‘Hoppers’ Review: A Visually Stunning, Slightly Long Environmental Adventure

Hoppers Review

To be one with nature and to communicate with the animals is the focus of Pixar’s 2026 animated film Hoppers.

19-year-old Mabel (voiced by Piper Curda) has been a huge fan of all animals since she was a kid. When the film opens, little Mabel tries to sneak out all the class pets in her school—including a turtle, guinea pigs, fish, and other small creatures—but gets caught and punished by the school and her mom. Only her grandma (voiced by Karen Huie) seems to understand Mabel’s deep love for animals and anger toward those who would capture and keep wildlife.

Mabel’s grandma takes her to a beautiful glade, where she teaches her to calm herself and take in all the creatures living there. This sparks her love and passion for conservation.

Fast forward to a 19-year-old Mabel, who is always at odds with Mayor Jerry Generazzo (voiced wonderfully by Jon Hamm) over his efforts to expand the city at the cost of cutting into the existing wildlife. The latest battle now involves trying to stop the mayor from building a beltway over the glade.

When she’s not trying to save her beloved glade, Mabel attends Beaverton University. It’s there that she accidentally discovers new technology created by her favorite professor, Dr. Sam (voiced by Kathy Najimy), that allows a person to transfer their consciousness into a robot that looks exactly like a living animal to fool the real animals into believing that the robot is an animal.

“Guys, this is like Avatar,” says an impressed Mabel. “This is nothing like Avatar,” replies Dr. Sam, a little annoyed with Mabel for the comparison.

Mabel sees a chance to use this technology to save the glade. She transports her consciousness into a beaver robot, against Dr. Sam’s protests, and she escapes into the wild. Now Mabel, as the beaver robot, looks for animals to communicate with them and try to convince them to move back to the glade.

Her search leads to King George (voiced by Bobby Moynihan), who has created a new home for the animals displaced by the mayor’s beltway work. Beaver robot Mabel has her work cut out for her trying to get King George, along with hyper-energized lizard Tom (voiced by Tom Law); a huge grumpy grizzly bear named Ellen (voiced by Melissa Villasenor); and other creatures to move back to the glade to save it.

Visually stunning and extremely funny, Hoppers is a chaotic, warm-hearted adventure with a positive message about working together to overcome obstacles and about saving the environment.

The film has a fantastic voice cast led by Piper Curda, who brings to life Mabel’s determination, love of nature, and even her occasional selfishness in using others to get her own way. She’s a refreshing, multi-layered heroine for a Pixar film.

Jon Hamm is hilarious as the voice of Mayor Jerry Generazzo, the smooth, smiling politician who loves himself more than the community he represents and is determined to build the beltway no matter what the cost. Hamm really shines comedically in the second half of the film when Jerry becomes the focus of some of the animals’ wrath.

Hoppers is breathtaking to look at with lush, bright animation, and it’s jam-packed with zany and comical action. The only issue is with the film’s runtime, coming in at 106 minutes, which is about 20 minutes too long. The children at this critic’s screening were getting antsy and bored until the big crisis near the end of the film…which is actually another concern. The dark and dangerous tone of the film during the crisis may be too intense for children under seven.

Still, with marvelous animation, a stellar voice cast, and solid messages about friendship, compassion, and environmental awareness, Hoppers may not be in the upper tier of Pixar films, but it’s definitely a fun addition to their roster.

Ghosts Series Description, Courtesy of CBS:

Ghosts is a single-camera comedy about Samantha and Jay, a cheerful freelance journalist and chef from the city, respectively, who threw both caution and money to the wind when they decided to convert Woodstone Mansion, which Sam inherited, into a bed & breakfast—only to find it was inhabited by the many spirits of deceased residents who now call it home.

The departed souls are a close-knit, eclectic group that includes a saucy Prohibition-era lounge singer (Pinnock); a pompous 18th-century militiaman (Scott Jones); a ‘60s hippie fond of hallucinogens (Carrasco); an overly upbeat ‘80s scout troop leader (Moriarty); a cod-obsessed Viking explorer from 1009 (Chandler Long); a slick ‘90s finance bro (Grodman); a sarcastic and witty native from the 16th century (Zaragoza); and a society woman and wife of a 19th-century robber baron who is Sam’s ancestor (Wisocky), to name a few.

