Max’s Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episode two opens with Imogen (Bailee Madison) freaking out, thinking she is seeing things late at night while alone in her room. But it turns out nothing is there. From that spooky opening bit, we dive straight into summer school.

The First Day of Summer School

As the girls start summer school, the weather matches their gloomy mood. Their disdain for having to be there is obvious.

The girls discover they are all in the same class, except for poor Imogen. She’s having none of it when assigned to a different class, and deposits herself in the class with her friends. Unfortunately, the teacher isn’t up for her shenanigans and sends her to the “overflow” class. Apparently, “overflow” is where all the school’s bad kids are sent.

Imogen takes a seat and finds a rose in her desk.

A girl by the name of Jen (Ava Capri) walks into class and it appears she and Noa (Maia Reficco) know each other. Noa goes into the bathroom to say hi and we learn they met in juvie.

Imogen tells Dr. Sullivan (Annabeth Gish) during group therapy how unhappy she is that she’s not with her friends. All the girls complain, and the doctor suggests they have fun after school.

Imogen stays to talk to Dr. Sullivan about the medication she is taking. She thinks the drugs are making her see things. Her mom had a history of depression, so she believes that talking to her dad about her mom and the medication she was on will help.

Wes hires a new guy, Christian (Noah Alexander Gerry), to work at the theater and Tabby (Chandler Kinney) seems attracted to him. Also on the work front, Faran (Zaria) is working out when her coach offers her a lifeguard position.

Noa and Jen are catching up when Jen comes out and asks if she was a part of the Millwood massacre. Noa confirms she was.

Although they’ve been advised not to give out their phone numbers, multiple people are asking for them. The girls are reluctant but ultimately give out their numbers.

Imogen visits her dad, and he wonders what’s going on. She confesses she’s feeling a lot of anxiety and taking medication. He offers his home if she wants to spend some time away from everything.

Kelly (Mallory Bechtel) and Greg (Elias Kacavas) are back at her church, again, and Greg thinks it’s crazy. Kelly seems to have a rival, even in church. Sandy (Lilla Crawford) appears to be her latest nemesis.

Imogen applies for a job at a diner and lies about her name. Meanwhile, Noa confesses to Shawn (Alex Aiono) that her mom is still in rehab.

Imogen tells Tabby that she went to see her dad and that she got a job at a diner that happens to be near her dad’s house. Tabby talks about the new theater guy, Christian, and Imogen notices she’s looking at his Instagram. Imogen accidentally likes one of his old photos using Tabby’s account.

Kelly and Greg are practicing for the church play when he tries to take a kiss further. He’s clearly frustrated with her new lifestyle.

Mouse (Malia Pyles), who is now staying with her grandmother while her mom takes a cruise, finds a rose being held by a doll in her mom’s shop. When her grandma tries to use their computer, she sees the Spooky Spaghetti site. While closing the site, Mouse sees a “have you seen this person” post about teens Nick and Sabrina. She realizes they are the kids who were absent from her summer school class.

Tuesday

Mouse informs the girls about the teens who went missing after going to Bloody Rose Waters’ shack in the woods. They argue over whether Blood Rose is real, and Imogen’s shocked to learn they went to a creepy cabin without her. Minutes later, Noa finds a rose in her locker.

Faran tries out for lifeguard and in a race against Greg, she beats him.

Noa’s boss informs her that her friend Jen came by wanting a job. Noa says she doesn’t mind if he hires her.

Wes and Christian are arguing over zombie movies when Tabby jumps in and schools them. Wes tries to get Tabby to show Christian her film, describing her as the ultimate real-life final girl. She doesn’t want to and instead asks for time off to go with her friends to see Imogen at her new job.

The BFFs think it’s strange Imogen is going by her mom’s middle name at work. They also think it’s weird that her job is so far away. Imogen confesses she wants to be someone else where people don’t know her.

Imogen is alone at a bus stop at night when she sees Bloody Rose Waters in the woods. The bus pulls up just in time.

Mouse and Ash are suddenly awakened by her grandmother screaming. Grandma claims there was a woman outside her window looking in. Ash goes to investigate while grandma reveals that the woman was covered in bloody bandages.

