Review: ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’

Pizza, a security guard, and—most importantly—homicidal robots are key elements of Universal Pictures and Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s, based on the popular video game.

Five Nights focuses on Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson), a former mall security guard who was recently fired for beating up the father of a little boy who he mistakenly thought was a stranger trying to kidnap the child. Mike can’t really be faulted; he’s haunted by the memory of witnessing his little brother being kidnapped when he was 12.

Desperate to find another job to retain custody of his 10-year-old sister Abby (Piper Rubio), Mike reluctantly accepts the job of overnight security guard at the closed, formerly family-friendly restaurant Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. The restaurant was extremely popular in the 1980s (think Chuck E. Cheese) but was shut down after several children went missing and were never found. Mike’s told by the career counselor that all that’s expected of him is to watch the security monitors and make sure no one breaks in.

Mike’s visited on his first night on the job by Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail), a local police officer who takes a quick interest in Mike and has an unusual fondness for the closed pizzeria. One night when Mike can’t get ahold of Abby’s babysitter, he has no choice but to take her with him to work. And, of course, that’s the night that Mike discovers, much to his surprise, that the creepy animatronic animals—Freddy Fazbear, a bow-tie-wearing rabbit named Bonnie, Chica the giant chicken, and Foxy the pirate fox (complete with a hook)—come to life. And these bizarre animals are very interested in Abby.

Vanessa, who’s made it her business to visit Mike every night, reveals that the animatronics are possessed by the ghosts of the missing children. While Abby is delighted to play with her huge new friends, Mike is uneasy and concerned for his little sister’s safety. He doesn’t yet realize that Freddy and his friends are extremely dangerous and have something special planned for him and Abby.

Dark, weird, and disappointingly dull, Five Nights at Freddy’s is a campy horror film that never figures out what it wants to be. The tone’s all over the place, and it lacks any sense of suspense. It’s a slow-paced horror film missing any true terror or chills.

Josh Hutcherson is solid as Mike, the troubled security guard who still blames himself for his little brother’s disappearance and is failing to be a good caregiver to his little sister. But even Hutcherson’s performance isn’t enough to salvage the film.

The animatronics, created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, succeed in capturing the cheesy look of the game and are effective, especially when coming alive and interacting with Abby and Mike. They’re just not quite disturbing enough to be terror-inducing.

The film’s backstory is too dark and disturbing for young kids, and horror fans are sure to be bored out of their minds. Five Nights at Freddy’s might interest fans of the video game, but after sitting through the first 20 minutes, the novelty will wear off and they’ll be wishing they were playing the game instead.

The Plot, Courtesy of NBC:

It’s been nearly 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. Now, a new team, led by physicist Ben Song (Raymond Lee), has been assembled to restart the project in the hope of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it.

Everything changes, however, when Ben makes an unauthorized leap into the past, leaving the team behind to solve the mystery of why he did it. At Ben’s side throughout his leaps is Addison (Bassett), who appears in the form of a hologram only Ben can see and hear. She’s a decorated Army veteran who brings level-headed precision to her job.

At the helm of the highly confidential operation is Herbert “Magic” Williams (Hudson), a no-nonsense career military man who has to answer to his bosses who won’t be happy once they learn about the breach of protocol. The Music of ‘The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes’

Director Francis Lawrence says that early on in the process of bringing The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes to life he spoke with author Suzanne Collins about the music. Collins told him music’s an important element to this prequel and that the songs were inspired by Scottish, English, and Irish ballads. Lionsgate’s new behind the scenes featurette focuses on the music and features never-before-released clips from the film, including scenes of Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler) performing on stage.

The new video also includes interviews with Lawrence, producer Nina Jacobson, and executive music producer Dave Cobb who worked closely with author Collins to capture her vision.

In addition to Rachel Zegler, the cast includes Tom Blyth as Coriolanus Snow, Oscar winner Viola Davis as Head Gamemaker Volumnia Gaul, Peter Dinklage as Dean Cesca Highbottom, Jason Schwartzman as Lucky Flickerman, Josh Andrés Rivera as Sejanus Plinth, and Hunter Schafer as Tigris Snow. Jerome Lance is Marcus, tribute from District 2; Ashley Liao is Clemensia Dovecote, one of Coriolanus’s closest friends and mentor to a tribute from District 11; Knox Gibson plays Bobbin, tribute from District 8; Mackenzie Lansing is Coral, tribute from District 4; and Aamer Husain plays Felix Ravinstill, mentor to a tribute from District 11.

Fionnula Flanagan plays Grandma’am, Coriolanus’s strict grandmother; Isobel Jesper Jones plays Mayfair Lipp, daughter of the mayor of District 12; Flora Li Thiemann is Livia Cardew, mentor to a tribute from District 1; and Burn Gorman is Commander Hoff, Scott Folan is Beanpole, and Carl Spencer is Smiley, Peacekeepers sent by the Capitol to District 12.

Honor Gillies, Eike Onyambu, and Konstantin Taffet play members of the Covey, a group of nomads in District 12. Michael Greco and Daniela Grubert are Strabo Plinth and Mrs. Plinth, wealthy parents to Sejanus Plinth.

The Hunger Games The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes Soundtrack

Both the film and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (Music From & Inspired By) soundtrack will be released on November 17, 2023.

“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes follows a young Coriolanus (Blyth) who is the last hope for his failing lineage, the once-proud Snow family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With his livelihood threatened, Snow is reluctantly assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Zegler), a tribute from the impoverished District 12. But after Lucy Gray’s charm captivates the audience of Panem, Snow sees an opportunity to shift their fates,” reads Lionsgate’s official synopsis. “With everything he has worked for hanging in the balance, Snow unites with Lucy Gray to turn the odds in their favor. Battling his instincts for both good and evil, Snow sets out on a race against time to survive and reveal if he will ultimately become a songbird or a snake.”

Starz offers this description of the new season:

“Season three picks up where we left off, in Southside Jamaica Queens with the Thomas family in turmoil and reeling from the Mob’s coordinated attack on Raquel, Marvin, and Lou-Lou. After her close call, Raquel is looking to make a fresh start, but Kanan doesn’t trust her or believe it when she says she’s done. Can she really be out of the game? As the trailer claims, the truth is a lie, and Kanan’s been burned before.

Over the last two seasons of Raising Kanan, Kanan Stark has slowly learned the truth about not only his mother, but also himself. It has been a tortuous journey for him and everyone around him. With each new revelation, Kanan has been forced to confront his family’s seemingly never-ending web of secrets and lies. He has spent much of this time in a state of denial, but now, Kanan’s blinders are finally off, and he doesn’t like what he sees.

In season three, Kanan finds himself grappling with the very notions of right and wrong. Good and evil. Fidelity and disloyalty. And he’s not alone. Every member of the Thomas family must confront an existential crisis that challenges their very identity. Whether it’s Marvin, who’s still trying to redeem himself, or Raq, who’s finally coming clean, or Lou, who’s wrestling with his own evil, or Jukebox, who’s simply trying to break free from her family’s pathology, they are all attempting to redefine and reinvent themselves. They won’t all be able to complete this intensely personal quest, but for those who do, the destination may reveal the most terrifying secret of all.

There is no right and wrong or good and evil. There are no absolutes. In the end, there’s just you.”
