‘Cruel Summer’ Season 2 Episode 10 Recap: “Endgame” Season Finale

Cruel Summer Season 2 Episode 10 Finale Recap
Lexi Underwood and Sadie Stanley in ‘Cruel Summer’ season 2 episode 10 (Freeform/Justine Yeung)

Freeform’s Cruel Summer season two episode 10 – the season finale – puts an end to all the whodunnit guessing games. Luke’s killer is revealed but, as with the first season, not all the loose ends are tied up.

It’s 4am on New Year’s Day when Megan (Sadie Stanley) and Isabella (Lexi Underwood) return home. Megan wants to go back and untie Luke, but Isabella doesn’t agree. Although he’s been tied up for hours, she seems to think they let him off easy. Megan reminds Isabella that she shot him, and Isabella maintains it was an accident.

Megan decides she’s going to wait until 8am and then head to the cabin to untie Luke.

At 5:00am, Luke (Griffin Gluck) has made it to the docks which is where we last saw him in episode nine. The mysterious person who Luke paged is none other than his brother, Brent (Braeden De La Garza).

A couple of hours later, Steve Chambers (Paul Adelstein) wakes up to water all over the floor. He finds a soaking wet Brent, crying. Brent tells his dad there’s something he needs to tell him. We don’t hear their conversation, but it results in Steve running to the docks screaming Luke’s name.

The girls show up and discover that Luke is gone and begin to search the woods. Isabella accuses Megan of untying Luke before she left the night before. Megan claims she didn’t. Megan realizes they need to find him before someone else does.

Their search is unsuccessful, so Megan calls the hospital and learns there’s no one there matching his description. She also hacks into the 9-1-1 call center, and nothing came in about him. Megan’s very worried about Luke but Isabella’s more concerned about destroying the videotape of what took place at the cabin.

While Megan worries, Isabella can’t believe Megan’s starting to forgive him and points out all that he’s done. Megan counters by pointing out that Isabella isn’t blameless. After all, she lied about sleeping with Luke. Megan admits she doesn’t know how she’s ever going to trust Isabella again.

January 3, 2000: Brent’s concerned about what to do, and Steve’s trying to figure out a way to fix whatever happened. Before Brent can elaborate, Steve stops him and assures him that he won’t let anything happen to him.

Steve asks Megan if Luke was mixed up in anything, and she says no. He confirms that he and Luke fought about Luke wanting to go into the Coast Guard.

Megan informs Isabella that Steve’s asking questions and that Sheriff Myer will be getting involved. Isabella’s eerily calm about the whole situation. As they consider that Luke ran away, they have no clue that Brent and Steve already know what happened to him.

Megan sends multiple Instant Messages to Luke, begging him to let her know he’s okay. She thinks the pills they added to Luke’s drink were a bad idea. Isabella reminds her that they did this together.

Megan can’t believe that she let Isabella talk her into this. Megan and Isabella argue, and Isabella continues to insist that this is all Luke’s fault. Isabella wants Megan to stop defending him and calls Megan ungrateful, seeming to believe she made Megan’s life better. Megan thinks Luke was right and that Isabella is only happy when Megan is miserable.

Before walking away, Megan tosses out, “I wish I never met you.”

Summer arrives and Steve demands to know why Sheriff Myer (Sean Blakemore) hasn’t formally charged Megan and Isabella for Luke’s murder. Myer explains that they received footage from Ned’s surveillance camera from that night in hopes of finding more evidence. Steve looks worried for a brief moment and tries to play it off, claiming that Myer’s trying to solve a case based on “that lunatic.”

Brent visits Megan and subtly tries to bring up that she and Isabella were brought in for more questioning. She admits that Myer thinks she and Isabella killed Luke but there’s no evidence – because they didn’t kill him.

It was Isabella’s idea for them to blame each other for Luke’s murder and somehow it worked. Neither has been charged with murder. Suddenly, Megan has an epiphany about the footage from Ned’s place. It will not only show Megan and Isabella, but it will also show who came later and killed Luke!

Megan hacks into the police station’s computer, and the girls watch the footage from that night. They see Steve’s car drive up to the cabin.

Armed with this discovery, Megan and Isabella barge into Steve’s office and confront him. He claims he was at home and turns the tables on Isabella, saying his private investigator found out her friends seem to have a habit of dying.

