‘In the Dark’ Series Preview: Plot Details, Cast Info, and Photos

The CW’s set an April 4, 2019 premiere date for the new dramatic series, In the Dark. The series will air on Thursdays at 9pm ET/PT immediately after Supernatural. The 9pm time slot’s currently occupied by Legacies which will wrap up its first season on Thursday, March 28th.

In the Dark is executive produced by Corinne Kingsbury, Jonathan Collier, Ben Stiller, Jackie Cohn, Nicholas Weinstock, and Michael Showalter. Emily Fox was an executive producer on the pilot episode.

The cast of season one is led by Perry Mattfeld as Murphy Mason. Rich Sommer plays Dean Riley, Brooke Markham is Jess Damon, Casey Diedrick is Max, Keston John is Darnell James, Morgan Krantz is Felix Bell, Thamela Mpumlwana is Tyson Parker, Derek Webster is Hank Mason, and Kathleen York plays Joy Mason.

The Season 1 Plot:

“Murphy is a hard-living, hard-drinking, disaffected twenty-something with a penchant for cigarettes and casual sex. She’s also blind. Murphy lives with her supportive best friend, Jess, and — more reluctantly — her trusty guide dog, Pretzel, whose presence she resents. Her parents, Hank and Joy, own a guide dog school, a venture they opened hoping it would give Murphy a job with some purpose. So far, it’s just another place where she sleeps off her hangovers, much to the particular chagrin of Joy and Felix, the administrator tasked with attempting to keep the unprofitable school going.

Murphy’s closest friend is a sweet teenager named Tyson. Murphy and Tyson became friends after he saved her from a violent mugging, though his kindness and intelligence are currently going to waste as he deals drugs on the street for his older cousin, Darnell.

Murphy’s life comes crashing down when, while out for a walk with Pretzel, she stumbles upon what she’s sure is the lifeless body of Tyson in the alley outside her apartment. But when the police arrive, including a salt-of-the-earth detective named Dean, there is no body to be found — and with Murphy not exactly sober, the police aren’t especially inclined to investigate.

Murphy is devastated, and the only thing holding her back from spiraling downward even further is her resolve to learn what happened to Tyson. With the help of Jess—and Pretzel—Murphy is determined to find the truth, no matter the risk… even if it means she has to sober up a little.”

‘Late Night’ Trailer Debuts Starring Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling

Four-time nominee and two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson (Howards End, Sense and Sensibility) stars as a talk show host on the verge of having her show cancelled in the comedy, Late Night, which just debuted its first trailer. New photos also arrived from the comedy written by Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project, The Office) and directed by Nisha Ganatra (Better Things, Brooklyn Nine-Nine).

Writer/producer Mindy Kaling also stars in the film along with Max Casella (Ray Donovan), Hugh Dancy (Hannibal), John Lithgow (The Crown), Denis O’Hare (American Horror Story), Reid Scott (Veep), and Amy Ryan (The Office, Dan in Real Life). The behind the scenes team includes director of photography Matthew Clark, editors Eleanor Infante and David Rogers, production designer Elizabeth J. Jones, and costume designer Mitchell Travers, with music by Lesley Barber.

Amazon Studios will release Late Night in theaters on June 7, 2019.

The Plot:

“Katherine Newbury (Thompson) is a pioneer and legendary host on the late-night talk-show circuit. When she’s accused of being a “woman who hates women,” she puts affirmative action on the to-do list, and—presto!—Molly (Kaling) is hired as the one woman in Katherine’s all-male writers’ room. But Molly might be too little too late, as the formidable Katherine also faces the reality of low ratings and a network that wants to replace her.

Molly, wanting to prove she’s not simply a diversity hire who’s disrupting the comfort of the brotherhood, is determined to help Katherine by revitalizing her show and career—and possibly effect even bigger change at the same time.

Late Night takes on white privilege, entitlement, and a culture veering toward crassness and conservatism. Challenging the limitations placed on women in power, the film delivers a sophisticated comedy that champions a new order centering the strengths of women and diverse voices.”

