‘The Magicians’ Will Return for a Fifth Season

The Magicians Season 4

Syfy has made a whole lot of fans happy with the renewal of The Magicians for season five. The network confirmed today what had initially been announced on January 22nd that the popular fantasy series will be back for a fifth season. Henry Alonso Myers will be joining Sera Gamble and John McNamara as the fifth season showrunners.

Season four kicked off on January 23, 2019 and is currently airing on Wednesdays at 9pm ET/PT. The season four cast includes Jason Ralph, Stella Maeve, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Hale Appleman, Arjun Gupta, Summer Bishil, Rick Worthy, Jade Tailor, Brittany Curran and Trevor Einhorn.

The Magicians raised the bar at SYFY and has gained momentum season after season, attracting a new audience to the channel. We are proud of this series as it continues to break the boundaries of storytelling,” stated Bill McGoldrick, President, Scripted Content, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment.

“We couldn’t be happier or more excited to conjure another year of magic and all it entails — love, hate, loyalty, betrayal, sex, foul language, drugs, battling gods, monsters and the most dangerous enemies of all: other human beings. We have the best writers, producers, directors, cast and crew in the charted multiverse. Here’s how strongly we believe this: anyone who tries to poach a single one of them will be cursed. And we have the voodoo dolls to do it,” said executive producers and co-showrunners, John McNamara and Sera Gamble.

McNamara and Gamble also commented on the addition of Myers as a co-showrunner. “Henry has been with the show since minute one of Season 1. His talent, professionalism and love of all things magical has been instrumental to our success. We couldn’t be happier to see him become co-showrunner. Also, he bakes the greatest bread this side of the Hudson River.”

‘Whiskey Cavalier’ – Scott Foley Interview on Playing an FBI Agent in ABC’s New Action Series

Whiskey Cavalier Episode 1
Ana Ortiz, Scott Foley, Vir Das, Lauren Cohan and Tyler James Williams in episode 1 (ABC/Larry D. Horricks)

ABC’s Whiskey Cavalier is your next will they/won’t they TV coupling. Scott Foley (Scandal) plays FBI Agent Will Chase. Lauren Cohan (The Walking Dead) plays CIA Agent Frankie Trowbrige. It’s not just their agencies that are at odds, they both have their own way of saving the world but they’re going to have to work together.

The action-packed show films in Prague and all around Europe, but Foley and Cohan came to Los Angeles for the Television Critics Association panel on Whiskey Cavalier. We spoke with Foley more after the panel about all the tropes of hour-long action-comedy. Whiskey Cavalier premieres on February 27, 2019 at 10pm ET/PT on ABC.

What are some of the tropes you’re trying to change with this show?

Scott Foley: “For me, I have a hard time relating to the sort of, I don’t want to say soulless, but the tough don’t show your heart characters. To play one who is willingly open about his emotions and his feelings is so much more interesting and one I relate to much more.”

How so?

Scott Foley: “How so? There’s more to do. I can laugh, I can cry instead of just having sort of deadpan face looking over a body thinking we’ve got to figure this out. There’s things to relate to. It’s like being a person.”

Are you a crier in real life? What makes you emotional?

Scott Foley: “I think I’m emotional like Will. I think Will is more of a real life character than the tropes you see on other shows, if that makes sense. Am I a crier in real life? When I have to be. When it gets me what I want.”

How many days a week did you work on Scandal?

Scott Foley: “On Scandal? I was there probably four or five days a week.”

Any hesitation to take a lead role that’s there the whole time?

Scott Foley: “No, no. I knew exactly what I was getting myself into. I’ve been fortunate enough to be doing this for 25 years or so. Mostly in the drama space, so I was well aware of the workload that was coming my way. I‘m still young enough I can pull it off for a couple more years.”

How’s your frequent flyer miles?

Scott Foley: “I don’t get to fly as much as you’d think. We’re sort of stuck over there. A little puddle jump here and there but for the most part, it’s all in Prague. We’ve shot in London and Paris, I’m stuck in Prague. It’s a rough life, man. It’s a rough life. I’ve got three kids in school over there, my wife’s over there, we love it. It’s great.”

