The Resident Season 6, Courtesy of Fox:

The compelling medical drama The Resident follows the doctors and nurses at Chastain Memorial Park Hospital. They work tirelessly to solve intricate medical cases, stopping at nothing to save their patients while facing challenges in their own lives.

Season five was a tumultuous journey, as our heroes at Chastain weathered several storms, including the devastating loss of the beloved Nurse Practitioner Nicolette Nevin. Now, entering a cutting-edge and electrifying sixth season, the stakes are at an all-time high. This season, pertinent topics are touched upon that push our characters to the limit while fighting for their patients’ lives. The season kicks off six months after we’ve last seen our heroes at Chastain. Chastain’s quality of care is put at risk and it’s up to our doctors to shine a light on the effects political corruption has on the healthcare system.

In the season premiere, DR. CONRAD HAWKINS (Czuchry) cozies up with his new love interest. Who will it be, DR. BILLIE SUTTON (Lucas) or DR. KINCAID (CADE) SULLIVAN (Kaley Ronayne)? Conrad’s journey continues as he balances his new love life, single fatherhood and saving patients at Chastain. Elsewhere, we’re catapulted into a gripping medical emergency for PADMA DEVI (guest star Aneesha Joshi) and her unborn twins, that will showcase the skills of Chastain’s new top pediatric surgeon, DR. IAN SULLIVAN (McCarthy), as he hides a dark secret surrounding addiction. If Ian’s secret leaks, it can cost him his job and his relationship with his daughter, Cade.

Stepping into fatherhood, we’ll see another side of the “Raptor” or DR. AJ AUSTIN (Warner) as he supports Padma all the way. The power couple DR. DEVON PRAVESH (Dayal) and DR. LEELA DEVI (Joshi) shine as Devon leads his own clinical trials and Leela is appointed Chief Resident. Chastain’s CEO, DR. KIT VOSS (Leeves), feels the stress of running a hospital when resources are low, and a new potential governor threatens to cut Chastain’s funding, all while supporting her love DR. RANDOLPH BELL (Greenwood) through his battle with MS.

This is a season of renewal and transformation for the doctors at Chastain as they step into new phases of their personal and professional lives.

‘1923’ Episode 2 Recap: “Nature’s Empty Throne”

1923 Episode 2 Recap
Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton in ‘1923’ episode 2 (Photo by Emerson Miller / Paramount+ © 2022 Viacom International Inc)

The first episode of Paramount+’s 1923 introduced a new generation of Duttons on the Yellowstone Ranch in Montana, as well as one Dutton who prefers the life of hunting maneaters in Africa. Episode two, “Nature’s Empty Throne,” also divides its time between the Yellowstone Ranch and Africa, as well as a government boarding school for Native Americans in North Dakota.

Since there are three distinct storylines taking place, this recap is divided up into three parts to make it easier to track the key players. (Spoilers ahead!)

At the Yellowstone Ranch It’s Ranchers vs. Sheepherders:

Jack Dutton (Darren Mann) discovered a field full of sheep and was shocked when a trespassing sheepherder shot at him in episode one. The action picks up with Jack’s horse shot and Jack pinned down, gun just out of his reach on the ground.

Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Jack’s dad, John Sr. (James Badge Dale), hear the gunshot and race toward it, while Jack attempts to retrieve his gun. Jack’s partially trapped under the fallen horse as half a dozen sheepherders advance on him. The Yellowstone cowboys arrive in time to save his life, and Jacob pistol whips the leader of the sheepherders, Banner (Jerome Flynn), while Banner insists he wasn’t the one who shot at Jack.

Jack claims they all shot at him, and the Yellowstone cowboys are out for blood and want to hang these trespassers. Jacob orders ranch foreman Zane Davis (Brian Geraghty) to gather some men and push all these sheep toward the reservation. People are starving on the rez, and these sheep will feed them.

Banner and his men are strung up while seated on their horses. If they remain still, they might survive. If not, they’ll die.

