Coming off the excellent In Bruges, writer/director Martin McDonagh’s Seven Psychopaths had a lot to live up to. He brought back Colin Farrell and stuck to portraying a world that’s a bit seedier than the one most people live in. The comparisons generally end there, however.
Farrell plays a screenwriter looking for inspiration but drinking away his grip on everyday life. His best friend (Sam Rockwell) is in cahoots with Christopher Walken in a dog-napping enterprise which nets them the reward money distraught owners inevitably put up in order to be reunited with their furry friends. As fate (and McDonagh’s often all-too-clever script) would have it, they happen to steal the prized pooch of an unbalanced criminal (Woody Harrelson) who will go to any lengths to get his dog back.
Along the way, we’re introduced to characters that fill out the title billing and act as the basis for Farrell’s screenplay. It’s in the description and re-dramatization of these ancillary characters where the film shines, offering equal shades of bloody violence and unflinching comedy. However, unlike what the trailer may have you believe, the pacing of the movie is anything but brisk.
Despite a running time short of the two-hour mark, trudging through the meticulous layout of the story makes the experience feel much longer, and I even found my eyelids getting a bit heavy towards the end. It’s not that there aren’t some very funny moments, it’s that you’ve seen 75% of them in the trailer, and while awaiting another great exchange between Walken and Harrelson or hoping there’s another interesting character to grace the screen, watching Farrell’s character mope isn’t all that interesting. He’s a gifted actor but the script leaves him without much depth and on such a cliché development arc that there isn’t much satisfaction in seeing it play out.
Watching the film mainly had me wishing I’d re-watched In Bruges or another project McDonagh was a producer on, The Guard. Each of those delivers really fresh takes on the universe they inhabit and made for excellent cinema. The predominant emotion leaving the theater here was disappointment, and perhaps my expectations got the better of me.
Seven Psychopaths is almost like some weird mash-up of movies from the ’90s like True Romance, Pulp Fiction and The Usual Suspects. Yeah, you’d think that’s a compliment but trust me, it’s not. The whole movie feels dated and treads on territory that feels all too familiar. Walken’s performance and a few fun moments keep this from being a true waste of time, but justifying a $64 dollar movie ticket is hard to do. This one can easily wait for the movie channels.
GRADE: C
Seven Psychopaths hits theaters on October 12, 2012 and is rated R for strong violence, bloody images, pervasive language, sexuality/nudity and some drug use.

NBC’s Mockingbird Lane is either A) dead in the water, B) struggling to survive, or C) doing fine but needs some tweaking – depending on what day it is and who you choose to believe. Whatever its status, NBC has decided the best thing to do is send the pilot out into the world on Friday, October 26 at 8-9pm ET/PT. The network will follow the Mockingbird Lane pilot with a “La Llorona” Halloween episode of Grimm at 9pm.
Bryan Fuller (Heroes) executive produces Mockingbird Lane which is a reimagined version of The Munsters, the classic TV series from the 1960s. Executive producer Bryan Singer (X-Men, House) directed the first episode of the new series that promises to be darker in tone than the original goofy comedy series that inspired it.
The Mockingbird Lane cast includes Jerry O’Connell as Herman Munster, Portia de Rossi as his wife Lily, Eddie Izzard as Grandpa, Mason Cook as Eddie and Charity Wakefield as Marilyn.
Announcing the pilot screening date, Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment said, “This exciting new take on a memorable series will definitely blow out conventional wisdom and create its own legacy. Teaming this new show with a terrifying episode of Grimm makes the perfect pre-Halloween fright-fest.”
The Plot:
In Mockingbird Lane, sweet little Eddie Munster (Cook) is a normal kid about to enter the horrors of puberty. Truth is, he’s about to discover that for him becoming a teenager means growing hair in truly unexpected places — as in all over his body — every time the moon is full! Eddie’s got it pretty good though. His loving, supportive, run-of-the-mill family includes his mom Lily (de Rossi), the daughter of Dracula; his dad Herman (O’Connell), who brings new meaning to “Frankenstein”; and Grandpa (Izzard), who would give Dracula a run for his money if he weren’t actually Dracula! Of course then there’s creepy cousin Marilyn (Wakefield), who’s really the odd one because she’s so completely normal.
Buying a house these days is a nightmare, so Herman and Lily are shocked that no one scooped up the rambling Victorian mansion at 1313 Mockingbird Lane that was the site of a series of grisly hobo murders. Settling into their new place, they’re quickly onto the mission at hand: to gently ease Eddie into the reality of his werewolf adolescence. But it’s not always so easy to accept that your child is a little “different” from the rest of the kids. Meanwhile, Herman, who works as a funeral director, is suffering from a heart condition. Since he’s made up mostly of spare parts, he knew his makeshift heart would eventually give out. No worries though, because Grandpa, who is pretty good at procuring body parts, is on the case. All Herman cares about is finding a new heart with the same capacity to love Lily as much as he has for so many decades.
The CW could have a hit on their hands with the new DC comics-inspired series, Arrow, starring Stephen Amell, Colin Donnell, and Willa Holland. The show premiered on October 10, 2012 and scored the biggest audience of any CW series on any night over the past three years. 4.02 million viewers turned in to check out Arrow, making it the most watched premiere on the network since 2009’s debut of The Vampire Diaries.
Last year, The CW premiered H8R (remember that series? No? Me either) in the Wednesday at 8pm time slot. Filling that spot this year, Arrow more than doubled H8R‘s numbers. According to the network, it was up “57% in A18-34 (1.1/4) and 117% in A18-49 (1.3/4).”
Arrow also helped to bump up the audience of Supernatural which scored its most watched episode since October 15, 2010.
The CW’s debut of Arrow even tied NBC’s comedy block’s numbers in the 8-9pm hour.
The Plot:
After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides the truth about the man he’s become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was. Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow – a vigilante – to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory.
By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be – flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle – while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness. However, Laurel’s father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver’s own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on – and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine.

