‘This Is Us’ Season 6 Episode 18 Preview: Series Finale Photos and Video

After one of the best-written, well-acted, and emotionally moving episodes of the entire series, NBC’s This Is Us prepares to give fans a memorable goodbye with season six episode 18, the series finale. Simply titled “Us,” episode 18 airs on May 24, 2022 and finds the family gathering for Rebecca’s funeral and to celebrate her life.

The sixth and final season stars Milo Ventimiglia as Jack Pearson, Mandy Moore as Rebecca Pearson, Sterling K. Brown as Randall, Chrissy Metz as Kate, Justin Hartley as Kevin, Susan Kelechi Watson as Beth Pearson, and Chris Sullivan as Toby.

The Plot, Courtesy of NBC:

Everyone has a family. And every family has a story. This Is Us chronicles the Pearson family across the decades: from Jack (Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Moore) as young parents in the 1980s to their kids (the big three), Kevin (Hartley), Kate (Metz) and Randall (Brown) searching for love and fulfillment in the present day along with Toby (Sullivan) and Beth (Kelechi Watson).

This grounded, life-affirming dramedy reveals how the tiniest events in our lives impact who we become, and how the connections we share with each other can transcend time, distance, and even death.

Review: ‘Downton Abbey: A New Era’

Downton Abbey: A New Era

The British aristocrats and their servants have handled many situations, including a visit from the Royal family, but now Downton Abbey is about to be invaded by a Hollywood film company. The studio plans to shoot a movie at Downton as the film industry makes the transition from the silent era to sound in the second Downton Abbey feature film, Downton Abbey: A New Era.

The film begins with Violet Crawley (Maggie Smith) inheriting a villa in the south of France from an old acquaintance whose relatives invite the Grahams to visit. Lord and Lady Grantham (Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern), Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael), Tom (Allen Leech), Mr. Carson (Jim Carter), and Maud Bagshaw (Imelda Staunton) travel to France to visit the villa and to try and figure out why it was left to Violet.

Meanwhile, back at Downton Abbey, Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) and the servants are busy catering to a film crew that’s making a silent film at Downton. While the family believes the Hollywood visitors to be tacky and a bit vile, the servants are starstruck and anxious to meet them.

Unfortunately for the production, the Hollywood studio calls the crew at Downton and instructs them to shut down because they’re switching to making talking pictures. Lady Mary suggests to the film’s director, Jack Barber (Hugh Dancy), that instead of shutting down they should turn the film into a talky. However, there’s just one problem – leading lady Myrna Dalgleish (Laura Haddock), although beautiful, has a thick cockney accent that doesn’t fit her character in the film.

Desperate to save the movie, the director asks Mary to provide the voice of the female lead in voice-over recordings. Mary, since it was her suggestion, reluctantly agrees. As the two work closely together to save the film, Mary and the director begin to have feelings for one another.

Charming, witty, and elegant, Downton Abbey: A New Era is a fitting addition to the PBS series with beautiful locales, quick-witted and droll dialogue, and a cast who knows exactly how to play the characters they originated on the small screen. It’s a bit bigger in scope and production but the movie still plays out and feels like a PBS mini-series presented on the big screen.

Maggie Smith steals every scene she’s in (as always) as Violet, the matriarch of the family who has one last secret yet to be discovered. The only downside is there isn’t enough of Smith in the film and when she’s off the screen her absence is greatly felt.

Michelle Dockery is the other cast member who truly shines in this second big-screen outing. The chemistry between her and Dancy as the director is subtle yet strong. It’s a quiet simmer of sexual tension and longing.

The production of the film is outstanding, with the sets, costumes, and vehicles all bringing back to life an era long gone, destroyed by WWII.

With its lavish production, breathtaking scenery, and an extremely talented cast, Downton Abbey: A New Era is sure to entertain fans of the PBS series as well as those looking for a bit of British soapy elegance and dry humor.

‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 3 Trailer: Sparrows Take Center Stage

The full trailer for Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy season three finds the Hargreeves discovering they’ve been replaced by Sparrows. Of course, the Hargreeves brought it on themselves. They changed the timeline and created a time paradox that resulted in the Umbrella Academy transforming into the Sparrow Academy populated by Sparrows who the Hargreeves all – except maybe Number Five – believe to be d*ckheads.

The Umbrella Academy stars Elliot Page as Viktor Hargreeves, Tom Hopper as Luther Hargreeves, David Castañeda as Diego Hargreeves, Robert Sheehan as Klaus Hargreeves, Aidan Gallagher as Number Five, and Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison Hargreeves. Justin H. Min plays Ben Hargreeves, Colm Feore is Reginald Hargreeves, Ritu Arya is Lila Pitts, Justin Cornwell is Marcus, Britne Oldford is Fei, Jake Epstein is Alphonso, Genesis Rodriguez is Sloane, and Cazzie David plays Jayme.

The critically acclaimed series is based on comic books by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá. Way and Bá are involved as co-executive producers. Steve Blackman created the series and serves as showrunner and executive producer. Director Jeff F. King, Mike Richardson, and Keith Goldberg also executive produce.

Season three premieres on June 22, 2022.

The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Poster

Netflix released the following season three synopsis:

“After putting a stop to 1963’s doomsday, the Umbrella Academy return home to the present, convinced they prevented the initial apocalypse and fixed this godforsaken timeline once and for all. But after a brief moment of celebration, they realize things aren’t exactly (okay, not at all) how they left them. Enter the Sparrow Academy. Smart, stylish, and about as warm as a sea of icebergs, the Sparrows immediately clash with the Umbrellas in a violent face-off that turns out to be the least of everyone’s concerns.

