‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ First Trailer Plus a New Poster and Photos

The weird blue creature gets his own movie with Sonic the Hedgehog opening in theaters on November 8, 2019. (Doesn’t this seem more like a summer-type film?) Hollywood’s delving back into the video game genre – a genre that’s spawned more box office busts than hits – with this and Pokemon, although Pokemon will beat this film to the box office punch by 6+ months.

The new trailer, poster and photos showcase the CGI Sonic both in action and interacting with flesh and blood characters. James Marsden, no stranger to working opposite bizarre CGI animals (Hop), is recruited as Sonic’s wingman and partner in helping to save the Earth. Jim Carrey in full twirling mustache mode plays the film’s major villain, Dr. Robotnik.

The cast also includes Tika Sumpter (The Haves and the Have Nots), Natasha Rothwell (Insecure), Neal McDonough (Project Blue Book), and Adam Pally (The Mindy Project). Ben Schwartz (DuckTales) provides the voice of Sonic.

Sonic the Hedgehog was directed by first-time feature film director Jeff Fowler. Patrick Casey, Josh Miller, and Oren Uziel wrote the screenplay based on a story by Casey and Miller. Neal H. Moritz, Toru Nakahara and Takeshi Ito produced the action comedy. Hajime Satomi, Haruki Satomi, Masanao Maeda, Toby Ascher, Nan Morales, and Tim Miller served as executive producers.

The Plot:

“Sonic the Hedgehog” is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination.”

Jon M. Chu and Nattawut Poonpiriya to Direct Thai Cave Rescue Project

Netflix Thai Cave Rescue Project

Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu and Bad Genius helmer Nattawut “Baz” Poonpiriya will direct a miniseries about the rescue of the 2018 Thai soccer team who were trapped in a cave for two weeks. The project’s set up at Netflix, with the streaming service and SK Global Entertainment obtaining the rights to tell the true story of the team’s rescue from 13 Thumluang Company Limited.

“Like the rest of the world, we were riveted by the news of the Thai cave rescue. With the entire globe watching, this tragic human drama transformed into a beautiful, inspirational story of human beings saving other human beings. Not only did this show the best of the human spirit overcoming even the worst of circumstances, it proved that we are stronger when we work together. Which is why, with the support of the Thai government and our partners at Netflix, SK Global and Starlight, we are honored and grateful to be able to share the full story of this massive, international effort in a unique multilingual format that will allow us to work with filmmakers from all around the world, like the amazingly talented Nattawut ‘Baz’ Poonpiriya, who understand the nuances and details of the local community in which this story unfolds,” said Jon M. Chu.

The story of the 12-member team and their soccer coach trapped in the flooded Tham Luang caves near Chiang Mai, Thailand, in 2018 captured the attention of a worldwide audience.

“This is an opportunity for me as a filmmaker—and also a Thai citizen—to write a Thank you letter to the rest of the world,” stated Poonpiriya.

“We are immensely proud to be able to support the retelling of the incredible story of the Tham Luang cave rescue,” said Erika North, Director of International Originals at Netflix. “The story combines so many unique local and universal themes which connected people from all walks of life, from all around the world. Thailand is a very important country for Netflix and we are looking forward to bringing this inspiring local but globally resonant story of overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds to life, once again, for global audiences.”

“With our partners, SK Global Entertainment is honored to bring to global audiences this story which captivated the world. Celebrating the heroes and survivors of the Thai cave rescue mission is a true privilege, and we are humbled to have succeeded in securing these rights,” said SK Global’s Co-CEO John Penotti.

The Netflix drama will be produced by John Penotti, Jon M. Chu, and Lance Johnson. Starlight Culture Entertainment Group will executive produce.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to thank the people and organizations from Thailand and around the world who came together to perform a true miracle by retelling our story. We look forward to working with all involved parties to ensure our story is told accurately, so that the world can recognise, once again, the heroes that made the rescue operation a success,” said Assistant Coach Ekkapol “Coach Ake” Chantapong, spokesperson of 13 Thumluang Co. Ltd.

“The Tham Luang rescue demonstrated mutual bravery, sacrifice, commitment, and cooperation. By working with Netflix, we will work to give people a deeper look into the events and people that made the whole world stop, watch and cheer in June and July 2018,” said Lt. Gen. Werachon Sukondhapatipak, Spokesperson for the Committee for the Tham Luang Cave Mission, Chiang Rai Province.

‘What Just Happened??! with Fred Savage’ Series Pokes Fun at Aftershows

It was bound to happen at some point, given the overabundance of aftershows. Fox is teaming up with actor/producer Fred Savage for the half-hour comedy, What Just Happened??! with Fred Savage, an aftershow about a fictional series. The network describes the series as a “hybrid comedy/talk show” focusing on The Flare, a television drama that doesn’t actually exist.

Fox has set a June 30, 2019 premiere date. The series will air Sundays at 9:30pm ET/PT.

