‘Supernatural’ Season 14 Episode 12 Recap: “Prophet and Loss”

Supernatural Season 14 Episode 12

The CW’s Supernatural showed how a single scene can change the way we perceive an entire episode. This week’s “Prophet and Loss” (season 14 episode 12) was a much slower affair than the previous episodes, which had featured a lot more happening. But it was the stinger that saved all of it and made watching everything unfurl completely worth it.

We start off with Dean (Jensen Ackles) seemingly having completed his task of sealing himself in a coffin at the bottom of the ocean, panicking and calling for Sam. Thankfully, this was all a nightmare and we’re treated to a scene where Sam (Jared Padalecki) tries to talk his big brother out of going through with his suicidal plans.

However, Dean’s mind is made up and he doesn’t want to talk about what just happened. It wreaked too much of season 10 where the plot went humdrum as every episode seemed to go this way; the time when Dean was suffering from the Mark of Cain. This frustrating pace is continued throughout the episode with a few additions.

We then find out Sam’s already told Cas (Misha Collins) about these developments (cue in fans holding to their chests as their hearts melt seeing that we learn how close Cas and Sammy have become) only for Cas to inform him that he’s found nothing to extract Michael from Dean, and neither has Rowena.

Dean and Sam are then shown on the road, where Dean tries to do the whole “deathbed apologies” routine to Sam who is in no mood for it. And for good reason, because Dean doesn’t get to make this decision and then pretend he’s being some kind of martyr. We do get a nice teaser to next week’s ‘Lebanon’ with some references to John Winchester.

The boys pick up the trail of a man who’s gone insane. In a major throwback to how the show had worked back in season one, this man’s gruesome antics are shown in excruciating detail as he kills innocent people without remorse – one woman drowned in saltwater with her own blood; one man bound and his throat slit. After killing these people, the man carves Enochian symbols onto them.

After a little old-fashioned FBI snooping, the boys gather from Castiel that the insane man is Tony Alvarez – the next prophet in line after Donatello. But there’s a catch; Donatello’s still alive. In a change from the norm, we get the confrontation with the villain earlier on as the brothers prevent Tony from burning his next victim. Tony claims God has spoken to him to commit these atrocities (doesn’t sound much like Chuck, though, does it?) and kills himself when he can’t hear the voice anymore.

This doesn’t change anything, however, as the next prophet in line is bound to go crazy the way Tony did, which leads to the only option: plugging Donatello out of life support. After we get a nice view of Castiel posing as “Dr. Novak,” full with donning a doctor’s coat, the three don’t go through with unplugging Donatello as Sam learns from Donatello’s doctor that the latter had been awake recently and chanted something in Enochian.

A hopeful Castiel realizes Donatello’s mind is attempting to repair itself and vows to heal him, wanting to atone for putting Donatello in this state in the first place. Plans go the right way for the heroes for once and Donatello’s healed, although he can’t recall what happened to him.

Outside, Dean finds a half-drunk Sam by the Impala. Dean tries to start his martyr schtick again only for Sam to shut him up. Sam tells Dean he’s looked up to him all his life and, after saving the world so many times before, Dean’s just quitting now. Sam doesn’t agree with Dean’s decision because he’s giving up rather than fighting how Donatello just did. Dean does his usual non-committal response and gets the just reaction for it from Sam: he gets punched by his little brother.

Sam isn’t holding back, though, and keeps admonishing Dean while going for another punch. An astonished Dean holds him back before Sammy goes in for a full-on hug loving embrace. Sam appeals to Dean while holding him tight and we see Dean’s facade melting as the person he loves the most cries in his arms.

Dean agrees to do it Sam’s way for now but asks both his brother and Castiel to promise they will let him go into that box if they can’t destroy Michael permanently. While they do agree, Sam remains distraught at the prospect – in a lovely display of brotherly emotion by the actor.

The secondary story of the episode focused on our pal Nick’s exploits. Although he was apprehended last time, Nick (Mark Pellegrino) kills the officer holding him – brutally, I might add – as he stomps on his victim’s face before escaping. He then heads back to his house – the one we last saw way back in season five – and is greeted by a woman. An elated Nick figures it must be Lucifer posing as his wife again, but it turns out to literally be Nick’s wife. The woman has been stuck as a ghost for a decade because of Nick’s “unfinished business.”

It becomes clear that Nick has no plans to let Lucifer go, even though it meant it would finally free his long-suffering wife. Nick heads back from the house, leaving his wife to suffer on her own once again; his streak of vengeance ultimately only being a cover-up to his real intentions to get Lucifer back.

Overall, “Prophet and Loss” was almost entirely a slow burner. It didn’t pick up even once as the episode stuck to its slow pace. However, the saving grace, and ultimately the scene of the season, was the emotional confrontation between Sam and Dean at the end. While the two love each other, we haven’t seen these emotions seep to the surface in a long time, and this was a beautiful reminder of just how deep their love is.

Long-term fans will no doubt shed tears watching this scene as it reminds them how long we’ve stuck with these two, and with the promise of season 15 confirmed, we’ll have more time to spend with these Winchester boys.

Team Kaylie Cast

Production is now underway on the new action comedy series, Team Kaylie, created by Emmy Award winning producer Tracy Bitterolf (Emma Approved). Team Kaylie is a Netflix production created by Bitterolf and developed by Emmy nominated producer Pamela Eells O’Connell (Jessie, Bunk’d). Eells O’Connell is also the first season showrunner and serves as an executive producer.

