Roma earned top honors from the Alliance of Women Film Journalists* (AWFJ), collecting five wins including Best Film. The compelling drama also won in the Best Director (Alfonso Cuaron), Best Non-English Language Film, Best Editing, and Best Cinematography categories.

The period comedy The Favourite also proved to be popular with AWFJ members. Olivia Colman’s performance earned her the group’s Best Actress award and the film picked up Bravest Performance, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Woman Screenwriter wins.

Black Panther and Can You Ever Forgive Me? won multiple awards, and the AWFJ recognized Won’t You Be My Neighbor? directed by Morgan Neville as 2018’s Best Documentary.

“Representing women film critics’ perspectives on the world’s constantly evolving cinema scene, the Alliance of Women Film Journalists is proud that our 2018 EDA Awards nominees and winners genuinely reflect the movie industry’s advances in the cause of equality and diversity,” said Jennifer Merin, EDA AWARDS and AWJF founder and film critic. “Our EDA Awards always honor the year’s best regardless of gender, but we also recognize the need to have categories that focus specifically on women’s achievements in an industry that still has a long way to go to reach gender parity and equal opportunity for all.”

Merin added, “All in all, 2018 produced a bumper crop of female-directed and female-centered films. Too few of them reached the mainstream, but we hope that AWFJ and the EDA Awards can help to rush such films into the current.”

‘Velvet Buzzsaw’ Trailer: Jake Gyllenhaal Stars in a Freaky Thriller

Netflix’s official three minute trailer for Velvet Buzzsaw reveals a trippy thriller set in the art world, complete with paintings that come to life. The film reunites 2014’s Nightcrawler‘s writer/director Dan Gilroy with his real-life spouse Rene Russo and Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain).

Gilroy earned a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination for Nightcrawler which found Gyllenhaal playing a journalist. In Velvet Buzzsaw, Gyllenhaal plays an art critic who’s hard to impress until he’s shown paintings by a dead artist who incorporated real blood into his work.

In addition to Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo, the cast of Velvet Buzzsaw includes Toni Collette (Wanderlust, Please Stand By), Zawe Ashton (Nocturnal Animals, Not Safe for Work), Tom Sturridge (Far from the Madding Crowd, The Hollow Crown), Natalia Dyer (Stranger Things, After Darkness), Daveed Diggs (black-ish, The Get Down), Billy Magnussen (Tell Me a Story, The Oath), and John Malkovich (The New Pope, Bird Box).

Writer/director Gilroy’s behind the scenes team includes director of photography Robert Elswit, production designer James D. Bissell, editor John Gilroy (Dan’s twin brother), and costume designers Isis Mussenden and Trish Summerville. Two-time Oscar nominee Marco Beltrami (The Hurt Locker, 3:10 to Yuma) provided the film’s score.

Netflix will release the drama in select theaters and on the streaming service on February 1, 2019.

The Plot:

All art is dangerous.

Velvet Buzzsaw is a satirical thriller set in the contemporary art world scene of Los Angeles where big money artists and mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce.”

‘The Punisher’ Season 2 Unveils New Trailer, Posters and Photos

We’re just one week away from Marvel’s The Punisher season two and Netflix is teasing the upcoming release with an official trailer, three new character posters, and a handful of photos. The two and a half minute trailer shows off new clips from the second season and features the introduction of Billy Russo’s army which, of course, The Punisher assures us he’s going to take out.

Season two of the action drama stars Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/The Punisher and Ben Barnes as Billy Russo. Amber Rose Revah is Dinah Madani, Jason R. Moore is Curtis Hoyle, Josh Stewart is John Pilgrim, and Floriana Lima is Dr. Krista Dumont. Hannibal‘s Steve Lightfoot guides season two as showrunner, writer, and executive producer.

Netflix will release the full second season of Marvel’s The Punisher on January 18, 2019.

Marvel’s The Punisher Season 2 Synopsis:

Frank Castle (Bernthal) can run but he can’t hide from who he’s meant to be. Season two finds Frank in all too familiar territory. With Castle’s former brother-in-arms Billy Russo (Barnes) slowly beginning to heal from the traumatic brain injury Frank inflicted on him, it’s only a matter of time before Billy starts to put the pieces of the puzzle back together.

In season two, former marine-turned-vigilante Frank Castle has been living a quiet life on the road until he suddenly becomes embroiled in the attempted murder of a young girl (Giorgia Whigham). As he is drawn into the mystery surrounding her and those in pursuit of the information she holds, Castle attracts a new target on his back as new and old enemies force him to confront whether he should accept his destiny and embrace a life as The Punisher.