The opening of the B&B and Jay’s new restaurant are a source of intrigue, anxiety, and curiosity among the spirits, but they will gladly put up with the commotion as long as they can continue to interact with a living inhabitant.

Fox Renews ‘Best Medicine’ for Season 2: Everything We Know So Far

Best Medicine Josh Segarra and Josh Charles

Fox officially renewed the medical dramedy Best Medicine for a second season. The new series starring Josh Charles earned a renewal ahead of its ninth episode, airing on March 3, 2026 and featuring original Doc Martin star Martin Clunes.

Best Medicine quickly became a breakout for us this season, blending sharp humor with real heart,” stated Michael Thorn, President of FOX Television Network. “Liz Tuccillo brings a distinctive creative voice to the series, and Josh Charles leads an exceptional cast that audiences have embraced. We, along with Propogate, are excited to build on that momentum in season two.”

Josh Charles stars as Dr. Martin Best, Abigail Spencer (Suits) is Louisa Gavin, Annie Potts (Young Sheldon) is Aunt Sarah, Josh Segarra (Sirens) plays Sheriff Mark Mylow, and Cree (Twinless) is Elaine Denton. Recurring season one guest stars include Didi Conn as councilwoman Geneva Potter, Clea Lewis as pharmacist Sally Mylow, Stephen Spinella as Greg Garrison, Jason Veasey as George Brady, Cindy De La Cruz as Jeannie, John DiMaggio as Bert Large, Carter Shimp as Al Large, and Wattson as Copernicus.

The series premiered in January 2026 and drew in 12.6 million viewers. Fox hasn’t announced a target premiere date for the 12-episode second season.

Liz Tuccillo serves as executive producer and showrunner. Additional executive producers include Ben Silverman, Rodney Ferrell, Howard T. Owens, Mark Crowdy, and Philippa Braithwaite.

Fox’s official synopsis:

“The series centers on Dr. Martin Best, a brilliant surgeon who abruptly leaves his illustrious career in Boston to become the general practitioner in a quaint East Coast fishing village where he spent summers as a child with his Aunt Sarah. There, he encounters an eclectic group of townspeople, including schoolteacher Louisa Gavin, Sheriff Mark Mylow, and his assistant Elaine Denton.

Martin’s blunt, no-nonsense bedside manner quickly alienates the quirky locals, even though he is the only doctor they have. While he can expertly diagnose any medical mystery, he struggles with a debilitating new phobia and childhood trauma that make intimacy difficult. In a town defined by tenacity and heart, the very people Martin pushes away may ultimately be exactly what he needs.”

‘Zombies 5’ Cast & Plot Revealed: Meet the New Mermaids Making Waves

Zombies 5 Stars
Freya Skye and Malachi Barton in ‘Zombies 4’ (Disney/Matt Klitscher)

Disney Channel and Disney+ have greenlit a fifth film in the popular Zombies franchise. Zombies 5 will bring back Malachi Barton and Freya Skye as Victor and Nova, and original franchise stars Milo Manheim and Meg Donnelly will be involved as executive producers.

Disney Channel hasn’t confirmed a target premiere date for Zombies 5. The film franchise premiered in February 2018, Zombies 2 was released in February 2020, and Zombies 3 debuted in July 2022. Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires premiered in July 2025. Zombies 5 is expected to begin production this spring.

Zombies has become a defining franchise for the current generation,” stated Ayo Davis, president, Disney Branded Television. “With each movie, we intentionally push the story somewhere new. Introducing mermaids in Zombies 5 opens up a completely different dynamic while staying true to the music, characters, and themes of unity and acceptance that are at the heart of these films.”

In addition to Barton and Skye, Trevor Tordjman returns as Bucky, Swayam Bhatia as Vera, Julian Lerner as Ray, and Mekonnen Knife as Vargas. Emily Costtrici is new to the franchise and is set to play zombie Izzy, Zed’s zombie cousin and new transfer student.

Disney Channel offers this synopsis of the new franchise entry: “Following the events of Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires, the newfound peace between the Daywalkers and Vampires is put to the test when a band of fierce mermaids arrives in Rayburn, making waves and casting a persuasive siren song to lure in new allies. Nova and Victor must unite their groups once more to discover what the mermaids are really after in order to protect the fragile harmony they worked so hard to build.”

