Review: ‘Knock at the Cabin’ from M. Night Shyamalan

While enjoying a quiet vacation in their remote cabin in the woods, a family’s life is about to become a dreadful nightmare when four strangers come knocking in M. Night Shyamalan’s horror/thriller Knock at the Cabin.

The movie opens with a young girl named Wen (Kristen Cui) collecting grasshoppers just outside her family’s cabin. A large, imposing man named Leonard (Dave Bautista) walks out of the woods and begins talking to her. At first, Wen is shy and uneasy about talking to Leonard because he’s a stranger, but Wen starts to relax and chat with him when he shows her he’s very good at catching grasshoppers. Leonard tells Wen that his heart is breaking because of what he and his three companions must do and that she needs to convince her two dads to let them into the cabin.

Immediately frightened, Wen runs into the cabin and tells her two dads, Eric (Jonathan Groff) and Andrew (Ben Aldridge), about the man and that they need to make him go away.

Leonard and his three companions – Sabrina (Nikki Amuka-Bird), Ardiane (Abby Quinn), and Redmond (Rupert Grint) – begin knocking heavily at the cabin door, with Leonard telling Eric and Andrew that they must let them in because he has something significant to talk to them about. Wen’s two dads try the phones to call for help but discover the phone lines have been cut, and they have no cell service. It’s not long before Leonard and his comrades break into the cabin and tie Eric and Andrew to chairs while Wen cries and whimpers in fear.

Leonard tells them he and his comrades are not here to hurt them. Throughout history, families have been chosen to make the decision that they now face. “Your family must choose to willingly sacrifice one of the three of you to prevent the apocalypse,” says Leonard.

Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, Knock at the Cabin is a disturbing, gloomy, clunky apocalyptic thriller with little character development and even less suspense. Even worse, it’s missing Shyamalan’s signature style of clever foreshadowing and building tension.

Dave Bautista delivers the best performance in the film as Leonard, the physically intimidating leader of the four messengers of death. Leonard is actually a caring, desperate, and gentle soul who hates the horror he must put the family through but is determined to try and stop the apocalypse. The opening scene between Bautista and young Cui as Wen is the best scene in the movie.

The rest of the cast deliver solid performances, but their characters are never given any real depth or personality; they are all one-dimensional, uninteresting, and even boring.

Another big problem with the film is that it just keeps going down the Biblical End of Days rabbit hole, with the ending becoming painfully obvious and anti-climactic.

Missing any genuine suspense or engaging characters, Knock at the Cabin is a forgettable and disappointing addition to the lengthy list of films by M. Night Shyamalan.

‘Mayfair Witches’ Bewitches Audiences and Earns a Second Season Renewal

Mayfair Witches Episode 4

The only surprising thing about AMC’s announcement was that it took so long to confirm Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches has been renewed for season two. The popular supernatural series has been a hit on both AMC and AMC+, and its first season is now the most viewed on AMC+ over its first 30 days (per AMC Networks). That’s pretty impressive when you consider it was up against the final season of The Walking Dead.

Season one, which currently airs on Sundays at 9pm ET/PT, is ranked in the top 10 cable dramas of 2022-2023. Filming on season two is expected to kick off later this year in New Orleans.

“We are thrilled with the reaction to this series, especially in the wake of the incredibly strong reception to Interview, and can’t wait to bring the fans second seasons of both series in this rich, vibrant and expanding universe based on the works of Anne Rice,” said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. “In a business in which ‘nobody knows anything,’ we knew what we were hoping for in terms of building a television franchise around these remarkable characters and stories, and to see these shows arrive and captivate viewers in the way they have is so gratifying and energizing for everyone involved, and there is so much yet to come.”

The cast is led by Alexandra Daddario as Rowan Fielding. Jack Huston stars as Lasher, Tongayi Chirisa is Ciprien Grieve, and Harry Hamlin plays Cortland Mayfair. The first season also features Beth Grant as Carlotta, Hannah Alline as Suzanne, and Jen Richards as Jojo.

“The success of both Mayfair Witches and Interview with the Vampire once again illustrates the strength and mastery of Anne Rice’s work,” said Mark Johnson. “The fact that these first two shows are performing so splendidly with a TV audience gives us much pride in what we’ve already done and great anticipation for the storytelling opportunities yet to come.”

“Anne Rice’s Lives of the Mayfair Witches is a sumptuous epic tale that we’ve only begun to explore,” said Esta Spalding, showrunner and executive producer of Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches. “I’m so grateful to the fans and viewers of the show who’ve given us the chance to continue telling this story.”

The Plot:

The eight-episode series focuses on an intuitive young neurosurgeon, Rowan Fielding (Daddario), who discovers that she is the unlikely heir to a family of witches. As she grapples with her newfound powers, she must contend with a sinister presence that has haunted her family for generations.