‘Project Blue Book’ with Aidan Gillen and Michael Malarkey is a Ratings Winner

Project Blue Book Cast
The cast of History’s new dramatic series, ‘Project Blue Book’ (Photo by Matthias Clamer / HISTORY)

History’s new sci-fi drama Project Blue Book scored big ratings right out of the gate. The series’ first episode aired on January 8, 2019 and drew in 3.1 million viewers. That number’s high enough to earn Project Blue Book the top spot among scripted cable shows debuting during the 2018/2019 primetime season. It’s also the network’s biggest scripted series premiere since Vikings bowed in 2013.

The critically acclaimed series hails from executive producer Robert Zemeckis. Based on true events, Project Blue Book‘s cast is led by Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) and Michael Malarkey (The Vampire Diaries). Neal McDonough (Legends of Tomorrow), Michael Harney (Orange is the New Black), Laura Mennell (The Man in the High Castle), and Ksenia Solo (Lost Girl) also star in the first season.

In addition to Robert Zemeckis, the first season’s executive produced by Jack Rapke, Jackie Levine, Barry Jossen, and Arturo Interian. David O’Leary created the series and is a writer and co-executive producer. Sean Jablonski (Suits, Nip/Tuck) is the showrunner and also writes and executive produces.

Season one consists of 10 one-hour episodes. New episodes air on Thursdays at 10pm ET/PT.

The Plot:

Project Blue Book is inspired by the personal experiences of Dr. J. Allen Hynek (Gillen), a brilliant college professor recruited by the U.S. Air Force to spearhead this clandestine operation (Project Blue Book) that researched thousands of cases, over 700 of which remain unsolved to this day. Each episode will draw from the actual case files blending UFO theories with authentic historical events from one of the most mysterious eras in United States history. Throughout the season, true to life, documented occurrences will be explored such as the Flatwoods Monster incident that took place in West Virginia, the Gorman Dogfight of Fargo, North Dakota, the Lubbock Lights of Lubbock, Texas and the Chiles-Whitted UFO Incident of Montgomery, Alabama among many others. Delving into themes such as trust, instinct, real news vs. fake news and government cover-up, “Project Blue Book” straddles the world of science and the exploration of the unknown.

McDonough plays General James Harding, a confident and perceptive general responsible for heading the Air Force’s new division – Project Blue Book. Harney is General Hugh Valentine, a sometimes cryptic yet powerful USAF General both overseeing and keeping a close eye on General Harding’s new division. Mennell stars as Mimi Hynek, Dr. J. Allen Hynek’s wife and loyal partner in life. Solo plays Susie Miller, a stylish, eye-catching woman with a confidence to be envious of and whose stealthy charm goes deeper than what meets the eye.

‘Future Man’ – Derek Wilson Interview on Season 2 and What’s Up with Wolf

When Hulu’s Future Man season two begins, Tiger (Eliza Coupe), Wolf (Derek Wilson), and Josh (Josh Hutcherson) are stuck in a drastically altered 2162. Tiger’s dealing with the discovery she’s a Biotic, Josh can’t stay out of trouble, and Wolf is once again forced to adapt to new bizarre surroundings.

Derek Wilson joined his Future Man co-stars at the New York Comic Con in support of the show’s second season. During our roundtable interview, Wilson discussed Wolf’s adaptability and what he’d like to see happen if the series earns a third season.

Future Man season two premieres on January 11, 2019.

Of the main characters, Wolf had the biggest transitions over the course of season one. How does he evolve in season two?

Derek Wilson: “Well, we start from where we left off in season one, obviously, which is he’s not the hardened warrior that he was. And we’re dealing with a future that is completely different from the one that Tiger and Wolf left. So, it’s a new fish out of water story in a future that we thought we knew but is completely different. It’s a matter of seeing what’s different when it’s completely different from what we left.

As opposed to living in the sewers, now everyone’s above ground. It’s this great thing that they live above ground and it’s really not a pleasant place that they live. So, there’s a lot of adaptation. There’s only two real food ingredients, so for Wolf that’s a challenge. But he adapts, as he always does.”

Wolf is so resilient and he really embraces new things. What aspect of Wolf and his obsessions is the most fun for you to play?

Derek Wilson: “I love it when he finds something that is surprising to him and affects him in a way that’s surprising. In this season he finds love in various forms and that was really fun to play because it’s a surprising thing. The thing is, he never goes halfway. He goes all the way, everything else be damned. Like, ‘This is what I’m doing.’ So, yeah, I think it was finding love that was a fun thing to play with this season.”

How is the relationship between Wolf and Tiger in season two?