Wednesday

Morning arrives, and Mouse’s grandma doesn’t seem to remember the night before at all. She claims she sleepwalks sometimes.

At school, Imogen’s friends notice she seems off. She’s back in their class and tells the teacher she belongs in this class with her friends. Imogen also declares that she’s not leaving.

The girls take Imogen out of class and ask what’s going on. Imogen confesses that she’s hallucinating; she is seeing Bloody Rose and her mom. She tells them about her encounter at the bus stop. Imogen breaks down and explains why she doesn’t want to be herself. She has been through a lot and just wants to escape her life. Imogen wants to be a girl who didn’t have a baby, who didn’t lose her mother, and who wasn’t attacked by a serial killer. Her friends tell her they love her and the love who she is now.

Imogen apologizes for having a psychotic breakdown during their hot girl summer.

Kelly finds out that she got the part of the Virgin Mary in the church play while her Greg got the part of pre-marital sex teens alongside her rival, Sandy.

Tabby has a change of heart and offers to show Christian her film. He talks her into showing it on the big screen and hosting a premiere. It’ll be the first time her friends and family have seen it together in a theater.

Faran has just discovered a rose in her gym bag when she’s interrupted by someone yelling Greg’s name. It’s her boyfriend, Henry (Ben Cook), and he’s come to confront Greg. After Greg uses homophobic slurs, Faran punches him in the nose. Her coach basically tells her not to let it happen again and lets her know she is going to be the captain. She swam circles around the other lifeguards.

Imogen visits Dr. Sullivan and wonders if she is a lost cause. The doctor thinks they should adjust her meds. Plus, she’ll get her moved into the same class as her friends.

Noa and Jen are reminiscing about juvie at work when Shawn walks in. She introduces him to Jen, and Jen insists she wouldn’t have survived juvie without Noa.

Faran offers to get Henry a job at the pool, but he won’t take it. It turns out that he can’t swim. However, Kelly has been contacting him about a part in a play at her church that he might be interested in.

Kelly confronts Greg about Sandy. She convinces him not to get with her rival.

The girls are wowed by the Orpheum’s marquee promoting Tabby’s film. They’re impressed with Christian’s thoughtfulness and think he must be crushing on Tabby.

They watch the film on the big screen and Christian says he loves it. (They’re the only ones in the theater.) The girls come up with excuses to leave so Christian can walk her home. As Tabby and Christian go through the theater closing duties, Tabby finds a rose. She mistakenly assumes it’s from Christian.

Imogen stops in at an ice cream shop, locally this time, and asks for an application. Johnny (Antonio Cipriano) hands her one and she introduces herself by her real name. She receives a call from an unknown caller, but she doesn’t answer.

As Tabby and Christian walk home, they bond over movies. She also receives a call from an unknown caller and doesn’t answer.

Faran too receives the call, but she doesn’t see it.

While Noa lies beside Shawn in bed, she has a flashback of cuddling with Jen in juvie. Her thoughts are interrupted by an unknown caller.

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episode two ends with a bang … or should I say with a stab. Sandy is angry that Greg stood her up for Kelly. She writes a vicious text telling Greg to enjoy his time cuddling with a fake virgin. Before she can get in her car, she’s stabbed to death by Bloody Rose.

Mouse’s cell rings with the unknown caller notification while she’s scrolling through Spooky Spaghetti. She doesn’t answer. Seconds later, she receives an invitation from Bloody Rose Waters to chat. Mouse accepts and a woman’s disguised voice threatens her. “Save your breath. You’ll need it.”

Proving romantic comedies are “in” again, Amazon MGM Studios announced a Red, White & Royal Blue sequel is in the works. Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You, Mary and George) and Taylor Zakhar Perez (The Kissing Booth 2 and 3) are attached to reprise their roles as Prince Henry and Alex Claremont-Diaz.

Details, including the official title, are being kept under wraps.

Matthew López returns as screenwriter, and Red, White & Royal Blue author Casey McQuiston is also confirmed to write the sequel. López and Berlanti Schechter Films’ Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Michael McGrath are producing. Author McQuiston is executive producing.