‘American Gods’ Season 2: Orlando Jones, Omid Abtahi, and Mousa Kraish Interview

American Gods Season 2
Orlando Jones as Mr. Nancy in ‘American Gods’ season 2 (Photo Credit: Starz)
Season one of Starz’s American Gods finished up in June 2017 and now in March 2019 we’ll finally be able to catch up with Wednesday, Shadow Moon, Laura Moon, Mad Sweeney, and the rest of the interesting ensemble. Season two will also deliver more episodes with three characters who captured the attention of viewers while only appearing in a few episodes. Mr. Nancy (Orlando Jones), Salim (Omid Abtahi), and The Jinn (Mousa Kraish) will each have a much larger presence in the upcoming season.

Teamed up to discuss American Gods season two at the New York Comic Con, Orlando Jones, Omid Abtahi, and Mousa Kraish teased what fans can expect from the new season. Salim and The Jinn will continue their romantic relationship while Mr. Nancy will play a key role as the gods move toward war.

American Gods season two will premiere on March 10, 2019.

What are you excited about for season two?

Mousa Kraish: “I’m excited about Orlando Jones.”

Orlando Jones: “I’m excited about Salim because he’s the only human on the show other than Shadow Moon. The fact that he’s involved with…these are my favorite characters on the show last year – my ship is Sin, Salim and Jinn, I just think they’re the most interesting characters in many ways on the show because they encapsulate many interesting parts. He’s a Jinn who serves a god but isn’t a god himself. And someone who’s madly in love with him and wants to follow him to the ends of the earth. Those themes don’t exist in any other parts of the show.”

Mousa Kraish: “And this isn’t talk. He does consistently come up to us and say, ‘You two are my favorite characters,’ especially now that he’s writing on the show as one of the show writers. He’ll come up and say, ‘I really want to do this,’ or ‘I really want to try this.’ Orlando’s taking us to places that I’m very thankful for because he wants to evolve the relationship that it feels more natural. An audience watching would go, ‘I connect to those two characters because they are the realist thing on the show.’”

Orlando Jones: “That’s true. And what’s so magical to me about that is they’re the Muslim characters. You know, they’re the ones who have the greatest hope about America who are being attacked in a very particular way right now yet still exude such joy, such love, such hope toward the future. I think they’re important in that right. But I think for me if you were actually watching the scene in season one where they’re in the cab, the beauty of it is just the little moments between them when they’re together. You know what I mean? In the elevator…it’s the smallest things.

So, the fight is always, ‘Hey you guys, can we do something with Salim and Jinn? I just want to watch Salim and Jinn because so much of it is what they do as actors. We’re laying a blueprint but it’s really about their work as performers.”

Will we see more of them in season two?

Orlando Jones: “Way more than you saw in season one. I think they’re actually…I think you guys are in every episode except one.”

How would you explain the evolution of that relationship?

Mousa Kraish: “It’s a one-night stand that has been extended.”

Omid Abtahi: “Here’s the thing. Two people can meet and they can have one magical night, right? But to build something that’s meaningful and longer lasting takes compromise. It takes hard work. It takes getting to know each other. That’s kind of the journey of Salim and The Jinn this season.”

Mousa Kraish: “Well, I don’t simplify it as just a one-night stand. But what I’m saying is you meet somebody amazing and you think it’s going to be a one-night stand. It’s like somebody shows up…he shows up at my door and I thought it was over, yet he shows up.”

Orlando Jones: “So what’s going to happen next? They’re the characters that really make you feel something in a really particular way. I’m excited about that aspect of it.”

Mousa Kraish: “Hopefully we’re going to capture more and more of that because to me (Salim) is American Gods because he’s the one character who brings his belief – he’s human, none of us exist without people like that, so he’s what everybody is. He’s our worshiper and he’s mine.”

Orlando Jones: “And he believes in a non-god. He worships a non-god which is fascinating.”

American Gods Season 2

What is it that Salim loves so much about The Jinn?

Mousa Kraish: (Laughing) “I’m sorry but have you seen me?”

Other than the physical attraction, what is it?

Orlando Jones: “I just want to say in a sidebar moment that there were flames involved in an orgasm moment. I don’t know if you’ve ever had flames shoot at you like that. There were flames.”

Omid Abtahi: “I think with Salim the reason he seeks out The Jinn so much is beyond the physical. I think it’s emotional, spiritual and physical. I think he’s freed Salim to be himself. Salim has lived a life of repression. He could not be who he was back in Amman. He can not be that open and he’s taken his identity and said, ‘Be who you want to be.’”