Derek Wilson: “It’s challenged. We start to find out at the end of season one – we, the audience – that Tiger is Biotic. And, so we start dealing with that in season two. That’s a big challenge and it puts a pretty big strain on the relationship because honor and trust are a huge thing to Wolf – two huge things to Wolf. And, you know, he really values honor and truth. If you go against that…

It’s hard to talk about this too because the thing is, we get so close in the show that there are a few scenes where I had to get pretty nasty with Tiger because of this and it’s really emotional. It’s hard to do. I mean it’s not hard to do but it’s hard to do that to Eliza and to Tiger. But it’s, hopefully, fun to watch.”

Is it hard for you to do the Wolf voice? Does it hurt?

Derek Wilson: “It doesn’t hurt me. It’s hard to do in a setting like this but as soon as we’re in a scene, it’s just there. It only hurts if I have to project a lot, if it’s a big audience scene or something. I have to go back to my theatre training and try and get into that which is tough with the throatiness of it.

I hurt myself only once and that was in season one with the TruffleDome. It was a long day and a lot of yelling. It actually kind of works. Towards the end of the scene you can hear my voice going out and I’m just sort of over it and tired, and it worked.”

Did you take inspiration from any other characters in creating that voice?

Derek Wilson: “Oh yeah. When I showed up to do the pilot, I was brought on to do this like two days before we started shooting because I was shooting Preacher with Seth (Rogen) and Evan (Goldberg). So, I came in and had really very little idea what to do with this character which you can see if you watch the first pilot. It’s not fully formed yet. And Evan came up to me and said, ‘Just for now just try your best macho Batman voice.’ And so it hasn’t stayed there but it’s become Wolf’s voice. But that’s where it started.”

At the beginning of season two, Wolf, Tiger, and Josh are separated. How was that for you to play without your cohorts?

Derek Wilson: “I missed them a lot. We all missed each other. We texted a lot, just like, ‘What did you do today?’ I think it’s a nice thing to see us go on our own journeys and grapple with our own issues, but for us as actors we missed each other. I think if, hopefully, we do a season three, we’ll be together because we’ve done that grand experiment.”

Do you think there’s a future where both Wolf and Tiger are happy?

Derek Wilson: “Yeah. Sure. Maybe season seven. Yeah, why not? I think anything is possible. It’s a matter of lining the right ducks up in a row to make that future happen. As we see in season two, every little thing that we did in season one has affected this future.”

Do you have any suggestions for where you want to see the show go in a third season?

Derek Wilson: “I would like to go deeper into history. Where that is, I don’t know. It would be fun to go to the Old West. If we’re really following the Back to the Future thing, that would be a fun thing. Or prehistoric times, even. I want to go back further, out of the 20th century. I want to wear really fabulous costumes.”

Cinemax’s Strike Back returns for season six on January 25, 2019 at 10pm ET/PT with Warren Brown (Luther, The Dark Knight Rises), Daniel MacPherson (A Wrinkle in Time), and Alin Sumarwata (Neighbours, Burning Man) in starring roles. The returning cast members are joined by Strike Back season six new regulars Jamie Bamber (Battlestar Galactica, Monday Mornings) and Yasemin Allen (Water and Fire) for a 10 episode season shot entirely in Malaysia.

Andy Harries, Sharon Hughff, Jack Lothian, and Richard Burrell served as executive producers, with Nuala O’Leary producing.

The action drama is a Cinemax and Sky production, and this upcoming sixth season is actually the seventh season in the UK. Strike Back: Origins kicked off the series in the UK, however that season wasn’t aired on Cinemax until 2013.

The Season 6 Plot:

When a Russian bomber crashes in the South China Sea, the covert special-ops soldiers of Section 20 — Thomas “Mac” McAllister (Warren Brown), Samuel Wyatt (Daniel MacPherson), and Gracie Novin (Alin Sumarwata) — are sent to investigate. There, they cross paths with Katrina Zarkova (Yasemin Allen), a rogue Russian operative with questionable loyalties.

Under orders of the new commanding officer, Col. Alexander Coltrane (Jamie Bamber), Section 20 pursues stolen contents of the Russian jet across Southeast Asia. They will work alongside the Malaysian police to shut down a Triad gang in Kuala Lumpur, uncover a corrupt plot by a wealthy Indian businesswoman running for Parliament and plunge into the jungles of the Golden Triangle in Myanmar, facing off against mercenary drug agents and terrifying warlords as they uncover a conspiracy that threatens to push the world to the brink of global conflict.

