The war is officially on as FX’s Mayans M.C. season four episode eight, directed by Danny Pino, kicks off. A Mayan from the Nevada charter is chased down and killed by three Sons before the opening credits roll.

EZ (JD Pardo) wakes from a dream about Gaby, a dream that summed up the entirety of their relationship in brief clips. As you’ll recall, EZ chose his brother’s freedom over Gaby’s life in episode seven. He sits up in bed, soaked in sweat.

Meanwhile, Angel (Clayton Cardenas) looks like a proud papa as he plays with his baby boy. His bonding time is cut short by Adelita (Carla Baratta) taking the baby to breastfeed. She’s unsuccessful and Angel, who’s been reading Your Baby’s First Years among other books, explains it’s because her oxytocin levels aren’t high enough to continue lactating.

Adelita refuses to give up and keeps saying, “I’m his mother.”

Gilly (Vincent Vargas) welcomes his old commanding officer, Rae, and her son into his one-bedroom home. He’s prepared room for them in his closet and explains he’ll stay on the couch while they figure out their next steps. She wants to give her husband, Paul, some space. Gilly assures them they can stay as long as they want.

EZ shows up at his dad’s now closed-up butcher shop. Neither EZ nor Angel were aware he was shutting the place down, and Felipe (Edward James Olmos) says it’s time to let it go. EZ has realized that he’s not the dog drowning in the Goya painting; he’s the ocean.

EZ confesses Gaby’s buried under dirt and branches. A distraught Felipe asks what he did and EZ replies, “I know who I am now.”

Before turning and walking away, EZ tells his father, “You couldn’t save me.”

Felipe breaks down and slumps to the floor, sobbing.

Marcus gathers the club (Canche’s there as well as reps from other charters) and informs them they need to wipe San Bernardino out. That’s the only way to end the bloodshed. “Send a message to Charming – you come after ours, we’ll bring death to your doorstep,” says Marcus.

Their enemy must be annihilated, and Marcus (Emilio Rivera) fully realizes what he’s asking of his men. He warns them to be careful and gavels the meeting to an end. Not a single member spoke up and the room’s eerily quiet, other than the bang of the gavel.

Yuma, Stockton, and Oakland presidents stick around and suggest Marcus sit this one out. He refuses. Canche announces he’ll ride with Santo Padre. Oakland’s president, Diaz (Alex Fernandez), believes the younger men need to take the lead. It’s their time.

EZ chases down Angel outside the clubhouse and Angel’s having a rough time dealing with Gaby’s murder. He understands why EZ shot her but the situation’s screwed up. He’s sorry EZ had to kill her and brings his little bro in for a hug when it’s apparent he’s also struggling to hold it together.

Elsewhere, a man shows up at the restaurant looking for Emily (Sarah Bolger) and she sneaks out the back without being caught. She makes it to the bus station, purchases a ticket, texts someone, and retrieves her to-go bag from a locker. She steps into a toilet and examines the bag’s contents before pulling up her hood and getting on the bus to Covington, KY.

Jazz tosses her sister, Jess, out of a jeep and screams at her that Terry’s been shot and is struggling to hang on. (He was in the hospital elevator when EZ, Angel, and Manny opened fire.) Jess claims she didn’t know the Mayans had planned an attack and Jazz seems to believe her. Jazz reveals Terry’s club sponsor is back and the guy’s bad news. Even Terry’s terrified of him.

Jazz demands to know what Santo Padre’s planning next and Jess says she doesn’t know. Jazz warns her if she’s lying, she’ll tell Santo Padre what Jess has done.

The Mayans (minus Marcus) make it to San Bernardino and begin to methodically take out Sons. While Sons are being blown away, Marcus is watching his daughter ride a horse.

Creeper (Joseph Raymond Lucero) is seated directly behind a Sons prospect, warning him to stay calm as he forces him to drive his van to the Sons’ clubhouse. Inside the van, EZ, Gilly, Taza, Bishop, Angel, Canche, Manny, and others remain quiet as the prospect passes cigarettes to the Son guarding the gate.