The first film, released on August 11, 2023, ranks as one of the top three most-watched romantic comedies on Prime Video.

“Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the son of the first woman President of the United States (Uma Thurman), and Britain’s Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine) have a lot in common: stunning good looks, undeniable charisma, international popularity…and a total disdain for each other. Separated by an ocean, their long-running feud hasn’t really been an issue, until a disastrous—and very public—altercation at a royal event becomes tabloid fodder driving a potential wedge in U.S./British relations at the worst possible time,” reads the original film’s synopsis.

“Going into damage control mode, their powerful families and respective handlers force the two rivals into a staged truce. But as Alex and Henry’s icy relationship unexpectedly begins to thaw into a tentative friendship, the friction that existed between them sparks something deeper than they ever expected.”

The original film also starred Clifton Collins Jr., Sarah Shahi, Rachel Hilson, and Stephen Fry. Ellie Bamber, Thomas Flynn, Malcolm Atobrah, Akshay Khanna, Sharon D Clarke, Aneesh Sheth, and Juan Castano were also part of the ensemble of the LGBTQ love story.

‘Sugar’ Episode 7 Recap: “The Friends You Keep”

Sugar Episode 7 Recap
Colin Farrell and Amy Ryan in ‘Sugar’ episode 7 (Photo Credit: Apple TV+)

Apple TV+’s Sugar episode six revealed John Sugar’s secret and it was, literally, out of this world. Episode seven discloses a bit more about Sugar and his associates, including that they need to do more than just call home at this point.

Now that we know John Sugar’s true identity, watching Ruby (Kirby) open the typewriter in her secret room as episode seven begins takes on a whole new meaning. She sends a message to her home planet, with Miller (Paul Schulze) observing as she types. The reply tells Miller to bring John in, and Ruby hopes he’ll come peacefully.

John (Colin Farrell) wakes on the floor by the hotel room’s bed and Melanie (Amy Ryan) is concerned he was talking in an unfamiliar language in his sleep. He claims he’s feeling better, but Melanie refuses to leave his side except to fetch a coffee.

John confesses to himself that he wants to tell her everything but can’t.

Elsewhere, David Siegel’s funeral is attended by his family and few others. Jonathan (James Cromwell) expresses sadness over outliving his grandson and extends sympathy to his son, Bernie (Dennis Boutsikaris). Neither has heard from Olivia, and Bernie’s genuinely concerned. She wouldn’t have missed David’s service unless she was in trouble. Jonathan remains convinced that something happened to her.

And, finally, we get our first look at Olivia (Sydney Chandler) that isn’t just a social media post. She’s being held in a small, dark room under a set of stairs, and she’s shown warning her captor not to touch her. Her captor signals for her to stand up.

Back at the hotel, John hears Moss’s phone buzzing and scrolls through messages about himself and Stallings. Someone’s busy looking for Moss.

Melanie returns with coffee and asks about Djen, the woman John called out to in his dream. John admits she’s his sister, but quickly shushes Melanie when he hears movement outside. It’s Miller, but John doesn’t want to open the door. Miller and two associates bust in, but it appears John and Melanie have escaped through a window. Miller looks around and sees lots of blood in the bathtub. He also finds John’s medical kit with his special alien drugs that allow him to go home.

Miller notices a door to a connecting room and correctly assumes that’s where John and Melanie are hiding, much to the shock of the room’s occupants. Miller grabs John by the neck and lifts him into the air with just one arm. (That confirms Miller is also alien, in case there were lingering doubts.)

Melanie reacts by hitting Miller on the head with a towel rack and freeing Sugar. John runs after Melanie to the car while wondering why Miller attacked him. Miller’s his boss and they’re supposed to be on good terms.

They drive a short distance and John has Melanie pull over. John rips off a tracking device on the car and they take off, not stopping until they reach a parking garage. Melanie’s worried the man she hit is dead, but John assures her he’s fine. She demands real answers and John explains they work together, but not as private investigators. His associates all have their own day jobs.

John insists he can’t tell her more, other than that they’re all members of a secret organization. It’s just too dangerous to explain further. However, he confesses he wants to tell her everything but can’t. Melanie is convinced that he works as a foreign spy. John replies, “We’re just here to observe. That’s our mission. That’s our only mission.”

