‘Becoming Elizabeth’ Episode 1 Recap: “Keep Your Knife Bright”

Becoming Elizabeth Episode 1 Recap

Starz’s new historical drama Becoming Elizabeth episode one opens in January 1547 in England. A carriage makes its way through the night and it’s revealed to be carrying the dead body of King Henry VIII. He leaves behind a childless Queen and a country in turmoil.

King Henry VIII’s survivors include his three children: Princess Mary (a Catholic), the daughter of Henry’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon; Princess Elizabeth (a Protestant), the daughter of Henry’s second wife, Anne Boleyn; and Prince Edward (also a Protestant), the son of Henry’s third wife, Jane Seymour. The siblings are quickly rounded up and informed their father is dead. Their uncle, Edward Seymour (the soon-to-be Duke of Somerset), bows down in front of Edward and says, “Long live the King.”

Edward Seymour (John Heffernan) acts as the new king’s governor and 14-year-old Elizabeth (Alicia von Rittberg) is understandably concerned the following morning when Edward rides off with her younger brother. Elizabeth’s upset they’re not being given a chance to grieve, however, her stepmother – King Henry’s sixth wife Queen Catherine Parr (Jessica Raine) – seems to rejoice in the death of her husband.

Catherine appears to be celebrating his demise while in bed with her lover, Thomas Seymour (Tom Cullen). It was a loveless marriage and she’s dreamed of the day when she can be with Thomas. She expresses her desire for a quick marriage which should be a possibility given the fact Henry’s physical state made him unable to have sex. There’s absolutely no way she could be pregnant.

Thomas Seymour suggests she should be patient, but Catherine is anxious to tell young King Edward she wants to remarry. Again, Thomas suggests patience. “Telling” the new king anything is not a wise idea. King Edward VI needs to believe their marriage is his idea.

Catherine’s happy mood dampens a little when a servant informs the couple that Thomas’ older brother Edward Seymour got the jump on them by taking off during the night and rounding up the deceased king’s children. He’s taken on the task of guiding young Edward, a position Catherine believed would go to Thomas since he’s Edward’s favorite uncle.

Edward Seymour brings King Edward (Oliver Zetterstrom) to Whitehall Palace and reminds him he’s no longer a boy and should never cry. Edward Seymour takes this moment alone with his nephew to warn him he’s about to meet with the council made up of 16 men assigned by King Henry VIII. Edward Seymour suggests everyone will be scrambling to speak for their young King, and that King Edward should allow him to be his only voice.

A confused Edward appears to agree.

Elizabeth is brought to Chelsea Manor, Catherine Parr’s residence, and struggles to determine her place in this political game she’s been thrust into. Elizabeth is aware there’s a target on her back, as well as on the backs of her siblings.

Catherine greets her stepdaughter with a smile, declaring she looks thin and sad. Elizabeth replies, “I am very grateful for your invitation to stay here at Chelsea with you, my loving mother.”

Catherine empathizes with Elizabeth’s position and warns her not to pay attention to the designs of men. Catherine only wants Elizabeth to be happy and safe with her at Chelsea.

Thomas Seymour’s also concerned about the size of the group chosen by King Henry VIII to assist Edward. He’s shocked to learn all 16 have given Edward Seymour authorization to act as King Edward’s voice.

Edward Seymour begins the council meeting by introducing King Edward. The newly crowned monarch thanks them for their service to his father and names Edward as Lord Protector. Thomas Seymour speaks up and reminds his brother they share the same sister – King Edward’s mother. Therefore, they should both be Lord Protector.

No one responds or lends their support to Thomas, and his brother suggests he step outside to calm down. Thomas Seymour does so, upset he’s been outmaneuvered.

Later, Elizabeth wakes in the night to hear Thomas Seymour drunkenly singing, “God Save the King.” She rises from bed and greets him in the hallway, and he introduces himself. She remembers he’s her brother’s uncle and he jokes about being remembered for what he is rather than who he is.

Their lighthearted exchange comes to a close when Elizabeth’s lady in waiting Kat Ashley (Alexandra Gilbreath) suggests she head back to bed.

Catherine also rises due to all this racket, and Kat mutters about the lack of decorum.