The guy’s not suspicious and the prospect’s able to drive into the clubhouse’s yard. He’s about to scream out a warning when the Mayans bust out of the van and begin shooting. They have the upper hand as they engage in a shootout, and even Nestor the prospect (Gino Venti) blows a Son riding up on a cycle away.

The music’s so loud inside the clubhouse that the Sons don’t realize what’s going down outside. EZ leads the approach to the building, followed by Angel and Manny (Manny Montana). No one inside bothers to glance up at the closed-circuit cameras or else they’d see the slaughter outside.

The Mayans make entry into the clubhouse and take control while outside Bishop (Michael Irby) spots a Son sneaking into the garage. Bishop follows him but the guy gets the jump on him. Bishop’s on the ground, gun pointed at his head when Taza (Raoul Max Trujillo) shoots the Son from behind.

Mayans rip the cuts off of Sons who are either dead or injured.

EZ hears someone in the Sons meeting room and dodges a bullet before shooting the room’s sole occupant. The man’s blood spatters on the reaper painted on the wall. Canche follows EZ into the room and EZ deliberately shoots him in the head, taking out the Yuma president. Only Angel sees what happens. The Reyes brothers stare at each other; no words are exchanged. (EZ’s current M.O. is to shoot anyone who causes him trouble.)

The Mayans return to Santo Padre and EZ takes a seat next to Manny. He apologizes about Canche (of course he doesn’t admit he killed the Yuma president) and Manny says Canche was a good man. He’s taking the death hard and doesn’t really feel like celebrating their attack on Sons. Before Manny walks off, EZ tells him he should become the Yuma VP. Manny doesn’t reply.

Bishop sets a beer in front of Taza but doesn’t thank him. Taza believes Bishop would have done the same for him, but Bishop disagrees. “I would have stood there and watched them put a bullet in your head,” says Bishop.

Taza doesn’t care what Bishop thinks. He knows they’re square now. It’s over and he doesn’t owe Bishop anything.

The music’s shut off and the club quiets when Marcus and the Stockton president, Dondo (Emiliano Torres), arrive. Hank (Frankie Loyal) hands Marcus a Sons cut and Marcus tells the men they lost another good brother today. They toast to Canche.

Adelita holds her head and listens from the bathtub as her baby cries. When he stops, she gets up and discovers Angel’s taking care of their son. She admits she’s exhausted and scared that, because so many horrible things have been done to her, she doesn’t know if she can be a good mom. “I’m a monster, Angel!” says Adelita, sobbing.

Angel believes that although they’re both messed up, their baby is pure. “Now it’s our job to protect that – not let him end up broken like us,” says Angel. However, he loves her but if she leaves again, their baby will stay with him.

Angel and Adelita lay in bed with their boy between them. Angel can’t seem to tear his eyes away from his child.

Kody (Stella Maeve) arrives at the clubhouse and Creeper introduces her around. Bishop jokes Kody’s too good for Creeper and Kody says she likes him.

Gilly falls asleep in his vehicle outside his home, holding his gun and covered by his cut.

Creeper and Kody leave the clubhouse and he’s happy his brothers love her. That means the world to him.

Over in Mexico it’s revealed El Banquero’s sickly mother has passed away. The cartel leader drowns his sorrow in alcohol and jumps into the pool to cry where no one can see him. That evening he finally speaks to his sister, Soledad (Selene Luna), about their mother’s death. He threatens to put a bullet in her head now that their parents are dead.

The old ways are dead and although they wanted his sister to be in charge, he’s decided to declare himself the leader. “I may let you live here amongst all the ghosts, just another oddity locked safely away from public view,” says El Banquero. “But the family business is mine!”

Elsewhere, a woman pulls the hood off a man lying on the floor and we see the prisoner is Miguel (Danny Pino, pulling double duty as the episode’s director). He’s forced into a sitting position as Soledad enters the room and says, “We have things to discuss.”