Fred Savage created What Just Happened??! with Dave Jeser and Matt Silverstein. Savage hosts the show and executive produces with Jeser, Silverstein, David A. Hurwitz, Jen Patton, and Adam Lowitt. Abbey McBride, Edgar Momplaisir, Chase Mitchell, Agathe Panaretos and Sean O’Connor are writing the first season. Jon Cassar (The Orville, 24: Legacy) directs the fake series and Carrie Havel directs the real aftershow.

Emmy nominated actor Fred Savage’s credits include The Princess Bride, The Wonder Years, The Wizard, The Grinder, and Friends from College. Savage has also been keeping busy behind the camera, directing episodes of Modern Family, The Goldbergs, 2 Broke Girls, and The Cool Kids. He’s earned four Directors Guild of America Awards nominations as well as two Golden Globes nominations, a Critics’ Choice nomination, and two Emmy nominations.

The Plot, Courtesy of Fox:

The Flare is based on fictional author TJ Whitford’s sci-fi book series, The Moon is the Sun at Night, which has been a favorite of Savage’s since childhood. The book revolves around a solar event and its effects on Earth – specifically, the small, blue-collar town of Milford, IL – and slowly unfolds into a post-apocalyptic battle for human survival.

The after-show will feature multiple segments, including authentic sit-down celebrity interviews, set visits to The Flare and interviews with the ‘cast,’ as well as discussions with fans and more.”

‘The Society’ Series Debuts a New Trailer and Photos

Netflix has released a new trailer for The Society, a young adult drama coming to the streaming service in May. The new trailer has a Lord of the Flies vibe and introduces a group of teenagers who are frightened and confused to find themselves on their own without any responsible adults around to guide the group.

The series is executive produced by showrunner Chris Keyser and Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man). Season one consists of 10 one-hour episodes and will premiere on Netflix on May 10, 2019.

The Society Plot:

The Society follows a group of teenagers who are mysteriously transported to a facsimile of their wealthy New England town without any trace of their parents. Their newfound freedom will be fun… but it will also be very dangerous. As they struggle to figure out what has happened to them and how to get home, they must establish order and form alliances if they want to survive.”

The Cast and Characters, Courtesy of Netflix:

Kathryn Newton plays “Allie,” who has lived her entire life in the shadow of her more remarkable older sister Cassandra. Whatever Allie’s strengths are, she has very little sense of them. Allie inspires her sister to take charge of the group as they are thrust in to the mysterious new world.

Rachel Keller (Legion, Fargo) plays the role of “Cassandra.” She’s popular and the most impressive amongst her peers, and they all know it. A natural leader, she is the longtime rival of Harry. If she has one person she loves most in the world, it’s her sister, Allie.

Gideon Adlon (Blockers, Mustang) plays “Becca,” who is mature, tough and adventurous, yet always on the outside looking in. She’s the daughter of a single, alcoholic mother and in order to keep the rest of the world at bay, she hides behind her camera, viewing the world with a reporter’s eye.

Jacques Colimon (Duat) plays the role of “Will.” Will is a foster kid and a true orphan. He’s an outsider in West Ham who finds his natural social disadvantages disappearing in New Ham.

Olivia DeJonge (The Visit) has been cast as “Elle.” A dancer, she is brittle from living in the obsessive, cruel world of dance. Her fear and uncertainty in this new world leaves her susceptible and vulnerable to those who don’t have her best interest in mind. She will struggle to find her own self in this dangerous frontier. Whether she finds salvation or, like those to whom evil is done, comes to do evil in return, only time will tell.

Alex Fitzalan (Slenderman) plays “Harry.” The epitome of privilege, he’s handsome, wealthy, ambitious and, in almost every other way, entirely unremarkable. Harry finds himself the leader of the roughly half of the population that would choose to recreate, in the New World, an exact replica of the world they left behind.

Kristine Froseth (Sierra Burgess Is A Loser, Apostle) plays “Kelly,” the Queen Bee of West Ham. She’s smart and has a firm moral compass. But now that the rules have been rewritten, she may well take the opportunity to rewrite herself as well. In doing so, she finds herself torn between the old high school hierarchy and the new world order.

Jose Julian (A Better Life, Shameless) plays tech wiz “Gordie.” Smart and grounded, he proves to be indispensable in the new world. He secretly pines for Cassandra. When he learns about her health issues, he vows to teach himself basic medicine so he’s prepared should crisis strike.

Natasha Liu Bordizzo plays “Helena.” All of her certainty – about her boyfriend Luke, about God – masks her deep-seated uncertainty. More confident in Luke’s ability to lead the town than Luke himself, Helena finds herself stepping into that role in the face of conflict.

Alex MacNicoll (Transparent, Backseat) plays “Luke,” the high school quarterback, and built like one. His girlfriend pushes him to be a leader, but he’s much more content with being a supporter.