Once Catherine and Thomas are alone, he informs her his brother’s been named Lord Protector. “He is in and we are out,” says Thomas. However, Catherine believes they’re still in the game since they have Elizabeth staying under their roof. That brings a smile to Thomas’ face and he caresses Catherine’s cheek and leans in for a kiss. She laughs and pushes him away, reminding him he’s drunk.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth lies in bed and also smiles as she recalls her conversation with Thomas.

The following morning, she stands over Thomas as he sleeps in a great room. They once again engage in lighthearted banter, and he wonders if her tutors have assigned him as something to study. Catherine joins them and asks if he’s apologized for making a disgrace of himself the previous evening. When Catherine suggests Elizabeth may be led to believe her brother’s governed by the “feckless and the witless,” Thomas replies, “That may well be true.”

Elizabeth laughs before she can catch herself.

Drink’s gotten the best of him and Thomas races from the room to throw up. Catherine follows and warns him to stop outrageously flirting with Elizabeth. She’s in a teasing mood as she informs her lover that his brother will be taking off after the coronation to do battle in Scotland. Apparently, Edward Seymour’s always ready for a fight.

That means King Edward will be alone without his Lord Protector, giving Thomas a chance to renew his relationship with his nephew. Catherine offers him her hand and would like to marry soon. “My brother’s going away, you say. Well, best marry you while I have the chance then,” responds Thomas.

A gorgeous smile lights up Catherine’s face.

Elsewhere, young King Edward’s handed a drawing of Mary, Queen of Scots, and he’s unimpressed. He reminds Edward Seymour that he was only a prince when he was betrothed to Mary. He’s also upset an army will be needed to fetch his five-year-old future queen. Edward doesn’t believe they can afford a war at this time and warns his Lord Protector there will be serious consequences if he loses.

Edward Seymour understands Scotland wants Mary to solidify a Scottish-French alliance by marrying French royalty. That would weaken England’s standing and Seymour will not allow that to happen.

A lavish ceremony with acrobatics and dancing is enjoyed by the court as Edward’s officially crowned king. During the ceremony, Princess Mary (Romola Garai) is drawn into a conversation with Ambassador Guzman (Olivier Huband) who desires to know who Spain believes rules England – the Lord Protector or the child King? Mary’s opinion as the daughter of Catherine of Aragon will sway Spain’s decision on what to believe.

“My brother is king. Your and my opinions, Ambassador, are best kept to ourselves for they are of no worth,” replies Princess Mary.

We’re provided our first look at Lady Jane Grey (Bella Ramsey) as she’s manipulated by her father, Henry (Leo Bill), into standing near young King Edward.

Princess Elizabeth leaves the festivities and wanders into the council room. She takes a seat at the head of the table and is surprised when Thomas Seymour appears. They have a brief conversation in which Princess Elizabeth confesses she longs to be able to make decisions for herself. However, she doesn’t admit to wanting power.

Thomas Seymour reveals many doors have opened since her father’s death and he’s unsure which ones to walk through. They discuss her father and Thomas assures her that while there’s a new king, her father will never be forgotten.

Princess Elizabeth cries, upset that although she was his daughter, she barely knew him. “Every lord and lady out there knew him better than me,” says Elizabeth, sobbing. “His children stand knowing least about him.”

Thomas attempts to comfort Elizabeth by explaining we always learn much more about our parents after they’re dead. And that’s even more true when it comes to kings.

The talk turns to marriage and Thomas confesses he earned a smack in the face from King Henry (and was sent away) for wanting to marry someone he shouldn’t.

The following day Catherine compliments Princess Elizabeth on her writing, recalling the beautiful book she made her father. Elizabeth wonders if her father had that book with him when he died and Catherine confesses she wasn’t with him at the time of his death. However, she assures Elizabeth that King Henry cherished it.

Elizabeth smiles and asks if they’ll be seeing more of the Lord High Admiral. Catherine can’t hide her shock and although it’s obvious she was unaware that is Thomas Seymour’s new title, she claims it slipped her mind.

Becoming Elizabeth Episode 1 Recap

Later, Princess Elizabeth pretends her interest in Thomas Seymour only has to do with wanting to know more about the court. However, she’s unable to conceal the blush on her cheeks or the way her eyes sparkle when she thinks of Thomas. Yet, she’s also fully aware of her mother’s sordid reputation and worries people will also believe she’s also a whore.

Princess Elizabeth confesses she believes Thomas would make a perfect husband, given both their statuses.

