Review: ‘Arthur the King’ Starring Mark Wahlberg

Mark Wahlberg and director Simon Cellan Jones (The Family Plan) join forces for Arthur the King, a film that tells the incredible true story of a dog who braved the jungle for over 400 miles to find a home. Wahlberg plays Michael Light, an adventure racer who is at the end of his career. In many ways, Michael is his own worst enemy, driven by his past failures and not really knowing the meaning of being part of a team.

Michael can’t work as a realtor for his father and is always preoccupied with thoughts of racing when he’s at home with his wife and daughter. Michael’s wife, Helen (Juliet Rylance), gives him the okay to do one final race – the Adventure Racing World Championship being held in the Dominican Republic – in hopes he’ll finally win and be able to move forward.

Michael secures sponsors and puts his four-member team back together, including Leo (Simu Liu), who has a large following on social media but usually butts heads with Michael; Chik (Ali Suliman), who’s suffering from a bum knee; and newcomer Olivia (Nathalie Emmanuel), an ace mountain climber.

As Michael is putting together his team, the film cuts to the streets of the Dominican Republic and to a smart and scruffy street dog. The dog’s appearance suggests a hard life, but he’s sly enough to avoid larger, meaner dogs and find scraps of food to stay alive.

Michael meets the street dog at the team’s first rest stop during the 400-mile race that consists of running, climbing, mountain biking, and kayaking. Michael notices the hungry dog and is impressed with the fact that he won’t beg for food. He gives the dog a few meatballs before continuing on with the race. What Michael doesn’t realize is that he has just made a loyal friend and new teammate.

Three days and 200 miles later, Michael and his team are surprised to find their scruffy friend has joined them in the rain-soaked jungle. When Leo tries to continue on in the dark and yells at the others to forget the “dumb dog,” he’s stopped in his tracks by the dog cutting in front of him. The dog barks and refuses to move. Michael grabs his flashlight and the team discovers that their canine buddy stopped Leo from falling off a cliff.

“Extra meatballs for you, my friend,” says an impressed Michael.

The team continues on with the race, now with their new canine team member close at their sides and occasionally leading the way. Michael names him Arthur for his strength and determination to lead them, just like a king.

Based on a true story, Arthur the King is an inspiring and suspenseful adventure, as well as a story about a man and his new best friend. It’s an entertaining and heartwarming film with a solid ensemble cast who are all upstaged by Ukai as Arthur.

Mark Wahlberg gives another memorable performance as Michael, a determined professional athlete at the end of his career, who will do whatever it takes to win. Wahlberg does a good job of portraying the change Michael goes through after meeting Arthur and having him become his new teammate. In fact, it’s Arthur who helps make Michael a real team leader and helps him realize the importance of loyalty and friendship.

It’s Ukai, however, who is the true star of the film, and boy, does he deliver. With his adorable scruffy face and stunning eyes, Ukai delivers the most authentic and moving performance in the film.

Jacques Jouffret’s impressive cinematography elevates the film, as do the terrific action sequences. Especially thrilling is the zip-lining sequence, but that’s all this critic will say about it. I wouldn’t want to spoil the experience.

Charming and heartfelt, Arthur the King is a sweet and moving underdog film that will have dog-loving audiences cheering and applauding through teary eyes.

Ghosts Description, Courtesy of CBS:

Ghosts is a single-camera comedy about Samantha (Sam) and Jay, a cheerful freelance journalist and up-and-coming chef from the city, respectively, who threw both caution and money to the wind when they decided to convert Woodstone Mansion, which Sam in inherited, into a bed & breakfast – only to find it was inhabited by the many spirits of deceased residents who now call it home.

The departed souls are a close-knit, eclectic group that includes a saucy Prohibition-era lounge singer (Danielle Pinnock); a pompous 18th-century militiaman (Brandon Scott Jones); an overly upbeat ‘80s scout troop leader (Richie Moriarty); a cod-obsessed Viking explorer from 1009 (Devon Chandler Long); a ‘60s hippie fond of hallucinogens (Sheila Carrasco); a slick ‘90s finance bro (Asher Grodman); a sarcastic and witty native from the 16th-century (Román Zaragoza); and a society woman and wife of a 19th-century robber baron who is Sam’s ancestor (Rebecca Wisocky), to name a few. The opening of the B&B has been a source of intrigue, anxiety and curiosity among the spirits, but they will gladly put up with the commotion as long as they can continue to interact with a living inhabitant.