The whole family moved to Prague for this?

Scott Foley: “Yeah, what do you mean for this? This is it. I grew up overseas. My wife and I talked about giving our kids the opportunity to do the same thing. This came along and we’re jumping at it. We’re done filming our 13 episodes the beginning of March but my kids are in school until June. So we’ll stay and we’ll travel around.”

Do you get to see your family with all this this work?

Scott Foley: “It is labor intensive. I don’t get to see them as much as I’d like but the fact that they’re there with me, I can go into their rooms at night after they’re in bed, give ‘em a kiss or see them in the morning before I go. It’s important.”

Is playful the toughest tone to hit?

Scott Foley: “It’s been a hard tone. The one thing we wanted this show to be was fun. Obviously, everybody has their own idea of what fun is, but finding the tone of this has been, by far, the hardest thing. You get on these notes calls with executives and they’re drama executives because we’re doing an hour-long show. They want less jokes and more spy stuff. You get on set and let’s push the spy stuff away and find some more jokes. That’s the fun stuff for us and that’s really where the characters live. The spy stories are what take us from the beginning to the end, but the characters live in those comedic moments and that’s really important for us.”

What fun stuff is coming up?

Scott Foley: “Oh, what fun stuff isn’t coming up? We’re shooting episode 12 of 13 right now. You’ll get to see us in London. I’m living a dream here. I’m jumping off bridges. Lauren and I drove a motorboat under the London Tower Bridge on the Thames. We’ve shot at the Tate Modern. We have huge ski set pieces that we’re shooting in Austria.”

Do you say no sometimes?

Scott Foley: “I’m so glad I’m not riding a motorcycle down a staircase, but look, I’m 46 years old. I try to do as much as I can myself but there are times when I know that okay, I’d rather not have knee surgery in the off season so I’m gonna let you do that, buddy, because that’s your job.”

Do you feel like James Bond?

Scott Foley: “Yeah, but having more fun. James Bond gets to do all my stuff but I get to tell a joke every now and then, although he does have a couple cracks, doesn’t he?”

Whiskey Cavalier Episode 1
Scott Foley and Lauren Cohan in ‘Whiskey Cavalier’ (ABC/Larry D. Horricks)

How do you stay energized for such a physical job?

Scott Foley: “You would think it’s fairly complicated. I’ve been so busy in Prague. I’m wearing a suit from Scandal that’s a little big because I haven’t been to the gym in six months. I don’t have time to go to the gym. The fight rehearsals and dealing with all the stunts keeps me in fairly decent shape and my day is full. If I’ve got a scene that’s off, I’m doing a fight rehearsal with the stunt guys, working the next big set piece or I’m in a wardrobe fitting. It’s a busy gig and like I said to you earlier, I knew what I was getting into. I’m happy to have it.”

Was there one moment you were like, “What the hell have I gotten myself into?”

Scott Foley: “During the pilot, the second day. It was 10 below zero Celsius. With the windchill it was like 17 below. I was basically wearing this. I had three layers of long underwear on. They’d yell cut and the hair and makeup women would come to me with those hot water bottles that your grandmother uses, and I woke up the next day wind burned and exhausted and I thought I might rather be in prison. This is pretty bad.”

How often do you go home hurt?

Scott Foley: “All the time. All the time. I go home bruised and sore and limping and cold. Then my wife tells me shut up and deal with it. ‘I’m the lead of a show, we’re in Prague on an ABC TV show, you’re going to be just fine,’ and she’s right.”

Have a lot of your relatives come out to visit the set?

Scott Foley: “Yes, yes, all the Polish family. In my house.”

Do they want to be on the show?

Scott Foley: “They might. It’s not going to happen. Part of the deal of us going to Prague, my wife Marika’s on the show, she’s an actress with a fairly successful career. She said to me, ‘I can’t miss pilot season. I can’t miss getting jobs because you want to go.’ I told Peter Roth, ‘What if she’s on the show?’ He basically said, ‘If you’ll shoot in Prague, you can put your whole family on the show.’ So I’m going to put my whole family. The kids are next.”