John figures out Miller will be after Henry next, which means they need to get to the university ASAP.

Unfortunately, Henry (Jason Butler Harner) is delivering a lecture and not answering his phone. He finally checks it once class is over, and he’s gone before John and Melanie burst into his classroom.

John realizes someone is grabbing everyone connected to Stallings. That means their next stop should be Moss’s place. As they head there, John tells Melanie that his people are trying to stop him from finding Olivia. However, they aren’t responsible for her abduction.

Melanie agrees to stay in the car when they pull up in front of Moss’s house. But naturally, she doesn’t stay put and follows him inside the house. They make their way through the place and discover Moss’s dead body in the kitchen.

John drops Melanie back at his real hotel room and asks that she stay there with very good boy Wiley. John swears he won’t return without Olivia.

Night falls, and John promises himself tonight he’ll get the answers he’s looking for. He doesn’t understand why Moss was killed; they are not supposed to hurt people – even lowlifes. They’re only on this planet to “preserve their peaceful way of life.” Unfortunately, Earth is changing them.

John joins his fellow aliens for a meeting he wasn’t invited to and learns the mission is over. Ruby informs him they got word that morning, which is why Miller was looking for him. John’s shocked since their mission isn’t supposed to be complete yet, but now Ruby says they’re heading home in a day or two.

John swears he won’t leave without finding Olivia, despite what Ruby claims. He’s frustrated and angry, and yells at his associates. Miller reminds him Olivia isn’t the mission, but John won’t give up. Henry pulls him aside and hands him the address where Olivia’s being held. He also confirms that some powerful humans found out about them, and the aliens have been protecting them so as not to be exposed.

“They can exterminate us at any time if they want to,” insists Henry. The address is to the home of a politician’s son who was a client of Stallings. Henry claims not to know how humans realized they are aliens. But John still has time to rescue Olivia before they return to their home planet.

Before their conversation ends, Henry gets John to admit he killed three humans at Stallings’ house. He also gets John to admit the first two kills were self-defense, but the third man was because he was angry. John’s still not sure murdering Stallings was justified. He confesses he killed him because he felt like it.

Henry says he hopes John can find Olivia. However, without Djen, John will always be lost.

Sugar episode 7 recap

John leaves, now understanding his associates are being blackmailed. They need him to back off or else they’ll be exposed. John’s able to admit to himself that being outed as an alien would be disastrous. He also admits that they’ve stayed too long on this planet.

John arrives at the address and a sign on the lawn reads: Vote Pavich U.S. Senate “On Your Side.” He’s undeterred and climbs in through a window. The house seems empty, and he uses a flashlight to look around. Suddenly, a security guard yells, “Freeze,” and tases John as John attempts to explain he’s a private investigator. The security guard puts John in the back of his car as John continues to explain what he was doing inside the house. The guard doesn’t care until John insists a woman is being tortured inside the house.

They head inside, and the guard looks around as John remains cuffed and seated on the couch. While the guard’s calling out to anyone home, John sees a campaign poster with the guard’s face on it. The guard is the senator’s son, Ryan.

Ryan returns with a hammer, and then nonchalantly grabs a drink out of the fridge. He drops the charade and demands to know who told him about the girl in the basement. John remains calm while Ryan threatens him with the hammer. John reacts by kicking him and knocking him down. He works his hands in front of him and they fight, with Ryan’s gun landing a short distance away. They reach it simultaneously, but John immediately gains the upper hand.

John wants to just call it a day, but Ryan understands what comes next. He pulls the trigger and kills himself. John retrieves the handcuff keys and then carefully enters the basement. He’s shocked to discover walls lined with torture instruments and a shower stall with a hook installed above it. There’s also a table with straps.

More importantly, there are dozens of numbered CDs. The most recent, #44, is open on the table next to a microphone.

John spots a lock on a cabinet under the stairs and breaks it open. The episode ends with John raising the lid and saying, “Olivia.”