The mermaids will be played by Diaana Babnicova as cool-girl Pearl, Taylor Oliver as bad-boy Fin, and Olive Mortimer as tech-wiz Sandy.

Paul Hoen returns to direct and executive produce the fifth film. Additional executive producers include Manheim, Donnelly, Jane Fleming, Mark Ordesky, Joseph Raso, and David Light. Dondraico Johnson is on board as a choreographer, and Tom Howe is writing the original score. Chris Hazzard, Michael Fontana, and Eydie Faye are the writers.

‘Tracker’ Season 3 Episode 10 Recap: “The Fallout”

Tracker Season 3 Episode 10 Recap
Sofia Pernas as Billie and Justin Hartley as Colter Shaw in ‘Tracker’ season 3 episode 10 (Photo: Sergei Bachlakov © 2025 CBS Broadcasting, Inc.)

CBS’s Tracker season three, episode 10—part two of the midseason finale—picks up with Colter (Justin Hartley) injured and struggling to get out of his truck after being shot at. The truck landed upside down over a cliff, and Colter manages to get Keaton (Brent Sexton) out of the overturned truck. Colter grabs some moss and places it on Keaton’s gunshot wound before taking off to find help.

(The following is a recap of season three, episode 10, and there are spoilers.)

Colter makes his way to parked cars, breaks into one, and grabs a cellphone. He calls 9-1-1 and to get help for Keaton.

Detective Willa Simms (Jes Macallan) reports to Police Commissioner Ross Bogart (Sasha Roiz), informing him Colter’s the one who called for help. She believes the murdered accountant at the lake house is connected to Menassian’s killing but doesn’t understand how it all ties into Colter. Apparently, the FBI is leaning toward Colter being a suspect since he was at Menassian’s murder scene as well as the lake house.

Randy (Chris Lee) shows Reenie (Fiona Rene) a video of Bogart’s press conference naming Emile Lang and Colter as persons of interest. They’re suspected of being armed and dangerous. Neither Reenie nor Randy can reach Colter, and they realize something’s wrong.

Colter passed out next to the car after calling 9-1-1, and when he comes to, he immediately calls Reenie. He believes Lang ambushed him and Keaton, and he’s shocked to learn he’s currently being sought as a murder suspect. Colter’s also surprised to hear the accountant and his housekeeper were killed. The housekeeper was alive when he left, so Lang must have killed her.

Colter asks Randy to send the cops the video of Dobbs killing Menassian, but unfortunately Randy can’t. The video’s been wiped. Colter’s definitely being set up. Before getting off the phone, he warns Reenie not to call his brother.

Minutes later, the FBI arrives at Reenie’s office with a warrant to search for anything pertaining to Colter’s employment. Reenie accepts it but warns them she’ll be observing everything they do.

Billie (Sofia Pernas) picks up Colter since they need to keep his whereabouts hush-hush. They hole up in an Airbnb, and she takes care of his injuries while Colter grunts and nearly passes out. Billie’s able to remove a bullet and promises they’ll figure out who’s setting him up.

Colter thinks Lang’s tracking Cassie Lindstrom, so she must be related to the dead office at a nearby nightclub. Billie does a quick search and learns Cassie is the dead officer’s wife. Colter thinks they should check out the town she moved to after his murder.

Before they can leave, the cops pull up, and Colter decides he needs to go alone. He’ll head to Cassie’s while Billie deals with the police. Billie quickly packs a to-go bag with a burner phone and cash.

Colter barely makes it out before the cops barge in.

Randy manages to wipe his drive before the FBI grabs his laptop. Unfortunately, that means he doesn’t have a way of tracking Colter.

Colter makes his way around Cassie’s place, and it looks like she left suddenly. There’s moldy food sitting out and her laptop is open. He spots a trail of blood in the kitchen and follows it outside. The blood trail stops in the driveway, and he spots a security camera next door. He calls the office next to Reenie’s—basically his way of warning her not to use her office phone to call him. Randy has a burner stashed and Colter gives him info on the surveillance. Since Randy hit his dead man’s switch, he’s going to have to rebuild his system.

