  • Monday, May 29:
8:00-9:00 PM – MASTERCHEF (Special Encore)
9:00-10:00 PM – CRIME SCENE KITCHEN (Time Period Premiere)

Crime Scene Kitchen:
Crime Scene Kitchen is a culinary guessing game in which bakers are tasked with decoding what type of dessert was made, when all that’s left are the crumbs, flour trails and a few elusive clues. They must then recreate the recipe for celebrity judges, chef Curtis Stone and cake artist Yolanda Gampp, who will determine how closely their sweet treat matches the missing dessert – and how good it tastes!

New this season, the bakers are divided into two groups – self-taught and classically trained – and the rivalries are fierce!

Beat Shazam:
Hosted and executive-produced by award-winning actor, singer and comedian Jamie Foxx, who is joined by his daughter, producer and activist Corinne Foxx as co-host and deejay, Beat Shazam is an interactive game show that pits teams of two against the clock and each other, as they attempt to identify the biggest hit songs of all time. In the end, the team with the most money banked will outlast the competition and go against Shazam, the world’s most popular song identification app, for the chance to win $1 million dollars.

Don’t Forget the Lyrics!:
The music continues on Tuesdays as Emmy Award nominee Niecy Nash hosts a brand-new season of the popular game show. The game show challenges contestants’ musical memory, as they get one song closer to winning $1 million if they Don’t Forget The Lyrics!. Contestants will choose songs from different genres, decades and musical artists. Then they’ll take center stage to sing alongside the live in-studio band as the lyrics are projected on screen – but when the music stops and the words disappear, will the contestants belt out the correct missing lyrics, or freeze under pressure?

If they sing nine songs correctly, they are presented with a No. 1 hit and sing the final missing lyrics for the top prize of $1 million. It’s that simple: 1 contestant, 10 songs, 1 million dollars!

MasterChef: United Tastes of America:
Gordon Ramsay, acclaimed chef Aarón Sánchez, and renowned restaurateur Joe Bastianich return for the ultimate cook-off, as the top home cooks from four parts of America (West, Northeast, Midwest and South) battle it out for their region. The home cooks will face a multitude of cooking trials, including a State Fair challenge, a series of iconic Mystery Box challenges, cooking a meal at Dodger Stadium, and the fan-favorite Tag Team event, where they must create a Michelin-star quality three-course meal!

Only one home cook will win it all and take home the cash prize of $250,000 and the title of America’s MasterChef.

Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars:
Culinary titan Gordon Ramsay sets aside his razor-sharp knives for the cutthroat business world in the all-new competition series Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars, putting food and drink industry entrepreneurs through a multitude of challenges designed to showcase their business skills, test their drive and convince Ramsay they have what it takes to earn his personal investment of $250,000.

Ramsay gets down to business with a selected group of food and drink industry professionals, as he searches for the next greatest culinary entrepreneur. The aspiring moguls will be challenged in all aspects of running a food enterprise, including creating, marketing and selling to real customers. In addition to Ramsay, their progress will be evaluated by guest judges and curated focus groups.

As Ramsay pushes contestants to their limits, they’ll have to prove they possess the raw ingredients required to succeed – drive, dedication, creativity, passion and talent. Ramsay is prepared to put his money where his mouth is, by presenting the winner with an investment opportunity to take their idea to the next level. But to win Ramsay’s support, it will take more than a great idea. They just need to survive Gordon Ramsay – the only angel investor.

‘The Big Door Prize’ Wins a Second Season Order

The Big Door Prize starring Emmy winner Chris O’Dowd (State of the Union) has been renewed by Apple TV+ for season two. The renewal comes a week after the comedy’s March 29, 2023 premiere.

Based on M.O. Walsh’s novel of the same name, The Big Door Prize tells the story of a small town that is forever changed when a mysterious machine appears in the general store, promising to reveal each resident’s true life potential. Dusty Hubbard (O’Dowd), a seemingly content, cheerful family man and high school teacher, watches everyone around him reevaluate their life choices and ambitions — based on the machine’s printouts — and is forced to question whether he is truly as happy as he once thought.

While he remains skeptical of the machine, his wife, Cass (Dennis), indulges in the dream that there’s something bigger out there for her. Like many of Deerfield’s residents, the couple has lived a relatively safe, uncomplicated life, until the arrival of the Morpho machine. However, all of that is about to change when the community is forced to reconcile with their unfulfilled achievements in pursuit of a better future.

‘The Diplomat’ Trailer: Keri Russell is Charged with Stopping a War

Netflix has released the first trailer for The Diplomat, a new political drama premiering on April 20, 2023. The trailer introduces Keri Russell as a recently appointed ambassador who’s called in to stop a conflict in the Persian Gulf. However, the battle at home appears just as likely to explode into a full-blown war.

Series creator, showrunner, and executive producer Debora Cahn (Homeland, The West Wing) says the series is about transcendence and long-term relationships.

