Review: ‘The Bad Guys’ Animated Comedy

The Bad Guys Movie Review
Tarantula (Awkwafina), Snake (Marc Maron), Shark (Craig Robinson), Piranha (Anthony Ramos) and Wolf (Sam Rockwell) in ‘The Bad Guys’ (Photo © 2022 DreamWorks Animation LLC)

The big bad wolf isn’t huffing and puffing anymore. Instead, he’s planning the perfect heists with his crew in DreamWorks Animation’s The Bad Guys.

We jump into the story with Mr. Wolf (voiced by Sam Rockwell) treating his friend Mr. Snake (voiced by Marc Maron) to a birthday meal just before pulling off another successful bank heist and outrunning the police.

Back at their secret lair, Mr. Wolf and Mr. Snake are joined by the rest of their crime crew – Mr. Shark (voiced by Craig Robinson), Mr. Piranha (voiced by Anthony Ramos) and Ms. Tarantula (voiced by Awkwafina) – are enjoying the media coverage of their latest job when they get the idea for the biggest heist of their career. However, after many successful years of brilliant heists, the unthinkable happens
the most-wanted villains get caught.

The quick-thinking Mr. Wolf strikes a deal with the Governor Ms. Foxington (voiced by Zazie Beetz). To keep them from going to the big house, The Bad Guys will go good. At first skeptical but convinced by the city’s ideal citizen and do-gooder, Professor Marmalade (voiced by Richard Ayoade) – an arrogant but likable guinea pig – the Governor agrees.

So, under the guidance of the Professor the Bad Guys set out to con the world into thinking they’ve turned over a new leaf. But when Mr. Wolf finds his tail wagging and getting a warm tingling feeling by doing a good deed, he starts to wonder if going good might actually be the right move after all.

Based on a series of children’s books, The Bad Guys is a slick, fast-paced, colorful animated heist film with fun, wise-cracking characters, and hilarious action scenes. It’s Looney Tunes meets Oceans 11 with a wonderful voice cast.

Sam Rockwell is perfect in bringing Mr. Wolf to life, playing him as a stylish, charming conman and pickpocket whose only loyalty is to his partners in crime. Marc Maron is crabby and sly as Snake, the safecracker of the group and perhaps the baddest member of the group. The chemistry between Wolf and Snake is reminiscent of George Clooney and Brad Pitt in the Oceans films.

The animation is bright, edgy, and dynamic, with the look and feel of a well-produced Saturday morning cartoon in the same league as the classic Looney Tunes or Tom and Jerry.

In addition to being highly entertaining, the film, at its core, has solid messages for kids about not judging a book by its cover and about staying true to your friends. Both messages are delivered without The Bad Guys ever getting preachy or heavy-handed.

Zany and clever, The Bad Guys is a crowd-pleasing, vibrant animated adventure that’s sure to have the audience laughing and rooting for this colorful pack of creatures right up until the credits roll.

GRADE: B+

MPAA Rating: PG for action and rude humor

‘The Resident’ Season 5 Episode 20 Preview: “Fork in the Road” Photos

Cade and Conrad take on prescription fraud on Fox’s The Resident season five episode 20. “Fork in the Road” will air on Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at 8pm ET/PT.

Season five stars Matt Czuchry as Dr. Conrad Hawkins, Malcolm-Jamal Warner as Dr. AJ Austin, Bruce Greenwood as Dr. Randolph Bell, Jane Leeves as Dr. Kit Voss, and Manish Dayal is Dr. Devon Pravesh. Jessica Lucas plays Dr. Billie Sutton, Anuja Joshi is Dr. Leela Devi, and Miles Fowler is Trevor.

“Fork In The Road” Plot: Conrad and Cade work with a Medicare patient who sheds some light on the inner workings of the prescription fraud situation. Meanwhile, Leela works herself to the brink of exhaustion to avoid having a conversation with Devon and eventually makes mistakes on her cases. Then, the Raptor and Padma try to compromise on how to move forward and Kit and Bell make a big decision about their future.

The Season 5 Plot, Courtesy of Fox:

Entering its fifth season, The Resident continues to shine a light on the daily heroism of our health care workers. The provocative medical drama follows the doctors and nurses at Chastain Memorial Hospital as they face personal and professional challenges and fight for their patients’ health.

Season four saw a multitude of highs and lows as the heroes at Chastain struggled to overcome the impossible, including the unprecedented and devastating Covid-19 pandemic. Now, in a propulsive and emotional season five, the ante is upped, as the doctors continue to save patients and fight corruption in the healthcare system, this time with a partner. The alliance with Big Pharma that found a cure for sickle cell disease last season proves in season five to be a very sharp double-edged sword.

The season kicks off when a mysterious ransomware attack threatens the hospital, and DR. DEVON PRAVESH (Dayal) and Chastain’s recently appointed CEO, DR. KIT VOSS (Leeves), must make high-stakes, split-second decisions with lives in the balance. Meanwhile, DR. CONRAD HAWKINS (Czuchry) and NURSE PRACTITIONER NICOLETTE NEVIN’s (Emily VanCamp) attempts to navigate parenthood, marriage and work-life balance take a shocking turn when Conrad is forced to make a life-changing choice that will alter the course of their family forever.

After the unwanted arrival of DR. BILLIE SUTTON’s (Lucas) biological son, she is forced to confront her past head-on in hopes of healing. Luckily, she’ll have help with the emergence of a new friendship – and rivalry – with DR. AJ AUSTIN (Malcolm-Jamal Warner), who unknowingly takes an interest in Billie’s son, TREVOR (Fowler). Elsewhere, a wrench is thrown in the plans of DR. LEELA DEVI (Joshi), when an unannounced visitor threatens her new relationship, and DR. RANDOLPH BELL (Greenwood) moves forward with a surprising love interest.

A new wrinkle five episodes into the season will challenge audience expectations and reveal new truths about our characters. Old relationships will be tested, new ones formed, and the emergence of a widespread Medicare fraud scheme ensures Chastain will never be the same.