Randy borrows a laptop from a friend to look into the security camera and calls Colter. Colter looks through Cassie’s computer and realizes she’s been gone for five days—before any of the murders took place. Randy finds a neighbor’s security camera from five days ago and sees two men take Cassie away in a van. This was before Lang killed the farmer, Menassian, or Dobbs, and may have actually been what set the murderer in motion.

Randy sends Colter details about the van’s owner, a local construction company. Colter doesn’t believe the kidnappers are working with Lang. The kidnappers are trying to frame Colter, and Lang’s not trying to kill Cassie. There’s another player they haven’t identified yet.

Billie picks up Colter after making sure she’s not being tailed. They head to the construction company and find the van in the parking lot, door open and blood on the driver’s seat. Drag marks indicate someone was pulled through the yard and into the office. Inside, Colter finds one of the men who took Cassie. It looks like he was tortured before he was killed.

The dead man is a cop named Dominic Mendoza. Colter calls Randy and Randy discovers Mendoza and Dobbs worked on the same vice task force. Their target was Zahn Menassian. Also, Cassie’s husband was on the same task force before he was killed in the line of duty. Other officers on the task force included Henry Easton, Neil Barton, and Willa Simms.

Simms was the detective who showed up to look for Colter at the Airbnb, and Billie reminds Colter she said Simms gave her weird vibes. Randy notes Simms transferred out of the task force seven years ago. The task force must have been getting kickbacks from Menassian, and now they’re framing Colter. Lang seems to be wiping them out one by one, but it doesn’t make sense that he’d come after Colter and Keaton. Also, why would the cops kidnap Cassie and have Lang start killing people off all these years later? Colter wonders if the task force cops were the ones shooting at him, not Lang.

Billie finds a matchbook from Fireside Bar, so that’s their next stop. Billie goes in without Colter since his facial injuries would make him stand out. She spots a framed newspaper article and sees Lang in the photo, working at the bar and grill. The manager informs her that Lang is a line cook there, using an alias. The article was published two weeks ago, and someone must have recognized him. The dirty cops came there looking for him, setting off the whole chain of killings.

Billie’s forced to lead the cops on a chase away from Colter after they’re spotted in Firestone’s parking lot. Unfortunately, she doesn’t make it far before getting boxed in by Simms and half a dozen other cars. Simms sends out an alert that Colter’s on the run in the area.

Billie questions Simms on their ride to the station, accusing her of being part of a task force that was on the take and being paid by Menassian. When Billie brings up Cassie’s abduction, it’s obvious that Simms doesn’t know what she’s talking about.

Colter locates an unlocked car, hotwires it, and drives off. He calls Randy and tells him Lang was going by the name Benny Sheridan, and Randy doesn’t find any properties under that name. However, he does find a trailer currently parked in an RV park.

Task force member Henry Easton arrives home and discovers Lang (Mark Engelhardt) beat him there and has tied up his wife. Lang asks where Cassie is and Henry claims not to know. Lang informs Mrs. Easton that her husband and his friends kidnapped Cassie to get to him. When Henry asks him to leave his wife out of this, Lang refuses. After all, Mrs. Easton must have known about the kickbacks, given the beautiful house they live in.

Lang admits he killed Officer Jack Lindstrom, believing he double-crossed the boss. He subsequently found out Easton and the others lied. Lindstrom was innocent.

Henry only agrees to talk after Lang threatens to cut off his wife’s finger.

Colter breaks into Lang’s trailer and finds photos of Lang and Cassie. They’re definitely a couple. Colter also finds a box of files from the lake house that includes ledgers handwritten by the accountant. He’s shocked to read one name in particular.

Simms meets Commissioner Bogart late at night in a secluded area. She informs him she learned from Billie that the task force he created was taking kickbacks from Menassian. Bogart pretends to be innocent, but Simms reminds him that he removed her from the task force when she began to ask questions. Bogart warns her to be careful and then pulls his gun, shooting her multiple times in the chest.

Bogart returns to the station and Colter sneaks up on him, ordering the dirty cop to take him to Cassie. They drive to a warehouse and Colter has Bogart uncuff Cassie. Another cop enters, and Bogart yells for him to shoot Colter, but Colter is too quick and takes him out.

