‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Review

Ant-Man and the Quantumania

Marvel’s tiniest hero is back, along with his family, to take on the next major villain in the MCU in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The third Ant-Man film, opening on February 17, 2023, is the first movie in Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and follows Ant-Man (2015) and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018).

Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) is enjoying life, loving his superhero celebrity status, and happy when people come up asking to take a photo with him. His autobiography recalling his adventures teaming up with The Avengers is number one on the bestseller list, and he’s still with the love of his life – Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly).

The only real worry he has is over his daughter, Cassie (Kathryn Newton). She’s determined to follow in his footsteps and try to help people. Scott’s worries prove valid when he learns that Cassie has been working with Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) on a satellite to send a signal to the Quantum Realm.

It seems Cassie has been fascinated by the idea of the Quantum Realm after hearing about her dad and Hope rescuing Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) from imprisonment there. Janet hears what Hank and Cassie are up to and as Cassie’s activating the device, she orders her to shut it down right away…but it’s too late. The device rises into the air, blue lights glow, and then, BOOM!, the device creates a powerful suction effect and pulls Janet, Hank, and Cassie into it.

Hope and Scott realize what’s happening and react by letting go of what they were holding on to. They allow themselves to be pulled into the Quantum Realm as well.

Janet, Hank, and Hope quickly find each other, and Janet takes the lead since she was trapped in the Quantum Realm for 30 years. She knows her way around and who to talk to to find help. Hank and Hope are amazed to find that the Quantum Realm isn’t some barren wasteland but a colorful, vast cosmos, like a never-ending Star Wars cantina full of all kinds of creatures.

Cassie and Scott wind up together but are separated from the others. And, of course, they’re equally amazed by the Quantum Realm. They’re quickly taken captive by a group of native rebels who want to know who – and what – they are.

Meanwhile, Janet leads Hank and Hope to see an old friend of hers named Lord Krylar (Bill Murray), hoping he’ll have a lead on where Scott and Cassie landed. However, it’s not long before Janet tells Hank and Hope that there’s someone truly terrible ruling the Quantum Realm named Kang who she has a complicated history with and who will be hunting for her now that she’s back.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is a loud, uneven, and tedious superhero adventure film with an A-list cast who deserve better, as do the fans. The film suffers from using far too much CGI, which is unimpressive this time out. It also never finds its rhythm.

Paul Rudd’s the best part of the film as Scott Lang, the affable ex-crook who now enjoys being thought of as a hero and just wants to make up for the time he lost with his daughter. Rudd has made this character his own and it’s impossible to imagine anyone else portraying him.

Kathryn Newton is a great addition to the cast as Cassie, Scott’s teenage daughter who admires him and wants to follow in his footsteps to help those in need. She’s also extremely smart, like Hank Pym, and reckless, like her father, which has brought about the family’s new dangerous adventure. Newton and Rudd click on screen and have solid father/daughter chemistry.

Sadly, Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas are wasted in the film, as they basically take a backseat and watch, question, and follow Michelle Pfeiffer’s Janet as she guides them through the realm. It’s a crime that these two incredibly talented actors from the first two films are given so little screen time and are demoted to secondary, supportive roles. It was the chemistry and humor between Douglas, Lilly, and Rudd that made the first film so enjoyable.

Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror – the new major villain in the MCU – is both menacing and strangely sulky. Unfortunately, Majors’s Kang comes across as a villain that belongs in a Marvel film like Thor rather than Ant-Man. He’s a brooding, one-dimensional bad guy.

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is a blown opportunity to kick off Phase Five with a bang. Instead, it’s an uninspired, forgettable superhero film that can – and should – be missed.

‘Shadow and Bone’ Season 2 Preview: Trailer, Plot, Cast, and Photos

Netflix’s nearly three-minute trailer for Shadow and Bone season two opens with the revelation that General Kirigan has created an army out of shadows and has plunged the country into darkness. It’s going to take everything Alina Starkov and Mal Oretsev have to emerge victorious against Kirigan and his unkillable army.

Author Leigh Bardugo told Netflix’s Tudum this new season differs from her trilogy. “We are going to get to see some incredible new characters,” explained Bardugo. “We’re going to see characters interacting with each other, questing with each other, fighting and laughing with each other, who we never got to see together in the books — and I think that’s a unique thing about this show.”

“We’ve […]really dug into more of the mythology this season in terms of the amplifiers, but also the creator of the amplifiers, Morozova — who he was, what his backstory is, and how he ties into this world,” stated co-showrunner and executive producer Daegan Fryklind.

Returning cast members include Ben Barnes as General Kirigan, Jessie Mei Li as Alina Starkov, Archie Renaux as Malyen Oretsev, Freddy Carter as Kaz Brekker, Amita Suman as Inej Ghafa, and Kit Young as Jesper Fahey. In addition, returning cast members Danielle Galligan as Nina Zenik, Daisy Head as Genya Safin), and Calahan Skogman as Matthias Helvar) have been promoted to series regulars.

And four new series regulars have joined the fantasy adventure series for season two. Anna Leong Brophy plays Tamar Kir-Bataar, Patrick Gibson plays Nikolai Lantsov, Jack Wolfe is Wylan Hendriks, and Lewis Tan is Tolya Yul-Bataar.

The series is based on Bardugo’s popular Grishaverse books, with Bardugo involved as an executive producer. Eric Heisserer and Daegan Fryklind are the writers and co-showrunners, and also serve as executive producers along with Shelley Meals, Loom Studios’ Pouya Shahbazian, and 21 Laps Entertainment’s Shawn Levy, Josh Barry, Dan Levine, and Dan Cohen.