The Yellowstone cowboys make camp for the night, and Jacob, John Sr, and Jack discuss their options. The area’s been grazed off, so they need to continue to move south, closer to the park – and closer to bears and wolves. Plus, the chuckwagon can’t go up much further so the men will have to tough it out on elk meat.

Jacob recalls this is how it used to be on the ranch. There didn’t use to be a bunkhouse and “easy wasn’t in the job description.”

Jacob thinks a few of the sheepherders will make it if their horses are loyal. Jacob hopes some of them do survive and explains that the Yellowstone Ranch’s greatest enemy isn’t wolves, bears, or the weather. The ranch’s greatest enemy is other men.

“Man will choose to take what you built rather than build it for himself,” says Jacob. (Truer words have never been spoken when it comes to life on the Yellowstone Ranch.)

Jacob hopes whoever survives will tell the world what’s in store if they cross him.

1883’s Elsa (Isabel May) confirms in a voiceover that the Duttons have always assumed men will seek to take from them, and that belief has always governed the family. The Duttons have always refused to surrender.

Back at the ranch house, Cara (Helen Mirren) and Emma (Marley Shelton) sit on the porch late at night and discuss the men in their family. Emma realizes her son, Jack, is reckless and she isn’t sure where he got it from. Unfortunately, Jack’s bride-to-be isn’t likely to tamp down his wild spirit. Cara thinks she’ll actually add fuel to the fire.

Banner manages to get his hand on a knife and speaks calmly to his horse, urging it to remain still. He cuts his hands loose and then manages to cut the noose. He’s the sole survivor.

The following morning Zane and the cowboys move the sheep toward the rez and are met on the way by a dozen Native American men who initially claim they don’t want the sheep. Zane explains he’s giving these sheep to the tribe to eat or to do whatever they want to with them.

The Native Americans agree to take them and ask Zane to pass on their thanks to Jacob Dutton.

The cattle are also on the move and have arrived at a place John believes will be perfect for them to graze. There’s even a spring nearby that feeds into a lake. Jacob agrees, and a few cowboys will stay with the herd while the remainder can return to the ranch.

1923 Episode 2
Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton ‘1923’ episode 2 (Photo Cr: Emerson Miller / Paramount+ © 2022 Viacom International Inc)

Spencer’s Reputation Precedes Him

Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) was about to be attacked by a leopard as episode one ended, and episode two picks up the action seconds later. Spencer survives, but one of his guides is fatally injured. Spencer’s able to kill the leopard before it makes off with his friend’s body.

Spencer makes it back to the main tent, bloody but in relativity good shape considering the circumstances. He immediately pours himself a drink and asks the guests who’ve gathered in the tent for a cigarette and a doctor.

Spencer reminds the doctor to clean the wounds carefully since leopards have dirty claws and teeth. If there’s anything left in the wounds, he could succumb to gangrene very quickly.

It’s revealed the leopard was a female and Spencer realizes Richard Holland, the man in charge of this camp, knew a breeding pair was responsible for the attacks but failed to inform him there were two leopards. Holland also hasn’t apologized for Spencer’s friend’s death, and Spencer’s placing the blame squarely on Holland’s shoulders.

Holland is forced to apologize at gunpoint. Spencer says the only reason he’s allowing Holland to live is that he needs a ride to Nairobi in the morning.

The wildlife of Africa fills the screen as Spencer’s seated at an outside bar in a fancy hotel. A pretty British woman approaches him and is shocked that he’s an American. She points out that he’s rude, and he doesn’t argue with her assessment. She likes his style and figures out he’s a hunter, and Spencer confirms he works for the Protectorate. He’s not the sort of hunter she assumed.

The woman’s friends giggle and surround him as they realize he’s the American war hero who kills maneaters. Spencer and the woman continue their conversation; she’s flirting, but he’s playing it cool. She’s heard he killed a maneater with his bare hands and believes that’s romantic. He disagrees.

She asks why he kills maneaters and Spencer replies, “Because dying is the most alive you’ll ever feel.”

“You don’t see the romance in that?” she asks.