Bogart holds Cassie by the neck and threatens to break it. However, Lang also made it to the warehouse and shoots Bogart in the head. Lang puts down his gun and apologizes to Cassie for lying to her; she thinks he’s a line cook named Benny—not an ex-cop.

Reenie gets Billie cleared of any involvement and she visits Colter in Keaton’s hospital room. Keaton’s still not out of the woods but Billie thinks he’ll live. Colter thanks Billie for all her help, admitting he couldn’t have done it without her. Episode 10 ends with Billie agreeing to grab a beer with Colter.

‘Marshals’ Episode 1 Recap: “Piya Wiconi”

Marshals Episode 1 Recap
Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton in ‘Marshals’ episode 1 (Photo: Fred Hayes © 2025 CBS Broadcasting, Inc)

The Yellowstone universe expands with CBS’s Marshals starring Luke Grimes reprising his role as Kayce Dutton. The series is set a while after the events of Yellowstone’s series finale and focuses on Kayce, his son Tate, and Kayce’s new job as a US Marshal.

(The following is a recap of episode one, “Piya Wiconi,”  and contains spoilers.)

Kayce wakes from a dream about Monica and glances at the empty pillow next to him. He stares at himself in the mirror before heading out with Tate (Brecken Merrill) to herd cattle. Kayce spots a wolf in the distance, takes aim, but doesn’t shoot.

Tate’s supposed to work on the corral later, but instead he’s committed to spending the night on the rez after a meeting about an upcoming protest. Kayce makes breakfast and admits Monica was much better at this than he is.

US Marshal Pete ‘Cal’ Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) pulls up with a box of explosives, and it’s obvious he and Kayce have a brotherly relationship. They were on the same SEAL team (Pete was the team leader) and Cal can’t believe Kayce’s satisfied working on the ranch, given his military experience.

“So much for evolve or die,” jokes Cal.

Cal’s genuinely worried about Kayce’s mental health and volunteers to help with the explosives. They head out on horseback and Cal admits that after being here for three months and gathering a team, he doesn’t get the way of life. Apparently while they were in the SEALs together, Kayce never mentioned he was from a wealthy Montana family.

Kayce and Cal knock down trees with a combo of explosives and gunshots, and Cal confirms he’s a better shot now than when they served together. Even in Montana, the marshals have their hands full taking down gangs and cartels. Cal doesn’t understand how Kayce’s satisfied living such a quiet life. He confesses that after he got out of the Navy, he was messed up on drugs and angry at the world. The marshals helped him get his life back in shape, and he asks Kayce to join his team.

“My life’s been kill or be killed for too long, man,” replies Kayce.

Cal’s okay with that but could use Kayce’s help on a case near the Duttons’ old ranch. Kayce thinks two fugitives must be in an old cabin that’s not accessible to tenderfoots – like Cal. Kayce doesn’t seem interested until Cal adds that the fugitives are preying on rez women.

Over at the Painted Horse Casino, Broken Rock Chairman Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) heads a meeting about a mine the government has planned nearby. The mine isn’t on the tribe’s land, but it will affect their river. It will likely increase the reservation’s cancer rate, and Thomas points out the government has never cared that they’ve dumped poisons on their land or in their water.

Marshals Episode 1 Recap

Cal introduces Kayce to his team: Andrea Santos (Ash Santos), Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel), and Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means). Andrea’s not big on horseback riding, but Cal advises them that it’s the only way to get into the area. He puts Kayce in charge since he knows the area.

Belle, Miles, and Andrea discuss the Duttons out of Kayce’s earshot, and Andrea has no idea who they are. Belle fills her in on Kayce’s backstory, including John’s murder.

Kayce doesn’t join them as they prepare to enter the cabin, preferring to let the marshals handle it. But after they walk away, he follows. Kayce spots a man on horseback just as he starts shooting at the marshals. The fugitive rides off and Kayce gives chase while dodging bullets. Belle catches up and Kayce suggests they get ahead of the fleeing fugitive by taking a different path. They quickly place a rope chest-high between trees. The fugitive crashes into it and gets knocked out of his saddle.