‘Pretty Little Liars: Summer School’ Episode 1 Recap: “Spookyspaghetti.com”

Pretty Little Liars Summer School Cast

After a creepy – and scary – “who done it” first Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin season, the PLL gang returns for season two of the Max series with Pretty Little Liars: Summer School. The new season kicked off on May 9, 2024 with an episode that opens with multiple murders and A on trial.

And now, let’s take a look at what happened on “Spookysphaghetti.com.”

Christmas Morning

Imogen (Bailee Madison) and Tabby (Chandler Kinney) are exchanging gifts when a hysterical Kelly (Mallory Bechtel) calls Imogen to inform her that her dad and Chip are dead. A (Archie Waters’ nickname) stabbed them after escaping from the mental hospital.

As the girls and their families gather, they question the police about what they should be doing. The gang has their own powwow on what they think A is up to. They conclude A’s killing off his loose ends. As they all come up with who they think A will go after, we see Faran’s (Zaria) dance teacher being murdered. We’re also treated to a look at Mouse’s (Malia Pyles) weird friend Steve’s getting his throat slashed, and Noa’s mom’s old boyfriend’s dead body.

New Year’s Eve

Imogen and Tabby think A will visit Angela Water’s grave on the anniversary of her death. They’re correct, and the cops catch him. The girls receive word that A is in custody.

Six Months Later – The Last Week of School

The girls take part in a group therapy session. Dr. Sullivan (Annabeth Gish) asks what they are afraid of, and of course it’s that Archie will get off because he’s insane. The jury hasn’t returned a verdict yet.

The BFFs go out to eat and can’t help but wonder why the verdict on A’s trial is taking so long. Tabby receives an email that her short horror film starring Imogen did not get into a film festival, and Mouse suggests she post it online. She even volunteers to link to it from a site called Spooky Spaghetti. Imogen believes the film deserves to be seen since it exposes what Chip did to them. Tabby agrees and posts it while they’re still at lunch.

Mouse and Ash (Jordan Gonzalez) check out the Spooky Spaghetti site, while Noa (Maia Reficco) gets hot and heavy with her boyfriend, Shawn, after sneaking into his room. Meanwhile, Imogen has a nightmare of A holding her baby.

Tuesday

Imogen gets caught delivering gifts to a gay couple who’ve adopted her baby. She does this a lot, and they ask her to stop coming around.

Elsewhere, Faran has gotten the all-clear to dance again, but for some reason she isn’t telling Henry that she has.

Mouse has become obsessed with scrolling through Spooky Spaghetti and brings the girls in to show them that someone posted all their pictures and names. (Their names have never been public before because they are minors.) They also posted photos of Bloody Rose Waters, the mentally unstable mother of Angela and A. She’s pictured lurking in areas each girl has a connection to. Tabby suspects that someone photoshopped them. Noa wonders why she’s called Bloody Rose Waters and Mouse explains that legend has it he skinned his mother for keeping him locked in a cage for all those years.

Mouse says there’s also a legend going around that if you look into a mirror that Angela once looked into at 12:01am and say Bloody Rose Waters five times, she will appear. Of course Imogen wants to give it a go.

Tabby and her co-worker Wes are talking about her film when Chip’s (the rapist from season one) mother shows up calling her movie disgusting. She tries to shame Tabby, claiming she’s trying to destroy Chip in death. She accuses Tabby of lying about Chip raping her and Imogen, and threatens to sue her if she doesn’t take the film down within twenty-four hours.

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episode 1

Imogen and Tabby’s mom visit Imogen’s mom’s grave. Tabby’s mom reveals she thinks she found a long-term renter for the house that once belonged to Imogen and her mother. However, she came across something troubling. She discovered the supplies that Imogen has been hiding and then leaving for her baby she gave up for adoption months ago. She’s worried and made an appointment for Imogen to see Dr. Sullivan alone.

Tabby is watching her film when she reads comments calling her and Imogen liars. Instead of taking the film down, she makes it private.

Later, the girls return to school at night and attempt to summon Bloody Rose Waters. (Because that sounds like a good idea, right? Sarcasm.)

