The Martian star Matt Damon has been chosen to receive the Chairman’s Award at the 2016 Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF). Damon will be presented with the award by his The Martian director Ridley Scott on January 2nd at the Palm Springs Convention Center. Previous winners of the festival’s Chairman Award include Ben Affleck, George Clooney, Richard Gere, Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon.

“Since his breakthrough role in Good Will Hunting, Matt Damon has taken on a series of challenging roles through his career,” said Film Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “In his latest film, The Martian, Damon dazzles yet again as Mark Watney, an astronaut desperately trying to survive on Mars, yet still finding a way to laugh and bring hope to an impossible situation. It is an honor to present Matt Damon with the 2016 Chairman’s Award.”

The 2016 festival will also honor Cate Blanchett, Johnny Depp, Michael Fassbender, Brie Larson, Rooney Mara, Tom McCarthy, Saoirse Ronan and Alicia Vikander for their work in 2015 feature films.

The PSIFF will take place January 1 through 11, 2016.

The Martian Plot:

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return.

‘The 100’ Season Three Extended Trailer

The CW’s released a two and a half minute extended trailer for season three of The 100 that’s going to make it very tough for fans of the series to wait patiently for the new season to premiere on January 21, 2016. Judging solely by the trailer, season three is going to be just as epic as season two.

Created by Jason Rothenberg, the cast includes Eliza Taylor, Isaiah Washington, Ricky Whittle, Bob Morley, and Marie Avgeropoulos.

Discussing her character, Clarke, during the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con, Eliza Taylor shared this bit of info on what fans can expect from season three: “I can definitely guarantee that she’s losing her mind a little bit. We’re starting season three three months after the season finale. So, she’s been on her own for quite some time which I’m really excited to play. It’s going to get weird. It was very un-Clarke-like to just abandon her people like that. So, I don’t know how long it’s going to take for her to go back to them. I hope she does though. I really do.”

Richard Rankin Cast as Roger in ‘Outlander’ Season Two

Starz has just cast a pivotal role in season two and beyond of Outlander. The network took to Twitter to break the news to fans that Scottish actor Richard Rankin will play Roger Wakefield in the second season, which will premiere in Spring 2016.

Roger is described as “intelligent, kindhearted, and charming.” Per Starz: “Roger is the grown-up version of Reverend Wakefield’s adorable adopted son we met in Season One. After his parents died in World War II, Roger was raised by the Reverend (with help from his housekeeper, Mrs. Graham) and is a proud Scot through and through. Now a professor at Oxford, Roger has a keen interest in history and all the secrets and insight it presents.”

Season two is now shooting in Scotland. Season one just received three Golden Globe nominations in the Best Television Series – Drama, Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama, and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television categories.

Rankin, who was born in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, was recently seen in the dramatic film Burnt with Bradley Cooper. His other credits include The Syndicate, The Crimson Field, American Odyssey, and From Darkness.

The Outlander Season Two Plot:

Season Two of Outlander begins as Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) arrive in France, hell-bent on infiltrating the Jacobite rebellion led by Prince Charles Stuart, and stopping the battle of Culloden. With the help of his cousin Jared, a local wine merchant, Jamie and Claire are thrown into the lavish world of French society, where intrigue and parties are abundant, but political gain proves far less fruitful.

Altering the course of history presents challenges that begin to weigh on the very fabric of their relationship. However, armed with the knowledge of what lies ahead, Claire and Jamie must race to prevent a doomed Highland uprising and the extinction of Scottish life as they know it.

KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas Concerts

By Christina Radish

The 26th Annual KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas concerts returned to the Forum in Inglewood, Calif. on December 12th and 13th with two sold-out shows. With KROQ being the biggest alternative rock station in Southern California, and their annual Christmas concerts being one of the biggest shows of the year, the crowd is always very enthusiastic and highly energized, all night long, and this year was no exception.

The radio station’s multi-act bills are always an interesting balance of some of the biggest bands in rock and some of the newest, and it’s a great gauge for how much the past years’ bands have evolved. For example, when first night act Cage the Elephant first appeared on the annual KROQ line-up, they were on toward the beginning of the set and were much more unpolished. Since then, they’ve taken their psychedelic brand of alternative rock to a new level, and with new songs mixed with old, the crowd not only ate up every second of it, but they absolutely loved it.

Following their electric set was Twenty One Pilots, who have been very quickly on the rise over the last year. Their fans were probably the most vocal, singing along with frontman Tyler Joseph on hits like “Tear In My Heart” and “Stressed Out,” while he jumped around from his piano to the drum riser to various platforms.

Also on the first night’s line-up, X Ambassadors, AWOLNATION (joined by Duff McKagan on guitar), Silversun Pickups and Bastille all had stellar sets that proved why they’ve become radio and music fan favorites. The most fun set of the night (and that goes for any bill that they’re on) was Weezer, whose songs are so undeniably catchy that you can’t help but sing and dance along.

Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness (whose previous bands were Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin) and James Bay kicked things off for the second night, with promising sets that really highlighted their singer/songwriter talent and their ability to connect with their audience. Elle King really kicked things up a notch with her sassy brand of rock and soul that contains just the right amount of sexy growl. Her hit single “Ex’s & Oh’s” feels like it’s been played on repeat this year, and yet no one is sick of hearing it.

Local bands The Neighbourhood and Cold War Kids owned the stage and the crowd, and Panic! At The Disco were the showmen they’ve become known for, even tackling the Queen track “Bohemian Rhapsody” with a confidence that not many other bands could.

After a powerful set by Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell, who turned in the only acoustic set of the night and included a poignant version of “Imagine,” which holds so much weight with the current state of the world, Of Monsters and Men took the stage. The Icelandic band has continued to grow as musicians and songwriters, and the possibility of what’s to come next is as exciting as the great songs that they’ve already written.

Much like Weezer did on night #1, Fall Out Boy closed out night #2 with an enthusiastic set of hit after hit after hit. After taking a couple years apart, before reuniting to write together again, the band regrouped and sound as reinvigorated as ever, running back and forth and all around.

Altogether, it was a great two nights of music that will prove a lot to live up to in 2016.

Rooney Mara Wins Palm Springs Film Festival’s Spotlight Award

Carol Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett

Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network) is being recognized for her riveting performance in Carol with the Spotlight Award from the Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF). Mara will be presented the award on January 2, 2016 during the black tie awards gala at the Palm Springs Convention Center. Mara’s co-star Cate Blanchett was previously announced as the winner of Desert Palm Achievement Award for her work in both Carol and Truth.

Additional winners of the 2016 Palm Springs Film Festival awards include Johnny Depp, Michael Fassbender, Brie Larson, Tom McCarthy, Saoirse Ronan, and Alicia Vikander.

“Rooney Mara’s nuanced portrayal of Manhattan shopgirl Therese Belivet opposite Cate Blanchett’s Carol Aird, brings integrity and depth to this story of forbidden love set against the sexual mores of the early 1950s,” stated Film Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “For this brilliant performance, which adds yet another laurel to her diverse career, it is an honor to present Rooney Mara with the 2016 Spotlight Award.”

The Plot of Carol Starring Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett:

Carol, an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price of Salt, follows two women from very different backgrounds – unhappily married Carol (Cate Blanchett) and department store clerk Therese (Rooney Mara), who find themselves in an unexpected love affair in 1950s New York. As conventional norms challenge their undeniable attraction, an honest story emerges to reveal the resilience of the heart in the face of change. Directed by Todd Haynes from a script by Phyllis Nagy, Carol stars Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler, Jake Lacy and Cory Michael Smith.