“It’s hard to keep a relationship going, be it a marriage or a military alliance. We change, the world changes, and yet we want these relationships to go on forever,” stated Cahn in a feature on Netflix’s Tudum. It’s a show about a bunch of good people doing their best to keep their global and personal partnerships intact without killing each other. In the world of diplomacy, you’re dealing with a lot of rule-bound, protocol-driven behavior, but underneath all that, these are people who sweat, and spill coffee on their clothes, and forget the name of the person they’re talking to. All of that is always bubbling under the grandeur and majesty of working with heads of state.”

In addition to Keri Russell as US Ambassador Kate Wyler, the eight-episode season stars Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh. Celia Imrie, Michael McKean, Nana Mensah, T’Nia Miller, and Miguel Sandoval guest star.

Dan Toland serves as producer, and Keri Russell, Janice Williams, and Simon Cellan Jones (episodes 1-2) executive produce.

War is brewing on one continent and boiling over on another. Kate will have to diffuse international crises, forge strategic alliances in London, and adjust to her new place in the spotlight — all while trying to survive her marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell)

Ben Affleck Discusses the Story Behind ‘Air’

Amazon Studios’ Air tells the incredible story of how Nike developed a partnership with Michael Jordan, created the hugely successful Air Jordan brand, and changed the way athletes are compensated for endorsements. Ben Affleck directs and stars in the film inspired by a true story – a film that wouldn’t have been made without the blessing of the NBA legend.

“I went to speak to Michael because I’ve been lucky enough to run across him a few times. I’m not going to act like me and him are friends, you know what I mean? Just like idolized the guy and every now and again I’ve had a chance to spend time with him. It’s been very memorable for me. Probably he’s forgotten it,” recalled Affleck during Air’s press conference. “So, I had at least enough of an in to say, ‘Hey, you know, can I come see you and just kind of run this past you?’

Because, to be honest, listen, from a point of view of a respect for him, his family, who he is, what he means from a selfish point of view, from the movie, like the stupidest thing in the world would be to go make a movie that involves… he’s not in, doesn’t appear in, nonetheless, that invokes his name and tells a part of his story that he was opposed to.”

Affleck continued: “If he said don’t do it, I just was going to not do it. That would be that. You know, over. Last conversation. And I was very, very prepared for that to be the result of that because I had no reason to think that he would be open to it or that he would welcome it, particularly since it wasn’t the Michael Jordan story where they had bought his rights and that sort of thing, which I would think might be discomforting.

However, what I found was that he was very gracious and actually when I said, ‘Look, this is not historically accurate in the sense that I can’t dot every I and cross every T, what time every phone call was made, this is going to have to be something of a fable, a parable, an inspiring story, and so I’m going to take liberties in order to make it an hour and 30, 40 minutes, but I don’t want to violate anything that’s fundamentally important or true to you.”

Affleck asked Jordan if there was anything that needed to be included in the film and was pleasantly surprised at the NBA superstar’s response.

“I think it was telling that he wasn’t somebody who was like, ‘Whoa, we got to talk about when I did this, and I did that,’ which there are people who take that approach. He only talked about other people. He wanted to make sure that other people who were meaningful were included in the story. George Raveling was one of them which was why Marlon [Wayans’] role is in the movie.”

Initially, Air was going to focus on Michael Jordan signing with Nike, with Michael as the key figure at the heart of the story. But after speaking with Jordan, Affleck realized there was a better way to approach the story behind the iconic basketball shoes.

“When I saw how he talked about his mother and the regard and esteem in which he held her… This is a very intimidating, powerful man,” explained Affleck. “He really is like it’s sort of like being on Olympus. You know, you’re around somebody who is as close to a deity as you’re going to find, you know?”

During their conversation, Affleck realized there was a better approach to telling the story of the first Air Jordan shoe.

“I saw a reverence and a respect and an adoration and love when he talked about his mother. And it just shocked me – and shame on me for not kind of assuming this was the case. But when I heard it, I realized right away this is the story. And this is a beautiful story. And it’s a story about Deloris Jordan and what she means to Michael, and that she’s emblematic of what so many mothers must have meant to so many athletes and entertainers and people in this business who are oftentimes very young and thrust into a world of fame and money. And that can be confusing.”

Affleck added: “And so I thought actually this is brilliant. This is what the story is. This is beautiful and this is the protagonist. And I said, ‘Who do you’ … offhandedly, which is always a mistake … ’Who do you think should play your mom?’ He said, ‘It has to be Viola Davis.’”

Ben Affleck understood why Jordan wanted Davis. Of course he’d want the very best to play his mother.

“I knew that it was incumbent on us to create a role that was worthy of Viola, and we tried to do that,” said Affleck. “I still think probably her saying yes, which has been a lifelong career ambition of mine, I thought I really will have made it as a director if I have Viola Davis in my movie and she said yes. I tried to believe it was me. I think a lot of it had to do with me being like, ‘Michael Jordan wants you to play his mom.’”

Air opened in theaters on April 5, 2023. The R-rated film stars Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Viola Davis, Jason Bateman, Chris Messina, Chris Tucker, and Julius Tennon.

‘Beef’ Review: Steven Yeun and Ali Wong Nail This Road Rage Dramedy

Newton’s third law of motion states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. The opposing forces in Netflix’s Beef get the opposite reaction part right, but as for the equal…well, that’s up for debate.