While Elizabeth’s musing about marrying Thomas, the Lord High Admiral and Catherine Parr are secretly meeting with a priest while Thomas’ brother is off in Scotland. After much discussion, Catherine bribes the priest to perform the ceremony.

They agree to wait until the time is right to tell King Edward.

Edward Seymour and 16,000 men are prepared to take on the Scottish army in Scotland at Pinkie Cleugh. Pedro (Ekow Quartey) informs Edward he can end this war before it begins by agreeing to single combat. Edward declines, preferring to do battle.

Back at Chelsea Manor, Princess Elizabeth plays the piano while everyone relaxes. Thomas’ arrival makes at least two of the women giddy and Elizabeth sparks to the idea he’d like to prove his worth to her in a tournament after his brother returns. Thomas goes on and on about his impressive qualities, including his outstanding horsemanship skills.

Elizabeth believes he may be quite good at many things but hints that she’s a better rider. He bows to her skills and asks to be permitted to ride with her one day. Catherine drags Thomas away, obviously uncomfortable over the amount of flirting going on.

After Catherine and Thomas leave the room, Elizabeth and Kat discuss his apparent interest in her. Both women assume Elizabeth’s the only reason Thomas keeps showing up at Chelsea Manor.

Catherine pushes Thomas away, reminding him they must be the ones who break the news to King Edward. She chides him over his flirtatious behavior, but Thomas only has eyes for his new bride and pays little attention to her advice to leave Elizabeth alone.

A toast is made to King Edward VI as England’s resounding victory over Scotland is announced. Edward confides in Thomas that he doesn’t believe he needs to actually wed Mary, Queen of Scots; she simply needs to be brought to England. Thomas points out he needs to marry someone and Edward wonders if he can just marry for love.

They discuss Jane Grey as a potential wife, and Edward recalls playing cards with her as a child. That’s about all he knows about Jane.

King Edward thinks it’s time for his sisters to marry and that Princess Mary will need a strong man to bring her to “the true faith.” Edward hints that maybe Thomas is that man but Thomas brushes that off as Princess Elizabeth stares at him from across the table.

Moments later, Catherine and Thomas have a whispered conversation away from the table. Catherine thinks the timing is right to speak with King Edward. Thomas reminds her that what they’ve done is treason, and Catherine wants to hurry and talk to King Edward before the Lord Protector returns.

Catherine hurries away with King Edward as Princess Elizabeth takes the opportunity to chat with Thomas. He asks her to accompany him to speak to her brother and she follows, unaware of what’s about to be revealed.

As Thomas and Elizabeth join King Edward, the young monarch is rejoicing over Catherine’s marriage.

The mood is much darker when Thomas speaks with his brother. The Lord Protector forbids Thomas and Catherine from ever seeing King Edward again. Thomas angers his brother even more when he argues that he’d never have been allowed to marry either Princess Mary or Princess Elizabeth. Edward’s shocked his brother would even consider such a marriage a remote possibility.

Edward doesn’t believe his brother married Catherine for love, but Thomas reminds him they’ve been in love since before she married King Henry. There’s no love lost between the brothers and Thomas expresses his hope that Edward will ultimately die in war.

News arrives that Mary, Queen of Scots, has fled to France. King Edward’s enraged that they won the war but still Mary has escaped to France. He didn’t want to take her as his bride, but he also didn’t want France to have her. Money’s been wasted on war and King Edward’s upset that he announced they were victorious only to learn they won nothing.

Meanwhile, Lady Jane Grey is moved into Chelsea Manor, much to Elizabeth’s dismay. Jane explains she’s being put under Catherine’s care because she’s in the line of succession, and Elizabeth points out she, Mary, and any children of Edward’s are ahead of her in that line. Jane argues Edward doesn’t have children and there’s a possibility both Mary and Elizabeth could be found illegitimate.

Elizabeth rushes to see Catherine and confronts her about her quick marriage after King Henry’s death and about moving a child who wants Edward’s throne into their home. Thomas makes his presence known and takes full blame for Jane moving into Chelsea Manor. He’ll move her out if Elizabeth so desires.

Thomas asks for a moment alone with Elizabeth and Catherine steps out. He confesses King Edward is interested in Jane, describing the girl as coming from an excellent family and being as meek as a mouse. Thomas is able to make Elizabeth laugh as they talk about their strong personalities, and then he reveals King Edward thought maybe he should marry Princess Mary. Thomas had no interest in that arrangement; plus his brother informed him he wasn’t meant to marry a princess.