‘Elsbeth’ Episode 2 Preview: Cast, Photos and “A Classic New York Character” Promo

CBS’s new midseason drama Elsbeth returns to the network’s primetime lineup with an episode that features guest stars Linda Lavin and Jane Krakowski. Season one episode two, “A Classic New York Character,” will air on Thursday, April 4, 2024 at 9pm ET/PT. Episode three, “Reality Shock,” follows at 10pm ET/PT.

The new primetime drama kicked off with an episode that featured a friend of Carrie Preston’s, Stephen Moyer. During a press conference prior to the premiere, Preston talked about reuniting with her True Blood co-star.

“You know, True Blood, I mean, it holds a special special place in my heart. My career sort of took off in a way that it hadn’t before that show, and so we all bonded. We made True Blood kind of in a vacuum, and then it aired. […] We weren’t even together. So, we all like bonded over that show, and he, in particular, was like a real cast leader – he and Anna (Paquin) together, real cast leaders. He’s such a personable person. He’s so outgoing and everything, and so when they were casting this role on Elsbeth, I kept thinking, ‘Gosh! He would be so perfect because he’s so charming, but he can also be really dark, obviously,'” said Preston.

Preston continued: “But having him on set during the pilot was such a comfort to me because the stakes are really high. I wanted the show to be amazing, and, you know, you’re nervous. And [Robert King and Michelle King] wrote this gorgeous script with these epic scenes. This is a very dialogue-heavy show and so I really wanted somebody who could really do that kind of scene work, somebody who understood that, and that’s Steven times one billion. And so that just gave me such real security, you know, in a sometimes like nerve-wracking situation. It was never that on this this pilot, because of Robert and Michelle and Stephen. And you know Wendell (Pierce) and Carra (Patterson), it was just a really beautiful experience, that pilot time of my life. Really.”

In addition to Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni, season one stars Wendell Pierce as Captain C.W. Wagner and Carra Patterson as Officer Kaya Blanke. Jonathan Tolins guides the series as showrunner and also executive produces along with Liz Glotzer.

“A Classic New York Character” Plot: After the loathed co-op board president (Lavin) of a luxury pre-war building falls off her balcony to her death, Elsbeth and Kaya are called to the scene to dig for a lead when they meet Joann (Krakowski), a high-powered Manhattan real estate broker with huge clients and even bigger secrets.

Elsbeth Plot, Courtesy of CBS:

Elsbeth stars Emmy Award winner Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni, an astute but unconventional attorney who utilizes her singular point of view to make unique observations and corner brilliant criminals alongside the NYPD. After leaving her successful legal career in Chicago to tackle a new investigative role in New York City, Elsbeth finds herself jockeying with the toast of the NYPD, Captain C.W. Wagner (Pierce), a charismatic and revered leader. Working alongside Elsbeth is Officer Kaya Blanke (Patterson), a stoic and ethical officer who quickly develops an appreciation for Elsbeth’s insightful and offbeat ways.

‘Love Lies Bleeding’ Review – Rose Glass Proves She’s a Filmmaker to Watch

Love Lies Bleeding
Katy O’Brian and Kristen Stewart in ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ (Photo Credit: Anna Kooris / A24)

One of the big casualties of the 2020 pandemic was the horror movie Saint Maud, whose release was delayed by almost a full year. Despite its delay, the film was still a hit with fans, and many have been waiting even more patiently to see what writer/director Rose Glass would do next. That wait is over. Her newest movie, Love Lies Bleeding, is here.

Set in New Mexico in the 1980s, Love Lies Bleeding is about a young woman named Lou (Spencer’s Kristen Stewart) who befriends a female bodybuilder named Jackie (Katy O’Brian from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania) who is passing through town on her way to a competition in Las Vegas. The pair strikes up a relationship that leads them to mischief, mayhem, and murder involving Lou’s father (Ed Harris from A History of Violence) and sister (The Neon Demon’s Jena Malone), as well as her sister’s abusive husband (The Disaster Artist’s Dave Franco).

