The women reuniting to help support one another navigate careers, parenting and relationships with the kind of love and humor you can only get from the people you grew up with.

Charlie Hunnam stars in ‘The Lost City of Z’ (Photo by Aidan Monaghan)
Amazon Studios and Bleecker Street just released The Lost City of Z teaser trailer along with two new photos of Charlie Hunnam. The dramatic film is based on true events and was directed by James Gray (Two Lovers, We Own the Night). Gray also adapted David Grann’s nonfiction book, The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon, for the screen.
In addition to Sons of Anarchy‘s Charlie Hunnam, the cast includes Robert Pattinson (the Twilight films), Sienna Miller (American Sniper), Tom Holland (the new Spider-Man), and Angus Macfadyen (TURN: Washington’s Spies). The Lost City of Z will open in Los Angeles and New York on April 14, 2017. A wide release is planned for April 21st.
The Plot:The Lost City of Z tells the incredible true story of British explorer Percy Fawcett (Hunnam), who journeys into the Amazon at the dawn of the 20th century and discovers evidence of a previously unknown, advanced civilization that may have once inhabited the region. Despite being ridiculed by the scientific establishment who regard indigenous populations as “savages,” the determined Fawcett – supported by his devoted wife (Miller), son (Holland) and aide-de-camp (Pattinson) – returns time and again to his beloved jungle in an attempt to prove his case, culminating in his mysterious disappearance in 1925.
An epically scaled tale of courage and obsession, told in James Gray’s classic filmmaking style, the film is a stirring tribute to the exploratory spirit and those individuals driven to achieve greatness at any cost.
If it weren’t for comic book-inspired films, 2016’s batch of theatrically released action movies would have been one of the worst in years. The genre wasn’t well represented in 2016, although action films fared better overall than comedies. Our annual list of the best action movies includes the latest Star Wars film and one of Ben Affleck’s 2016 films, The Accountant. Affleck’s other major release, Live By Night, shouldn’t be mentioned on any awards list.
Disney’s The Jungle Book is on the top 10 for impressively blending CGI and live action into some intense action sequences. Also making the cut was the remake of a classic Western, a thriller about the Boston Marathon bombing, and the little-known true story of a WWII hero.
The following list of the Top 10 Action Movies of 2016 is in alphabetical order, however my favorites in order for the top three spots would be Deadpool, Captain America: Civil War, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
The Accountant (October 2016) starring Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Jon Bernthal, John Lithgow, and J.K. Simmons
The Plot:Christian Wolff (Affleck) is a math savant with more affinity for numbers than people. Behind the cover of a small-town CPA office, he works as a freelance accountant for some of the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations. With the Treasury Department’s Crime Enforcement Division, run by Ray King (Simmons), starting to close in, Christian takes on a legitimate client: a state-of-the-art robotics company where an accounting clerk (Kendrick) has discovered a discrepancy involving millions of dollars. But as Christian uncooks the books and gets closer to the truth, it is the body count that starts to rise.
Captain America: Civil War (May 2016) starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Elizabeth Olsen, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Paul Bettany, Chadwick Boseman, and Tom Holland
The Plot: Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.

Prospects for filling out a Top 10 Best Movies of 2016 list looked dim even as recently as October, however, the year-end releases did ultimately live up to their hype (for the most part). There were disappointments among the December releases, including Martin Scorsese’s much-anticipated passion project, Silence, which failed to make many awards lists. Fortunately, there were also quite a few gems that exceeded expectations hitting theaters in the final months of 2016.
This Top 20 list includes one timely animated offering, one of the best comic book-inspired films in recent history, and two must-see documentaries. Also making the cut this year were films that are obvious Oscar contenders (La La Land, Manchester by the Sea, Loving, and Moonlight) mixed in with some that have, for some reason or another, failed to generate the attention they deserve (Sing Street, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and Paterson).
2015’s Best Movies list was expanded from the standard 10 to 15, and 2016 upped the stand-outs to 20. Yet even with an expanded number of films making the cut, there were a few that fell just short of being included in this “Best of” list. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story deserves honorable mention for pulling off being a stand-alone Star Wars movie, a prequel, and a sequel all at the same time. Other movies that nearly made the list include Miss Sloane, Weiner, Certain Women, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Green Room, and Hacksaw Ridge.
The following list is made up of my personal picks of the best movies of the year. The list isn’t based on genre, box office gross, or whether a film is a major studio release or an independent production. These are simply the movies that stuck with me long after the credits rolled, listed in alphabetical order rather than ranked from one to 20.

The Plot: Paterson (Driver) is a bus driver in the city of Paterson, New Jersey – they share the name. Every day, Paterson adheres to a simple routine: he drives his daily route, observing the city as it drifts across his windshield and overhearing fragments of conversation swirling around him; he writes poetry into a notebook; he walks his dog; he stops in a bar and drinks exactly one beer. He goes home to his wife, Laura (Farahani). By contrast, Laura’s world is ever changing. New dreams come to her almost daily, each a different and inspired project. Paterson loves Laura and she loves him. He supports her newfound ambitions; she champions his secret gift for poetry. The history and energy of the City of Paterson is a felt presence in the film and its simple structure unfolds over the course of a single week. The quiet triumphs and defeats of daily life are observed, along with the poetry evident in its smallest details.