Is it exciting for you to take these fantastical elements and touch on topical things that are happening in real life? To spread a message about repression or whatever elements you might be touching on?

Orlando Jones: “Sure. I think that’s always a tricky dance as a storyteller because the job isn’t to do propaganda and it’s not to poke the bear in that way. I think American Gods has only been two weeks. When season two starts we’re just a few hours past what happened in season one, so you know exactly where you are. Because such a short period of time has passed here, they’re two weeks into a relationship – actually more like a week into a relationship because they met along the way. So, there are things that just naturally come up with being in America in modern times and being Muslim and walking around, let alone being gay. So, what comes with that is what comes with that.

What’s strange is that he’s not a man, he’s a Jinn, and he now has access to a world that he’s starting to understand that he previously didn’t even know existed. But he’s still free in a way that he wasn’t previously free in America. While we say he’s being oppressed in America, that’s not his experience, that’s not his life. You don’t have to script a lot there, right? So much of that is based on how the characters themselves interact in those moments between the words. I think that’s the power of the show.

And, yes, Nancy is probably far more of that type of character where he has a very specific agenda because his use of the narrative is to make you worship and do what he wants you to do. So, he’s far more of that whereas Salim doesn’t have that agenda. The Jinn doesn’t have that agenda, but I certainly do. And Wednesday has an agenda too where he wants to get to this war and he doesn’t care who he has f**k over to get it. It doesn’t much matter to him how that works out, but he’s enjoying the journey the entire time. That’s the fun of it. The gods don’t care what happens to the humans at all, but we’re fallible and mixed up and trying to decide what’s most advantageous to us in this war.”

Does Nancy’s agenda change at all during season two or he always on the same path?

Orlando Jones: “I don’t think we know what his agenda is at this point. I think in season one, if we’re talking about Nancy, I think his agenda has always been born to slavery. Modern-day slavery is not the same as it was. Mass incarceration is a big political issue. Well, that’s modern-day slavery. Human trafficking is, frankly, mostly focused on women and that’s modern-day slavery. His advocacy is probably more around women’s issues, as it were. But he doesn’t see them as women’s issues. He sees them as slavery.

So, not unlike episode 108 where he’s saying, ‘Get yourself a queen,’ the first thing he does is go get Mama-ji. Wednesday went and got Easter. F**k Easter, she doesn’t have any real worship. Mama-ji, that’s Kali, that’s female rage. She should be pretty pissed off right about now. This is who we need. But that’s just exploring the world of the gods and that’s what you’re starting to see and where they’re positioning themselves in the war, what people need to get things done in the war and what the characters are responding to in the midst of it. That’s the next edition of American Gods.

Yeah, it’s fun. It’s crazy fun.”

If you’re busy writing, does that mean Nancy’s less in season two than in season one?

Orlando Jones: “Definitely not. Obviously season one was just two scenes.”

Really? He seemed to have a much larger presence than that.

Orlando Jones: “Yeah, two scenes. The opening scene on the slave ship in 102 and then the opening scene for the shall we say coming to America for Bilquis in 108. And literally they leave there to go and get a queen and the queen they go and get is Easter – Ostara. And she starts the plague.”

Two scenes? That shocks me.

Orlando Jones: “I look at it like Salim and The Jinn. They were in this tiny sliver of season one but had such a huge impact as characters. In season two, they’re in almost every episode. Nancy’s in two scenes. In season two he’s in five episodes, but still far more present than he ever was.

For Ibis, you only saw him as a storyteller in season one. Now you see him interacting in his environment in a way that you haven’t seen him before. Bilquis isn’t just engulfing people. Suddenly you’re starting to see her character evolve. So, really, for all those characters I think that people fell in love with, you’re going to see them in a way that you didn’t see them in season one because you only saw a little. But, we have so much more ground to cover to get there. That’s what I think is really exciting about season two.”

‘The Flash’ Season 5 Episode 15 Recap: “King Shark vs Gorilla Grodd”

“Ladies and gentlemen, we finally have our hands on the metahuman cure,” says Cisco (Carlos Valdes) to Team Flash in an early scene of season five episode 15 of The CW series, The Flash.