Former The Voice contestant Bryana Salaz stars as “Kaylie Konrad, a rich, nineteen-year-old selfie obsessed celebrity who receives a community service court order to lead the wilderness club at an inner city middle school. When she is forced outside of her comfort zone in every possible way, she proves to her followers, the kids, and herself that she is more than just the pretty face her domineering mom-ager has always prized.”

“I set out to make a show that I would have wanted to watch when I was eight years old,” stated Tracy Bitterolf. “I ended up with a show that I want to watch as an adult, too, which means Team Kaylie is for kids and adults alike, or that I haven’t matured at all. Either way, I’m thrilled to be in business with Netflix at a time when they are so committed to making compelling content that resonates with kids and family audiences.”

Series showrunner Pamela Eells O’Connell began her career in television as a story editor on Family Matters. She’s been involved as an executive producer on Mad About You, The Nanny, Married with Children, and Ellen. Eells O’Connell recently created Disney’s Jessie and Bunk’d.

Additional Team Kaylie Cast and Characters, Courtesy of Netflix:

  • Alison Fernandez (Once Upon a Time) as Amber, a tough, impulsive, and street smart student leader of the Wilderness Club, who is less than thrilled by Kaylie’s presence.
  • Symera Jackson (Disney Channel’s Sydney To The Max) as Jackie, a straight A-student and rule follower who lives to people please and get into an Ivy League college.
  • Elie Samouhi (Bizaardvark) as Chewy, a bumbling class clown who stumbles to the beat of his own drum.
  • Kai Calhoun as Ray Ray, a pop-culture vulture who is fabulous, and he knows it. He worships Kaylie almost as much as her wardrobe.
  • Eliza Pryor (Alexa & Katie) as Valeria, a would-be witch whose spells are almost as bad as her people skills.

‘Sex Education’ is Renewed for a Second Season

Netflix’s popular high school coming-of-age comedy Sex Education has graduated to a second season. The critically acclaimed series will return for a second season consisting of eight new episodes. The streaming service’s renewal announcement didn’t indicate when viewers can expect to binge the new season.

Season one debuted in January 2019 and, according to Netflix, has been watched by more than 40 million households. Filming is expected to begin on season two in the UK this spring.

Season two will bring back Gillian Anderson, Asa Butterfield, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Aimee-Lou Wood, Connor Swindells, Kedar Williams-Stirling, Tanya Reynolds, Patricia Allison, and Alistair Petrie.

Sex Education was created by Laurie Nunn, and Nunn will return as executive producer. Jamie Campbell is also on board as a season two executive producer.

Commenting on the renewal, creator Laurie Nunn said, “The reception to season one has been so exciting. Seeing how people across the world have connected to characters that began as ideas in my head is incredible. I’m hugely grateful to every person that has taken the time to watch the series, and I can’t wait to continue this amazing journey.”

“Laurie Nunn has captured the awkward teenage experience with a lot of heart and humor in Sex Education,” added Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content, Netflix. “Along with the Eleven team and executive producer and director Ben Taylor, she’s created a universally relatable series that has resonated with our members around the world.”

The Sex Education Season 1 Plot:

Otis Milburn (Butterfield) is an inexperienced, socially awkward high school student who lives with his mother, Jean (Anderson), a sex therapist. Surrounded by manuals, videos, and tediously open conversations about sex, Otis is a reluctant expert on the subject. When his home life is revealed at school, Otis realizes that he can use his specialist knowledge to gain status.

He teams up with Maeve (Mackey), a whip-smart bad-girl, and his best friend Eric (Gatwa) and together they set up an underground sex therapy clinic to deal with their fellow students’ weird and wonderful problems. Through his analysis of teenage sexuality, Otis realizes he may need some therapy of his own.

‘Hobbs & Shaw’ First Trailer: Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham Headline the F&F Spinoff

The first spinoff from the Fast & Furious franchise arrives with the release of the Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw trailer. Idris Elba transforms into a bulletproof superhuman bad guy named Brixton in the three minute trailer. Dwayne Johnson’s expert tracker Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham’s rogue MI-6 agent Deckard Shaw are called in to track down Brixton and, of course, over-the-top action sequences ensue.

The Fast & Furious franchise has rung up over $5 billion at the box office since the first film starring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker raced into theaters in 2001. F&F star Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson had issues working together (Johnson even took to social media to hint about the problems), so it’s not a shocker that box office superstar Johnson received his own spinoff that doesn’t require him to share screen time with Diesel.

Joining Johnson and Statham in Hobbs & Shaw are Idris Elba, Vanessa Kirby, and Helen Mirren. David Leitch (Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2) directed from a script by Chris Morgan. Johnson, Statham, Morgan, and Hiram Garcia produced the spinoff. Dany Garcia, Kelly McCormick, Steven Chasman, Ethan Smith, and Ainsley Davies executive produced.

Universal Pictures has set an August 2, 2019 theatrical release date.

The Plot:

Ever since hulking lawman Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America’s Diplomatic Security Service, and lawless outcast Shaw (Statham), a former British military elite operative, first faced off in 2015’s Furious 7, the duo have swapped smack talk and body blows as they’ve tried to take each other down.

But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever – and bests a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw’s sister – these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves.

Hobbs & Shaw blasts open a new door in the Fast universe as it hurtles action across the globe, from Los Angeles to London and from the toxic wasteland of Chernobyl to the lush beauty of Samoa.
