Netflix just released the first batch of photos from Stranger Things season four volume one which finds the action taking place in four locations, including California. With the young group of actors growing up, the tone of the upcoming fourth season will be different from previous seasons. In an interview for the Present Company With Krista Smith podcast, co-creator Ross Duffer described what fans can expect from the much-anticipated fourth season.

“When we pitched it to Netflix all those years ago, we pitched it as the kids are…The Goonies in E.T.,” said Ross Duffer. “That’s their storyline. And the adults are in Jaws and Close Encounters and then the teens are in Nightmare on Elm Street or Halloween. But, this year, we don’t have the kids. We can’t do The Goonies anymore. And so, suddenly, we’re leaning much harder into that horror movie territory that we love. It was fun to make that change.”

Season four volume one will premiere on May 27, 2022 followed by volume two on July 1st.

Stranger Things season four stars Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, David Harbour as Jim Hopper, Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven, Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler, Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson, and Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair. Noah Schnapp plays Will Byers, Sadie Sink is Max Mayfield, Natalia Dyer is Nancy Wheeler, Charlie Heaton is Jonathan Byers, Joe Keery is Steve Harrington, and Maya Hawke is Robin Buckley. Priah Ferguson stars as Erica Sinclair, Brett Gelman plays Murray, Cara Buono is Karen Wheeler, and Matthew Modine is Dr. Brenner.

Additional cast members include Jamie Campbell Bower as Peter Ballard, Joseph Quinn as Eddie Munson, Eduardo Franco as Argyle, Sherman Augustus as Lt. Colonel Sullivan, Mason Dye as Jason Carver, Nikola Djuricko as Yuri, and Tom Wlaschiha as Dmitri.

Season four also features Myles Truitt as Patrick, Regina Ting Chen as Ms. Kelly, Grace Van Dien as Chrissy, Logan Riley Bruner as Fred Benson, Logan Allen as Jake, Elodie Grace Orkin as Angela, John Reynolds as Officer Callahan, Rob Morgan as Chief Powell, Amybeth McNulty as Vickie, and Robert Englund as Victor Creel.

Stranger Things was created by The Duffer Brothers. The Duffer Brothers, Iain Paterson, Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, and Curtis Gwinn executive produce. Shawn Levy, The Duffer Brothers, and Nimród Antal direct.

Netflix released the following synopsis for season four:

“It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time – and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made things any easier. In this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.”

Rat in the Kitchen: Natasha Leggero and Chef Ludo Lefebvre Discuss the Cooking Competition Series

Rat in the Kitchen Hosts

TBS’s new unscripted cooking competition series Rat in the Kitchen puts a weird twist on traditional culinary competitions. Despite its name, Rat in the Kitchen has nothing to do with Pixar’s Ratatouille. Instead, the “rat” in this cooking show is a saboteur who tries to screw up his or her team’s dishes without getting caught.

Rat in the Kitchen will premiere on Thursday, March 31, 2022 at 9pm ET/PT. Hosted by Natasha Leggero and Chef Ludo Lefebvre, Rat in the Kitchen’s competitors are a mix of home cooks and professional chefs. Each team will be tasked with figuring out who among them is the rat as they attempt to create dishes that impress judge Lefebvre.

During the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, ITV’s Chief Creative Officer David Eilenberg revealed the rat was given a lot of freedom to figure out how to sabotage dishes. “If other contestants were foolish enough to leave the food alone during the plating process, the rat could jump in then,” said Eilenberg. “It was very free-flowing in terms of when the rat might jump in to do their dastardly deeds.”

Eilenberg discussed the casting process, noting the rat was chosen from among the chefs cast in the show. Being selected to be the rat was actually a surprise to the chosen chef.

“You want them to be ready to become a saboteur. What’s been really interesting watching the show evolve is that every rat we ultimately ended up selecting brought his or her own personality and skills to the job,” said Eilenberg. “And, again, without giving too much away, you saw people occasionally deceive the other contestants even about parts of their own background. They got very deep into going cloak and dagger.”

Eilenberg added: “You should know that the rat doesn’t know that they’re the rat until the night before shooting. The rat doesn’t have weeks to prepare to be a rat. They have one tense night to figure out how they’re going to pull this off.”

Host Natasha Leggero enjoyed watching the chefs bond and then being shocked when the rat was revealed.

“One of the most fun things about watching it is the chefs really start to trust each other and make friends and allies with each other throughout the game, and then oftentimes, they find out that someone has deceived them who they’ve been almost becoming friends with. So, I think that really added to it. I feel like they were all so convincing,” said Leggero.

Chef Ludo Lefebvre confirmed that neither he nor Natasha Leggero knew the rat’s identity. “If I will be a contestant, I would test all the food and don’t trust anybody,” said Lefebvre, laughing. “It was hard to find the rats, you know. It was hard, especially if you have a good cook or bad cook. Sometimes it was just a big mess. It was hard to figure out what’s going on in the kitchen. I was not used to seeing a kitchen (with) so many different foods in the kitchen, movement, creativity. I mean, there’s a lot of chefs in one kitchen, and a lot of things going on. It’s very difficult to find the rats.”