Season five episode 15 titled “King Shark vs Gorilla Grodd” begins as Gorilla Grodd growls, puffing out his chest in the middle of Central City and hurdles himself at King Shark as The Flash (Grant Gustin) and XS (Jennifer Parker Kennedy) lie on the ground not moving. Next, the episode goes back in time 12 hours with Cisco telling Team Flash they have the meta-cure. Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) says they need a volunteer to test it on since they all agreed never to force the cure on any unwilling meta. Sherloque (Tom Cavanagh) reminds everyone with all the metas hiding to avoid Cicada it’s not likely they’ll find a willing meta. Barry comes up with the idea to test it on King Shark who’s secure at A.R.G.U.S. Everyone figures the human side of King Shark would be willing.

Joe (Jesse L. Martin) is back and spending some quality time with Cecille (Danielle Nicolet) and Iris (Candice Patton). As they catch up, Joe mentions to Iris he thinks Cicada must have help from someone in order to always avoid getting captured. Iris quickly changes the subject.

At A.R.G.U.S., Barry, Caitlin, Cisco, and Nora meet up and talk to Lyla Michaels (Audrey Marie Anderson) about the possibility of speaking with King Shark about trying the metahuman cure on him. She agrees and takes the team to see Dr. Tanya Lamden (Haley Beauchamp) who’s been working with King Shark. She came up with a new tech device called the telepathic crown which allows her to communicate with King Shark who’s been much more relaxed lately.

King Shark jumps on the dock and Barry asks if he would want to take the meta-cure. King Shark wants to know if they believe it could help him, and Barry says yes. Suddenly, King Shark growls loudly, knocks off the crown, and swims away.

Team Flash take Dr. Lamden back to S.T.A.R. Labs to try to boost the crown’s reach and to track King Shark. While Cisco works to expand the crown’s power Sherloque talks to Dr. Lamden and tells her he believes from her body posture and inflection in her voice there’s more than just a doctor–patient relationship between her and King Shark (aka Shay Lamden). Before the conversation can go any further Team Flash get a lock on King Shark’s location.

Vibe breaches The Flash and XS to the dock as King Shark jumps up onto the dock. XS speeds around him to distract him and places the crown back on his head. Barry tries to talk to King Shark but he grabs Vibe and prepares to take a bite out of him. Barry speeds up and injects King Shark with the meta-cure. King Shark drops Vibe, stumbles backward, and falls into the water. “What’s going on?” asks a concerned Caitlin back at S.T.A.R. Labs listening on the coms.

A very human Shay Lamden (Dan Payne) pulls himself up onto the dock and passes out.

Shay wakes up at S.T.A.R. Labs and Barry brings him up to speed about what happened to him. Caitlin tells him he still has some Dark Matter in a part of his brain so they need to find a way to alter the cure to remove that as well or else he could become King Shark again. Sherloque asks Shay if it’s the man who controls King Shark or the shark. Shay says if he’s asking if he should be held accountable for what he did as King Shark the answer’s yes. Barry whispers to Caitlin to let him know right away when she’s ready to give Shay the altered cure.

Caitlin follows Barry out of the room, asking if he means to ask Shay if he wants to take the cure. Cisco joins them and Cisco and Caitlin both give Barry major grief over him injecting King Shark without his permission. Barry stands his ground saying he did it to save Cisco. Things get heated between the three best friends with Cisco finally asking if Barry thought of doing it on the dock or thought about doing it even earlier. Cisco and Caitlin walk away leaving Barry alone to think about what he did.

Joe and Iris have coffee at Jitters and she tells her dad about her fight with Cicada and how since then she doesn’t feel as though she can go to her office. Joe tells her to come with him. Joe takes Iris to Barry’s CSI office and gives her a boxing lesson, coaching her through her fear of Cicada.

At S.T.A.R. Labs, Cisco’s brooding when Caitlin comes in and reveals she did more tests on Shay and discovered he experienced a severe brain wave disruption in his frontal lobe. That must be the reason he snapped at Team Flash. Caitlin knows it wasn’t the crown that caused the problem. “What caused King Shark to go berserk?” wonders Caitlin. Barry arrives and starts to apologize to both Caitlin and Cisco. Cisco punches Barry and hits him with a Vibe blast as Caitlin walks away holding the crown. Barry speeds Cisco into a pipeline cell and speeds back, looking for Caitlin who he finds standing next to Gorilla Grodd and giving him the crown. “Hello, Flash,” says Grodd through Caitlin who then hits Barry with a cold blast as Grodd escapes.