Strike Back Episode Guide:

  • Season 6, episode 1
    Debut date: FRIDAY, JAN. 25 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT)
Six months after their last mission, three members of the British special-ops team Section 20 – Gracie Novin (Alin Sumarwata), Samuel Wyatt (Daniel MacPherson) and Thomas “Mac” McAllister (Warren Brown) – reunite for what they think is a routine “cleanup” exercise in Malaysia. Things get complicated when their new commanding officer, borderline burn-out Alexander Coltrane (Jamie Bamber), learns that a British operative, in possession of intel about a downed Russian plane, has been killed in Kuala Lumpur after meeting with Katrina Zarkova (Yasemin Allen), a covert Russian operative.
The trail leads Wyatt, Mac and Novin to a Russian safehouse, where Katrina and her team of Russian soldiers are attempting to track a mysterious “package” stolen from the plane, which crashed into the ocean under suspicious circumstances. The confrontation turns bloody when members of a brutal Malaysian triad arrive, setting off a chain of dangerous encounters in the skies and skyscrapers of Kuala Lumpur.

  • Season 6, episode 2
    Debut date: FRIDAY, FEB. 1 (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
Section 20 forges an uneasy alliance with Zarkova (Yasemin Allen) in hopes of tracking down a stolen nuclear warhead in Kuala Lumpur. The group is frustrated when Police Inspector Amy Leong (Ann Truong), who has connections to triad leader Godfather Kim (Lim Teik Leong) and his henchman Laoshu (Tom Wu), pulls them off the job after a false alarm. High Commander McKitterick (Adrian Edmondson) finds himself in an untenable dilemma, while Novin (Alin Sumarwata) defies Coltrane’s (Jamie Bamber) orders to settle a score.

  • Season 6, episode 3
    Debut date: FRIDAY, FEB. 8 (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
Section 20’s search for the missing nuclear warhead leads them to Goa, India, where three scientists have been kidnapped by Gopan (Rudi Dharmalingam), a militant under orders from a mysterious “kingfisher.” When one of the scientists escapes, the team catches up to him and his daughter (Pallavi Sharda), gaining valuable intel on Anjali Vartak (Shivani Ghai), a rich Hindu with a personal vendetta against Muslims. S20 infiltrates a suspicious fundraiser as Coltrane (Jamie Bamber) and new S20 computer whiz Olivia Chetri (Varada Sethu) deal with a breach in security.

  • Season 6, episode 4
    Debut date: FRIDAY, FEB. 15 (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
As Wyatt (Daniel MacPherson) is tortured by Vartak’s (Shivani Ghai) henchmen, Mac (Warren Brown) presses her corrupt lawyer to hand over an encrypted hard drive that might hold clues to the whereabouts of a pair of “nuclear suitcases.” After being sorely tested in a deadly hostage standoff at an office building, the team is forced to lean on Zarkova (Yasemin Allen) to commandeer high-end Russian technology, crack the encryption code and make a final foray to a secret hideout, where Vartak, Gopan (Rudi Dharmalingam) and the nuclear packages await.

  • Season 6, episode 5
    Debut date: FRIDAY, FEB. 22 (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
Following a high-speed jungle ambush in Myanmar, the suitcase nukes end up in the hands of Jean-Baptiste Zaza (Chris Obi), a brutal Rwandan drug lord with a jealous streak. Even as they continue to suspect Zarkova’s motives, Section 20 journeys to the Punchan Province and connects with Lauren Gillespie (Victoria Smurfit), a DEA agent with inside intel on Zaza and Dagon (Fish Chaar), his second in command. With the suitcase on the verge of being sold to a jihadist, Coltrane (Jamie Bamber) tasks Novin (Alin Sumarwata) with impersonating the buyer in order to ascertain the WMD’s location. Meanwhile, Colonel Beshnov (Marek Vasut), the Russian Alpha Group leader, surprises Pavel (Alec Newman) with a revelation about Zarkova (Yasemin Allen).

  • Season 6, episode 6
    Debut date: FRIDAY, MARCH 1 (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
After ditching the seaplane they hijacked, Novin (Alin Sumarwata) and Zarkova (Yasemin Allen) find themselves at the mercy of corrupt police, while Mac (Warren Brown) and Wyatt (Daniel MacPherson) take temporary refuge in a local village. Coltrane (Jamie Bamber) finally learns the location of the suitcase nukes, but the revelation comes at a high price. Finally, Section 20 tracks down Zaza (Chris Obi) and the nukes – as well as an unexpected interloper – in a remote compound, and all hell breaks loose. Expecting the worst, Wyatt makes a call back home, while Pavel (Alec Newman) forces Zarkova to come to terms with what happened to Alpha Group.