Wednesday

Dr. Sullivan asks Imogen if she is taking her medication, and Imogen admits she’s not. She needs to be ready when Archie comes back for her. Imogen confesses to being worried Archie will come after her baby, too. Dr. Sullivan thinks there’s more to it than that. Ezra and Aria (from the original Pretty Little Liars) were going to adopt her baby and Dr. Sullivan thinks she changed her mind because they lived too far away.

Imogen doesn’t know what Archie is capable of. The doctor suggests that if she’s so afraid of A, then she should stop going to the baby’s house.

Imogen leaves one last gift with a note saying it’s from her grandmother.

Ash catches Mouse on the Spooky Spaghetti site and is concerned she’s on the site too much. He wants to do something fun, like a date, instead.

Wes shows Tabby an essay Chip’s mom wrote in the newspaper about her grief. Wes thinks Tabby should show her some compassion.

Faran and her mom run into Kelly’s mom and find out Kelly is at a Catholic church. Kelly is now remote learning, and she’s found comfort in going to church.

A short while later, Faran pays Kelly a visit and Kelly insists she is doing good. The church community has gotten her through the darkness. Faran wants Kelly to dance with Henry and comes clean that her doctor has cleared her to dance, but she isn’t ready to do that yet. Kelly promises to pray for her but won’t dance with Henry.

Tabby reads what Chip’s mom wrote in the paper out loud to Dr. Sullivan. She’s angry that she is being accused of lying and that Chip seems like the victim. She’s also pissed that she can’t release her movie. Dr. Sullivan tells Tabby to write about it to get her anger out.

Mouse receives an alert on Spooky Spaghetti about Bloody Rose Waters’ cabin being found in the woods. She lies and cancels her date with Ash.

It seems that Noa’s welcome has worn out at her boyfriend’s house. Shawn’s mom makes a pointed jab at her about not paying rent for the last six months, and Noa reacts by saying her mom is getting out of rehab. She’ll be moving back home tomorrow.

Tabby shows Imogen the article and confesses she wishes she would have done to Chip what the principal and A wanted her to do … carve an A in Chip’s chest.

Kelly is making out with Greg when she stops to pray to get over her temptations. She thinks she can make a believer out of Greg.

Mouse, Noa, and Faran head off in the dead of night to find Bloody Rose Water’s cabin. They find it and briefly freak out when Ash shows up. Ash confesses he put it together when Mouse blew him off.

Ash and Mouse talk it out at a restaurant, and she confesses she’s worried he is going to break up with her. Ash assures her he won’t but asks if she can lay off Spooky Spaghetti a little.

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episode 1 Recap

Thursday

The verdict is in and Archie Waters receives the death penalty. The girls are with Dr. Sullivan when they hear the news, and she hopes it comforts them some. Even with the verdict in and A locked away, the girls agree that it’s best if they stick with group therapy.

The girls are sun tanning when Noa says she is staying at her mom’s place by herself. The girls are talking about their favorite summer movie when Imogen proclaims it’s going to be the best summer ever.

Tabby reveals she took Dr. Sullivan’s advice and put her anger into words. A quick shot shows Chip’s mom arriving at his headstone which now has “Rapist” spray-painted on it in large letters.

The Last Day of School

Noa lied and her mom won’t be returning from rehab until the end of the summer. Until then, she has the apartment to herself. Which means the girls have a place to hang out all summer without adult supervision.

Reality hits the BFFs when they’re informed they have missed too much school. Their grades dropped and therefore they need to attend summer school. Otherwise, they won’t advance to their junior year.

The episode ends with a teen couple sneaking around inside Bloody Rose Waters’ cabin. Hormones get the best of them, and they start making out in the creepy cabin. Cue Bloody Rose Waters and the teens being stabbed to death.

From Emmy Award winner Dick Wolf and the team behind the Law & Order brand, FBI is a fast-paced drama about the inner workings of the New York office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This elite unit brings to bear all their talents, intellect, and technical expertise on major cases in order to keep New York and the country safe.

Born into a multigenerational law enforcement family, Special Agent Maggie Bell commits deeply to the people she works with as well as those she protects. Her partner is Special Agent Omar Adom “OA” Zidan, a West Point graduate via Bushwick who spent two years undercover for the DEA before being cherry-picked by the FBI. Overseeing them is Special Agent in Charge Isobel Castille, who operates under intense pressure and has undeniable command authority.