What’s the dynamic while you’re shooting with her?

Scott Foley: “We had many conversations. We’ve worked together before in the past and it was not a great experience. The first time we ever worked together, we had a scene on a show called The Unit years ago. We were blocking it out, the director was saying, ‘Scott, you’re going to come from over here and then you guys will have a kiss here.’ I said, ‘That all sounds good except I don’t think I come from here,’ and I had some sort of reason. In the middle of me explaining it, my wife said, ‘Will you just come from where he wants you to come from?’ I said, ‘Okay, sure.’ I was like, ‘Babe, we’re at work. You talk to me like that at home but you can’t do that at work.’ And we had that conversation before here, and it didn’t seem to matter. She still talks to me like that.”

Is that hard when you combine that and leave the home stuff at home?

Scott Foley: “It is. You can’t. You can’t leave it at home. In between takes we’re talking about kids and school and did you pack the lunch? Just life is there but we’ve reconciled and it’s working out really well.”

A lot of us treat our jobs as an escape. You can’t do that.

Scott Foley: “No, it’s hard to. On Scandal, I’m guilty of being the guy who, if my call time was 10am, I’d tell my wife, ‘Oh babe, they need me at 7am.’ I’d go and take a nap in my trailer. We have little kids.”

What stunts get you really excited and which are like oh no, not again?

Scott Foley: “Driving stuff makes me really excited because I get to sit in a car. Fighting is exhausting because it’s not just me and you fighting. It’s me fighting all of you guys and they’re all professional stuntmen and I’m not a professional fighter. The stunt guys map out the entire fight before I even get there and then they show me a video of it. It’s daunting. My stunt guy, Pavel, is a professional kickboxer. So he’ll show me a video of him kicking a guy in the face. I’m like, ‘My leg doesn’t get up that high. I don’t know how you do it.’ So they just get me a shorter stunt guy.”

Angus Macfadyen Joins the ‘Strange Angel’ Season 2 Cast

The period drama Strange Angel will return for a second season, and today CBS All Access announced Angus Macfadyen (Lost City of Z, Turn) has joined the show’s cast. According to the official announcement, Macfadyen will play Aleister Crowley.

Aleister Crowley is described as “the founder of Thelema and an accomplished man of mystery – as well as a writer of novels, a climber of mountains, and a master spy – comes to Jack Parsons, seeking Jack’s military connections, and ultimately pushes Jack to wield the full powers of magick and will.”

Angus Macfadyen joins a season two cast that includes Jack Reynor, Rupert Friend, Bella Heathcote, and Peter Mark Kendall. Strange Angel is based on George Pendle’s book and was created by Mark Heyman (Black Swan, The Skeleton Twins). Heyman executive produces with David DiGilio, Ridley Scott, and David W. Zucker.

Season two of the compelling series will air during the summer of 2019. Season one debuted on June 14, 2018 and is currently streaming on CBS All Access.

The Plot:

Strange Angel is inspired by the real life story of Jack Parsons and explores the dramatic intersection between genius and madness, science and science fiction.

Jack Parsons (Reynor), a brilliant and ambitious blue-collar worker in 1930s Los Angeles, works as a janitor at a chemical factory but dreams of building rockets that will take mankind to the moon. As he helps pioneer the unknown discipline of rocket science by day, by night, Parsons is pulled into a new occult religion created by Aleister Crowley, performing sex magick rituals to bend the world to his will and make his fantastical dreams a reality.

At the conclusion of the first season, Jack and his team from Caltech make a scientific breakthrough that secures the military’s interest as the country nears the brink of war. In season two, the U.S. is fully engaged in World War II, transforming Jack’s rocketry work into a lucrative business and further entrenching him in the military-industrial complex. While Jack’s career takes off, he and his wife Susan’s devotion to their new occult religion grows, leading them to invite the sex cult into their Pasadena mansion and to forge a personal relationship with the group’s notorious founder, Aleister Crowley himself.

