‘Killer Elite’ Movie Review

Jason Statham in Killer Elite

“He’s like a father to you, right? You don’t do this, he’s a dead man.” That’s how ex-special ops agent Danny (Jason Statham) is brought out of retirement to try to save his friend and mentor Hunter (Robert De Niro) from certain death at the hands of ruthless, powerful men seeking revenge and retribution in the action movie Killer Elite.

Trusting only two other ex-special ops who are now mercenaries-for-hire, Danny sets out to kill three assassins after taping their confessions of the murders they committed. This puts Danny up against a secret military order, operating under the auspices of British Intelligence, and their leader, a cunning ex-agent named Spike (Clive Owen) who’ll stop at nothing to protect the men he served with.

Covering the globe from the Middle East, Paris, Australia, and London, Danny and his team gather information about their three targets and set traps for them, trying to stay one step ahead of Spike and any other operatives who could stop them.

Based on a true story, Killer Elite is an action-adventure thriller with a solid cast that suffers from a flimsy, uninteresting plot. The writing is weak, with one-dimensional characters that the audience has seen way too many times before. Jason Statham as Danny delivers the same silent, threatening performance he’s done before in other films such as Crank and The Transporter. There is absolutely nothing new here from him on the screen.

Clive Owen is effectively menacing as Spike the ex-agent whose only redeeming value is the loyalty he feels and shows to his ex-comrades in arms. Perhaps the worst thing about the film is the complete waste of a great actor, Robert De Niro, who basically sits most of the action out – with the exception of a brief, failed escape attempt early in the film – waiting to be rescued or released.

Another big problem with the film is the uninspired action scenes featuring shootouts and fistfights which have been choreographed and directed much better in other superior films. There’s no real sense of tension or drama, and the pacing is choppy.

Unoriginal and uneven, Killer Elite is a forgettable action film.

GRADE: D

Killer Elite hits theaters on September 23, 2011 and is rated R for strong violence, language and some sexuality/nudity.

First Look: ‘Premium Rush’ Film Trailer

Premium RushJoseph Gordon-Levitt is easily one of the best – and busiest – young actors in Hollywood, tackling pretty much ever genre and never getting stuck playing the same sort of character twice. On September 30, 2011 he’ll be seen playing a decent guy whose life is thrown out of whack after he’s diagnosed with cancer in 50/50, based on a true story. He’s currently at work on The Dark Knight Rises, and after that wraps up he’ll get busy playing Robert Todd Lincoln in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln. And Gordon-Levitt’s got Premium Rush, an action thriller from writer/director David Koepp, heading to theaters on January 13, 2012.

In Premium Rush, Gordon-Levitt plays a Manhattan bike messenger who accepts a package which leads to a cat-and-mouse chase that could end in his death. Check out the first trailer and see what you think:

The Plot: Dodging speeding cars, crazed cabbies, open doors, and eight million cranky pedestrians is all in a day’s work for Wilee (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), the best of New York’s agile and aggressive bicycle messengers. It takes a special breed to ride the fixie – super lightweight, single-gear bikes with no brakes and riders who are equal part skilled cyclists and suicidal nutcases who risk becoming a smear on the pavement every time they head into traffic.

But a guy who’s used to putting his life on the line is about to get more than even he is used to when a routine delivery turns into a life or death chase through the streets of Manhattan. When Wilee picks up his last envelope of the day on a premium rush run, he discovers this package is different. This time, someone is actually trying to kill him.

In the press release announcing the limited re-release of Ghostbusters, Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures President Rory Bruer stated, “We’re delighted to be bringing Ghostbusters back to the big screen – this is a special celebration of the movie, giving the fans a chance to see it on the big screen in perfect digital presentation. ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’ Trailer #2

The more I see of the English language film version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the higher my hopes become that it will do justice to the Stieg Larsson novel it’s based on. The second trailer lays out the plot and sets up the story’s main characters – Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist and Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander – while also showing off some of the film’s action sequences without giving too much away.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was directed by David Fincher (The Social Network) and hits theaters on December 21, 2011.

The Plot: Within the story’s labyrinth lie murder, corruption, family secrets, and the inner demons of the two unexpected partners chasing the truth of a 40-year-old mystery. Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) is a financial reporter determined to restore his honor after being convicted of libel. Engaged by one of Sweden’s wealthiest industrialists, Henrik Vanger (Academy Award® nominee Christopher Plummer), to get to the bottom of the long-ago disappearance of his beloved niece, Harriet – murdered, Vanger believes, by a member of his large family – the journalist heads to a remote island on the frozen Swedish coast, unaware of what awaits him.

At the same time, Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara), an unusual but ingenious investigator with Milton Security, is hired to do a background check on Blomkvist, a job that ultimately leads to her joining Mikael in his investigation of who killed Harriet Vanger.

Though Lisbeth shields herself from a world that has repeatedly betrayed her, her hacking skills and single-minded focus become invaluable. While Mikael goes face-to-face with the tight-lipped Vangers, Lisbeth plies the wired shadows. They begin to trace a chain of homicides from the past into the present, forging a fragile strand of trust even as they are pulled into the most savage currents of modern crime.