Navigating challenges, losses, and surprises of their own – and dealing with an unidentified destructive entity wreaking havoc in the Universe (something they may have caused) — now all they need to do is convince Dad’s new and possibly better family to help them put right what their arrival made wrong. Will they find a way back to their pre-apocalyptic lives? Or is this new world about to reveal more than just a hiccup in the timeline?”

Review: ‘Emergency’ Starring RJ Cyler and Donald Watkins

Emergency Movie Review
RJ Cyler, Sebastian Chacon and Donald Watkins in ‘Emergency’ (Photo Credit: Quantrell Colbert © 2021 Amazon Content Services LLC)

Will society ever reach a point where Emergency’s premise isn’t considered timely? The smartly written college comedy could have been released in the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s…you get my point…and would have been just as relevant and relatable.

Buchanan University roomies and BFFs Sean (RJ Cyler) and Kunle (Donald Watkins) couldn’t be more disparate. Kunle’s studious and on track to attend an Ivy League college. Sean’s goal is much less ambitious; he wants his photo on the Black Student Union wall. His plan? Make it into the Buchanan University history books by becoming the first Black student to complete the Legendary Tour. Sounds kind of impressive, doesn’t it? It is, I guess, if you consider hitting seven parties in one night impressive.

Sean’s Legendary Tour dream turns out to be a waking nightmare when he and Kunle discover an unconscious white girl (Maddie Nichols) on their living room floor. If this was the usual college comedy – you know, populated with goofy white guys – we’d be treated to some bumbling and stumbling before one of the dudes winds up falling for the girl. Or something of that sort. But Emergency isn’t a typical college frat boy film. Sean and Kunle aren’t going to be given the benefit of the doubt if they’re discovered with an obviously out-of-it white girl in their home.

Sean immediately realizes how quickly the situation can spiral out of control and refuses to allow Kunle to call the police. Their video game-obsessed roomie Carlos (Sebastian Chacon) sides with Sean, all too aware one wrong step – or even a right step interpreted the wrong way – could, best case scenario, lead to them being tossed in jail. The more likely outcome would involve one of the three roommates winding up dead, all because some random drunk girl walked through the wrong door.

Against all logic, Sean starts off as the de facto leader of the trio’s bizarre quest to dump the drunk chick somewhere safe. Kunle would be the better choice given that Sean’s cloaked in smoke, sucking on a vape and getting increasingly high as the night goes on.

Despite their good intentions, the bad decisions pile up and the odds of escaping the night without encountering the police decrease by the minute. And as the trio argue over how to survive the night, the film shifts from a college comedy to a gripping, insightful indictment of racism.

RJ Cyler and Donald Watkins are terrific, hitting all the right beats as Sean and Kunle’s last big night of partying before they leave Buchanan deteriorates into an evening of terror that could wind up destroying their lives. Screenwriter K.D. Dávila’s script is so spot-on, yet Emergency still manages to be incredibly entertaining while dealing with systemic racism. It’s not in the least bit nuanced; the message is in your face, unmistakable, and as attention-grabbing as flashing blue lights on a cop car.

Continuing to navigate their own personal journeys – including Dr. Bloom’s relationship with Dr. Leyla Shinwari, who is now her resident, Dr. Frome’s new career and Dr. Reynolds’ personal entanglements – the doctors will strive to embrace the joy and successes in their lives.

But there is a surprise in store for our heroes. Dr. Veronica Fuentes is joining the New Amsterdam team to help turn around the overburdened and underfunded hospital. Elton John Documentary Will Provide a Definitive Look at the Pop Icon’s Life

Sir Elton John Documentary
Disney+ announces a documentary on Sir Elton John (Photo Credit: Gregg Kemp / Disney+)

Sir Elton John’s incredible life and career will be chronicled in the feature documentary Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: The Final Elton John Performances and The Years That Made His Legend. The documentary’s being made with the full support of the pop icon, and Sir Elton’s partner David Furnish is directing and producing along with R.J. Cutler (Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry).

The Disney Original Documentary production will feature never-before-seen concert footage, interviews, and performance clips. The documentary, which will have a limited theatrical release before airing on Disney+, is described as “the official feature on Elton John.”

“Elton and I could not think of a better collaborator than R.J. Cutler for a film that represents more than just Elton’s career — it’s his life. From the Troubadour to Dodger Stadium, we knew that R.J. would help guide Elton’s story and its many layers in a way that feels authentic and evocative. We’re ecstatic to be working together,” said producer/director David Furnish.

Commenting on the documentary, producer/director R.J. Cutler said, “What a thrill and an honor it is that David Furnish and I get to create this intimate and unique look at one of the world’s most celebrated artists. As it has for so many others, Elton John’s music has had deep meaning for me for decades, and this opportunity is nothing short of a career highlight and privilege.”

The documentary is produced by This Machine Filmworks and Rocket Entertainment, with John Battsek, Jane Cha Cutler, and Elise Pearlstein executive producing.

“There are no superlatives left to describe Elton John and his impact on music and culture — he’s simply unrivaled,” said Bob Chapek, CEO of The Walt Disney Company. “Like a good Disney story, Elton’s music has both universal appeal and the ability to connect with audiences on a deeply personal level. He has been part of the Disney family since 1994 when he helped make The Lion King an instant classic, and we could not be more excited to collaborate with him on this new documentary.”

The film will also look back at the extraordinary first five years of John’s career when, between 1970 and 1975, he released 10 iconic albums, seven of which went to No. 1 on the Billboard charts and became a global phenomenon.

With exclusive new interviews and performance clips from Madison Square Garden, London, and other performance venues, the film will be the definitive portrait of one of the world’s most successful musical artists of all time, who has inspired multiple generations of audiences and musicians.
