Read no further unless you are completely caught up on History’s Vikings season four through episode 15 which aired on December 28, 2016. (FYI – The featured photo is not of the dead character.) The devastating episode titled ‘All His Angels’ was one of the season’s best, focusing almost exclusively on the death of one of the show’s most vital and beloved characters. Ragnar Lothbrok, played by Travis Fimmel, was given one of the most brutal death scenes of any lead character on TV. Tortured by King Aelle and his men, Ragnar’s nearly lifeless body was then tossed into a pit of snakes where he was repeatedly bitten before finally succumbing to death.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Fimmel and series creator/writer Michael Hirst discussed Ragnar’s death scene which was based on historical records.
“Ragnar was so ready to die and was happy to die there. He feels like his whole plan has worked, and his kids were coming to avenge him and get revenge on Ecbert,” explained Fimmel who, according to Hirst, had “strong ideas” about how Ragnar’s death should play out in the series. Fimmel was also fully on board with the idea of Ragnar’s death not coming at the end of the season.
Speaking with THR, Hirst explained why he chose not to make Ragnar’s death the focus of the season four finale. “This is the saga of Ragnar and his sons. I didn’t want to suggest to the audience that the death of Ragnar meant some huge breaking point in that saga; it’s just part of the weight. So Ragnar’s sons will continue the saga. This isn’t the end of Ragnar Lothbrok. Ragnar will live on in his fame. He will live on because he was the most famous Viking of the time. But he also, of course, will live on through his sons. I never wanted this story to end when Ragnar dies physically. We’ve shot roughly 25 more hours of TV now after Ragnar’s death, and we are a long way down the line. We are really embracing the sons, but Ragnar hasn’t gone away, because Ragnar is still the inspiration.”
Vikings has killed off major characters before, but with Ragnar fans are holding out hope Travis Fimmel can somehow return as a physical presence (not just in visions or dreams) to the series. Unfortunately, Fimmel put an end to those hopes by telling THR he is not returning to the series. “It sort of doesn’t make sense. My character is an atheist, so I’m not going to be coming up in any ghost, religious ghostly images or anything. I think you have to be very religious for people to have that belief in you,” explained Fimmel.

Sure, 2016 had its share of new TV shows that weren’t worthy of investing any time in checking out. Fortunately, among this year’s crop of new TV shows were more hits than misses. Overall, 2016 was a pretty great year for new scripted shows, making it difficult to whittle the list of the best new TV shows of 2016 down to just 10. Less difficult was deciding which new series earned the top spot as American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson was an easy choice. The series not only made viewers finally understand what lead prosecutor Marcia Clark was up against, but also kept the audience engaged in the murder trial even while the outcome was a done deal.
The ranking of the shows are interchangeable after you get past the first three positions on this Top 10 New TV Shows list. And, in fact, I moved every show ranked #4 through #10 to different spots before locking down the list.

Caught in the middle of the two priests is the Rance family, who are members of Tomas’ parish. On the surface, they’re a normal, American family, but all is not as it seems in this household. The patriarch, Henry Rance, is recovering from a traumatic injury. Eldest daughter Katherine has become a recluse who refuses to leave her room. Robert Redford and Jane Fonda in ‘Our Souls at Night’ (Photo credit: Kerry Brown/Netflix)
Netflix has just unveiled the first official photo from the original movie, Our Souls at Night. The dramatic film is based on the novel by Kent Haruf and was adapted for the screen by the writing team of Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber (The Fault in Our Stars, Paper Towns, The Spectacular Now). The Netflix movie reunites actors Robert Redford and Jane Fonda who worked together in 1979’s The Electric Horseman, 1967’s Barefoot in the Park, and 1966’s The Chase.
Our Souls at Night is being directed by Ritesh Batra (The Sense of an Ending, The Lunchbox). The cast also includes two-time Oscar nominee Bruce Dern (Nebraska, Coming Home), Judy Greer (Archer, Jurassic World), Matthias Schoenaerts (The Danish Girl and the upcoming Lewis and Clark mini-series), and Iain Armitage (Big Little Lies).
The Netflix original film will premiere in 2017.
The Plot:Our Souls at Night is set in Colorado and begins when Addie Moore (Jane Fonda) pays an unexpected visit to a neighbor, Louis Waters (Robert Redford). Her husband died years ago, as did his wife, and in such a small town they’d been neighbors for decades, but had little contact. Their children live far away and they are all alone in their big houses. She seeks to establish a connection, and make the most of the rest of the time they have.
Amy Adams is earning Oscar buzz for her performance in Tom Ford’s edgy dramatic film, Nocturnal Animals, however it’s her work in Arrival that earned Adams the top spot on our 2016 Best Actresses list. Other actresses frequently popping up on year-end Top 10 lists who also made our Best Actresses list include Ruth Negga for her breakthrough performance in the compelling drama, Loving, and Annette Bening for leading the talented ensemble cast of 20th Century Women. Emma Stone seems to be on everyone’s short list as one of the favorites to land a Best Actress Oscar nomination for singing and dancing her way through La La Land, and she took fourth place on our Best Actresses list this year.
Isabelle Huppert is number five on our list for delivering a heartbreaking, genuine, and unflinchingly honest performance in Elle, which for some inexplicable reason was snubbed by Academy members who failed to give it a spot on the short list for Oscar consideration. And snagging the number six spot was Rachel Weisz for her outstanding portrayal of a writer who takes on a Holocaust denier in court. Our 2016 Best Actresses list also includes Natalie Portman who captured one of America’s most beloved First Ladies in Jackie as well as what some may consider to be a surprise appearance by Blake Lively at the number eight spot. Lively shouldered the load almost entirely by herself in the shark versus surfer thriller, The Shallows, and deserves recognition for making the film one of the year’s pleasant surprises.
Finishing out the Top 10 Best Actresses list in spots nine and 10 are Rebecca Hall for her outstanding work in the dramatic film, Christine, and Jessica Chastain for making us care about a ruthless lobbyist in Miss Sloane.