One of her friends pulls her away, saying she’s engaged. But it’s too late. The spark’s turned into a flame, and she can’t take her eyes off Spencer as she joins her friends. Spencer also watches her with interest as she’s yanked away.

One of the men who employs Spencer hopes he’s capable of holding a rifle with his injuries. Spencer confirms he is, and the man wants him to head to Tanganyika to kill a spotted hyena that’s attacking engineers on a railroad.

A car will take him there in the morning.

And it turns out the pretty British woman is named Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) and is at this hotel with a large party to celebrate her engagement. She excuses herself after a toast is offered and hurries from the restaurant. She’s having a difficult time catching her breath, and it’s only outside in the fresh air that she’s able to settle down.

A friend joins her outside and Alexandra admits this marriage was chosen for her and she doesn’t want it. Her friend points out her fiancé’s kind, but Alexandra believes her engagement is nothing more than a real estate transaction.

Alexandra’s friend heads back in as she stares at the night sky with tears in her eyes. She collects herself and heads back in, only to spot Spencer seated at a different bar. They flirt, and she wonders where his next adventure’s taking him. Spencer asks about her next adventure, and she claims all of hers are over.

“That’s a shame,” he replies. She agrees and teases that he should whisk her away on his.

It appears they’re about to kiss when her fiancé calls out her name. Alexandra joins him, and this time she doesn’t look back.

The following morning Spencer packs up the car and spots Alexandra and her guests saying their goodbyes nearby. They mime tipping their hats at each other, smiling.

As Spencer’s driver pulls away, Alexandra stares after him, no longer smiling. Spencer meets her eyes and stares back.

The car’s heading down the driveway when Alexandra picks up her bags and chases after it. Spencer asks his driver to stop and Alexandra calls Spencer her knight in shining armor. She jumps in the car and says she’ll get out if he tells her to. Spencer reminds her it’s dangerous where he’s heading and as her fiancé and friends head toward them, Alexandra replies, “Let’s look death in the eye then, shall we?”

1923 Episode 2
Aminah Nieves as Teonna in ‘1923’ episode 2 (Photo Cr: Emerson Miller / Paramount+ © 2022 Viacom International Inc.)

Abusive Nuns Make Life Hell for Teonna

The young Native American girls at the government boarding school are being taught how to sweep by Sister Mary (Jennifer Ehle) when she slaps one who doesn’t do it exactly as she instructs. Teonna (Aminah Nieves) stares at her in defiance.

The lessons continue throughout the day and then the students are served a dinner full of maggots. While Sister Mary leads them in prayer, Teonna speaks in her native tongue and says she’d rather be hit than eat this. She’s hit for misbehaving but is able to fight back before multiple nuns manage to hold her down.

Teonna’s locked in a box outside as Father Renaud (Sebastian Roché) warns her never to speak that language again.

Meanwhile, Teonna’s grandmother asks to speak to Mr. Worth, the superintendent of the Indian Affairs Office at Lodge Grass Reservation, MT. She requests her granddaughter be moved from the government boarding school in North Dakota back to her home on the reservation. If Teonna’s brought back to Montana, she could move into her home which is only a mile from a day school run by Baptists.

Mr. Worth claims that since she’s not her granddaughter’s immediate family, she’ll need to legally adopt her Teonna. To do that, she must go before a judge.

Morning arrives and Teonna is removed from the box and brought back inside. She’s in bad shape and although at first it appears Sister Alice is simply a sympathetic nun who wants to help her bathe, it’s quickly apparent she’s molesting the poor girl.

Sister Mary interrupts and sends Sister Alice away. She then blames Teonna for not stopping Sister Alice, even though Teonna can barely lift her arm.

Teonna’s burning up and Sister Mary empties a bucket of ice into her tub, all while claiming to be her salvation. Sister Mary believes she’s been tasked with taming this “godless place” and teaching the girls how to become wives and mothers. Sister Mary warns Teonna that she will “kill the Indian in her” and begins beating her while she’s in the tub. Sister Mary, still sporting a black eye, then promises to “kill all of her” if she ever lays a hand on her again.

