Paramount+’s Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies episode eight opens with breaking news. Teenagers are out of control, what with their big hair, loose morals, and rock n roll music! And now the kids at Rydell want to play the devil’s music at their school dance. The horror!
Tippy St. Clair, the President of Rydell PTA, tells a local reporter that she strongly opposes this dance. However, the Pink Ladies believe change is necessary, while class president Buddy (Jason Schmidt) declines to be interviewed.
The reporter questions whether this could be the end of the world as we know it. As the episode concludes, fans may share those same concerns.
But back to the real business of the day: the dance committee meeting. The Pink Ladies have joined the committee since it’s open to everyone, and Cynthia (Ari Notartomaso) and Dot (Josette Halpert) argue over the dress code. Olivia (Cheyenne Isabel Wells) explains that their goal is to make sure the tickets will be inexpensive and there won’t be a dress code.
Since Buddy’s absent, Susan (Madison Thompson) is the one in charge. She stuns her minions by agreeing with the Pink Ladies. However, the changes will still need to be approved by the principal, boosters, and the PTA. It may be difficult to convince them, especially since it’s coming from the Pink Ladies.
Susan volunteers to present it since she speaks “parent.”
Later, Olivia warns her fellow Pink Ladies not to trust Susan, citing the tale of the scorpion and the frog. You can’t change your nature.
Jane (Marisa Davila) realizes it’s tough to trust Susan but concedes she does get a lot done.
While the Pink Ladies deliberate on the best course of action, Jane is preoccupied with keeping them away from Buddy and Richie (Johnathan Nieves). She finally admits she doesn’t know who to choose – Buddy or Richie. They both insist they’ve changed, but are either telling the truth?
In a nod to Grease, the girls all admit they don’t have dates, and Cynthia suggests Jane should let the boys drag race to be her date. Olivia’s no help and wonders if there’s a third option since she can’t choose either.
A while later at the Frosty Palace, Jane’s made up her mind and breaks the news to Richie. She’s going to the dance with the Pink Ladies. That’s just minutes before Gil (Nicholas McDonough) asks Olivia to be his date. She turns him down, but he doesn’t give up.
Gil pours out his heart and confesses he’s crazy about her and scared she’ll turn him down. Olivia replies, “Seven.” Gil’s confused and she says that’s when he can meet her for the dance.
Wally (Maxwell Whittington-Cooper) fumbles his first request and then follows it up by officially asking Hazel (Shanel Bailey) to the dance. She turns him down, claiming she’s not allowed to date. Wally wonders if they can both attend the dance without it being labeled an actual date. He suggests it’ll just be an experiment to see if she can have fun. Hazel agrees!
Next, Jane delivers the bad news to Buddy. He’s disappointed, and it’s obvious the lies are weighing heavy on him. He’s not his usual All-American Big Man on Campus self.
Nancy (Tricia Fukuhara) grabs Cynthia, drags her into the back of the restaurant, and confesses she has a crush on Potato. Less than 10 minutes in, Nancy has the honor of launching into the episode’s first song. She sings about falling for a guy, and Cynthia picks up the next verse as a spotlight shines on Lydia. Cynthia says she can’t control her emotions and joins Nancy in the chorus, singing about the struggles of having crushes.
The song ends and Nancy marches up to Potato and asks him out. He says he’d love to be her date.
Cynthia hides her true feelings for Lydia and asks Shy Guy to the dance instead.
The Pink Ladies reunite in a booth and Jane explains she turned down both guys. She’s totally shocked to learn her BFFs all have dates.
Outside, Richie spots Dot crying, and she confesses the guy she likes is going to the dance with someone else. He can relate and suggests they go together.
Susan delivers a presentation to the parents while the Pink Ladies observe from outside the gym doors. She kicks off her speech by identifying juvenile delinquency and rock and roll as the biggest threats to Rydell. Susan proposes that hosting a free dance in the gym will keep delinquents off the streets and in a controlled setting. They’ll be forced to conduct themselves under the school’s code of conduct and will be under adult supervision.