Lipstadt’s (Weisz) legal battle for historical truth against David Irving (Timothy Spall), who accused her of libel when she declared him a Holocaust denier. Hall) initiates a friendship which ultimately becomes yet another unrequited love. Disillusioned as her world continues to close in on her, Christine takes a dark and surprising turn.
Jessica Chastain – Miss Sloane

New legislation requiring more stringent background checks for gun purchases is gaining traction in the Senate, and Sloane is approached to spearhead the campaign, pitting her against formidable and powerful political opponents. Casey Affleck and Lucas Hedges in ‘Manchester by the Sea’ (Photo credit: Claire Folger, Courtesy of Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions)
It was surprisingly easy to pull together a Top 10 list of the best actors of 2016. There were 10 actors whose performances stood apart, and these performances weren’t all delivered in awards season dramas. Casey Affleck, the odds-on favor to win the Best Actor Academy Award, obviously made the cut for his moving portrayal of a man forced to re-engage with the world in Manchester by the Sea. Ryan Gosling also earned multiple awards nominations from critics groups as well as a Screen Actors Guild nomination for his outstanding performance in La La Land, and he makes our list for that romantic musical as well as the comedy, The Nice Guys. However, Colin Farrell also earned a spot on this Top 10 list and thus far his performance in The Lobster has gone largely unrecognized by awards bodies. Jesse Plemons, terrific in season two of Fargo, has also gone largely unrecognized other than a Spirit Awards Best Actor nomination for his stand-out work in Other People.
It seems even Ryan Reynolds is surprised by how many nominations Deadpool has received, and he made our list of best actors for bringing a trash-talking comic book character with a wicked sense of humor to life on the screen. The much-deserved buzz surrounding Viggo Mortensen’s portrayal of a dad living off the grid in Captain Fantastic (released in July) has been growing stronger following the release of all potential Oscar contenders. And while some awards prognosticators had Andrew Garfield listed as a potential Best Actor Oscar nominee for Martin Scorsese’s Silence, following that film’s unveiling the buzz has all but died out. Garfield still made our list for his portrayal of a conscientious objector in Hacksaw Ridge. And Joel Edgerton can always be counted on to deliver an outstanding performance and he did so once again in Loving, based on a true story.
Filling out the two remaining spots on our 2016 Best Actors list are Adam Driver for his breakthrough performance in the indie drama, Paterson, and Chris Pine for being the lead in one of the year’s most memorable films, Hell or High Water.
2016’s Top 10 Best Actors:
Casey Affleck – Manchester by the Sea
The Plot: After the death of his older brother Joe (Kyle Chandler), Lee Chandler (Affleck) is shocked to learn that Joe has made him sole guardian of his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Bonded by the man who held their family together, Lee and Patrick struggle to adjust to a world without him.
Ryan Gosling – La La Land (and The Nice Guys)
The La La Land Plot: La La Land tells the story of Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress, and Sebastian (Gosling), a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.

Their civil rights case, Loving v. STX Entertainment is returning to the world of Bad Moms with a 2017 sequel titled A Bad Moms Christmas. The sequel to the 2016 R-rated comedy will be released in theaters on November 3, 2017 and will reunite the first film’s stars Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn, and Kristen Bell. The holiday-themed adult comedy will be directed by Bad Moms‘ writers/directors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore.
“This is a brand that has enormous goodwill all over the world, so expanding and extending the Bad Moms franchise in an authentic and irreverent way has been a priority for our team. Jon and Scott have a truly hysterical story that was pure perfection,” stated STX Entertainment Motion Picture Group Chairman Adam Fogelson. “Mila, Kristen and Kathryn are excited to re-team, and we will move forward with A Bad Moms Christmas on a similar time table and in much the same way in which we produced the original.”
2016’s Bad Moms was released in theaters on July 29th and made $180 million worldwide before exiting theaters. The film had a budget of $20 million and was produced by Suzanne Todd and Bill Block.
The Original Plot: In this comedy from the writers of The Hangover, Amy has a seemingly perfect life – a great marriage, over-achieving kids, beautiful home and a career. However she’s over-worked, over-committed and exhausted to the point that she’s about to snap. Fed up, she joins forces with two other over-stressed moms on a quest to liberate themselves from conventional responsibilities – going on a wild, un-mom-like binge of long overdue freedom, fun and self-indulgence – putting them on a collision course with PTA Queen Bee Gwendolyn and her clique of devoted perfect moms.
It’s possible that by the time we officially say goodbye to 2016, the box office will have passed 2015’s record-setting North American $11.14 billion. One of the 2016 end-of-the-year releases that’s helping to push the box office into record breaking territory is Disney and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars prequel/sequel, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Currently sitting at 85% fresh on RottenTomatoes, Rogue One retained its hold on the top spot at the box office over the four-day Christmas holiday weekend, pulling in $96 million and easily holding off newcomers Sing, Passengers, Why Him?, and Assassin’s Creed.
The animated singing animals comedy Sing came in second and earned an A from moviegoers, according to CinemaScore. The film marks the second hit of 2016 for Illumination Entertainment following the studio’s success with The Secret Life of Pets. Earning third place over its first weekend in release, Sony’s Passengers had to overcome negative reviews to finish up the extended holiday weekend on the low end of pre-release expectations.