Isabella doesn’t think they shouldn’t tell the sheriff about the footage since they’re seen on it too. Isabella turns it into a weird moment by stating that the last few days felt like old times when they got along. Megan finds it odd that Isabella talks about their friendship like it’s something magical.

Meanwhile, Brent’s having a meltdown in his dad’s office about possibly going to jail if whatever happened comes to light. His dad slaps him and orders his son to pull himself together.

Megan tries to see Isabella, but she’s checked out of her hotel room.

Megan’s forced to return to the station, and Sheriff Myer plays an edited video of Megan holding the gun the night Luke was murdered. Conveniently, Isabella can’t be seen on the video at all, and Megan’s arrested for Luke’s murder.

Cruel Summer Season 2 Episode 10 Finale Recap
Braeden De La Garza and Sadie Stanley in ‘Cruel Summer’ season 2 episode 10 (Freeform/Justine Yeung)

Steve’s told about Megan’s arrest, and Brent becomes upset. We finally hear him confess that he killed Luke! Steve thinks Megan’s arrest is Brent’s ticket out. Brent can’t believe Steve would do this to Megan and her mom, and Steve insists his son should be grateful.

Brent needs to know if, when his mom died, she was drunk and if that’s what caused the accident and Luke had to take the blame. Steve’s cold about it when confirms that she was gone and he didn’t want her remembered that way.

Brent visits Megan at the jail and confesses what happened that night. The audience is treated to a flashback of that night, and we’re shown what transpired between the brothers.

In the flashback, Luke confesses to his brother everything that he’s done, even admitting that when he played the sex tape at their Christmas party, he thought it was one of Brent’s. That upsets Brent, and then Luke brings up what happened to their mom. At the time of this confrontation, Brent had no idea that their mom was drunk.

Brent shoves Luke, and he hits his head before falling into the water. Brent dives in after him to try and save him.

Back to the present day in the interrogation room, Brent admits that his dad was trying to cover it up and trying to place the blame on anyone else. Brent also confesses to planting Isabella’s money and bag in the cabin.

Sheriff Myer is listening to this entire conversation.

Brent refuses to let Megan take the fall for it. His parting words to her are, “Luke really loved you.”

Steve’s home alone when the police show up.

Megan, no longer in custody, receives an Instant Message from Ned. He’s got an old colleague in Palo Alto looking for a coder, and he gave the person Megan’s number.

Isabella has left for good, hopping on a plane to Ibiza. She chats with a young woman on the plane, and it appears she’s found a new person to get her hooks into. Isabella introduces herself as Lisa.

Season two ends with a tantalizing tease and a shocking conclusion that some viewers might have seen a version of coming. Megan heads down to the docks to say her final goodbyes to Luke. Suddenly, her attention’s drawn to a spot in the woods where the sun’s reflecting off something. It’s a camera pointed right at the docks, and we are back to the night of Luke’s death.

Luke made it to the shore but was still partially in the water. Isabella is seen standing over him. She placed her foot on Luke’s head, drowning him in the shallow water before pushing his lifeless body back into the lake to float away.

Megan watches the footage, shocked and in tears.

‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’ Director Jeff Rowe Talks Turtles

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem writer/director Jeff Rowe is a lifelong Turtles fan. “Like, I have thoughts that I remember. Like, knowing how to think – and then I remember loving the Ninja Turtles. They’re just married together,” joked Rowe during Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies’ 2023 San Diego Comic-Con panel in Hall H.

Rowe’s vision for the 2023 theatrical film sprang from concentrating on the “Teenage” portion of TMNT. “It really started with focusing on the teenage part, which, in early conversations with Seth [Rogen], always felt like the most underserved of the four descriptors,” said Rowe. “And we wanted to cast actual teenagers and create something that felt authentic. And then we decided to reflect that in the art style.”

That desire to adopt a different style of animation for the new TMNT project was accomplished with CG animation that looks less perfect and precise.

“We looked at the way we used to draw when we were in high school when you’re like so passionate and you just don’t know how to draw, but you don’t know that you don’t know how to draw yet,” explained Rowe. “So, you know, like you’ll lovingly draw a hand and like every fingernail and every wrinkle on the knuckle – but the hand is horribly misshapen.”

Rowe added: “There’s no formal art training to encumber your pure expression. And then we’re like, ‘Let’s do that. Let’s make the movie look like that.’”