“Anyway, if I had the choice of sisters do you think I would have chosen her?” asks Thomas.

The mood turns seductive as Thomas strokes her face and adds, “If only we were all free…free to act as we chose.”

Elizabeth moves toward him for a kiss but Thomas pulls away.

Leah Rimini’s In, Matthew Morrison’s Out on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’

Fox’s long-delayed 17th season of So You Think You Can Dance has subbed in Emmy Award winner Leah Remini for exiting judge Matthew Morrison. Remini will be taking a seat alongside SYTYCD fan-favorite Stephen “tWitch” Boss and JoJo Siwa beginning with the show’s 300th episode.

Matthew Morrison’s exit was announced on May 25, 2022, with the former Glee star saying he’d broken “competition production protocols.” Morrison’s initial statement offered little in the way of explanation but he did express his regret in having to leave the series.

“After filming the audition rounds for the show and completing the selection of the 12 finalists, I did not follow competition production protocols, preventing me from being able to judge the competition fairly. I cannot apologize enough to all involved and I will be watching alongside you all on what I know will be one of the best seasons yet,” stated Morrison.

As more details emerged, it appeared Morrison had inappropriate interactions with a female contestant. He eventually took to Instagram to explain his side of the story.

“It’s really unfortunate that I have to sit here and defend myself and my family against blatantly untrue statements made anonymously, but I have nothing to hide. So, in the interest of transparency, I will read to you the one message that I wrote to a dancer on the show:

‘Hey, it’s Matthew. If you don’t mind, would love to get your number and talk you through some things.’ The end.”

He continued: “I sent this because this dancer and I both share a mutual respect for a choreographer that I’ve known for over 20 years and I was trying to help her get a job as a choreographer on the show. It’s devastating that we live in this world where gossip rules and people’s lives are thrown around as clickbait.”

Whatever the case/cause, Morrison’s off Fox’s dance competition series and Remini is in. She’ll debut as a regular judge on the Wednesday, June 15, 2022 episode which will introduce the top 12 dancers.

“I am thrilled to join So You Think You Can Dance on its milestone 300th episode,” said Remini. “I look forward to guiding these incredibly talented artists through this competition as a fan of the show and a great admirer of dancers. I can’t wait to see the artistry that the contestants bring to the stage!”

So You Think You Can Dance is experiencing the lowest ratings of its 17-season run. Season 17 episode one only drew in 2.1 million viewers and is down 23% compared to season 16’s numbers.

BTS Anthology Album ‘Proof’ Arrives with New Music Video

The wait is over! Grammy-nominated supergroup BTS is back with their new anthology album Proof out today. It’s been 400+ days since their last album BE was released in 2020…but who’s counting?

Their lead single “Yet To Come (The Most Beautiful Moment)” is accompanied by a new music video that pays homage to their nine-year career. The new video includes references to past music videos, including their debut song, “No More Dream,” which was released on June 13, 2013. “Yet To Come (The Most Beautiful Moment)” is described by Big Hit Music as “a medium-tempo, alternative hip-hop track.” Big Hit Music goes on to say, “Through this song, BTS take the past difficulties and challenges they faced in stride, and composedly sing that your best moment is yet to come and your tomorrow will shine brighter. The hearty melody and hopeful message sung in BTS’s soothing voices warm the hearts of listeners.”

The “Yet To Come (The Most Beautiful Moment)” music video debuted at midnight and has already gathered 34 million views and counting in its first 12 hours. In addition, the lead single and album have already reached number one on US iTunes. “Yet To Come” also reached number one on iTunes in 92 other countries.

Proof also contains two other new songs: “Run BTS” and “For Youth.”

“Run BTS” is the opening song on disc 2 in the 3-disc album. “A powerful up-tempo hip-hop genre track. It narrates the seven members who have been there for one another throughout their journey as a team, and the determination of BTS to keep running as they always have. The lyrics unfold as if BTS are telling a story of their own passage of time, and well-reflect the unique characters of BTS, growing together as one team, and moving forward without settling,” per Big Hit Music.

