FX’s Mayans M.C. season four episode nine – the season’s penultimate episode – begins with Miguel (Danny Pino) staking out Marcus’ home. Miguel thinks he’s being stealthy, but the Mayans are at war and Marcus (Emilio Rivera) isn’t about to let anyone get the drop on him.

Miguel believes that since Marcus abandoned him, at the very least he owes him a few minutes to explain his sudden reappearance in Santo Padre.

Meanwhile, EZ (JD Pardo) and Sofia (Andrea Cortés) are naked in bed as EZ attempts to fill Sofia in on what went down the other night when he returned home covered in blood. Sofia doesn’t want to know everything but EZ believes she deserves to know what she’s getting herself into. Sofia describes herself as the death rattle everyone makes before they die; she’s just a ghost and nothing can touch her.

EZ quotes a poem by Galician poet Rosalia de Castro:

“You know where to find death? In her dark mansion. Tell her to lift my body and soul together to a place where I won’t be remembered, neither in this world or in Heaven.”

Sofia focuses on the gun in her hand and admits the idea of just disappearing sounds beautiful.

Sally’s barking interrupts the couple, and EZ heads outside to confront Jay-Jay (Greg Serano). EZ’s unexpected and unwelcome visitor explains his fellow prisoners were suspicious EZ cut a deal after failing to locate the prison EZ had been moved to. EZ claims that’s because he kept to himself, but Jay-Jay knows the Feds don’t just escort a guy doing 25-to-life out of prison so he can join a motorcycle club.

EZ pulls his gun and holds it inches from Jay-Jay’s face after Jay-Jay asks what the club would do if they knew there was an informant amongst them. However, Jay-Jay’s not there to turn EZ in; he wants a job working for the club and he’ll do anything to make money.

After Jay-Jay leaves, Sofia admits she overheard the conversation and thinks Jay-Jay will be a problem.

Over at the other Reyes brother’s place, Angel (Clayton Cardenas) tells Adelita (Carla Baretta) their boy needs a name. Angel nixes “Angel” or “Ezekiel,” and gives a hell no reply to “Felipe.” Angel tosses out Maverick and suggests their boy can become a badass fighter pilot. That’s a no from Adelita.

Angel glances at a pile of baby things for his and Nails’ deceased baby when Adelita suggests Christopher. It’s also a no to Christopher.

Rae (Erica Luttrell) wakes Gilly (Vincent Vargas), who’s sound asleep in his vehicle, to apologize that Jacob had an accident in bed. Gilly continues to prove he’s a sweet, caring man by helping the boy learn how to make a bed, military-style.

Elsewhere, Emily (Sarah Bolger) has made it to her sister Erin’s house and says goodbye to her son, promising to see him in a week. She reminds him they’re moving and he asks about his dad. They exchange I love yous and after he runs off, a frazzled Emily reminds Erin (Holland Roden) to take the passports and flee tomorrow morning. Although Erin wants her sister to join them, Emily thinks it’s still way too dangerous. She’ll follow in a few days when she’s sure it’s safe.

Erin’s freaking out but Emily reminds her she’s a fierce, strong yet annoying woman who can handle this.

And here comes the episode’s first huge game-changing revelation: Creeper’s new girlfriend Kody (Stella Maeve) is actually an undercover cop named Kate. There are hidden cameras throughout her apartment (including a just-installed camera in her bedroom). Her supervisor’s worried this will be a repeat of Nashville (wonder what happened there?) and asks for a urine test. Kate claims she’s handling everything fine, but her boss reminds her the situation is explosive, referencing recent events in Nevada, UC Davis, and San Bernardino.

Kate’s career is at stake and her boss warns that she needs to get more info from Creeper or she’ll be pulled from this investigation.

Marcus and EZ are alone in a warehouse when Marcus informs EZ he needs to put the past and what happened with Dita Galindo behind him. Marcus has barely finished delivering his warning when Miguel and El Banquero’s sister, Soledad (Selene Luna), arrive.

EZ’s shocked as is Miguel who had no idea EZ was going to attend this meeting. Soledad set up this meeting to suggest a new business arrangement between the cartel and the Mayans, with Miguel explaining the deal would “challenge the belief that brutality and profit need to co-exist.”

Soledad wants to dramatically increase the amount of product sold by the Mayans immediately. To prove she’s serious and has that much product, she has her men remove the covers from the drugs located behind her in the warehouse.

Miguel believes the Mayans can handle this and is ready to become the liaison between the cartel and the club. He’ll work directly with Marcus since they have a long-standing relationship. Marcus agrees to consider the deal and Soledad suggests he do so quickly. As for her brother and the club…El Banquero will be “handled.”

Angel’s gone when Adelita discovers Potter (Ray McKinnon) holding her baby in the bedroom. He refuses to hand over her child and instead places him in the crib. Adelita screams for Potter to leave as he reveals his son still has nightmares after Adelita locked him in a closet and threatened to kill his mom.

Potter describes how Anna Linares is believed to have murdered her husband and then taken her own life. The scene was made to look like a murder-suicide. However, although the couple didn’t have a child, her neighbors reported seeing Anna with a baby.

Potter’s reached the correct conclusion as to how and why Anna really died and he’s going to use this as leverage against Adelita.