Kayce joins them for drinks at the bar that night, which gives the series’ first episode the perfect opportunity to fill out backstories on the team. Belle is a former ATF agent who’s an undercover specialist. Andrea’s father was a cop, and she joined the marshals to avenge him. She got kicked out of her unit in DC, and Cal teases that she’s a rebel. It was confirmed earlier in the episode that Miles is a member of Broken Rock.

Andrea changes the music on the jukebox and Belle warns her, “There are three things you don’t do in Montana: pet the buffalo, try to outdrink Canadians, and mess with cowboys’ music.”

The bar’s getting louder and Cal suggests they head home. Tomorrow’s mine rally is expected to keep them busy, and Kayce says Tate will be there at the protest. He offers to help as a one-time deal, and Cal instantly deputizes him.

The rally’s fairly peaceful, but the crowd’s big and Cal notes that Kayce’s come well-armed. The protestors hold photos and Miles explains that they’re of cancer victims who became sick due to the toxins dumped onto the reservation.

Kayce spots Tate and asks him to go home, but Tate feels like he needs to be there. He doesn’t care if this could turn violent. Tate’s surprised his dad’s acting as a marshal, and Kayce explains he’s just helping Cal. Tate won’t leave and points out that after how much his mom suffered, Kayce should be part of the protest too.

Tate stares at his dad and then holds up a framed photo of Monica.

Thomas and Mo Brings Plenty are happy to see the “reclusive” Kayce Dutton, and Kayce’s all smiles as they talk. He admits he’s helping because Tate’s there and doesn’t want him to get in trouble. Thomas makes a joke about a Dutton father and son who don’t see eye-to-eye and then asks about the ranch. Kayce says, “We have 5,000 acres, 300 pairs, and a disobedient teenager. I’m living the dream.”

Kayce explains that Monica picked out a spot in East Camp for him to come visit her after she died. Miles interrupts to grab Kayce because the Secretary of the Interior is on her way to deliver a speech, and Thomas confirms Miles is a good guy.

Cal’s boss, Harry Gifford (Brett Cullen), arrives to greet Secretary Clark and introduces Clark’s security personnel to Cal. Harry explains he formed Cal’s marshal team as the last line of defense in the area.

The Secretary tries to speak but the protesters drown her out. Kayce spots a hooded figure in the edge of the woods and radios that he’s got eyes on a possible triggerman. Belle quickly scans the area and spots an abandoned backpack near the stage. Secretary Clark is rushed off the stage just as it explodes

Unfortunately, Thomas is injured in the blast.

Kayce takes Tate home and then returns to help Cal with the investigation. Gifford credits Cal’s team with quick thinking but needs them to find the perpetrators quickly. Andrea points out there aren’t surveillance cameras, so it’ll be tough going. Gifford demands that Cal find the bomber before Washington “cleans his plow.”

Belle’s got the pressure cooker lid from the bomb, indicating it was homemade. She’ll work on tracing the bomb while Miles tries to gather any local media footage. Andrea and Kayce will head to the hospital to talk to the people who were injured.

Over at the hospital, Mo tells Kayce this is one of Broken Rock’s darkest days. Thomas is still in surgery, and Mo notes that violence has a way of finding the Duttons.

Belle’s used her ATF contacts to determine the explosive powder came from the Montana Department of Energy. The pressure cooker lid’s serial number tracks to Buckner’s Hardware near Broken Rock. However, the person who bought it paid in cash so they can’t track their identity.

Harry jumps to the conclusion that someone on the rez is the bomber. Miles suggests they keep looking for evidence instead of blaming someone from Broken Rock.

They discover footage of someone with the backpack moving through the crowd. Facial recognition identifies the person as tribe member Jim Kaine, and he has access to explosives through his job. Miles reveals Jim’s brother died of cancer; that could be the motive.

Kayce believes the bomb went off right after it was left near the stage, which means Jim could be injured. A nurse confirms Jim was treated as a John Doe and is in recovery. Andrea places him under arrest as a person of interest.

Kayce remains in Jim’s room as a male nurse comes in to check on him. Jim indicates with his eyes that something’s going on, glancing at the man’s shoes. Kayce follows his eyes, gets a look at the shoes that don’t go with the scrubs, and follows the man upstairs to a restroom. The man leaps out of a toilet stall and attacks Kayce with a knife. Kayce tries to dodge the blade but loses his gun. They have a brutal fight over the knife that ends with Kayce retrieving his gun and shooting the man multiple times in the chest.