An early piece of concept art featuring two characters convinced Rowe this approach might actually work. “There’s an early drawing of Bebop and Rocksteady that I’m just like, ‘I have not seen characters in animated films look like this before. If we could pull this off, it would be really, really exciting.’”

Rowe joked that they tried and failed for many years before nailing the visuals.

Writer/director Rowe earned a hearty round of applause from TMNT fans attending the SDCC panel when the discussion turned to his entry into the franchise.

“I guess the other thing is when I think back, so much of my love of Ninja Turtles…I love the live-action movies, I love the show…but the toys are really how I connected with it. I spent a lot of time with those toys. They’re so inventive. They were such wonderful designs with so much work put into them. And they were weird. They were gross sometimes. And we were like, ‘We should let this movie be as gross and as weird as that whole bevy of stuff in the early ‘90s that kind of shaped my taste and childhood.’”

The actors who lend their voices to the Turtles – Nicolas Cantu as Leonardo, Brady Noon as Raphael, Micah Abbey as Donatello, and Shamon Brown Jr. as Michelangelo – recorded together. That’s highly unusual, and while it lent authenticity to their interactions, it wasn’t necessarily ideal from an audio recording standpoint.

“It’s awful! It’s a horrible thing!” said Rowe, laughing. “No, it’s really bad for sound because everybody just talks over each other. But you we got all four kids together, and we went in with a script. We had this idea of like, ‘Okay, this is the joke that the teens will say, and they’ll sound like teenagers.’ And it felt alien and weird because Seth and I are not teenagers.

So we immediately threw the script out and would just have them improv everything. It would be like, ‘How do you say that? How would you say that? How would you express this to your brother? Talk about a YouTube video that you saw.’

They would say tons of things, and we’d have to fact-check them to make sure it wasn’t like super offensive or some code that we didn’t understand yet. But so much of the banter between the Turtles just came from recording the ensemble, and then also letting the tape roll in-between takes and just hearing them talk about their day and then editing it into the film.”

Rowe also touched on the score of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem during the panel, confessing he never imagined they’d be able to bring two-time Oscar winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (Soul, The Social Network) on board.

“I love the score in this film. I don’t know why they said yes to doing this. I still don’t believe it. But they were so wonderful and collaborative. They were like, ‘We think the score should sound like a garage rock band or something.’”

Rowe continued: “They really embraced the film. It’s really beautiful at points and emotional, and also really exhilarating. It was very exciting to work with them.”

The panel included a special surprise guest who’s familiar to any Turtles fan. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman joined Jeff Rowe on the panel and showered praise on the latest adaptation of TMNT.

“I’m so excited. I’m so proud of what you guys have done. This movie is brilliant on every level,” said Eastman immediately after taking a seat next to Jeff Rowe. “When you first showed me footage, 15 minutes in I go, ‘When are you starting the sequel?’ But, no, I look at it and just the way it’s come to life, it reminds me a lot of the underground comics style that Peter [Laird] and I started with the project. It just has so much life and energy and weight. It’s beautiful.”

Kevin Eastman is a regular at the San Diego Comic-Con, and 2023 marks his 38th year attending the Con. Eastman and Laird first came to SDCC way back in 1985 when the organizers were hoping for 7,000 attendees. That number’s dwarfed now, with 130,000 attendees.

Eastman loves being among TMNT fans. “It’s a chance for me to say thank you for giving me such a great life, such a great job. Almost 40 years later, I’m still drawing Turtles, thanks to you guys.”

Eastman also had a special treat for TMNT fans, including those who didn’t make it to the SDCC.

“This is really exciting. You guys are going to love it. We just found out today – this is breaking news, seriously. Nickelodeon and Paramount have secured the rights to broadcast next year the original cartoon series. All episodes, the whole series, so stay tuned. […] This is the first time those characters came to life with voices and movement. And Chuck Lorre wrote an amazing theme song for us back in the day before he was Chuck Lorre. The whole thing is so fantastic, so we’re excited to announce this.”

The Plot, Courtesy of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon:

After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem opens in theaters on August 2, 2023.

‘Outlander’ Season 7 Episode 7 Recap: “A Practical Guide for Time-Travelers”

Starz’s Outlander season seven episode seven finds Roger and Brianna getting to know Buck, while back in 1777, Jamie takes part in the first Battle of Saratoga. It’s a jam-packed episode that ends with heart-stopping cliffhangers for both timelines.