The Plot:

Ghosts is a single-camera comedy about Samantha and Jay, a cheerful freelance journalist and up-and-coming chef from the city, respectively, who threw both caution and money to the wind when they decide to convert a huge rundown country estate they inherited into a bed & breakfast – only to find it was inhabited by the many spirits of deceased residents who now call it home. The departed souls are a close-knit, eclectic group that includes a saucy Prohibition-era lounge singer (Pinnock); a pompous 18th-century militiaman (Jones); a ‘60s hippie fond of hallucinogens (Carrasco); an overly upbeat ‘80s scout troop leader (Moriarty); a cod-obsessed Viking explorer from 1009 (Devon Chandler Long); a slick ‘90s finance bro (Grodman); a sarcastic and witty native from the 16th-century (Zaragoza); and a society woman and wife of a 19th-century robber baron who is Samantha’s ancestor (isocky), to name a few.

The opening of the B&B is a source of intrigue, anxiety, and curiosity among the spirits, but they’ll gladly put up with the commotion as long as they can continue to interact with a living inhabitant – Samantha.

The Plot:

Accused is a collection of 15 intense, topical, and exquisitely human stories of crime and punishment. Each episode is a fast-paced provocative thriller exploring a different crime, in a different city, with an entirely original cast. Based on the BBC’s BAFTA-winning crime anthology, each episode opens in a courtroom on the defendant, with viewers knowing nothing about their crime or how they ended up on trial.

Told from the defendant’s point of view through flashbacks, the show holds a mirror up to current times with evocative and emotional stories. In the end, audiences will discover how an ordinary person gets caught up in extraordinary circumstances and how one impulsive decision can impact the course of that life – and the lives of others – forever.

Alan Cumming served as host and producer on season one, and he’ll be back to guide the Traitors and the Faithfuls through challenges in season two.

The Traitors is an ambitious, highly addictive and spontaneous format that keeps contestants and viewers on their toes,” stated Corie Henson, EVP Entertainment Unscripted Content, NBCUniversal. “Alan Cumming is a well-dressed genius, the producers at Studio Lambert are brilliant storytellers, and the show is the perfect mix of drama and suspense to keep our Traitors and Faithfuls craving more.”

‘Black Snow’ Series Preview: The Cast, The Plot, and Trailer

Sundance Now and AMC+ have released the official trailer for Black Snow, a new six-part series premiering on February 23, 2023. Described as part whodunit and part coming-of-age drama, Black Snow stars Travis Fimmel (Raised By Wolves, Vikings) as a cold-case detective investigating a murder.

In addition to unveiling the official trailer, AMC+ and Sundance Now released a batch of photos ahead of the show’s two-episode premiere.

In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Fimmel described why Black Snow caught his interest.

“What intrigued me about him is that he’s a very flawed character. He’s got a lot of issues, childhood issues that he’s still dealing with, parental figures, and I think that’s the reason he became a cold-case detective,” said Fimmel. “There’s some stuff that unravels in the story that he went through that is very similar to the stuff that’s going on in the main storyline. I think it’s maybe cathartic for him to be doing what he’s doing, but at the same time it brings up a lot of painful memories.”

The crime drama’s cast also includes newcomers Talijah Blackman-Corowa, Jemmason Power, Molly Fatnowna, Eden Cassady, and Australian musician Ziggy Ramo. Brooke Satchwell (Poker Face), Alexander England (C*A*U*G*H*T), Erik Thomson (C*A*U*G*H*T), Kym Gyngell (No Activity), Rob Carlton (Bali 2002), Jimi Bani (Mabo), Daniela Farinacci (Total Control), and Lucy Bell (The Secrets She Keeps) also star.

Lucas Taylor (Harrow) created the series and writes along with Boyd Quakawoot (Black Comedy) and Beatrix Christian (Jindabyne). Sian Davies (The Gloaming) and Matthew Saville (Please Like Me) directed, and Lois Randall, Kaylene Butler, and Goalpost Pictures’ Rosemary Blight served as producers.

The Plot: Part coming-of-age drama and part whodunit, Black Snow follows the mystery of a small-town murder that rocked the Australian South Sea Islander community. In 1995, seventeen-year-old Isabel Baker was murdered. The crime shocked her tight-knit community and left the town devastated. The case was never solved, the killer never found. In 2020, the opening of a time capsule unearths a secret that puts cold-case detective James Cormack (Fimmel) on the trail of the killer.

Blue Bloods Series Description:

Blue Bloods is a drama about a multi-generational family of cops dedicated to New York City law enforcement. Frank Reagan is the New York Police Commissioner, and heads both the police force and the Reagan brood. He runs his department as diplomatically as he runs his family, even when dealing with the politics that plagued his unapologetically bold father, Henry, during his stint as chief.

A source of pride and concern for Frank is his eldest son, Danny, a seasoned detective, family man and Iraq War vet who on occasion uses dubious tactics to solve cases with his partner and new mother, Detective Maria Baez. Erin, the middle daughter, is a New York assistant D.A. who serves as the legal compass for her siblings and father, while also pursuing a run for district attorney. Jamie is the youngest Reagan, a Harvard Law graduate and the family’s golden boy.

Unable to deny the family tradition, Jamie decided to give up a lucrative future in law and follow in the family footsteps as a cop. He’s found a friend and ally in his wife, Eddie, who keeps him on his toes, and has very different reasons than the Reagans for joining the police force.
