‘The Couple Next Door’ Season 2 Acquired by Starz

Starz has picked up Channel 4’s The Couple Next Door season two and set a September 19, 2025 premiere date. The first season of the psychological drama starred Outlander‘s Sam Heughan and Poldark‘s Eleanor Tomlinson. Season two features a new cast in a different suburban setting.

The new season stars Annabel Scholey (The Split), Sam Palladio (Nashville), Aggy K. Adams (The Witcher), and Sendhil Ramamurthy (One Piece). Hugh Dennis (Outnumbered) reprises his role as Alan for season two.

“This seductive series instantly struck a chord with women, with particularly strong appeal for our large, engaged base of Outlander viewers,” stated Alison Hoffman, President, STARZ Networks. “High-performing acquisitions like The Couple Next Door play a key role in STARZ’s continued success, expanding our distinctive slate of premium programming for adult audiences.”

“In season two of the steamy drama, viewers pull back the curtain of the cul-de-sac and explore the consequences of turning your fantasies into reality. Brilliant heart surgeon Charlotte Roberts (Scholey) and her husband, consultant anesthetist Jacob (Palladio), take center stage, alongside their mysterious new colleague, Mia (Adams), and Charlotte’s old flame, Leo (Ramamurthy). Leo’s return sparks a change in Charlotte, and Mia seizes the opportunity to work her way into Jacob and Charlotte’s confidence, their street and, eventually, even their bed, befriending cul-de-sac outcast Alan (Dennis), along the way,” reads Starz’s synopsis.

“But it’s not long before Mia’s past comes back to haunt her, leading Charlotte and Jacob to question who she really is, especially when patients at the hospital start mysteriously dying. One thing is clear—giving in to their desires could have deadly consequences.”

The first season, loosely inspired by the Scandi drama Dopamin, was one of Starz’s best-performing acquisitions. The six-episode second season is written by David Allison and directed by Dries Vos. Allison, Vos, Jo McGrath, and Walter Iuzzolino are executive producers. Jennifer Burnet serves as a producer.

‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ Review – A Heartfelt but Fright-Free Farewell

The Conjuring: Last Rites
PATRICK WILSON as Ed Warren and VERA FARMIGA as Lorraine Warren in ‘THE CONJURING: LAST RITES’ (Photo Credit: Giles Keyte © 2025 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc)

Married paranormal investigators and demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren return for one last case in the final The Conjuring film, The Conjuring: Last Rites

Directed by Michael Chaves (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It), The Conjuring: Last Rites opens in 1964 with a pregnant Lorraine (Madison Lawlor) and her husband, Ed (Orion Smith), investigating the haunting of a family-owned shop. Lorraine is drawn to a creepy-looking, full-length, wooden-framed mirror, and when she touches it, an evil entity attacks her and causes her to go into labor. Lorraine and Ed are filled with happiness as they hold their newborn daughter, Judy, following an intense delivery and a brief, deadly scare.

The action then jumps to 1986 and focuses on the Smurl family of Pennsylvania as Heather Smurl (Kila Lord Cassidy) is having her confirmation ceremony at the family church. Later, as part of the celebration, her family gives Heather the same mirror that affected Lorraine years earlier. This sets off strange and violent events in the Smurl home, with a malevolent force attacking the family.

Meanwhile, Ed and Lorraine (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) have retired from paranormal investigating and now spend their time delivering lectures at college campuses, but attendance is dwindling. Their now young adult daughter, Judy (Mia Tomlinson), tries to reassure them that people are interested in their stories from their demon-fighting days.

During Ed’s birthday celebration, Lorraine notices Judy sitting alone in her room looking worried. They talk and Lorraine reminds Judy how to stop seeing ghosts and other disturbing images by reciting a child’s limerick and forcing the images away mentally. “You can stop it,” Lorraine assures Judy. It seems Judy is also clairvoyant, just like her mom.

A short while later, Judy’s boyfriend, Tony Spera (Ben Hardy), asks for their blessing to ask Judy to marry him. Lorraine and a reluctant Ed agree just as Judy walks in, sees the ring on the ping pong table, and realizes what is going on. Before Tony can even propose, she blurts out, “YES!” and the two are engaged.

As the party starts to wind down, the Warrens’ old friend, Father Gordon (Steve Coulter), tells them about a family in Pennsylvania who could use their help. Lorraine quickly shuts him down, saying, “Those days are behind us, Father,” and he leaves.

However, after a tragic incident and Judy feeling a connection to the entity at the Smurl home, Ed and Lorraine realize they must take on one last case to not only save the Smurl family from the demon terrorizing them but Judy as well.

Missing the effective scares and chills that powered the first two Conjuring films into horror blockbusters, The Conjuring: Last Rites is more of an eccentric family drama than a horror film. It has strong performances but lacks any original frights.

Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson deliver strong, touching performances as Lorraine and Ed Warren, who are compelled to return to battling evil forces in order to protect yet another family and their own daughter. They are the emotional core of the film and still exhibit wonderful on-screen chemistry. In fact, the best part of the film is when it focuses on them and Judy preparing for Judy’s wedding day.

Mia Tomlinson delivers a very effective performance as young adult Judy, who is struggling with her clairvoyant powers and is getting a deeper understanding of why her parents spent so much time away from her helping families being terrorized by the supernatural. Tomlinson has solid chemistry with Farmiga as mother and daughter.

The production design is once again excellent, bringing 1986 to life on the screen via period cars, clothes, hairstyles, furniture, toys, and cameras. The audience is sure to feel as if they have traveled back in time.

Unfortunately, what’s missing this time out are the creative and original creepy images, sounds, and scares that were perfectly crafted in the first two films. Not one scary scene is original; rather, the filmmakers recreate scenes from the earlier Conjuring films as well as other classic horror films such as The Omen, The Exorcist, and The Shining. Even the creepy full-length wooden mirror seems inspired by the 2013 horror film Oculus.

Heartfelt but missing spine-chilling fright, The Conjuring: Last Rites is a well-acted and even touching send-off to the Warrens and their spiritual, ghost-hunting world.

‘Outlander: Blood of my Blood’ Episode 6 Recap: “Birthright”

Starz’s Outlander: Blood of my Blood episode six is a pivotal episode in season one, confirming friendships and delivering a beautiful bundle of joy. The following is a detailed recap of the September 5, 2025 episode and there are spoilers ahead. You’ve been warned.

Julia (Hermione Corfield) wakes as her water breaks, caressing her belly and assuring her baby they’ll do this together. She hurries outside and finds Brian (Jamie Roy), who summons the howdie (midwife), but he’s still angry she lied about the father of her unborn child. She confesses she slept with his father, Lord Lovat, only because she knew he would force himself on her anyway.

Julia tries to convince Brian she was already pregnant and believed the only way to save her child was to lie and say Lord Lovat is the father. Brian is unconvinced, and Julia says, “If Ellen was carrying your baby, don’t you think she would do anything to keep him out of harm’s way?”

She insists she loves Henry, and the baby is all she has left of him. Brian seems to have a change of heart and recommends that she ready herself for “confinement.” (Davina explains that confinement is when local women, referred to as “gossips,” come together to help with the birth.)

Davina Porter (Sara Vickers) stokes the fire in Lord Lovat’s room and hears him calling out for Julia in his sleep. A flashback shows her first time being ordered into Lord Lovat’s bed. She was threatened with being cast out if she didn’t obey and was forced to have sex against her will.

Outlander: Blood of my Blood Episode 6 Recap

Lord Lovat (Tony Curran) wakes, disappointed it’s Davina in his bedroom and not Julia. She informs him Julia’s water has broken and that the baby is on its way. Lord Lovat’s confused about Julia’s giving birth so soon and orders Davina to give Julia her best gown. He announces that he’s going to marry Julia so the boy will be his legitimate heir. Davina risks being slapped to let him know the midwife has already been sent for. Julia won’t be able to go to the kirk to marry him before the baby arrives.

Davina speaks with her son, Brian, and asks if there’s something between him and Julia … and if the baby is his. Brian insists there’s nothing going on. He wonders if his father loved her, and Davina sidesteps the question. Brian insists he wants to be worthy of the Fraser name and Davina believes his father will eventually come to understand Brian’s worth. She’s curious as to why her son suddenly cares about titles and wealth and advises him to find a woman who deserves him.

A short while later, Lord Lovat hands Brian a drink and suggests a toast to Simon Fraser. Brian asks how he can please his father, and Lord Lovat doesn’t think Brian’s done anything to raise the family to glory. Brian’s only performed manual labor and done nothing to set himself apart. The seer never saw anything special in Brian’s future.

Lord Lovat insults his son, telling him he’s lucky to have the Fraser name. He’s a lamb when a lion is what’s needed.

The gossips arrive and Julia is shocked when she’s undressed and made to stand in front of them. They pray for her and for her baby to be safely delivered. She’s dressed again and helped onto the bed, with the woman gathering around to support her. Mrs. Hughes (Allison McKenzie) introduces herself as the howdie and checks on Julia’s progress. The gossips laugh thinking about being able to brag that they attended the birth of a future king of Scotland. They believe this is the child of prophecy.

The gossips insist they don’t care that she’s not married, and Davina chimes in, “A royal bastard is still a bastard.” The women compare Julia and Davina’s circumstances, and Davina is enraged. She insists Julia seduced Lord Lovat and tried to seduce her son, Brian. Davina changes the minds of the women gathered to help with the birth, and they are now convinced Julia needs to repent her sins. They’ll still protect the baby, but Julia won’t be included in their prayers.

