‘Infinity Pool’ Review (2023 Sundance Film Festival)

As with any Cronenberg (David or Brandon) movie, you must be in a particular mood for Infinity Pool. A viewer can’t nonchalantly wander into a Cronenberg film. It needs to be experienced. And love it or hate it, Infinity Pool commands your attention.

Writer/director Brandon Cronenberg begins Infinity Pool innocently enough. James (Alexander Skarsgard) is an author struggling to overcome writer’s block, worried he’s simply not talented enough to pen another book. Fortunately, money isn’t an issue as his wife, Em (Cleopatra Coleman), comes from a wealthy family. Her dad’s a book publisher and warned her not to marry a writer. Because her father’s a monster, she ignored his advice.

James and Em are vacationing at a gorgeous resort on a fictitious isolated island when Gabi (Mia Goth) introduces chaos into their lives. Gabi fangirls over James, claiming to love his novel (released six years prior). That ego-stroking leads to James and Em agreeing to an excursion with Gabi and Alban (Jalil Lespert) outside the safety of the gated resort. Barb wire tops its fence, warning its impoverished neighbors not to dare sully the resort’s idyllic façade.

The two couples take a relaxing drive to a pristine, secluded beach. There’s talk of cannibalism and laughter at the thought of eating James. In just a matter of hours, Gabi and Albin have wormed their way into James and Em’s lives. Gabi even makes a power move of masturbating James; he’s stunned by the act but doesn’t tell her to stop.

Alcohol is consumed and James believes he’s the only one sober enough to drive home. That is his second of what will be a lengthy string of disastrous decisions, the first being breaking the rules and leaving the resort’s grounds.

The car’s headlights go out and James becomes distracted. He makes a tragic mistake the consequences of which take him on a horrifying dive into the world of clones.

Although the area outside the resort is poverty-stricken, they have the technology to make doubles of wealthy tourists who’ve gotten themselves into trouble with the law. For a hefty sum of cash, a double – who shares the guilty person’s memories as well as his/her physical attributes – can take the punishment. And on this island, punishment is nearly always death.

Understandably, Em wants to leave as soon as they’re allowed to return to the resort. But James needs to understand what happened. He’s welcomed into an exclusive club of other tourists who’ve experienced being doubled…a club that includes Gabi and Alban.

Infinity Pool Review
A scene from ‘Infinity Pool (Photo Courtesy of Sundance Institute)

A dangerous, horrifying, and absurd game ensues among those who’ve tested the waters at least once. This knowledge gives them the freedom to live out their most grotesque dreams, and this hedonistic group feasts on the fact money can buy their way out of any crime.

Cult-like behavior follows, and Cronenberg tosses in a graphic orgy because he can. James, a regular guy as the film began, loses all touch with his humanity.

Cronenberg’s assembled an incredible cast to bring this gruesome horror story to life. Skarsgard continues to score big by taking chances, and Mia Goth’s mesmerizing as both his muse and his tormentor.

Extreme closeups and hallucinatory images are used to hypnotize the audience and pull us into this twisted, nightmare world. Terrifying masks hide and then blend in with the actors’ faces. Diving into Brandon Cronenberg’s shocking, gore-infused sci-fi horror film isn’t a pleasurable experience, but it is weirdly engrossing.

Infinity Pool isn’t an easy watch, but it is an undefinable, unique experience meant to spark conversation. There came a point in Infinity Pool, as often happens in a Cronenberg production, where I wasn’t sure I was interpreting the filmmaker’s intentions correctly. That struggle to understand is part of the joy of engaging in a Cronenberg film. If that applies to your taste in films, then just go with it and lap up Infinity Pool.

Infinity Pool screened at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Neon has set a January 27, 2023 limited theatrical release.

‘Polite Society’ Movie Review (2023 Sundance Film Festival)

Polite Society Review
Priya Kansara stars in ‘Polite Society’ (Photo Courtesy of Sundance Institute / Photo by Parisa Taghizadeh)

Ria Khan is “the fury,” or so she repeatedly claims, in Polite Society, an absolutely bonkers action-packed comedy from writer/director Nida Manzoor (We Are Lady Parts). Ria’s a schoolgirl with big dreams and no filter in Manzoor’s wild and crazy feature film directorial debut.