Episode seven, “A Practical Guide for Time-Travelers,” opens with the Continental Army set up in Bemis Heights, NY in September 1777. It’s just outside of Saratoga, and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) writes to Bree, telling her she’s uneasy about Jamie being a part of Daniel Morgan’s riflemen. She also reveals that she met William at Fort Ticonderoga and that seeing him made her miss Bree even more.

Meanwhile, the British army’s camped near Stillwater, NY, and William Ransome (Charles Vandervaart) joins the officers in a discussion of the state of the army. The Husseins are also involved in this meeting, and they speak of desertions and deaths during this war against the Continental Army. Hopes are high they’ll meet up with supplies and reinforcements in Albany. Unfortunately, the Continental Army appears to be camped between Stillwater and Albany – and its ranks are growing every day.

Brigadier General Simon Fraser (Angus Macfadyen) toasts this last push to overpower the rebels. However, their celebration is cut short when a secret message arrives, resulting in a huddle by the generals.

William and his friend Lt Sandy Hammond (Henry Ashton) take this opportunity to relax a little, but that’s also short-lived when William’s whisked away by Captain Richardson (Ben Lambert) for a talk. William learns Howell has altered his plans and will now take on the Americans in Philadelphia instead of meeting them in Albany.

Richardson has chosen William as his second, tasking him with couriering important messages to New York.

Brig. General Fraser briefly joins William and Sandy as they’re eating, and after some small talk, William follows him as he leaves. William respectfully requests to be allowed to stay and fight, rather than being used as an errand boy. Fraser believes he’s courageous and confirms that he’ll inform Captain Richardson that he needs to find a different messenger.

Jamie (Sam Heughan) hands Claire a book he found at the creek and teases her that she needs glasses to read now. Claire teases back, saying they’ll be blind as bats before the war’s over. Jamie promises he can still shoot straight. And it turns out that will be put to the test in three days.

Claire tells him to make sure he comes back to her – or else she’ll go looking for him. Jamie’s well aware that’s what she’ll do if he doesn’t return.

Ian (John Bell) captures a British deserter and learns what the redcoats have planned. With the new information, Jamie and the army quickly prepare for battle, with Morgan leading the charge.

Claire and Jamie share a passionate but brief kiss goodbye as Jamie heads off with his men.

We’ve now arrived at the first battle of Saratoga, September 19, 1777. William and his men are lined up, ready to engage the rebels who are just across the field. Hammond lightens the mood with jokes about women, and William confesses he’ll probably never see the woman he’s interested in (Rachel Hunter) again.

The friends are still talking about women when Hammond’s cut down by a bullet to his forehead. William’s stunned as blood flows from the wound, and Hammond drops dead.

The fight begins in earnest, but it takes the urging of Brig. General Fraser for William to get on his feet and into the fray. Once he does, he channels all his anger into killing the rebels.

The battle ends, and William stares at his deceased friend while listening to the men complain about burial duty. He orders them to keep digging deeper holes to bury these brave men who perished in battle. William even joins them to dig the graves.

Back at their camp, the officers toast to victory. William’s not in the mood to celebrate and walks away from the group. Simon Fraser joins him and points out that William’s a different man now that he’s survived a battle.

The camera pans over the battlefield, past the bodies of dead soldiers from both sides, before focusing on Jamie Fraser. Jamie lies motionless, head bloody, and arm outstretched.

Bree and Roger’s Family Expands By One

Roger (Richard Rankin) shocks Brianna (Sophie Skelton) when he introduces her to the nuckelavee – William Buckley MacKenzie (Diarmaid Murtagh). Buck reveals details of his past and of hearing the buzzing of stones at Craigh na Dun and traveling through time. He adds that he saw Roger in a store and thought he might have answers.

Buck wants to understand how Roger survived being hanged and how he ended up at Lallybroch. It’s all very confusing to him.

Bree makes Buck peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that he gobbles down while revealing that his son’s name is also Jeremiah. Buck appears to still be angry about Roger’s encounter with his wife, Morag, and refuses to accept that Roger was simply helping her. Roger patiently reveals that Morag is his five – or maybe six-times great-grandmother. That means Buck is his five or six times grandfather. Jem is named Jeremiah after Roger’s father, who was named for his grandfather, who was named for Buck’s son.

“We’re family,” says Roger.

That’s a lot to take in, and Buck replies, “You wouldn’t have anything stronger than coffee, would you?”