The eight-episode second season premieres on Netflix on March 16, 2023.

The Plot, Courtesy of Netflix:

Alina Starkov is on the run. A beacon of hope to some and a suspected traitor to others, she’s determined to bring down the Shadow Fold and save Ravka from ruin. But General Kirigan has returned to finish what he started. Backed by a terrifying new army of seemingly indestructible shadow monsters and fearsome new Grisha recruits, Kirigan is more dangerous than ever. To stand a fighting chance against him, Alina and Mal rally their own powerful new allies and begin a continent-spanning journey to find two mythical creatures that will amplify her powers.

Back in Ketterdam, the Crows must forge new alliances as they contend with old rivals and even older grudges that threaten not only their place in the Barrel but their very lives. When a chance at a deadly heist comes their way, the Crows will once again find themselves on a collision course with the legendary Sun Summoner.

Shadow and Bone returns for a second season of new friendships, new romance, bigger battles, epic adventures — and a shocking family secret that could shatter everything.

Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar lead the cast as Samantha and Jay, the living residents of the mansion. Playing the mansion’s resident ghosts are Brandon Scott Jones as Isaac, Richie Moriarty as Pete, Danielle Pinnock as Alberta, and Asher Grodman as Trevor. Román Zaragoza stars as Sasappis, Sheila Carrasco plays Flower, Rebecca Wisocky is Hetty, and Devan Chandler Long plays Thorfinn.

Flula Borg (The Suicide Squad) guest stars as Soren, the husband of a former journalism schoolmate of Sam’s.

The Plot:

Ghosts is a single-camera comedy about Samantha and Jay, a cheerful freelance journalist and up-and-coming chef from the city, respectively, who threw both caution and money to the wind when they decide to convert a huge rundown country estate they inherited into a bed & breakfast – only to find it was inhabited by the many spirits of deceased residents who now call it home.

The departed souls are a close-knit, eclectic group that includes a saucy Prohibition-era lounge singer (Pinnock); a pompous 18th-century militiaman (Jones); a ‘60s hippie fond of hallucinogens (Carrasco); an overly upbeat ‘80s scout troop leader (Moriarty); a cod-obsessed Viking explorer from 1009 (Devon Chandler Long); a slick ‘90s finance bro (Grodman); a sarcastic and witty native from the 16th-century (Zaragoza); and a society woman and wife of a 19th-century robber baron who is Samantha’s ancestor (isocky), to name a few.

The opening of the B&B is a source of intrigue, anxiety, and curiosity among the spirits, but they’ll gladly put up with the commotion as long as they can continue to interact with a living inhabitant – Samantha.

Jenna Ortega and Travis Kelce to Make Their SNL Hosting Debuts

SNL Jenna Ortega and Travis Kelce

Travis Kelce isn’t going to Disneyland with Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes. Instead, the Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs tight end will head to New York to host NBC’s Saturday Night Live.

Apparently Travis Kelce, whose Chiefs pulled off a close Super Bowl win against his brother Jason’s Philadelphia Eagles, has wanted to try his hand at hosting SNL. In September 2022 he tweeted, “SNL?!? Would be a dream come true!” in response to cast member Heidi Gardner saying she’d like him or Mahomes to host.

Kelce will make his hosting debut with the March 4, 2023 episode. Kelsea Ballerini’s also making her SNL debut as musical guest. Ballerini just released her “Rolling Up the Welcome Mat” EP and will be heading out on the North American leg of her “Heartfirst” tour on March 6th.

Wednesday star Jenna Ortega is also handling the hosting gig for the first time with the March 11th episode. Wednesday was recently renewed by Netflix for season two, and Ortega’s also got Scream VI opening in theaters on March 10th.

Ortega will be joined by The 1975 as musical guest, marking the band’s second time on the SNL stage. The 1975’s currently touring in support of their album Being Funny in a Foreign Language.

SNL previously announced Woody Harrelson will be hosting the February 25th episode with Jack White as musical guest. It will be Harrelson’s fifth time as host and White’s fourth solo appearance as musical guest.

And for those who missed it or just want to relive one of SNL‘s best skits in recent years, here’s Pedro Pascal struggling to stay in character during the “Lisa from Temecula” bit from the February 4th episode.

‘Love & Death’ Teaser Trailer: Elizabeth Olsen is a Real Killer

Elizabeth Olsen propositions Jesse Plemons in the first teaser trailer for HBO Max’s Love & Death. The seven-episode limited series is based on the true story of Candy Montgomery who was accused of picking up an axe and giving her friend 41 whacks.

Candy was arrested for the vicious murder of Betty Gore, the wife of her lover, in June 1980. Jesse Plemons plays Candy’s lover, Allan Gore, and Lily Rabe stars as Betty. Patrick Fugit is Candy’s husband, Pat. The cast also includes Krysten Ritter, Tom Pelphrey, Keir Gilchrist, and Elizabeth Marvel.

HBO Max has set an April 27, 2023 premiere date, with new episodes arriving on Thursdays.

The limited series is inspired by Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs by John Bloom and Jim Atkinson, as well as Texas Monthly articles. David E. Kelley writes and Lesli Linka Glatter directs. Matthew Tinker, Michael Klick, Helen Verno, Linka Glatter, and David E. Kelley (through his David E. Kelley Productions) serve as executive producers. Additional executive producers include Blossom Films’ Nicole Kidman and Per Saari along with Texas Monthly‘s Scott Brown and Megan Creydt.

The story of Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore was previously told in the 1990 television movie A Killing in a Small Town starring Barbara Hershey as Candy. And Jessica Biel slipped into the accused axe-murderer’s shoes for Hulu’s 2022 limited series Candy.