The next scene is Barry asking Lyla how an 800-pound gorilla happened to get out of A.R.G.U.S. Lyla tells Team Flash it happened during The Enlightenment. For a split second they lost power and that was all Grodd needed to place a psychic command in a guard’s mind to release him when the time’s right.

Caitlin assures Barry she and Cisco are no longer under the control of Grodd and that Killer Frost says she’s sorry for the ice blast. It only happened because Grodd was controlling her. Barry waves it off, accepting the apology. Team Flash realizes with the power for the telepathic crown Grodd could control everyone in Central City.

The team locate Grodd up on a tower and Barry instructs Nora to suit up. He wants her to speed around Grodd as a distraction while he supersonic speed punches him.

Sherloque talks to Tanya and gets her to admit she has fallen for the doppelganger of her dead husband, Shay Lamden. She visits she and they kiss, confirming Sherloque’s assessment.

The Flash and XS take on Grodd and it works out, but not long enough. Just as The Flash is about to take off the crown, Grodd comes to and uses his psychic powers to pin The Flash and Nora to the ground.

Back at S.T.A.R. Labs, the team’s monitoring what’s going on and Shay volunteers to go back to being King Shark to fight Grodd. Caitlin informs him if he does that, he most likely will never be able to be human again. Sherloque and Cisco theorize that a blast from Vibe should be enough to turn Shay back to King Shark. Cisco blasts Shay and yes, it works.

King Shark comes out of a breach, thanks to Cisco, and tells Grodd to leave. And now we’re back to where the episode started. Grodd charges King Shark and the two meta-monsters fight in what has to be some of the best special effects the series has ever done. At one point Grodd puts King Shark on his back and Team Flash realizes that sharks become paralyzed when placed on their backs. A lighting jolt from a speedster should be enough to bring King Shark out of it. The Flash and XS, who are now free from Grodd’s control since he started fighting King Shark, speed up and hit both Grodd and King shark with two lightning bolts. Grodd is uneasy and King Shark knocks him out with a big punch. King Shark puts on the crown and Barry says, “Long live the King.”

Grodd is returned to A.R.G.U.S. and with Caitlin’s help is asleep in a medically-induced coma.

Sherloque talks to Tanya and reminds her love knows no bounds. She can find a way to make it work with King Shark. Tanya thanks Sherloque and hopes he finds what he’s looking for one day.

King Shark returns to his underwater tank at A.R.G.U.S. and talks to Tanya using the crown. He tells her he loves her.

Iris heads back to her office feeling empowered and able to shake the fear she was feeling. She gets a text and exclaims, “King Shark and Gorilla Grodd! I can’t believe I missed that.”

Barry apologizes again to Caitlin and Cisco for what happened earlier, promising not to give the cure to a metahuman without permission. He then suggests they offer the cure to Cicada to take instead of tricking him or forcing him. Both Cisco and Caitlin are surprised by Barry’s suggestion.

The Flash Season 5 Episode 15 Review:

Suspenseful, action-packed, and surprising, season five episode 15 titled “King Shark vs. Gorilla Grodd” brings a much-missed cast member back from medical leave and has some of the best CGI special effects the series has ever achieved. Jesse L. Martin’s return to the show as Joe West is a welcome sight. His presence has been greatly missed. His scenes with Candice as Iris trying to get over her fears of Cicada bring back the heartfelt moments that used to be in almost every episode of The Flash.

The exciting fight scene between King Shark and Gorilla Grodd is truly spectacular. It’s obvious the CGI department has been tweaking and altering the look and sound of both creatures since their debut in seasons one and two, and both have never looked better. The show deserves an Emmy for the groundbreaking work it’s done with special effects.

With Barry willing to try to offer the meta-cure to Cicada instead of taking him down with it in a fight, this most likely will not go the way Barry’s hoping. It seems Barry is just a bit too naïve for his own good.

GRADE: B+