Buck also learns that Bree is Scottish and that her father is/was James Fraser of Broch Tuarach. Bree confirms she’s also a time-traveler.

Roger finds mention in the family archive that William Buccleigh MacKenzie died in 1778. Morag followed in 1793. He decides not to tell Bree or Buck what he found out but does learn from Buck that he came through the stones in 1778.

Rob Cameron shows up unexpectedly and uninvited, and Buck is given more sandwiches and a room to hide in.

Roger and Bree do their best to entertain Rob, and Roger even allows him to look through his dad’s old hymnals. Rob’s busy reading when Roger leaves him alone in the study just as Jem and Mandy arrive home.

A short while later, the family and Rob sit down for dinner. The conversation flows and everyone’s having a good time, but Rob gets a little too flirty. Bree and Roger try to end the night, but Rob doesn’t get the hint and suggests that a little more alcohol would be a great way to finish up the evening.

Before Rob leaves, he reveals that he’s divorced. His ex-wife was from France, and she took their son with her when she went home. Rob asks if he can take Jemmy with him and his nephew, Bobby, to the movies the following night. Jemmy can then spend the night at Bobby’s if that’s okay.

Bree agrees.

After finally saying goodbye to Rob, Bree and Roger are surprised to discover Buck’s now seated on the couch watching TV with Mandy and Jem. The kids don’t think he’s scary at all because Buck told them he’s their dad’s cousin.

Roger and Bree head out to the camper, and Roger confesses that he’s decided Buck isn’t his enemy and must be missing his children. He wants to let Buck stay in the house – now that Buck knows they’re related. Bree agrees but doesn’t want him just hanging around when they’re not home. She’ll take him to her work, and on Saturday, Roger can take him back to the stones.

The following day, Buck’s overwhelmed at the site of the dam even though so much of the landscape has remained the same. He reflects on the family he’s lost, and Bree wonders why he didn’t go back through the stones immediately. Buck confesses he was wary of the stones and didn’t understand what happened.

Buck asks if she can help him travel back through the stones, and Bree explains that his ring’s missing its gemstone because of the journey. She promises to help him find one so he can get back to his family.

Rob joins them, and it’s obvious Buck’s not impressed with him. Buck notices how Rob treats Bree, and after Rob walks off, he admits he thinks Rob was smiling a bit too much in Bree’s direction.

Later at Lallybroch, Roger finds Buck holding Jem’s toy plane. Buck thinks they’re incredible and believes his son would love this toy. Roger suggests he take it through the stones if Jem agrees.

Buck fills Roger in on his impressions of Rob, saying Rob has a “hot eye” for Bree. Roger reminds him he was wrong about him and Morag. He then confesses that he found the family tree and that it says he died in 1778. That might mean Buck never makes it back to his family, so they believed he died. Or he made it back and died that same year.

That night, Roger and Bree are alone when Roger tells her what Buck thinks about Rob. Roger also believes Rob’s flirty, and Bree responds by unbuttoning her blouse. Things get hot and heavy as Bree suggests Roger’s feeling “territorial.” Roger admits he’s feeling primal. What follows is one of the few sensual, passionate Roger and Bree sex scenes.

Roger gets up in the middle of the night and returns to his desk. It’s only then that he notices a bit of paper sticking out from the chest containing Claire and Jamie’s letters. He’s about to take a closer look when he hears Mandy scream.

Bree’s cradling their daughter as Roger rushes in, and Mandy yells, “Jemmy’s gone! He’s gone!”

Roger tries to calm her down by saying Jem is at Bobby’s, but Mandy insists he’s “not here.” Bree realizes Mandy means her telepathic connection with her brother is broken. Mandy woke up because the stones screamed at her, and she saw the bad man taking Jem to the stones!

Roger checks in with Buck and he hasn’t seen Jem. Bree calls Bobby’s mom and learns there wasn’t any planned movie outing and that Rob’s car is gone. (Rob lives across the street from his sister.) Roger believes Rob read the letters in the chest.

Roger and Buck drive to the stones, and Roger has pieced it together that Rob knew the time travel elements in his journal were real and not just part of a sci-fi story. However, Roger doesn’t know if Rob is a time traveler. He runs through the list of people who know how to travel and realizes he wrote down that Geillis Duncan believed you needed a human sacrifice to travel. Roger wonders if that’s why Rob took Jemmy!

They arrive at the stones, and Buck spots Jemmy’s scarf next to the stones.