Leggero admitted they got worse at guessing the rat’s identity as the season went on, mainly because the rats were getting better at hiding in plain sight.

“There were a few episodes where we were squealing. We couldn’t believe who it was. I definitely don’t think we got better at guessing,” said Leggero.

The best rats were also the best actors, according to Leggero.

“I don’t know what I can say…but, you know, just pretending like you’re tripping and spilling something, and it feeling very real and then finding out, oh, that was a sabotage,” explained Leggero. “I think everyone would come up with their own unique things, and I think the acting would really help, too.”

‘My Brilliant Friend’ is Renewed for Season 4

My Brilliant Friend Renewed Season 4

My Brilliant Friend has earned a fourth season order from HBO and Rai. The popular drama kicked off its third season – My Brilliant Friend: Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay – on February 28, 2022 and will wrap up on April 18th. HBO’s announcement didn’t indicate when fans can expect the fourth season to debut.

HBO and Rai confirmed season four will be based on Elena Ferrante’s fourth and final book of the Neapolitan Novels, My Brilliant Friend: The Story Of The Lost Child. Saverio Costanzo created the HBO-Rai series.

“When we decided to bring Elena Ferrante’s masterpiece Neapolitan Novels to the screen, we knew Elena and Lila’s story had to be told in its entirety. It’s both thrilling and bittersweet to embark on this fourth and final season. We’re deeply grateful to the entire creative team led by Saverio Costanzo and Lorenzo Mieli, and to our season 3 director Daniele Luchetti. We look forward to completing the quartet and know The Story of the Lost Child will bring the series to a close with the same heart, intimacy, and epic storytelling that has defined Elena and Lila’s journey from the beginning,” said Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming.

My Brilliant Friend is an asset that has proven the success of our production partnership with HBO Entertainment, Fandango, Fremantle, The Apartment and Wildside. What lies behind this success is the precious opportunity offered by Elena Ferrante’s four Neapolitan Novels and the realistic, exciting, and originally Italian imagery that has brought to life the audio-visual transposition of the friendship between Lila and Lenù. This mix between a strongly characterized environment, marked first of all by the dialect, then by its humanity and by the emotions heightened through the power of a female friendship, has proved to be a driving force for seriality, as well as a showcase for the creativity and expertise of Italy’s audio-visual industry,” said Maria Pia Ammirati, Director of Rai Fiction. “Our aim is to maximize this in the wake of a now well-established cooperation full of prospects.”

HBO released the following description of the series and of season three:

My Brilliant Friend is the tale of Elena Greco and the most important friend in her life. She met Raffaella Cerullo, whom she has always called Lila, in the first year of primary school in 1950. Set in a dangerous and fascinating Naples, their story goes on to cover more than 60 years of their lives and explores the mystery of Lila, Elena’s brilliant friend and – in a way – both her best friend and her worst enemy.

Starring Margherita Mazzucco and Gaia Girace, season three follows Elena and Lila, both now grown women, during the great open sea of the 1970s. Lila took her young son and left her husband and a comfortable life to work as a factory worker in the toughest of conditions, while Elena left the neighborhood to study in Pisa, and is now an author of a successful novel that has paved the way to an affluent and cultivated world. They now navigate a scenario of hopes and uncertainties, still united by their strong and ambivalent bond.

Inside the Watergate Series ‘Gaslit’ with the Cast and Executive Producers

Gaslit Sean Penn and Julia Roberts
Sean Penn as John Mitchell and Julia Roberts as Martha Mitchell in Starz’s ‘Gaslit’

Starz’s limited series Gaslit takes a deep dive into Watergate, focusing on the central figures involved in the political scandal that took down Nixon’s presidency. Series creator/showrunner Robbie Pickering describes Gaslit as not just a political thriller but a relationship drama, with Watergate whistleblower Martha Mitchell (played by Oscar winner Julia Roberts) and her husband, Nixon’s Attorney General John Mitchell (played by Oscar winner Sean Penn), at the core of the story.

“Not many people know the story about Martha and that’s kind of a tragedy, and I hope, after this, they will, and they’ll know the story of Mo Dean (played by Betty Gilpin) which is fascinating as well,” said Pickering during the Television Critics Association winter press tour.

Pickering is a self-proclaimed Nixon geek and wanted to take the limited series in a different direction than other Watergate projects, avoiding the labeling of key players as either heroes or villains. Most dwell in a grey area, and Pickering was determined to show that.

“When you really read the history, what you’re struck by is the humanity of everybody in this story and how relatable they are. And I think the (‘Slow Burn’) podcast really did a great job of putting us into their shoes. I don’t know if back then many people knew who John Mitchell was. Martha Mitchell was a huge celebrity. I mean, people knew John Mitchell as the villain, Martha Mitchell was a huge celebrity. But I’m more interested and I think we’re all more interested in them as human beings and not political animals or anything like that. I think that in a weird way is comforting watching the series, is seeing the humanity in all these people and knowing that it wasn’t some special place in time that is just so idiosyncratic, it’ll never happen again,” explained Pickering.

