Adele Takes on Jimmy Fallon in Box of Lies

Adele’s 25 has set a new opening week record, selling more than 2.4 million copies in just three days. The Grammy-winning singer doesn’t really need to hit the talk shows to promote the album, but she’s been on the promotional circuit anyway including performing on the November 21st episode of Saturday Night Live. On November 23rd she stopped by The Tonight Show to discuss her music and to play one of Fallon’s favorite games: Box of Lies. Adele apparently isn’t the best liar but at least she had fun attempting to stump Fallon while describing what was in her mystery box.

‘Creed’ Movie Review – New Rocky Film is a Knock-Out

Sylvester Stallone Michael B Jordan in Creed

Michael B. Jordan reunites with his Fruitvale Station writer/director Ryan Coogler for Creed, an emotionally satisfying, rousing new addition to the Rocky film franchise. Coogler co-wrote the screenplay with Aaron Covington, taking a tried-and-true formula but then adding in surprisingly fresh elements that make Creed better than Rocky’s sequels as well as a cut above the typical inspirational sports movie fare.

Instead of sending Rocky back into the ring for one final fight, which at 69 would have been ridiculous for Sylvester Stallone to play (but crazier sequel ideas have been floated before by Hollywood), Creed focuses on a rising boxing star and places Rocky at his side as his mentor. Jordan plays Adonis Creed, the illegitimate son of Apollo Creed who’s inherited his father’s skill in the ring. As a child he’s rescued by Apollo’s widow, Mary Anne (Phylicia Rashad), from a life of foster homes and juvenile halls. As a young adult, Adonis goes against his mother’s wishes, gives up his white collar job in California, and moves to Philadelphia to follow his dreams – and follow in his father’s footsteps.

Creed reinvigorates the Rocky franchise while remaining true in both tone and spirit to the original film in a way that’s both engaging and satisfying. The film focuses primarily on the relationship between the wise old veteran of the ring and the up-and-coming young hotshot, but there’s enough room for a romantic relationship between Adonis and a beautiful singer with hearing problems, played wonderfully by Tessa Thompson. Everything about Creed feels genuine including the romantic relationship which plays out with a realistic amount of misunderstandings and make-ups.

Coogler earned the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature for his 2013 independent film, Fruitvale Station, as well as the National Board of Review’s Best Directorial Debut. The film also picked up awards at the Cannes Film Festival and from the Producers Guild of America. Creed might not seem the logical next step for Coogler, however it’s the perfect match of subject and filmmaker. Coogler has taken the right approach to the 40 year-old franchise, perfectly pacing the development of the mentor/student father/son relationship between Stallone’s Rocky and Jordan’s Adonis. It’s not rushed and instead is a gentle build that lends itself to wonderfully nuanced and touching performances by both Jordan and Stallone. In fact, Creed is Stallone’s second best film after Rocky. Immediately after the screening one of my fellow critics made a case for 1997’s Cop Land topping Creed, but I’m sticking with Creed over Cop Land due to the unusual amount of restraint Stallone shows in reprising this character he knows so well.

Coogler not only does a terrific job of establishing the relationship between Rocky and Adonis, he also does an outstanding job with the boxing scenes – not just the big fight you know is coming at the end of the film but also the scenes in the gym in which Rocky uses old-school methods to train Adonis who’s anxious for his big shot at a major fight. Just like the character, the audience is also aching for Adonis to get his opportunity at a big fight. But Coogler skillfully allows the story to evolve, building the tension in such a way that the audience is right there with Adonis in the tunnel as he takes that much anticipated walk to the ring.

Stallone, Jordan, Thompson, and Rashad all deliver first-rate performances in Creed, making this seventh film of the franchise an absolute must-see even for those who can’t recall what happened in any film of the series other than the original Rocky.

‘Ash vs Evil Dead’ Season 1 Episode 4 Recap: Brujo

Ash vs Evil Dead Lucy Lawless Episode 4

The November 21, 2015 episode of Ash vs Evil Dead begins with Amanda Fisher (Jill Marie Jones) handcuffed in the bookstore and the book dealer, turned into a deadite, walking over to kill her. As the deadite gets almost within reach of Amanda, Ruby Knowby (Lucy Lawless) comes in and spears it to the wall. The two women decide to team up and search for Ash (Bruce Campbell), while Ruby reveals that it was her father Professor Knowby’s cabin that Ash originally found the book in. Ruby also unveils her secret weapon: Ash’s possessed hand.

Meanwhile, Ash and his crew – Pablo (Ray Santiago) and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) – are on their way to Pablo’s uncle’s house. On their way there, a cloud of deadites begin to chase them and are repealed at the gate of the Brujo. Inside the compound, Pablo’s uncle decides that Ash needs to go on a spirit walk and gives him iowaska. During Ash’s drug-induced spirit walk, Kelly starts to feel sick and is eventually possessed by the evil spirit from the previous episode. She electrocutes Pablo and then finds Ash in his catatonic state.

While Ash is in his happy place, which happens to be Jacksonville, Florida, Kelly tries to take possession of his mind. Suddenly Ash’s happy place is turned into his nightmare: his job at Value Mart. After getting a pep talk from his pet bearded dragon, Ash begins to take back his mind by choking the demon. Unfortunately, in the real world Ash is choking Kelly and nearly killing her. And the episode ends with Pablo knocking Ash out and with the demon still in possession of Kelly.

This one’s a real no-brainer, isn’t it? Of course FX has renewed the award-winning series Fargo for a third season. The only surprise is that the network didn’t announce this weeks ago. Fargo season two is currently airing on Mondays at 10pm ET/PT with just four episodes left to wrap up the tale of the war between the Kansas City mafia and the Gerhardt family.

Announcing the renewal, FX confirmed series creator Noah Hawley will be back along with executive producers Warren Littlefield, Joel Coen, Ethan Coen, and John Cameron.

“Year two of Fargo is an extraordinary achievement and, given Noah Hawley’s masterful storytelling, we can’t wait to see where the third, all-new version of Fargo takes us,” said Eric Schrier, President of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions. “Our thanks to Noah, Warren, Joel & Ethan, John and our partners at MGM Television for making Fargo such a memorable and rewarding journey.”

Season two ranks as one of the best shows of 2015, scoring a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Season one received three Emmys, two Golden Globes, and a Peabody Award.

The Fargo Season Two Plot:

The second installment of Fargo follows a young State Trooper (Patrick Wilson) and his Sheriff father-in-law (Ted Danson) as they investigate a grisly case involving a local crime family and a major mob syndicate, and a small town beautician (Kirsten Dunst) and her husband (Jesse Plemons) who inadvertently get caught in the middle.

The November 23 episode finds Lou and Hank investigating in Fargo, The King of Breakfast visiting Betsy and Molly, Floyd being summoned away, and Bear questioning a family member’s loyalty.