‘90210’ Original Cast Members Reunite for an Event Series

Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green, and Tori Spelling are all confirmed to return for a special 90210 event series set to air this summer on Fox. According to the network, the reunited cast of 90210 will be playing heightened versions of themselves in the six-episode series.

Beverly Hills, 90210 left an indelible impact on pop culture and an entire generation,” stated Michael Thorn, President, Entertainment, FOX. “Its powerful legacy is an important part of our network’s DNA – bold stories not told anywhere else and bigger-than-life-characters – and we’re honored to bring back the beloved original cast members for 90210.”

Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler (90210, Awkward) are writing and executive producing. Gabrielle Carteris, Jennie Garth, Brian Austin Green, Jason Priestley, Tori Spelling and Ian Ziering will also executive produce.

The Plot:

90210 comes with a big twist: Priestley, Garth, Ziering, Carteris, Green and Spelling will play heightened versions of themselves in a brand-new serialized drama – with a healthy dose of irreverence – that is inspired by their real lives and relationships.

Having gone their separate ways since the original series ended 19 years ago, Jason, Jennie, Ian, Gabrielle, Brian and Tori reunite when one of them suggests it’s time to get a Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot up and running. But getting it going may make for an even more delicious soap than the reboot itself. What will happen when first loves, old romances, friends and frenemies come back together, as this iconic cast – whom the whole world watched grow up together – attempts to continue from where they left off?

Spawning generations of imitators, Beverly Hills, 90210 premiered on FOX on October 4, 1990, when it became an instant pop culture sensation and one of the most adored programs in the network’s history. Centered on the tony Los Angeles community identified in its title, the show aired for 10 seasons, during which it documented the trials and tribulations of a group of friends from high school to college and into early adulthood, as they navigated a myriad of coming-of-age dramas and complex rivalries, often making real-world headlines by tackling controversial and socially relevant topics.”

‘Roswell, New Mexico’ Season 1 Episode 6 Recap: “Smells Like Teen Spirit”

The CW’s Roswell, New Mexico season one episode five ended with Liz realizing neither Max nor Michael could have killed her sister, Rosa. That only leaves Isobel, and Max confirmed his sister was in fact responsible.

Season one episode six picks up with Max (Nathan Dean Parsons) providing Liz (Jeanine Mason) a detailed description of what happened on the night of Rosa’s death.

It’s 2004 and Max, Michael, and Isobel are kids camping out in the desert. They discuss their special skills and Michael admits his foster mom had a priest perform an exorcism on him to expel his demons. As Michael and Max talk in the tent, a stranger attacks Isobel not far away. Max, who hasn’t discovered his special skill yet, screams as he places his hand on the man’s chest. The stranger dies, and the three siblings are shocked and frightened.

Michael digs a grave simply by using the power of his mind. Isobel’s permanently scarred from the attack and subsequent murder of the stranger.

Max explains this to Liz, trying to get her to understand Isobel. She’s had blackouts since that night in 2004. Liz impatiently demands to know about the night Rosa died, but Max explains she needed to know Isobel’s backstory first.

Flashback to 2008, a time when Max thought they could be anyone and do anything. Michael (Michael Vlamis) receives a full ride to college. Max’s plan is to tutor and then travel around while writing his first novel. Isobel doesn’t have any plans post-high school.

The scene shifts to outside high school and Kyle (Michael Trevino) hugs Liz, announces he got into college, and then gets pulled away by his friends. Max watches this as does Alex. (It’s a young-looking cast so they can get by with playing their high school selves without any special makeup/hair.)

Not far away, Rosa (Amber Midthunder) is hit up by two so-called friends who demand she get them drugs for the prom. If not, they’ll ruin her life.

At the café, Liz is working on homework as Rosa and their dad argue. Rosa storms out but not before she tells Liz that she doesn’t think their mom is ever coming back. Their mom isn’t to be trusted.