Betty Gilpin recalled that while researching Watergate she had to adjust to the fact that during that time period celebrities – and politicians – were much more guarded.

“Whereas now, someone’s public persona is sort of the branding of their authentic self and real self, and that they present themselves as, ‘Oh, this is who I really am.’ And back then it was sort of your public self was very formal, and austere, and sort of this stiff, Norman Rockwell version of yourself,” said Gilpin. “The White House was still sort of seen as this distant Camelot, and it’s sort of the time when that was getting a little stale and people weren’t trusting it as much.

For Martha Mitchell to be the opposite of a stale Norman Rockwell façade and have id leaking out of her eyelids and so her authentic self and telling you the truth that you don’t want hear every other sentence…it was just a mental adjustment for me to that that was really rare. Whereas now we’re sort of inundated with people being their true, authentic, loud, brash selves in our face that Martha Mitchell was sort of refreshing even to people who didn’t agree with her (politics).”

Shining the Spotlight on Watergate’s Women

Executive producer Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot) believes it’s been a deliberate choice to keep the women central to the Watergate scandal in the background.

“I grew up, obviously, like Robbie, hugely fascinated with the Watergate scandal. All The President’s Men was one of my favorite movies. I watched every documentary. I’ve seen the Nixon movie by Oliver Stone but I don’t think it’s a mistake that the women who played an instrumental role in this scandal were ignored and silenced. I mean, that’s literally one of the reasons why I found the story compelling when I listened to the ‘Slow Burn’ podcast- that this was by design,” said Esmail. “That is something that we’re sort of reckoning with today. And so, for me, that’s the perspective shift that this story takes on.”

Pickering shared that he hopes his young daughter will be taught the truth about Martha Mitchell’s important role in Watergate and that this series will go a long way toward correcting history.

“I want her to learn that Martha Mitchell played an instrumental role in it and she wasn’t just some drunk crazy lady. She was right. She was the first person to publicly blow the whistle on these people. I don’t want her to have to find that out by digging and digging and talking to historians. I want her to be taught that in school – and she should and everybody should,” said Pickering.

Gaslit Dan Stevens and Betty Gilpin
Dan Stevens as John Dean and Betty Gilpin as Mo Dean in Starz’s ‘Gaslit’

Examining the Private Lives of Public Figures

Pickering describes Gaslit as the story of two marriages and how complicity destroys or binds those relationships, with Watergate as the backdrop. That means much of the action will take place during the couples’ private moments away from the spotlight.

“In the case of John Dean (played by Dan Stevens) and Mo Dean, it really bounded them together. I mean, they’re married to this day. And in the case of John Mitchell and Martha Mitchell, played by Sean and Julia, it really split them apart and wrecked a really beautiful love between them,” offered Pickering. “We really wanted to concentrate on that in the writers’ room. And I know even with G. Gordon Liddy, with Shea (Whigham’s) character, I mean, it wasn’t so much about the political machinations of what’s going on.”

Shea Whigham latched onto the fact Gordon was very “family-centric” when delving into Liddy. […]“Some of the best stuff that I enjoyed in the piece was the stuff with the family, the boys, and albeit in a prison but, yeah. I think just these themes that are running through (this) humanism of who these people are, and that’s what I wanted to tap into. That was what interested me,” said Whigham. “I thought when I read this thing, it came right off the page.”

As a Brit, Dan Stevens had just a surface-level understanding of the American political scandal. He was drawn to Gaslit by the personalities of those involved more so than the Watergate scandal itself.

“Since living in the States for about 10 years, I’ve made the best efforts to acquaint myself with American history and the American political system. But what I think really leaps out about something like this – for any nationality of actor – is when you’re given the opportunity to play more than just sort of a historical entry.

Anyone can go and read a book about this or read the Wikipedia entry, but when there are human stories lifting off the page, they kind of illustrate the depth of these stories,” explained Stevens. “I think what stood out for me for this one was the fact that what you don’t read on Wikipedia or any history books is about the wives and daughters of these men who were mentioned. And so even if you do have a sort of surface knowledge, the way that a story like this is told is deeply fascinating for someone who’s learning about the roots and the network of the American system.”

Stevens added: “There was a great book that was published last year called King Richard by Michael Dobbs that was a terrific illustration because a lot of the history around this can be – the books can be quite dry. They’re very factual […]I actually listened to the audiobook of that book and in between each chapter they play the relevant bits of the Nixon tapes. And you’re reminded of the actual voices of these people, rather than just seeing it in sort of a dry narrative. And that’s, I hope, what we’re doing with this.”

Executive producer Sam Esmail agreed that what drives the series is the people at the heart of the story and not the intricacies of the actual scandal.

“Someone asked earlier, is this about the Watergate break-in? I think that is background. It is solely about the people behind it. It is solely about the sort of drama between not just the couple but the sort of interrelationships between those couples. But at the same time, they are the engine of the story,” said Esmail. “It’s a thing that you just didn’t realize until you listened to that podcast and you watch this show that you really realize that this takes looking at Watergate to another direction when you realize what actually went on.”

Gaslit premieres on April 24, 2022 on Starz.