Made in Jersey has the (dis)honor of being the first series pulled off of the 2012-2013 television season. The show, which hasn’t officially been cancelled by CBS, stars Janet Montgomery as a street-smart Jersey Girl who works at a Manhattan law firm. The series didn’t catch on with viewers, attracting even less viewers than last year’s cancelled A Gifted Man during the same time slot.
CBS will be replacing Made in Jersey with new episodes of the reality series Undercover Boss. As of November 2, 2012, Undercover Boss returns for season four in the 8-9pm ET/PT time slot. The first episode will feature Mitchell B Modell, CEO of Modell’s Sporting Goods, as the boss undercover. Modell’s Sporting Goods is “America’s oldest family-owned-and-operated retailer of sporting goods, athletic footwear, active apparel and fan gear.”
Also donning a disguise and taking a job on the front line are:
– Tilted Kilt (Ron Lynch, President): Founded in 2003, Tilted Kilt is one of the fastest growing restaurant franchises in the nation with 65 restaurants across the U.S. The Celtic-themed sports pub and restaurant features servers wearing sexy tartan outfits.
– Cinnabon Inc. (Kat Cole, President): Cinnabon Inc., now synonymous with the cinnamon roll, is the most recognized sticky, gooey, sweet treat in America. These popular cinnamon rolls can be found in more than 770 franchised baked goods outlets.
CSI: NY will move to 9-10pm ET/PT beginning October 12, 2012.

More on The Hero [Courtesy of TNT]:
TNT‘s The Hero will bring 10 ordinary people together in a house and then assign them various missions that will test their brains, their brawn and even their morality. The show will challenge the competitors to prove they’ve got what it takes to be heroes, pushing them to the limits to see what they are willing (and able) to overcome, undergo or sacrifice for the sake of their fellow contestants.
Johnson will serve as The Hero‘s mentor and motivator, encouraging the contestants to reach far beyond their personal limits. In the end, one player will rise above the others, overcoming obstacles he/she never thought possible in order to become a true hero.
In a unique twist on the reality-competition format, The Hero will incorporate social media into every facet of the show, from pre-production and casting to on-location shooting and live broadcasts. Through the show’s interactive digital platform, viewers will be able to vote each week for the contestant they consider to be the most heroic. The series is set to premiere on TNT in summer 2013.
Per A+E, the new series will have the same elements as the US version but will feature “distinctly British items with rich, historical heritage.” Says Adam MacDonald, VP of Programming for A+E Networks UK: “Pawn Stars has developed a loyal audience and a huge fan base in the UK and internationally. The average audience has quadrupled since it first launched in the UK in January 2010. The producers are currently casting the UK version and we have high hopes that it will be equally as popular with our viewers.”
Brent Montgomery, Owner of Leftfield Pictures and Executive Producer of Pawn Stars, said, “There is such depth and richness in English history, that we felt marrying it with Pawn Stars was a natural extension of the brand. We are confident that viewers, not just in the UK, but in the US and internationally, will find a British iteration of the show to be fascinating and very entertaining.”
