentary:

Nine years after the fall of the Taliban, in a society where seeds of change are sprouting, but strict moral and legal codes of Sharia Family Law still apply, Iranian-American filmmaker Tanaz Eshaghian (HBO’s Be Like Others) goes behind the walls of Badam Bagh to give voice to three of these women. Shining a light on the pressures and paradoxes Afghan females face today – and the dangerous consequences when they refuse to fit in – Love Crimes of Kabul debuts on Monday, July 11 (9:00-10:15 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.

Granted unprecedented access to Badam Bagh Women’s Prison and Kabul Men’s Prison, as well as several Afghan courtrooms, Tanaz Eshaghian weathered dangerous and unpredictable prison conditions to craft intimate profiles of three subjects imprisoned and awaiting trial for alleged sexual transgressions, as well as their families and prison guards. If convicted, each could face up to 20 years in jail, although the sentence could be greatly reduced if the men in question agree to marry them, which is considered the only morally acceptable outcome.

Some of the young women’s modern ideas about attraction and relationships conflict with more traditional Afghan ways. They giddily describe their boyfriends as having desirable attributes (good looks, intelligence, etc.), yet marriage in Afghanistan is traditionally a set of financial agreements and transactions between families or tribes. Since marriage is the only way to avoid prolonged jail time, much pre-trial time is spent negotiating terms of marriage between their otherwise reluctant families.

Kareema, 20, is a tenacious and fearless Hazara whose striking beauty belies a strong survival streak. When her boyfriend Firuz got her pregnant and refused to marry her, Kareema voluntarily confessed their behavior to authorities, knowing her only hope of avoiding ruin as an unwed mother was to leverage conservative laws to her advantage. By getting Firuz as well as herself imprisoned, she has more chance of securing him as a husband, as marriage is his only chance of release. If he won’t comply, she faces years behind bars.

Aleema, 22, a fiercely independent woman with a quick temper and acid tongue, ran away from an abusive home and took refuge with a stranger named Zia. When Zia tried to sell Aleema to an undercover cop, both women were arrested. Forced to share a trial, they’re now involved in a bitter power struggle. Zia demands Aleema marry her son as retribution for getting her locked up. Aleema knows Zia could never afford the dowry of a virgin bride, and only wants her because a “shamed” woman like Aleema will be the ultimate cheap deal.

Sabereh, 18, is a wide-eyed, innocent young woman who was turned in by her father, who found her in a closet with a 17-year-old boy. Though her virginity is proven intact by court doctors, accusations against Sabereh build in intensity, and it is obvious that her boyfriend’s resistance to marriage will consign her to the cruelest fate.

A female guard at the Badam Bagh Women’s Prison in Kabul observes disdainfully that the prison is full “because these days women are given too much freedom.” The reality of women’s rights in the country is much different. With courtship, marriage, and sex strictly controlled by an ideology of honor, a young girl can be arrested and jailed simply for falling in love or running away from home, both of which are seen as akin to adultery.

Though transgression can bring ruin to an entire family, and both men and women can be arrested, women are seen as particular threats to the fabric of society and must be punished if they stray. As a social worker explains to Aleema, “A bad husband is better than no husband…None of this would have happened if you had a husband and a nice home.”

Love Crimes of Kabul concludes as the three subjects receive Afghan justice for their “crimes,” along with explanations for the rulings. Asked what will happen if people in Afghanistan are allowed to act on their desires, one judge replies, “Society’s order will be ruined.”

“I often look to tell stories about what it is like to live in the Middle East,” explains Tanaz Eshaghian. “I feel it is important for Western audiences to understand the logic that governs these societies as they make decisions.”

Love Crimes of Kabul is produced and directed by Tanaz Eshaghian; co-produced by Christoph Jörg; music by Florencia Di Concilio; edited by Jay Freund. For HBO: supervising producer, Sara Bernstein; executive producer, Sheila Nevins.