Belle discovers the man is John Decker, an Army vet who worked with Jim on an oil rig. Jim had access to the explosives and John knew how to make bombs.

Kayce doesn’t believe Jim’s a killer and as John’s body is wheeled by, Kayce stops them to open John’s phone with facial ID. John has a game open on his phone, and Kayce knows that during the war, people communicated via game chat rooms. He opens the chat and sees a video of Jim’s wife and daughter being held hostage.

Kayce gets Jim to tell him that they’re holding his wife and daughter to make him help with the bombing. He doesn’t know where they’re being held but does know the target was actually Rainwater—not the Secretary.

Decker is part of the Trailkeepers survivalist group that is anti-land back. When Rainwater campaigned to get their land returned, it put him in their crosshairs. Finding the group is their best chance of retrieving Jim’s family.

Harry isn’t thrilled to have a Dutton working with the team, but Cal stands by his friend, reminding his boss that Kayce’s a war hero. Harry’s never liked the Duttons or their reputation for being beyond the law. But Cal refuses to get rid of Kayce, suggesting Harry do it himself if he wants him gone.

Jim’s daughter had a tracker and it indicates she’s about 100 miles away. Andrea stays behind to monitor the action while the rest head out in a helicopter. Andrea asks Harry how the Trailkeepers could have known about the secretary’s movements three days before it was publicly announced. Harry’s impressed and says it’s a good catch.

Marshals Episode 1 Recap

Quick research shows Decker’s connected to the local Fish, Game, and Parks director, Owen Kilborn, who’s been included in the planning and investigation. Harry realizes Owen knows about the team heading to the Trailblazers’ location, just as the team comes under fire at the remote house. Gunfire’s exchanged and Kayce’s responsible for most of the shots that hit their marks.

Belle’s hit in the vest area and Miles helps her. Jim’s wife is located, still tied to a heater, but her daughter is missing. Her shoe, with the tracker, was left behind and Kayce realizes they were lured to the location.

Kayce tortures one of the injured men until he says they’re heading to a lake. The team makes it to the lake and one of the men holds Jim’s daughter as a shield. The kidnapper forces Cal to put down his weapon but doesn’t notice Kayce in the shadows. Kayce fires one shot and hits him while he’s still holding Jim’s daughter. With his dying breath he says, “You’ve stopped nothing.”

Owen received $250,000 for the bombing and would have gotten away with it if Jim had died. Cal suggests they take the win and is proud of his “modern-day posse.”

Cal grabs a quiet moment alone, takes a pill, holds a photo of his young daughter, and briefly cries.

Kayce realizes he knows Belle as an Isabelle whose family breeds cutting horses. She asks that he keep that information to himself, and Kayce agrees. The team relaxes and goofs off after the hard day, and Cal advises Kayce that this team is the antidote to all the violence they’ve witnessed.

Kayce visits Thomas in the hospital and admits he always ends up on the wrong side of the fence. Mo points out he did great work with the marshals and truly helped Jim get his family back. Kayce confesses that it felt good to kill for someone instead of something.

“The Duttons are all born with a killer instinct, but you’re not a killer, Kayce. You’re a protector,” says Thomas.

Kayce and Tate have a heart-to-heart, and Kayce apologizes for forcing Tate to live like the Duttons have lived for 100 years. Kayce believes the wrong parent died and he’s keeping a grip on this place because it’s all he can offer Tate. John told him there would be a time when Tate would test him. He wants his son to know that East Camp is his home, but not his destiny.

Tate’s worried his dad will hate him if he doesn’t want to stay at East Camp. Kayce reminds him that after losing his parents, his brothers, his SEAL teammates, and Monica, he has survived. But not being close to Tate would end him.

The series premiere ends with Kayce riding to the peaceful spot Monica selected for him to speak with her after she died. He calls her his only friend, admits he’s lost, and claims the best part of him died with her.

He’s going to find a new beginning for him and Tate. As he’s leaving, he spots the wolf. This time he pulls the trigger. (And that’s the only part of this episode that, as a Yellowstone fan, I disliked.)