“For Youth” finishes off disc 3 and is dedicated to their fans, ARMY. The track takes a trip down memory lane, beginning with audio of fans singing “EPILOGUE: Young Forever” from BTS’s 2016 album. Big Hit Music says, “The song expresses BTS’s gratitude to their ARMY for giving them a brilliant youth.”

As Showbiz Junkies previously reported, Proof comes with three CDs that contain songs each member picked out from past albums over their nine-year career as well as unreleased demos from past songs. The demos are available on CD only. The other songs are available on digital and streaming platforms.

Upon the album’s release, members of BTS expressed their thoughts and feelings:

RM said, “I feel thrilled every time we release new music for the first time. I hope many people will enjoy the album. Proof is a special album that closes the first chapter of BTS before going into our 10th year. We especially paid more attention to the lyrics as our message to our fans, ARMY who have been with us for nine years, is the key to this album.”

Proof walks through BTS’s history, so it reminds me of nine-years of memories. This will be one of those albums I listen to a lot,” said Jin, adding, “It will be fun to listen to the unreleased tracks.”

SUGA said, “We carefully finalized the order of the tracks as the album speaks of BTS’s history. My suggestion would be to listen to the album in the order.” He also mentioned, “We are honored to capture our nine-year journey in this album. Listening to the album will trace you back in memory and the paths BTS have walked.”

“I’m happy and excited that we are finally releasing a new album after a long time,” stated j-hope. “I just want to enjoy the album with our ARMY. Proof is a chronicle of BTS and ARMY, and it is a special album as it contains all our memories together. It is the soul of BTS, so I hope many people like it!”

Jimin said, “I feel happy and strange at the same time as it’s been a while since we released a new album. Proof holds a special place in our hearts as it includes the past lead singles and previously unreleased tracks. While creating this album, we spent meaningful times together looking after one another and deeply connecting with one another.”

“As the album represents our past nine years, this is a gift for our fans who have been supporting us and creating our history together,” said V.

And Jung Kook said, “It feels like we just finished writing a big book. As always, we gave a lot of thoughts into every detail of this album while working on it. It is a reflection of the time we spent together as BTS and the emotions we felt throughout our nine-year journey.”

‘Alone’ Season 9 Episode 3 Recap: “Law of the Land”

Alone Season 9 Jessie

The History Channel’s Alone season nine episode three picks up the action on Day 12. Episode two included the first tap out by a survivalist (Jacques), and by the end of episode three the contestant count remains at nine.

Episode three – “Law of the Land” – survival tidbits included that berm shelters (like Jessie’s) create a natural thermal mass to help absorb/store heat. Some of the contestants are building on a muskeg – a bog made up of water and dead vegetation. And willow branches are good for building because of their flexibility. The episode also confirmed participants can bring up to two pounds of snare wire as one of their 10 survival items.

Episode three focused on Jessie, Igor, Adam, Benji, Juan Pablo, and Karie Lee.

Jessie, Age 49, Pagosa Springs, CO

Day 12: Jessie’s determined to finally get to work on her long-term shelter. Her short-term shelter is close by and her long-term shelter will utilize four existing trees as her structural support. She believes incorporating living trees will make the structure more stable.

The weather’s unpredictable and Jessie wants a shelter that will be insulted and away from the moisture. She admits she’s a workaholic, just like her family. Her mom was a single parent who loved the outdoors, and Jessie thinks about her struggling (putting herself through college, raising a child without any help, etc.) when things get tough.

Day 13: She’s happy to have found huge bunches of bunchberries and will feast on them for lunch. She confesses she’s tired of them but at least they’re providing sustenance. She’s lost 15 pounds and hasn’t been taking in many calories. She didn’t expect the food situation to be this tough.

Jessie hasn’t seen any rabbits or grouse, but there are squirrels nearby. She has experience setting traps and snares, and sets up 15 snare lines on fallen trees. A squirrel yells at her as she works, and she confesses she doesn’t like killing things but knows it’s necessary.

A short while later she gets her first squirrel. Jessie thanks the squirrel for her evening meal of 270 calories. It tastes like chicken.

Jessie hopes that once she’s finished with her lodge, she can turn her attention to getting more (and larger) game.

Day 14: Today’s task is to get the support poles in place and get a roof up. She’s designing a shelter that doesn’t really fit any one particular style. It’s sort of a lean-to design but has other elements.