Susan’s even invited Channel 8 to cover the dance, confident they’ll find a group of well-behaved teens having a great time.
Susan’s mom, the head of the PTA, insists rock ‘n roll leads to sex and drugs. Buddy’s dad throws his support behind Susan, and Principal Nicholson casts the deciding vote. The dance is on – and the PTA will chaperone.
Everyone’s shocked when Susan and Jane hug and celebrate their win.
It’s the day of the big dance and Olivia, Jane, and Nancy look stunning as they decorate the gym. Cynthia rushes up in a prom dress and demands help putting on makeup. Jane and Nancy help her out while Susan volunteers to help Olivia hang decorations. Olivia is about to turn her down but then spots Mr. Daniels (Chris McNally) and hurries off for a private chat.
Mr. Daniels confesses that he ended his engagement because he has feelings for Olivia. They kiss, and Olivia pulls away – insisting she can’t trust him. He assures her he’s changed, and he invites her to his house after the dance. She turns him down, saying she has a date.
Cameras roll as the teens line up to get into the dance. Hazel’s worried she’s overdressed, but Wally assures her she’s beautiful.
Buddy’s dad preps him for the dance and for being interviewed by Channel 8. Buddy confesses he didn’t tell Jane she won and that they cheated, and his dad tells him to pull himself together. Buddy takes a swig from a bottle before joining his classmates.
The Pink Ladies meet up with their T-Birds dates and it’s awkward but cute. Jane’s the only one without a date and she’s surprised to see Richie’s not flying solo. Just as they start to talk Dot walks up, channeling Sandy from Grease.
“Hey there, stud,” says Dot. She’s dressed to kill, and Jane is stunned to discover Dot is Richie’s date.
Susan’s mom, Tippy, is handling check-in and she refuses the T-Birds and Pink Ladies entry. Tippy claims the PTA just changed the Code of Conduct rules and now individuals with a permanent mark on their record are not allowed to attend.
Olivia’s sure this is Susan’s doing, but Jane doesn’t think so. Dot insists Tippy let Richie in, but Tippy stands firm. Rules are rules after all.
They’re all leaving as Susan notices the commotion at the door and rushes out. Her mom pulls her aside and admits she sent Johnny Vavoom home and that delinquents aren’t allowed at the dance. “Did you ever think that I have to act like this because I know all too well how easily corruptible my own daughter is?” asks Tippy.
Tippy reminds Susan that fun has consequences. She also confirms Susan had an abortion and never told Buddy that he was the father.
Susan heads back to the dance, dejected, while the T-Birds and Pink Ladies sit on the stairs, moping. Olivia can’t believe they helped decorate the gym and aren’t allowed in to have fun. Richie suggests they hold their own dance elsewhere and Nancy agrees they can do it at the Frosty Palace since it always shuts down on dance night.
Meanwhile, the real dance is a dud. Susan’s friends are pissed because the music’s “the pits.” Hardly anyone’s on the dance floor and most people are just sitting around, yawning, and bored to tears.
Buddy’s drunk and his interview with Channel 8 is a disaster. He acknowledges the music’s better suited for a funeral.
Buddy’s dad tries to take him home, but Buddy pushes him away.
The Pink Ladies and T-Birds sneak in and start spreading the word about the alternate dance. They steal a few decorations as they make their way through the gym, with students hustling out of the gym as soon as they receive word about the Frosty Palace.
Hazel and Wally are all in on heading to the Frosty Palace, and even Susan’s ready to bolt. She tells the band about the new location and asks for Johnny’s phone number as the gym clears out.
Tippy and the PTA don’t have any success trying to get the situation under control.
The alternate dance gets underway at the Frosty Palace and everyone’s having a fantastic time except for Cynthia, Shy Guy, and Lydia. Lydia gets under Cynthia’s skin when she tells her she knows this isn’t the real Cynthia.
Cynthia reacts by trying to force Shy Guy into a physical relationship which Shy Guy resists. That’s not what he wants and Cynthia insults him, saying he’s not a real man.