Rosa meets Isobel on the roof of the café and they look at the stars. Both had horrible days, but the night’s now getting better. They hold hands as they talk about Isobel’s favorite constellation, Ophiuchus.

Michael and Alex (Tyler Blackburn) have a heart-to-heart, and Michael confirms he’s living out of his truck. Alex reveals there’s a tool shed behind his house. He stays there when things get bad with his dad.

Over at the café, Liz waits on Max and Isobel and Max is amazed she remembers his milkshake order. Rosa walks up, also busy at the family’s café, and Isobel has no idea that they’re friends or that she and Rosa had plans to watch a horror movie together. Rosa, confused and hurt by Isobel’s rebuff, stares after Isobel as she walks out of the café. Rosa turns around abruptly and runs smack dab into Liz, causing her to drop an entire order. They laugh and dance it off as Max watches – obviously in love.

Days later, Kyle picks up Liz and the two look incredible in their prom finery.

Max, Michael, and Isobel pose for the photographer on their way into the prom. They also look fabulous in their formal attire, although they’re all date-less. Max is about to turn to enter the prom when Liz arrives in her stunning red gown. Kyle’s right there so Max doesn’t linger to talk.

Despite the party and pretty clothes, Kyle and Alex get into a fist fight over an insult Kyle hurled Alex’s way. Michael pulls Alex away and Liz chases after them, telling Kyle to grow up as she hurries off.

Isobel goes from the prom to the café, which is closed and empty except for Rosa. She apologizes for acting weird and for not acknowledging their friendship in front of her brother. Isobel notices Rosa’s backpack and Rosa admits she needs a change of scenery and the help of a man who will get her through withdrawals. Isobel offers to leave with Rosa, an offer that renders Rosa speechless.

Max catches up with Liz and they talk about Kyle. She thinks his ego blew up and then confesses she doesn’t think they’ll work it out. Max is sorry she’s hurting and she admits she had a bad day and wants her mom, but her mom’s probably off somewhere drinking. She cries as she confesses she needs her mom to take care of her. She’s not all grown up yet.

Liz lays her head on Max’s shoulder and he hugs her. They stare into each other’s eyes briefly but don’t kiss. He gets her to smile and they’re still talking when Michael runs up panicking that Isobel has vanished. Max hands her his red rose before rushing off with his brother.

Max and Michael finally track down Isobel the morning after the prom and she’s not sure what’s happened. She has red paint on her hands, and they realize she was with Rosa when they see a drawing on the side of a van. They accuse her of being on drugs, and she admits she’s just upset because they’re leaving and she’ll be stuck in Roswell without them. Max suggests she live her own life, and she runs off saying she can handle her own problems.

That night Michael’s in the tool shed Alex told him about, and Alex brings him some supplies. Michael, whipping out his guitar, admits he doesn’t know why Alex is so nice to him. Michael explains he has chaos inside him and the only thing that makes him feel quiet is playing music.

Alex moves in for a kiss, but they don’t. Instead, Michael thanks him and continues playing.

Outside of the café Rosa’s car has been graffitied. “Go back to Mexico” and “crackhead” are written in paint, and eggs have been thrown at the windshield. Isobel arrives and Rosa blames the damage on Kate and Jasmine, her friends who are angry she stopped partying. Isobel volunteers to help her clean it up, but Rosa tells her she’s “too much” and runs back inside, saying she can’t handle the situation.

Max and Michael sit down for a meal at the café and discuss what’s going on with Isobel. Max thinks she’s having blackouts, and then changes the subject to reveal he wants to ask Liz out. He thinks they had a moment. They stop talking when they notice Liz and Rosa arguing over using the car. Liz accuses Rosa of being just like their mother, and Rosa storms out.

Max volunteers to take Liz out to the desert to do their project, but Liz suggests they go on an adventure instead.

The big adventure turns out to be beers in the desert. She used a fake ID to buy the beer and they make up stories as if they’re 25, the age on her fake license. Liz says she’s a dancer and Max decides he’s a writer. He then admits he wants to write something you can disappear into, something that “wraps you up when it’s cold.”