Review: ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’

Glass Onion
Jessica Henwick as Peg, Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc and Janelle Monáe as Andi in ‘Glass Onion’ (Photo Cr: John Wilson / NETFLIX)

Writer/director Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery sends 2022 off on a high note. Johnson leaps over the high bar he set with 2019’s Knives Out and outdoes himself with this clever, fast-paced, and incredibly fun second installment.

Everything from the mystery at its core to the ensemble cast bringing the whodunit to life is bigger, broader, and more ballsy. Johnson’s script takes razor-sharp swipes at narcissistic billionaires, and the zingers fly by so fast repeat viewings are mandatory.

The fictional tech billionaire roasting on Johnson’s skewer is Miles Bron (three-time Oscar nominee Edward Norton), head of the massive Alpha corporation which apparently has its tentacles in all sorts of industries. Bron invites his nearest and dearest friends – a group he’s dubbed his “beautiful disrupters” – to his private Greek island estate for a murder mystery party.

A weirder, more eclectic group of friends would be difficult to find. Birdie Jay (Oscar-nominee Kate Hudson) is on the downside of fame as an influencer/model/fashion designer after being canceled for offensive social media postings. Duke Cody (Dave Bautista) is a men’s rights activist…okay…and wannabe YouTube star whose gorgeous girlfriend Whiskey (Madelyn Cline) is the brains of the operation. Connecticut Governor Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn) is attempting to keep the door to her closet full of skeletons closed while engaged in a competitive Senate campaign. And Lionel Toussaint (two-time Oscar nominee Leslie Odom Jr.) is an actual rocket scientist forced to act on Miles’ wacky suggestions.

The odd-women out are Peg (Jessica Henwick), Birdie’s long-suffering assistant, and Mile’s ex-business partner, Andi Brand (Janelle Monáe, the standout of the ensemble), the very epitome of cool, calm, and collected. However, looks can be deceiving and Andi’s anything but cool on the inside. The acrimonious dissolution of Miles and Andi’s working relationship has driven a wedge between the disrupters, and her presence sets the group on edge.

Each of Miles’ disrupters received a puzzle box containing an invitation to the reunion party. One is also delivered to detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) who, although confused as to why Bron would invite him, jumps at the opportunity.

Benoit isn’t the only one confused by his invitation. It’s quickly revealed Miles didn’t send a box to Benoit’s abode. It’s only because Benoit’s famous – and tech bros like to hang with the famous – that Benoit is allowed to stay and participate in what Miles believes is an incredibly complicated, difficult-to-solve murder mystery.

Unfortunately for Miles, Benoit ruins the game before dinner’s even finished. Fortunately for the audience, the end of Miles’ game is just the start of the real murder mystery.

Each of Miles’ invited guests has a legitimate reason to want the egotistical billionaire dead. But Agatha Christie would be proud of Rian Johnson’s well-crafted twists and turns, and whatever you expect from that setup isn’t what Johnson dishes up. There’s one dizzying, tantalizing twist after another, and Johnson’s juggling of oodles of narrative threads without cheating is a major accomplishment.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Kathryn Hahn as Claire, Madelyn Cline as Whiskey, Edward Norton as Miles, Leslie Odom Jr. as Lionel, and Kate Hudson as Birdie in ‘Glass Onion’ (Photo Cr. John Wilson © 2022 Netflix)

Everything that made Knives Out such an entertaining romp is incorporated into Glass Onion and then improved upon. There’s so much to love about Glass Onion, not the least of which is watching Daniel Craig fully embrace this wildly entertaining character and listening to him wrap his tongue around Benoit’s unique Southern drawl.

Johnson asked a lot of his cast, and to a person, they threw themselves into these gloriously over-the-top characters. I’d be shocked if there was a single piece of scenery left standing at the end of filming, and I mean that as a compliment. The more outrageous the better when it comes to Glass Onion’s ensemble.