Meanwhile, the Frosty Palace is filled with students having a blast. Olivia and Jane are thrilled since this is the party they’ve always wanted. Jane and Richie are flirting when Dot pushes between them, and says she needs to fly free – the guys have noticed her and she’s ready to have a good time. Richie’s happy for her and happy when Jane suggests she sub in as his date.
Johnny Vavoom and the band arrive to cheers, and the malt shop’s now a dancing mob scene. Nancy realizes there are too many people and Hazel suggests it’s not a capacity problem; people need to dance smaller.
Wally asks her to demonstrate how she dances, and Hazel does the hand jive. Jane says she’s a lifesaver and breaks out in the episode’s second song. Everyone follows Hazel and Jane’s lead and the crowded dance floor is once again manageable. Johnny Vavoom leads the dancers out of the Frosty Palace and into the parking lot while they continue to hand jive.
The steps: Kneecap, give a slap, record scratch, churn that butter, go home to your mother.
The song ends with Nancy kissing Potato. Gil and Olivia are about to kiss, but Olivia’s distracted when Susan shows up. Olivia and the Pink Ladies follow Susan inside and Olivia tells her she’s not welcome. She wouldn’t let them in the gym; she can’t come in the Frosty Palace.
Susan insists it wasn’t her fault, and Jane thinks they should give her a chance to explain. Olivia points out everything Susan’s done – trying to get Richie beat up, throwing a party just to beat Jane in the election, etc. Susan fights back by saying she saw Olivia and Mr. Daniels kissing right before the dance.
Gil’s stunned and so are the Pink Ladies.
Olivia doesn’t want to take their fight somewhere private and tells the crowd that Susan slept with Buddy and then lied about Buddy sleeping with Jane. Jane reminds Olivia they weren’t going to tell anyone and Olivia’s hurt Jane is taking Susan’s side.
A drunk Buddy shoves a guy laughing at Susan and is about to punch him in the face when he accidentally elbows Dot in the nose. She dissolves into sobs as Wally and Hazel make a hasty exit. Richie also thinks he and Olivia should leave, and she accuses him of being on Susan’s side. Olivia burns down more bridges by blurting out that Jane kissed Buddy just 24 hours after breaking up with Richie.
Richie can’t believe Buddy kissed Jane after stealing the election, and now it’s Jane’s turn to be surprised. Buddy confesses that his dad and the principal cheated and Jane was the actual winner.
Buddy and Richie get into the fight that’s been brewing all season, and it results in Dot taking another blow to the face. The shoving spreads throughout the crowd, and a window’s shattered. The cops speed up, lights flashing, as everyone tries to escape the melee.
Buddy and Richie continue their fight, finally making it out into the parking lot. The cops break them apart and drag both Buddy and Richie away.
Wally and Hazel have escaped the madness and take a peaceful walk home. Hazel thinks it’s weird how everyone just assumes they belong together, even though they have nothing in common. But Wally believes they’re not actually all that different. She looks to the stars to escape and he surfs for the same reason.
Wally has the lead in the next song as he describes what it feels like to be catching waves. When she’s lonely, the galaxy’s got her, and when his feelings get too deep, he hits the water. Together, they might not feel alone. He compliments everything about her and assures her she doesn’t need to change a thing.
The song ends with a sweet kiss.
Back at the Frosty Palace, Jane volunteers to go to the police station with Olivia. Olivia blames her for everything, claiming that if she’d just picked a side, this would never have happened. Nancy tries to calm down the situation, saying Pink Ladies must stick together.
Olivia resigns from the Pink Ladies and storms off.
Cynthia returns home while Nancy’s left on her own with a huge mess to clean up at the Frosty Palace. She stares at the shattered window which mirrors her shattered dreams.
Jane finds Olivia’s Pink Ladies jacket on her porch when she makes it home.
Olivia makes another horrible decision and heads over to Mr. Daniels’ place. He welcomes her in.