They call her a disgrace, a jezebel, and the devil’s child. Davina repeats, “Shame,” as Julia sweats and moans in pain. The women begin sobbing and Davina explains they’re mourning the death of her innocence. They continue to demand that she repent and accuse her of having loose morals. Davina is particularly vicious, and the women accuse Julia of sleeping with Brian. She’s asked repeatedly to name the father, and Julia insists it’s Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat.

Finally, Julia’s had enough and warns them they’ll all be sorry when her son is king. She speaks quietly to Davina, begging her not to harden her heart against her and complimenting her on raising a decent man.

A flashback shows Simon forcing himself on Davina while she was pregnant with his child. He refused to believe that the baby is his, despite the fact that Davina was a virgin when he raped her.

The gossips have turned completely against Julia, calling her a witch, saying she’s possessed, and that her baby is evil. They suggest Mrs. Hughes do what she must, and Julia warns her not to hurt her baby.

Julia begs them to help her, screaming for Lord Lovat. Davina asks her one last time to name the father. “Simon Fraser of Lovat!” screams Julia. Davina demands she swear it on the life of the child and Julia resists. She swears it on her life but refuses to swear it on her innocent baby’s life. Julia cries as she tells Davina everything she’s doing is for her baby.

Another flashback confirms the gossips were equally as cruel to Davina when she was giving birth. She cursed them and promised she would do anything to protect her child, even as they called her a witch. Davina ordered the women from the room, prepared to do it all on her own.

Shifting back to current events, Davina tells the gossips to leave. She screams at them to get out while a reverend arrives outside to perform the marriage ceremony. One of the women informs Lord Lovat that Mistress Porter kicked them out, and Lord Lovat isn’t angry. He’s more concerned with the marriage taking place prior to the baby’s birth.

Lord Lovat forces himself into the birthing room and insists they’ll be married before the baby is delivered. Davina orders him to leave and Simon slaps her. Brian reacts quickly to defend his mother and forces Simon from the room.

The reverend refuses to perform the marriage because Julia isn’t in any condition to wed.

Davina helps deliver the healthy baby boy.

Simon has his man, Balloch (Chick Allan), whip Brian with a strap. Brian doesn’t react as the lashes land on his back.

Later, Brian’s in pain when he visits Julia and the baby. He admits he was punished and knows it won’t be the last time he’s whipped. Julia believes the fact that the baby is alive is a miracle. She feels weak without Henry, but her children “light a fire” within her. Julia knows Henry would love their baby boy so much, and Brian tells the baby that Henry will tell him one day himself. He knows Julia’s strong and won’t give up. He also pledges the baby will always have a friend in him.

Brian doesn’t know his birthday and has never celebrated it because of the shame associated with his birth. He thinks his mom’s life is hard because of him, but Julia assures him he’s his mother’s greatest joy.

Julia places a candle on a cake and has Brian blow it out, explaining it’s a custom where she comes from. Brian makes a wish and does as asked.

Outlander: Blood of my Blood Episode 6 Recap
Jeremy Irvine in ‘Outlander: Blood of my Blood’ episode 6 (Photo Credit: Starz)

Henry’s Search for Julia Takes a Devastating Turn

Henry’s patience with his persistent shadow, Arch Bug (Terence Rae), is at its end as he heads out to look for local midwives. Arch warns Henry (Jeremy Irvine) that Isaac Grant wants him to wrap up his search. Only then does Henry explain that the woman he is desperately trying to find is his pregnant wife. She’s due to give birth any day now. Arch is suddenly more understanding of Henry’s search and reveals his own child was stillborn. He thaws and suggests that he’ll speak to Isaac himself about bringing midwives in for questioning.

Later, Arch makes good on his offer and midwives are brought to the castle. Henry asks each of them about recent births and none are aware of a woman who fits Julia’s description. However, he doesn’t give up; he thinks maybe it’s possible Julia hasn’t given birth yet.

It’s been a long day when Henry finally interviews a midwife who brings up Julia’s name when he asks about an Englishwoman. The woman breaks the devastating news that Julia and the baby died in childbirth. She says it happened a week ago, but Henry refuses to believe it. Henry struggles to keep it together and begs to know where Julia and the baby are buried. The midwife says they’re in an unmarked pauper’s grave.

Arch offers him a drink and says the search is over now. It’s time to get back to work.

Arch steps outside and pays the midwife for being so convincing. He claims Isaac Grant came up with the idea of lying so that Henry would concentrate on work.

Henry can’t deal with the reality of the situation and runs to the prostitute who’s been comforting him. In his mind he’s picturing Julia as he kisses her and tells her he loves her. They make love for the first time, all while he believes he’s reunited with his lost wife.

“Oh Julia, as long as I have you and Claire, I can survive anything,” says Henry while lying naked on top of the prostitute. She doesn’t correct him.