Danny Cho (Steven Yeun, Minari), a struggling contractor, has on what any normal day would be just an annoying encounter with Amy Lau (Ali Wong, American Housewife). Unfortunately for Danny and Amy, on the day their paths cross neither have any – pardon my language – effs left to give.

Danny’s receipt-less return of grills is denied, and Amy’s spent two excruciatingly long years trying to sell her business only to be deprived, once again, of the satisfaction of closing the deal. Some cosmic force has placed them in the parking lot outside the business at the root of their anger at precisely the moment in time when neither can control their actions.

A near miss in exiting the lot escalates from honks and flipping the bird to a high-speed chase through residential streets which are, thankfully, free of small children or wandering pets. A few minutes of intense road rage should be enough to get this insane reaction out of their systems. But, no, Danny and Amy have found an outlet for all their pent-up feelings. What begins as a simple dispute escalates into a life-altering – and life-threatening – showdown.

If you’ve ever had one of those days when the slightest provocation sets you off, when even the tiniest of misunderstandings sets you down a path of uncontrollable anger you can, at least briefly, empathize with Amy and Danny.

Danny’s just struggling to make a living as a contractor, trying his best to get his laidback bro involved in procuring a home for their elderly parents. Amy simply wants to be able to devote more time to her artistically inclined young daughter by selling her hugely successful business. Neither intends to resort to criminal activity. And neither Amy nor Danny is able to fully comprehend the long-lasting, widespread destruction their inability to get on with their lives after a road rage incident will cause.

Beef Series Review
Steven Yeun as Danny and Ali Wong as Amy in ‘Beef’ (Photo Courtesy of Netflix © 2022)

The 10-episode limited series is deliciously dark and twisted and serves as a brutal takedown of classism. Beef dives into a wide variety of topics including racism, sexism, porn addiction, catfishing, and infidelity. We even get a little religion, couples therapy, the horrors of investing in Bitcoin, and online sleuthing, with a side serving of mansplaining, fraud, and hoplophilia thrown in.

Beef creator, writer, and showrunner Lee Sung Jin admitted the series is inspired by his own experience with road rage. “It honked at me, cursed at me, and drove away,” said Lee, describing his fateful encounter with a white SUV driver. “And for some reason on that day, I was like, ‘I’m going to follow you.’”

Lee didn’t continue to pursue the other driver, but the incident sparked the idea of two random people who escalate a situation to a point of no return. And with Steven Yeun and Ali Wong as the victims/aggressors, Lee’s Beef is a riveting, alternately hilarious and terrifying showcase of absurdity.

Beef doesn’t require you to side with either Amy or Danny. There isn’t an obvious villain, and your allegiance will shift not just from episode to episode but scene to scene. Ali Wong perfectly captures a successful businesswoman who stifles her emotions behind a carefully manufactured smile and agreeable attitude. Amy’s husband, George (Joseph Lee, Searching), is so disconnected from her feelings that when she attempts to explain how truly frightened she was by her initial encounter with Danny, he suggests she return to journaling her feelings. This is the same man who enrolled their child in mindfulness classes so she can be her truest self and who creates sculptures that resemble cartoonish monster penises.

Wong is incredible at showing how Amy’s switch can flip from calm, cool, and controlled, to manic and merciless within a scene. Steven Yeun is Wong’s equal in taking Danny, who appears to be a decent man under normal circumstances, from a hardworking contractor to a rage-fueled monster. Their shared scenes are infused with anger and loathing, and witnessing the build-up of their frustration and then the laser-focused manner in which they go about taking each other down is fascinating.

With Yeun and Wong in the lead, series creator Lee Sung Jin serves up a balanced dish that’s loaded with savory performances and marinated in timely societal issues.

GRADE: A

Beef premieres on Netflix on April 6, 2023. The 10-episode dark comedy stars Steven Yeun, Ali Wong, Joseph Lee, Young Mazino, David Choe, and Maria Bello.

‘Beau is Afraid’ New Trailer Starring Joaquin Phoenix

The new trailer for Beau is Afraid is pretty much everything you’d expect from an Ari Aster (Midsommar, Hereditary) and A24 (Everything Everywhere All at Once) film. The trailer does a terrific job of teasing what’s in store without actually giving away any of the plot.

Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) leads the cast as the titular character. Emmy Award winner Nathan Lane (Only Murders in the Building), Oscar nominee Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone), Parker Posey (Lost in Space), and three-time Tony Award winner Patti LuPone also star along with Stephen McKinley Henderson (Causeway), Hayley Squires (Great Expectations), Denis Ménochet (The Mauritanian), Kylie Rogers (Home Before Dark), Armen Nahapetian (Here and Now), and Zoe Lister-Jones (Life in Pieces).

A24 released this extremely basic synopsis: “A paranoid man goes on an epic odyssey in order to get back home in this bold and ingeniously depraved new film from writer/director Ari Aster.”

A24 will release Beau is Afraid in New York and Los Angeles on April 14, 2023 followed by a wide release on April 21.