She’s burning 375 calories an hour working on a shelter and admits it’s going to be more work than she initially thought.

Day 15: Jessie gets in a little sunbathing before doing any work. Break over, she checks her traps and finds one dead squirrel. A live one screams at her and then approaches the dead squirrel. It appears the squirrel’s trying to get her fallen friend to get up, but it doesn’t budge. It sits just inches away and chatters, a sound that’s absolutely heartbreaking. Jessie apologizes and feels bad about seeing what she believes is the dead squirrel’s mom trying to help her dead child.

Jessie understands that’s how it works but acknowledges these animals have feelings. “Every day we live other things must die, and that is the law of nature,” says Jessie. “That is the way things work, and we don’t realize in our modern lives that the same thing is happening indirectly because of our actions.”

Alone Season 9 Igor

Igor, Age 39, Bountiful, UT

Day 12: Igor’s eating bladderwhack seawood, creating a stew he calls his staple food. His attempts at hunting and fishing have thus far been unsuccessful. He’s lost 19 pounds in 12 days and still hasn’t built a permanent shelter.

Igor’s shelter will eventually be a log cabin because it’s sturdy enough for the area. The winds and animals won’t be able to get to him, however, he’s disappointed that he’s not further along. The area’s so squishy he’s decided he needs to build a floor. It’s not ideal – and it’s a lot of work – but a floor’s necessary because of how damp the ground is.

Igor finishes up for the day and spots a spruce grouse. He tosses his saw and makes the kill, noting it’s the first time he’s killed with a saw. The grouse is amazing and Igor believes it’s an indication he’s building in the right location.

Alone Season 9 Adam

Adam, Age 36, Fayetteville, AR

Day 13: Adam’s built a decent shelter and decides to add a stone fireplace using cob (clay, sand, and straw). His shelter doesn’t allow for the smoke to escape since it’s well-sealed, so he needs to add a chimney. Adam explains he’s using willow and a wattle and daub design to build the fireplace and chimney’s walls.

Adam’s adhering to a slow and steady pace and says he doesn’t get easily flustered.

As he’s working on his shelter, he hears a grouse. Instead of potentially wasting an arrow, he uses his throwing stick. It misses. Fortunately, he’s been seeing more grouse near his site but his success has basically come from fishing.

He makes a weather flap for his chimney and then uses his chimney for the first time. It’s holding up well and the structure’s smoke-free.

Day 15: Adam’s come up with a vise system to help him work on flies. He uses part of his boot’s inner liner to create different types of flies – some that will sink and some that will float.

Adam’s hungry and doesn’t have any food stored up as he heads out to fish. The weather’s perfect (although it’s just above freezing) and he thinks he’s doing great thus far. Winning would transform his family’s lives; his parents get by on just $20,000 a year.

He doesn’t get any nibbles and decides to put up a casting rod. The river level’s dropping and he’s worried his fishing opportunities are drying up. He’s only fishing in two small areas and it’s possible that soon all of the fish will be gone.

Adam takes a break to do “The Hunger Dance” since songs always make the cut on Alone. Adam’s musical talent is about a two out of 10 – he definitely shouldn’t give up his day job.

Day 16: Adam does some target practice because his aim’s off. He’s decided he’ll do this every day to get better at hunting. His fishing spot’s no longer a viable option and he wants to turn his attention to finding a black bear.

While checking out the area he finds his first bolete mushroom. It’s old but still edible.

Adam doesn’t believe he can survive 80+ days without bagging a bear. He finds a good spot on the plateau to spot game and is pleased to find some bear scat that appears fresh.

Adam decides to keep exploring since he’s finding bear signs. Going all in is the only way he’ll be able to survive and he firmly believes just sitting in his shelter preserving calories isn’t the way to succeed at Alone.

Adam’s practice pays off when he shoots a grouse. It’s his first grouse of the adventure after shooting at nearly a dozen.

Adam stuffs his grouse with cranberries and other items before cooking the bird. Grouse has a gamey flavor but Adam describes it as tasting amazing.

Alone Season 9 Benji

Benji, Age 46, Bellevue, ID

Day 14: Benji admires the beauty of his area and the gorgeous sky while doing his video log. Benji thinks it’s time to get serious about building a debris hut since the weather’s going to turn much colder real soon. He finds a spot among trees that are close to the beach and determines how to situate his structure based on the wind direction and other factors (including the lack of animal tracks).