Jack Mulhern (Locke & Key) is “Grizz,” a jock with a poetic side. Incredibly smart, he becomes important to the power struggles and game of survival in the new world.

Salena Qureshi (Madam Secretary) plays “Bean.”

Grace Victoria Cox (Heathers, Under the Dome) plays “Lexie.” Quirky and slightly unpredictable, Lexie comes into her own in the political arena of New Ham.

Sean Berdy (Switched at Birth) and Toby Wallace (Romper Stomper) play the roles of “Sam” and “Campbell,” respectively. Sam and Campbell are brothers and cousins to Cassandra and Allie. Sam is sweet, sensitive, and funny. Born deaf, he is painfully aware of the unfair vicissitudes of fate. His brother, Campbell, is a sociopath, insecure and angry at the attention his brother’s “difference” has stolen from him.

The original The Twilight Zone premiered on Oct. 2, 1959 on CBS. The series took viewers to another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound, but of mind. As the godfather of sci-fi series, the show explored humanity’s hopes, despairs, prides and prejudices in metaphoric ways conventional dramas could not.

In 2019 viewers will enter another dimension with Jordan Peele and Simon Kinberg’s modern re-imagining of the classic. CBS All Access’ The Twilight Zone anthology series will bring the original show’s legacy of socially conscious storytelling to modern day audiences, exploring the human condition and holding a lens up to the culture of our times.

‘The 100’ Season 6: Shannon Kook and JR Bourne Interview

The CW’s The 100 introduces two new key characters to the mix with season six. Shannon Kook actually made his debut in the season five finale, but he’ll return in an expanded capacity in the sixth season. Kook plays Monty and Harper’s son, Jordan, who grew up listening to his parents recall the exploits of Clarke, Bellamy, Octavia, and the other survivors.

Teen Wolf‘s JR Bourne joins the cast as a new character named Russell. The 100 hasn’t disclosed much about Russell other than he’s a peaceful, charismatic leader who the survivors will interact with on their new home planet.

Shannon Kook and JR Bourne were teamed up at the 2019 WonderCon to discuss joining the series and what fans of the post-apocalyptic action drama can expect when season six debuts on April 30, 2019.

What can you say about the season premiere?

Shannon Kook: “There’s plenty more to come. I was shocked how far in they went in the first episode. I said, ‘Whoa, they’re doing that?'”

JR Bourne: “But I think that’s indicative, too, to sort of give you a hint of what this season is. I’ve watched the other seasons. I was excited to join the show but it’s a packed season so I think they got us in there quickly in that first episode and they show that there is this beauty and there is this serenity and there is this society that not only looks but is different than anything these guys have encountered in the past five seasons. But it’s not going to be a walk in the park.”

Shannon Kook: “I thought it was going to be a slow build up.”

JR Bourne: “Right? Not at all.”

How do they introduce you into the world of The 100?

Shannon Kook: “Basically, everyone goes into cryosleep because they’re waiting for Earth’s nuclear situation to die down, but that’s not [a spoiler]. Earth dies, so we get sent to another solar system.”

Did you know the show before?

Shannon Kook: “Well, I auditioned for Monty and Finn.”

JR Bourne: “Had you watched the show prior? Had you ever seen it?”

Shannon Kook: “Then when I didn’t get the role, then I fired someone and then I watched the show. Actually, I also knew, I was shooting The Conjuring and staying in the same hotel as Alycia Debnam-Carey and Thomas McDonnell. So when it came out, I wanted to watch them. And I knew Devon Bostick too, so I definitely watched the show.”

Did they give you any tips about working on The 100?

Shannon Kook: “I always ask actors for tips a lot of the time, especially people who’ve been in the business longer than me, but actors are very reluctant to give tips. They tend to not give stuff because they think that they might be condescending or something. But when I got the role, Christopher Larkin e-mailed me. He got my e-mail from someone. I woke up and he’s like, ‘Welcome to the Family,’ Subject. And he’s like, ‘Hey, if you need anything, I just want to say feel free to reach out and I’ll be there for you.’ I was very touched by him welcoming me in. I talked to him a bit about what he’d want for his son to carry through and we discussed a bit of his view on things because I think that would be important to Jordan.”

Will we see more of his little messages?

Shannon Kook: “I guess we’ll have to find out, eh? I don’t know.”

How long before Jordan’s involved in some drama?

Shannon Kook: “I think there’s drama right away for him, being right in there waking everyone up and him trying to put on a good face but there’s so much pressure in that situation. He’s basically responsible for mankind. His parents are a cosmic Adam and Eve. A new solar system, I’m carrying everything they’ve taught me and then learned along the way and I now have to impart it to the team, but the team thinks I’m like a kid to them because they say, ‘Take care of our son.’ I said on the panel, it’s like Shakespeare, is it the fool (who thinks himself to be) wise or is the fool…?”