Nails (Justina Adorno) graciously agrees to meet with Angel at the clubhouse and it’s obvious she’s devastated over the loss of their baby. Angel takes a seat on the bench and gives her a hug, apologizing for screwing everything up. He’s sorry she went through this alone and apologizes for not being there for her. He blames himself but Nails says it just happened.

Nails is confused as to why Angel wanted to meet and he assures her again he’s sorry and calls himself a piece of sh*t. She lightens the mood a bit by letting him know it didn’t take an in-person meeting for her to know that. Nails turns serious and assures Angel he’s not a horrible person and that he has a beautiful heart.

“That’s why I fell in love with you. And one day the rest of you is going to catch up to that part,” says Nails. “It just makes me sad that I won’t be there to see it.” (Damn this is an incredibly powerful scene.)

Angel’s voice cracks as he apologizes again.

Bishop (Michael Irby) is at a laundromat when he spots Maggie from Marcus’ failed dinner party. He hurries and grabs his stuff, hoping to avoid being seen but it doesn’t work. Maggie follows him outside and apologizes for bringing up her grandchild during dinner. She was unaware his own child died. However, he’s still an a**hole. She didn’t want to attend that dinner but only did so because Diana said Bishop was a decent man.

“You were a sucker punch, punching down on a woman who had the nerve to show up thinking she might have a nice evening with friends and meet a decent guy for once,” says Maggie.

She only followed him out of the laundromat to tell him he sucks. (I think I love this woman!)

Bishop teases her about “grandma business” and ultimately they agree to get together that night for a date.

Santo Padre meets and Marcus reveals he and EZ met with Miguel Galindo and El Banquero’s sister about reopening the drug pipeline. EZ believes this deal could put Santo Padre back on top and will make them untouchable. The club likes that idea but Marcus announces he’s going to say no.

Marcus believes the deal is poison and they don’t need it. Gilly points out Marcus’ decision will leave them vulnerable, but Marcus is determined to end the bloodshed.

Bishop disagrees and calls for the death of all Sons. EZ agrees with Bishop and doesn’t think now is the time to change course. Marcus is certain they need to step back, but Gilly and Hank throw their support behind EZ. Marcus doesn’t care. It’s his decision and the matter is now closed.

Taza (Raoul Max Trujillo) asks for the floor and requests permission to go nomad. Santo Padre no longer feels like home. His brothers believe he’s taking the coward’s way out and Bishop asks if he really believes he can run from what he’s done. Taza holds firm and says it’s time to go.

EZ tells Taza to get out. “If you’re not with us, you’re against us,” says EZ, adding, “I don’t want any brother next to me who doesn’t want to be.”

The decision is ultimately Marcus’ and he allows Taza to go nomad.

Creeper, Angel, and Gilly are the only three brothers who follow Taza outside. They hug him before he rides off.

And just like that, the Santo Padre charter is down another member.

Leticia (Emily Tosta) spends a moment with Coco’s body at the morgue before returning home with her dad’s possessions. She calls out to Hope but she’s not there. Instead, she finds neatly folded laundry on the bed. Leticia opens the box with Coco’s possessions and looks at his bloody cut before handling his sunglasses and thumbing through his wallet. There’s a photo of her as a child in the wallet and Leticia sobs as she holds it, recognizing how much she always meant to her father.

Angel plays with his son and Adelita confesses she has changed her mind – she’s willing to name their baby Maverick. She looked it up and likes the idea that it means a calf who hasn’t been branded. They agree to keep their baby that way. (FYI – the baby actor’s real name is Maverick James.)

Bishop and Maggie go on their first date and although Bishop looks out of place at the bowling alley, they appear to be having a good time. He even laughs for the first time in who knows how long.

Emily’s made it to a nondescript hotel and smokes as she tries to get Erin to pick up her phone. Erin hasn’t replied to her text messages over the past half hour and she’s not answering her phone. The reason becomes clear when a man is seen moving stealthily around Erin’s apartment. We hear Erin’s panicky scream as shots ring out.

EZ rolls up to his trailer and finds the door open. Felipe (Edward James Olmos) is inside and he takes the blame for how EZ turned out. Angel’s more like his mother but Felipe believes EZ is his reflection. Felipe doesn’t understand how EZ could have killed Gaby, and EZ admits he’ll be a monster if he has to to protect the people he loves.

He demands that his father show him his true self that he’s kept hidden. Felipe’s holding a gun and EZ places it to his own forehead while asking to see Ignacio. (Felipe’s real name is Ignacio Cortina.)

Felipe pulls the gun away from his youngest son’s head and EZ seems disappointed in his father’s restraint. Felipe leaves without uttering another word.

Episode nine ends with Creeper (Joseph Raymond Lucero) and Kody eating while lying on her bed. She’s impressed with his culinary skills and he describes how they improvised meals in prison. He also reveals that as a child he used to feed his brother and sister while his addict mom was gone. Kody wonders if he worries about going back to prison as she nervously glances toward the smoke detector/hidden camera.

He starts to talk about drugs and she gestures for him to be quiet. She grabs him and enters the bathroom, immediately turning on the water. Creeper’s understandably confused until she whispers the truth in his ear.