So, who did it? Rian Johnson, twice, and we can hope his Knives Out franchise sticks around for many more installments. Johnson’s an incredible storyteller and peeling back the layers of his Knives Out whodunits is an absolute pleasure.

‘National Treasure: Edge of History’ Episode 3 Recap: “Graceland Gambit”

National Treasure Edge of History Episode 3 Recap
Antonio Cipriano, Zuri Reed, Lisette Olivera, and Jake Austin Walker in ‘National Treasure: Edge of History’ episode 3 (Disney/Brian Roedel)

Disney+’s National Treasure: Edge of History episode two ended with a very shocked and confused Jess (Lisette Olivera) learning her mother was the author of an unpublished academic paper that provided Liam’s (Jake Austin Walker) dad with information on rare artifacts. Episode three opens with Jess confirming she now believes her mom knew about the treasure.

Jess, Tasha (Zuri Reed), and the gang’s newest member, Liam, show up at Ethan’s place to use Oren’s (Antonio Cipriano) old camcorder. They watch a tape and Jess acts as interpreter, explaining her mom is delivering a lecture about women fleeing as war broke out. They brought with them sacred objects so their history would be preserved.

One brave woman, Malinche, risked her life to save the treasure from the Conquistadors. Her name was dragged through the mud for what others perceived as helping Cortes, but she was actually keeping an eye on the Conquistadors while her underground alliance of women smuggled the treasure away.

Tasha points out that all the women in the drawings are wearing the same necklace as Jess. Jess has a quick flashback to Peter Sadusky telling her the necklace is a secret oath.

The tape continues, and Jess’s mom explains the women created a treasure map and broke it into three pieces.

Jess’s mom’s lecture is disrupted by a man who claims everything in her dissertation is a fantasy. The three tribes that had the maps never associated with each other, and Malinche wasn’t a hero; she was a traitor.

Jess is once again shocked when her father appears on the video, adamantly defending her mother and saying he and her mother will prove it’s real by finding the treasure.

Jess needs a moment to collect herself after seeing her father in the video. Liam, too, has a moment and comes to the realization that their families weren’t crazy; the treasure is real.

Ethan (Jordan Rodrigues) shows up during the Scooby gang’s meeting and questions Jess. He thought she was done with this treasure stuff. (He’s wrong.)

Over at the FBI, Agent Ross (Lyndon Smith) receives a call from the coroner’s office which verifies she went against her boss’s orders and asked for a toxicology report on Peter Sadusky. As Agent Ross hurriedly gets off the phone, her boss stops by and delivers a pep talk about wanting her to be eager and assuring her that he believes in her.

After going over everything with Ethan, he becomes the newest member of the treasure-hunting group.

They meet up in Peter’s secret room and Oren geeks out over the artifacts, realizing Liam’s granddad is the redacted FBI agent referenced in Riley Poole’s podcast. Liam says his dad had one of the relics but died in a diving accident a few days later. No one knows where the relic is, but there was a clue that his dad and grandpa couldn’t figure out: “A message was passed to Sun King born to Peace.”

Jess and Ethan bounce ideas off each other and come up with King Louis and the Louisiana territory. And Tasha finds a note to beware of someone named Salazar.

Liam disagrees with the King Louis thing; he thinks it’s a different kind of king – Elvis. Elvis had a label called Sun Records and Oren chimes in that Elvis was a Freemason. They explore this theory and figure out Elvis’s great-great-great-grandmother was Cherokee. Her name was Morning Dove White, and that’s why “Peace” was capitalized in the quote. (Dove is a sign of peace.)

More and more clues seem to be pointing to Elvis. They realize they need to go to Graceland, break into a hidden room that Oren knows about, and retrieve a secret guitar that no one knows about.

One of Billie’s minions, Kacey (Breeda Wool), goes over Jess’s history with her boss. Another of Billie’s associates, Nate (Patrick Brennan), is about to open the relic they took from Jess when Billie (Catherine Zeta-Jones) realizes the clues with the map are on the inside of it, not the outside. She has someone bring her another relic now that she knows what to do with them.