The team also includes Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jubal Valentine, the nerve center of the office whose ability to easily relate to and engage with both superiors and subordinates makes him a master motivator. The smart and outspoken Special Agent Tiffany Wallace, who spent six years with the NYPD, is partner to Special Agent Stuart Scola, an Ivy League-educated Wall Streeter-turned-FBI agent. These first-class agents tenaciously investigate cases of tremendous magnitude, including terrorism, organized crime, and counterintelligence.

‘I Saw the TV Glow’ Review – A Quirky Coming-of-Age Tale

I Saw the TV Glow
Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine in ‘I Saw the TV Glow’ (Photo Credit: A24)

Writer/director Jane Schoenbrun first built themself a reputation with their unauthorized YouTube Slenderman collection A Self-Induced Hallucination in 2018. In 2021, they became one-to-watch in the horror genre with their trippy festival darling We’re All Going to the World’s Fair. Now, the watching can continue with Schoenbrun’s second official feature, I Saw the TV Glow.

I Saw the TV Glow is set mostly in the late nineties/early aughts, the days of tube televisions and tape VCRs. Two teenage students named Owen (Justice Smith from Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Jurassic World Dominion) and Maddie (Bill & Ted Face the Music’s Brigette Lundy-Paine) bond over their obsession with a paranormal television show called The Pink Opaque. When the show is canceled, Maddie mysteriously disappears. As time goes on, Owen wonders if The Pink Opaque was more than just a TV show.

So, essentially, I Saw the TV Glow is a quirky little coming-of-age tale, following Owen through the years as he tries to make sense of what might have happened to Maddie and how The Pink Opaque may be involved. The mystery unravels, and it’s a very compelling one. And as the film reveals its secrets, it’s intriguing. It grabs a hold of the audience and doesn’t let go.

From a narrative standpoint, I Saw the TV Glow is more accessible than We’re All Going to the World’s Fair. This doesn’t mean that it’s got a formulaic plot or anything like that, just that there is a semi-coherent story to it. Although Owen does break the fourth wall to narrate more than a few times, I Saw the TV Glow is not put together in the same voyeuristic, found-footage type of way as Schoenbrun’s earlier movies. It’s a more standard narrative, so it’s easier to follow. Or, at least, it’s as easy to follow as a Schoenbrun film is apt to get.

Stylistically, I Saw the TV Glow is absolutely a Jane Schoenbrun film. It’s visually stunning. Its imagery is simultaneously bathed in neon and shrouded in shadows, and the framing of the shots forces the viewer to wonder if they are, in fact, looking where they’re supposed to be looking. The sound evokes an eerie stillness, and the music, both the score and the diegetic soundtrack, helps reinforce the teenage dream landscape of the in-movie universe. Schoenbrun builds a hallucinatory fantasy world that lives right on the border of reality.

Although some of the ideas in I Saw the TV Glow are creepy and unsettling, it’s a bit of a stretch to call it scary. It’s one of those horror movies that disturbs its audience more than it terrifies it. It doesn’t let the viewer relax out of fear of possibly missing something crucial. There are no cheap jump scares, because there are no jump scares at all. It’s all built on atmosphere and dread. A mood movie.

Without spoiling the ending (partially because there’s not much to spoil), I Saw the TV Glow doesn’t quite stick the landing. All of the unfolding and recounting of the mystery is kind of wasted by a strange, Cronenberg-lite conclusion that may or may not be actually happening. It ends just as unceremoniously and unsatisfyingly as the character’s beloved TV show did. And maybe that’s the point? Who knows. Ambiguity also could just be a Jane Schoenbrun trademark.

It’s safe to say that Jane Schoenbrun is unlike any other filmmaker working today. Their work is exciting in its creativity, and while things may not always work, they aren’t afraid to take risks, and the attempt is what is most admirable. And honestly, I Saw the TV Glow comes pretty darn close to working. Which means that Jane Schoenbrun will remain on the one-to-watch list, at least for the near future.