(The on-screen chemistry between Jeanine Mason and Nathan Dean Parsons is undeniable and electric.)

Liz shows him some dance moves and they stare into each other’s eyes again. They slow dance and listen to music, closing their eyes as they sway. Liz confesses she wants to kiss him, but it doesn’t feel right. They don’t have all summer as she’s off on a road trip right after graduation. She can’t kiss him and just leave. She doesn’t want to be like her mother.

Max asks her to stay, and Liz also doesn’t want to be the type of girl who changes her plans for a boy. Liz strokes Max’s face and admits their timing sucks. They smile, tease, flirt, and Max finally asks what about him changing his plans for her. He would do that for her, and they could see the ocean or the Grand Canyon or maybe even the Empire State Building.

Romance is also in the air elsewhere as Michael visits Alex and they kiss. They make it back to the tool shed and Michael reveals he’s never been with a guy before. They take it slow at first and then the passion and lust take over.

As they’re getting dressed, Alex’s dad barges in. He picks up a hammer and caresses it, warning his son that this ends now. Alex’s dad, Jesse, grabs Alex by the throat and Michael intervenes. Jesse turns his anger on Michael, slamming the hammer down on his hand.

After Max and Liz return that evening, he drops her off and leaves a note under her windshield wipers. Rosa catches him and warns him to stay away from her sister. She’s drunk and angry, and calls Isobel a mean girl. She thinks Max will leave and forget Liz, and so she pushes him and sends him away.

After Max leaves, Rosa grabs the note he left for Liz.

Michael’s in a great deal of pain as he sits in the driver’s seat of his truck, hand wrapped in a bandage and drinking alcohol to dull the throbbing. Suddenly his ears start ringing and he has a vision of Isobel alone in the desert. Max has the same vision.

Michael finds two girls dead in the desert and calls out for Isobel. He finds her in a cave holding her hand over Rosa’s mouth. Rosa drops to the ground, dead. Isobel tells Michael she did it because Rosa couldn’t be trusted.

Max arrives and Michael tells him he believes Isobel killed Rosa and the two other girls. Max freaks out and screams as Michael paces. He’s unable to heal Rosa, not quite strong enough to return her from the dead. Michael wants to call the police, but Max knows there’s something wrong with Isobel. Michael reminds him there’s evidence everywhere, and Max blames himself for not protecting Isobel and for leaving her alone. They need to cover up what she did.

Michael uses his powers to make all three bodies move on their own, inches above the ground, into Rosa’s car, with Rosa in the driver’s seat. Isobel arrives right after the girls are in place, and she has no idea what’s happened. Michael takes the blame, saying he couldn’t control his telekinesis and he accidentally killed them.

Max tries to send Isobel away, but she refuses to go. The siblings gather on the street as Michael turns the car on from hundreds of yards away and sends it speeding down the road. It passes them and they watch as it crashes.

Michael wants to leave immediately after the crash, but Isobel believes the crash isn’t enough. Max uses his powers to set the car on fire.

Back to 2019 and Max informs Liz that he and Michael changed their plans and stopped hanging out together after that night. They couldn’t bear to be around each other, but they did keep a watch over Isobel.

Liz, crying, asks why Isobel killed Rosa. Max admits they don’t know why. Liz can’t believe he allowed the town to think Rosa was drinking, crashed her car, and killed Jasmine and Kate. Liz yells at Max that he made her family a target of the town’s hatred following the crash and deaths. Max apologizes, saying he didn’t have any clue that would happen. He was scared and stupid, but Liz calls him brilliant. He covered up the murders for a decade.

Max reveals he tried to tell her a few days after it happened, but she was with her family. Liz pushes him away, telling Max she never wants to see him again. He destroyed her sister to save his own.

Elsewhere, Michael tries to convince Isobel she didn’t do it, that when she killed Rosa it was like she was a different person. Isobel wonders if killing is in their DNA. Are they just a murderous species who landed on Earth to kill people? Because Isobel just had another blackout, she believes it’s happening again. They need to face the truth.