Meanwhile, the coroner questions Agent Ross about investigating the death of a decorated FBI agent. She comes clean about how her boss wanted her to cancel the toxicology report. The coroner reveals much of the report is inconclusive. There were a lot of unknown substances in his system. And in a bizarre twist, Peter’s hand was stained orange as though he was clutching something.

Billie and her team seem to think that because they have two-thirds of the map, it will lead them to the other relic. Billie’s certain it’s in Mexico.

National Treasure Edge of History Episode 3
Zuri Reed and Lisette Olivera in ‘National Treasure: Edge of History’ episode 3 (Disney/Brian Roedel)

As Jess and her friends go over their plan to steal Elvis’s guitar, Oren’s busy freaking out. He believes they’re being followed and thinks it could be Salazar. It turns out he’s wrong and they make it into Graceland. Once there, Oren releases moths that get inside a display case, and Liam and Ethan show up posing as exterminators.

Graceland’s head of security asks Liam and Ethan to split up to check for moths anywhere else on the property. Ethan is led to the secret underground room and the head of security informs him he’ll need to sign a non-disclosure agreement before he leaves.

Ethan spots the guitar with the dove on it.

When the real exterminator shows up, Oren is given the task of stalling him.

Ethan shares photos of the guitar and Jess realizes they have to go back in when she spots Elvis’s gold record of “La Paloma.” Aside from the fact the name translates to “the dove,” what catches her eye is that song never went gold. Why would a gold record of it be hanging on the wall?

Jess and Liam head in, but Jess is momentarily stymied when she doesn’t know the code for the access panel. Ethan says he couldn’t see what the man entered to get in, and Liam helps out by borrowing a man’s guitar and singing an Elvis song, drawing attention to himself.

Jess manages to enter the secret room and plays the record that was hanging on the wall.

Unfortunately, Liam’s plan isn’t working and the head of security is on his way down in the elevator. A suspenseful moment passes when he examines the room and notices the record on the wall is crooked. However, he’s drawn back to Liam who’s now causing a scene to allow time for Jess to get out safely.

Tasha successfully wipes the security footage.

Jess plays them what she recorded, and it sounds like distorted voices. Liam thinks they can mess with some music software to try to clean it up.

Billie and her team are in a cave in Iztaccihuatl, Mexico, where she finds drawings of Incan, Aztec, and Mayan symbols on the walls. As Nate’s trying to fix the drone they’re using, Billie realizes this is a trap. She’s too late and Nate plummets to his death.

Ethan shows up at the bar to talk to Liam, hoping he understands they all have to be careful with Jess and not let her break the law. Liam reminds him that Jess let herself into Graceland. “How about I do me and you do you?” isn’t something Ethan wants to hear from Liam, and it seems to upset him. After Liam tells Ethan if he can’t handle it maybe he should bail out, Ethan blurts out that Jess is undocumented which catches Liam by surprise.

Ethan, visibly upset, shows up at Jess’s place and tells her what he did. She brushes it off like it’s not a big deal.

Jess goes to see Liam and tells him she knows what Ethan told him. He is her oldest friend, but she wishes he hadn’t done that. Liam admits if he knew that, he wouldn’t have let her go inside Graceland. Jess confesses that’s exactly why she doesn’t like to tell people right away.

Jess thought she knew all there was to know about her family, but now knows she was wrong. She believes the only thing that can help her figure out her family is finding the treasure.

Liam’s able to clean up the voices on the recording and it’s Elvis Presley claiming to have a message from Miss Morning Dove White: “The twin-tongued serpent’s tail is revealed in fair weather by the bend in the new found land.”

Kacey suggests to a sulking Billie that maybe there isn’t any treasure. Maybe the Daughters of the Plumed Serpent put these clues out there to keep the Conquistadors busy. After quoting Nelson Mandela, they raise a glass to Nate. Just then Billie receives an alert on her phone. She listens to the recording of Elvis…the same one Jess and Liam just heard.

Sulking time’s over for Billie.