Rose Glass co-wrote the screenplay for Love Lies Bleeding along with London-based Polish filmmaker Weronika Tofilska. For this sophomore effort, Glass makes less of a pure horror movie than Saint Maud, instead choosing to play around in the same pulpy schlock sandbox as the Coen Brothers or Quentin Tarantino. The story deals with a rash of serious subjects from domestic violence to steroid abuse, but mostly, it’s a revenge thriller, violent and brutal, with enough “unintentional” intentional comedy and dark humor to let the viewer come up for air every once in a while. It’s Girl Power Grindhouse – a Thelma and Louise for the next generation.

Like any good crime thriller, there are no sympathetic characters in Love Lies Bleeding. Sure, there are heroes and villains, and there are redemption arcs for both Lou and Jackie, but no one is really “innocent.” Well, maybe Jena Malone’s sister character, but even she allows her abusive situation to continue for far longer than she should, so she inspires more anger and frustration than empathy. There are no black-and-white good and bad guys, just different shades of grey with differing levels of guilt. And that’s what makes the twisting and turning plot so engaging – you never know who is right or wrong, you just know who you’re rooting for.

With Love Lies Bleeding, Kristen Stewart continues piling up gutsy role choices and great performances in her post-Twilight career. Ed Harris is menacing as the evil patriarch and Dave Franco makes the viewer want to punch him in the face as the butthole husband, but the real MVP of the movie is Katy O’Brian. Her ambitious-yet-misguided Jackie is the performance that drives the film, and her lusty chemistry with Stewart sets the screen ablaze. O’Brian is part action hero and part dramatic thespian, making Jackie the most layered character in a film full of layered characters.

And then, there’s the ending. Without spoiling anything, if the ending of Saint Maud left people scratching their heads, the ending of Love Lies Bleeding will have them rolling on the floor in stitches. Both endings make the audience question the reality of everything that they have just seen and force them to wonder exactly whose version of events they’ve been exposed to, but the surreal climactic scene in Love Lies Bleeding borders on the absurd. This ending will be analyzed and scrutinized and still will leave people perplexed.

To say that Love Lies Bleeding is a less subtle movie than Saint Maud would be an understatement. But with her second feature, Rose Glass proves herself to be a filmmaker whose skill and talent are rivaled only by her creativity and versatility. She remains one to watch, and fans will again wait with bated breath for whatever she does next.

‘The Crow’ Trailer Starring Bill Skarsgard and FKA Twigs

Lionsgate’s official trailer for The Crow is three minutes of action and spoilers for those who aren’t familiar with the the original graphic novel by James O’Barr or the 1993 film adaptation starring Brandon Lee. The trailer arrived with a new still of Bill Skarsgard as the titular character and the official theatrical poster.

Skarsgard (It‘s Pennywise the Clown) stars as Eric, a character he says he was honored to take on.

“But really what drew me to it was what Rupert Sanders wanted to do with it. He wanted to completely reimagine the story and the character and tailor it towards a modern audience. It’s a character that I know many revere and have a strong connection to – he is unlike any I’ve ever taken on before,” explained Skarsgard. “Working with the remarkably talented FKA Twigs was magical. I felt a responsibility to Eric’s story and endeavored to stay true to the spirit of the source material; I can’t wait for the world to see the film, and hope it resonates with audiences as strongly as it did with those of us involved.”

Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) directed from a screenplay by Zach Baylin and William Schneider. Edward R. Pressman, Samuel Hadida, Victor Hadida, John Jencks, and Molly Hassell served as producers.

“The Crow is the original anti-superhero. His story is about tragic loss, about dealing with the pain of everything that comes with losing someone you love, something that all of us have or will encounter at some point in our lives. It is about the dark shadow of grief, about what we would do when something so meaningful is taken from us,” explained Sanders. “The original graphic novel is deeply meaningful for so many, and the character, his journey and his need for revenge has inspired a canon of films for the last three decades. Our version goes back to that graphic novel by James O’Barr, who I had the honour of meeting shortly before production, and explores the love story as the primary drive for our film.”

Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.