Don’t mess with the Khan sisters or Ria (Priya Kansara) will unleash hell. Or at least she’ll try her damnedest. She’s got her mind set on becoming a stuntwoman, even though her kicks miss more often than they connect. Never mind that her incredibly patient Pakistani parents aren’t supportive of her chosen profession or that her teacher tries to squash her dreams by suggesting she’s more suited to become a doctor. The horror! Nothing will keep Ria from her chosen profession.

Fortunately, her older sister Lena’s got her back. A recent art school dropout, Lena (Ritu Arya) is recruited to film Ria’s promotional videos and help with her training. They’re thick as thieves, and nothing’s going to come between these simpatico siblings – at least not if Ria can help it.

Ria’s also got two BFFs – Clara (Seraphina Beh) and Alba (Ella Bruccoleri) – in her corner who not only provide backup when the school’s resident mean girls rear their ugly heads but also when life at home gets incredibly complicated.

It seems Ria’s losing her wing woman, and that’s not something she can accept lying down. Lena decided there’s no future in art, but there is a future with Salim (Akshay Khanna). Salim’s got the looks, the money, and a successful career as a doctor. And if you can overlook his overbearing mother, Raheela (Nimra Bucha), then he’s pretty much the perfect match. So what if it’s sort of an arranged marriage? These two are wild about each other, and Lena’s all in on love and all done with art.

But Ria’s spidey senses are tingling. She takes an instant dislike to Salim, and she’s certain there’s something wonky about the entire Shah clan. The fact Lena is now wearing cardigans is the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

Ria, with support from Clara and Alba, puts a plan into action that will expose Salim for the fraud she suspects him to be. If that means taking on her new archnemesis Raheela in a kung-fu battle for the ages, then so be it. The Fury is on the case and the only acceptable outcome is vanquishing the Khans.

The Polite Society Ensemble and the Bottom Line

Polite Society is Priya Kansara’s feature film debut, but you’d never know it without googling it. Kansara’s a breath of fresh air, incredibly dynamic, and the camera absolutely loves her. The press notes state that she did many of her own stunts, which makes the fact this is her film debut even more impressive.

Kansara and Ritu Arya (Lila Pitts in The Umbrella Academy) sell that sibling bond; the chemistry’s there and they’re a dynamic duo on screen. The rest of the supporting cast are all outstanding, but it’s Nimra Bucha as Raheela, Ria’s main adversary, who steals scene after scene.

At its heart, Polite Society is a heartwarming story of the special bond between sisters. But there are so many crazy layers wrapped around this sibling love story that it’s super hard to define. Writer/director Manzoor didn’t settle into any genre and instead threw in a wide variety, mixing in kung-fu action, Bollywood dance numbers, romance, a smidgen of sci-fi, and over-the-top comedy. It’s a lot yet never too much.

Manzoor cites Jack Chan films, Bollywood, and The Matrix as influences, and a legitimate comparison would be 2022’s critically acclaimed Everything Everywhere All at Once. Not story-wise, but in Polite Society’s ability to successfully juggle genres without dropping a single ball.

Writer/director Nida Manzoor knocked it out of the park with Polite Society. This entertaining female-driven action comedy is fresh, funny, and fabulous.

GRADE: A-

Running Time: 103 minutes

When his wife, Gemma, gets a job as a school principal in L.A., they move from Michigan with their young son, Grover, unfazed that their new dream home is located in a community quite different from their small town.

Their opinionated next-door neighbor, Calvin Butler, is wary of the newcomers, certain that the Johnsons will disrupt the culture on the block. However, Calvin’s gracious wife, Tina, rolls out the welcome wagon; their chipper younger son, Marty, thinks the Johnsons could be good for the community; and their older son, Malcolm, finds Dave may finally be someone who understands him.

Dave realizes that fitting into their new community is more complex than he expected, but if he can find a way to connect with Calvin, they have an excellent chance of making their new neighborhood their home.