He initially concentrated on getting familiar with his area and finding food, but now he’s ready to work on his permanent shelter. He won’t be making a raised platform or a bed because he feels more comfortable on the ground.

Benji’s island doesn’t have much in the way of animals but it does have squirrels. He shoots one, cooks it up, and confesses he’s not a big organ eater. However, he will eat the squirrel’s organs because they’re loaded with vitamins and minerals.

Benji’s feeling amazing and happy about the amount of food he’s eating. (He’s lost 19 pounds.) “I feel more alive every day I’m out here,” says Benji. He’s can’t wait to have Labrador try and break him and is determined to stick it out.

Day 16: Benji’s having incredible luck fishing and in fact reels in so many that he creates a fish cache to store his surplus. Although he came to hunt, fishing’s providing him with plenty of food.

He spots a beaver trail and follows it to the creek. Benji explains the best way to hunt game is to find a high-traffic area and an ambush spot, and he figures out the perfect place to try and find a beaver.

Benji sees one not too far away and takes a shot. It misses but he’s able to get off a second shot that strikes the beaver but doesn’t kill him. The injured beaver disappears into the water and Benji tries to figure out his location. He watches the water but it doesn’t pop up. Benji looks around the surrounding area and doesn’t have any luck there, either.

It’s getting dark so he gives up for now and will search again in the morning. He hopes the beaver expires peacefully.

Alone Season 9 Juan

Juan Pablo, Age 30, Pinawa, CAN

Day 14: We catch up with Juan as he’s just missed shooting a squirrel. He’s explored upriver and hasn’t found anything, so he sets out in a different direction. It’s difficult to walk in his area and he hasn’t eaten much since he shot a grouse 10 days ago.

He comes upon a bear track that’s bigger than his hand which means it could weigh 400+ pounds. Juan’s happy with the discovery because he’s looking forward to hunting a bear since that would mean he’d have a month of food. However, a bear near camp is too dangerous. He sets up some of the cans he found and hangs them so they’ll make noise.

Juan then comes up with the idea of making an actual bell with an old pan and a huge nail.

Alone Season 9 Karie

Karie Lee, Age 57, Sandpoint, ID

Day 15: Karie washes her hair before working on her day 15 goal of building her permanent shelter. She claims the land dictated how to build the shelter and she’s going to use clay to hold in the heat. She feels blessed with the abundance the land has to give.

She places the tarp over the shelter as the temperature falls. Karie hasn’t been eating much and believes she needs to take the time out to just “be.”

Karie spends her first night in her new shelter and is happy to finally have a fire inside as she gets ready to call it a night.

She’s discovered that she’s a perfectionist and she’ll need to back off that in order to survive. Now that the shelter’s built she’ll focus on getting food.

‘Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank’ Trailer – Michael Cera’s an Unlikely Hero

Paramount Pictures just released a new trailer for the animated action-comedy Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank and my takeaway is that I need to incorporate “what the mother father cocker spaniel” into my list of frequently used curses. Samuel L. Jackson utters that G-rated string in lieu of his trademarked R-rated expletive, and that alone is reason enough to enjoy checking out the trailer multiple times.

In addition to Samuel L. Jackson, the voice cast includes Michael Cera (in the title role), animal advocate Ricky Gervais, and George Takei. Mel Brooks, Aasif Mandvi, Gabriel Iglesias, Djimon Hounsou, Michelle Yeoh, Kylie Kuioka, and Cathy Shim also provide the voices of Paws of Fury characters.

The team of Rob Minkoff, Mark Koetsier, and Chris Bailey directed, with Minkoff, Adam Nagle, Peter Nagle, Guy Collins, Yair Landau and Susan Purcell produced. Adrian Politowski, Alex Schwartz, Ben White, Reginald Hudlin, Wang Zhongjun, Wang Zhonglei, and Mel Brooks executive produced.

Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank will open in theaters on July 15, 2022.

Paramount Pictures’ official synopsis:

“A hard-on-his-luck hound Hank (Cera) finds himself in a town full of cats who need a hero to defend them from a ruthless villain’s (Gervais) evil plot to wipe their village off the map. With help from a reluctant teacher (Jackson) to train him, our underdog must assume the role of town samurai and team up with the villagers to save the day. The only problem… cats hate dogs!”
