‘Survive the Raft’ Social Experiment Gets the Go Ahead at Discovery Channel

Discovery Channel’s moving forward on Survive the Raft, a nine-episode series described as a social experiment set at sea. Nate Boyer, former NFL player and US Army Green Beret, is on board to host the series which is targeting a July 2023 launch on Discovery Channel and Max (the new name for HBO Max).

Survive the Raft is inspired by Santiago Genovés’ behavioral study from 1973. The Mexican anthropologist studied how strangers react when forced to work together during a 101-day voyage.

Per Discovery Channel: “Produced near Panama’s Pearl Islands, Survive the Raft follows nine diverse contestants who set sail on the Acali II for twenty-one days to test whether personal interest will sabotage the team’s chance to win a fortune together. The stakes are high: with each successful mission, the team earns money towards a communal cash pot that will be divided equally by those who make it to the end.

Every week, participants are tasked with completing physical and intellectual challenges designed to disrupt and divide the group. At the end of each episode, the crew of the Acali II are given the option to continue as a group or swap one of their own for a new participant. Will the good for all outweigh the good for one?”

The one-minute teaser features Oscar nominee Colin Farrell, once again unrecognizable as he reprises his role as Oz Cobb / The Penguin from writer/director Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

The eight-episode series is expected to premiere on Max (the new name of HBO Max) in 2024.

Joining Colin Farrell in the series are Cristin Milioti (Made for Love) as Carmine Falcone’s daughter, Sofia; Clancy Brown (John Wick: Chapter 4) as Salvatore Maroni; and Michael Zegen (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Carmine’s son, Alberto. The cast also includes Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Deirdre O’Connell.

Lauren LeFranc (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) serves as writer, showrunner, and executive produces along with Colin Farrell, Dylan Clark, Daniel Pipski, Bill Carraro, and Matt Reeves through his 6th & Idaho production company. Two-time Emmy nominee Craig Zobel (Mare of Easttown) executive produces and directs the first three episodes.

The Batman starring Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, and Jeffrey Wright opened in theaters on March 2, 2022. The PG-13-rated superhero film earned three Oscar nominations – Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Sound, and Best Achievement in Visual Effects.

Wan’s Atomic Monster Productions and Safran’s The Safran Company are producing in association with Warner Bros. Television.

HBO and the newly retitled HBO Max – now simply going by Max – are diving back into the world of wizards and muggles with the first-ever Harry Potter series. HBO also confirmed they’re moving forward on the Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.

The Harry Potter series, which is expected to run for seven seasons, is described as a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s bestselling book series, with Rowling involved as an executive producer of the Max Original series. “Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation, which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series,” stated Rowling.

Per Max: “The stories from each of Rowling’s Harry Potter books will become a decade-long series produced with the same epic craft, love, and care this global franchise is known for. The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail, much-loved characters, and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over twenty-five years. Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic, and beloved films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”

Harry Potter franchise veteran David Heyman is involved in talks to executive produce. Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts are on board as executive producers.

“We are delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way,” said Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO & Max Content. “Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon, and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World. In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and J.K. Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years.”

The second Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, has George R.R. Martin confirmed as writer and executive producer. Ryan Condal, Vince Gerardis, and writer Ira Parker are also attached as executive producers.

HBO offered this description of the prequel:

“A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

‘The Great’ Season 3 Trailer: Catherine and Peter Try to Reconcile

Catherine and Peter attempt to figure out a way to move forward after the events of season two in the trailer for Hulu’s The Great season three. Can Catherine actually put into effect changes that will improve the lives of the peasants? Will Catherine and Peter ever be able to trust each other? Since The Great‘s only very loosely based on actual events, we’ll have to wait until season three arrives for the answers to those questions.

Elle Fanning stars as Catherine and Nicholas Hoult returns as Peter. The cast also includes Phoebe Fox as Marial, Sacha Dhawan as Count Orlo, Belinda Bromilow as Aunt Elizabeth, and Adam Godley as Archie. Gwilym Lee plays Grigor Dymov, Charity Wakefield is Georgina, Douglas Hodge is General Velementov, and Bayo Gbadamosi plays Arkady.

Tony McNamara created the critically acclaimed, award-winning dramedy and serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Marian Macgowan, Mark Winemaker, Echo Lake’s Brittany Kahan Ward, Doug Mankoff, and Andrew Spaulding, as well as Thruline’s Ron West and Josh Kesselman also executive produce.

Season three premieres on May 12, 2023 with the release of all 10 episodes.

The Season 3 Plot:

Season three of The Great sees Catherine (Elle Fanning) and Peter (Nicholas Hoult) attempt to make their marriage work after some seemingly insurmountable problems. Peter witnessed his own attempted murder at Catherine’s hands and she also imprisoned all of his friends. On top of this, Peter is at a loose end playing First Husband to Catherine’s reign, so he busies himself with fathering, hunting and salty culinary ventures. But they’re not enough to keep him contented as visions of his late father (played by Jason Isaacs), get in his head about his failures as Peter the Great’s son.

Catherine the Great starts making a name for herself beyond her borders and inspired by a visit from the US ambassador, sets up a conference where peasants, nobles and merchants can all give their input on developing a new Russia. She learns that even the best political leaders sometimes need to make compromises in order to progress.
