Grammy Award winner Justin Bieber released his highly anticipated sixth studio album today titled Justice. The album includes the chart-topping global smashes “Holy” feat. Chance The Rapper, “Lonely” feat. Benny Blanco, “Anyone,” and “Hold On,” which combined have garnered over two billion streams worldwide, dominating radio airplay to the tune of over 215 million in US audiences alone.

Along the way, Justin has appeared as a musical guest twice on Saturday Night Live, performed on the American Music Awards, and E! People’s Choice Awards.

In the spirit of the theme of Justice, Bieber has teamed up with Propeller – the digital platform that works at the crossroads of culture and social good – to raise awareness and generate support for organizations that are doing the important work embodying what justice and healing look like in action.

The nonprofits benefiting from the campaign include Alexandria House, Anti-Recidivism Coalition, Baby2Baby, The Compton Pledge, Equal Justice Initiative, Lift Communities, Poor People’s Campaign, Self Help Graphics & Art, The King Center, and This Is About Humanity.

Review: ‘The Courier’ Starring Benedict Cumberbatch

The Courier

The CIA, KGB, MI6, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and a salesman take on key roles in the dramatic film The Courier, based on true events. The film begins in 1960 in London and focuses on British businessman Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch), a hard-drinking, people-pleasing family man who’s looking to broaden his business out of the country. Wynne meets with a friend, Dickie Franks (Angus Wright), and his American associate, Emily Donovan (Rachel Brosnahan), for lunch and is surprised when he discovers that Franks is really with MI6 and Donovan is with the CIA.

The surprises don’t stop there. It turns out Franks and Donovan want to recruit Wynne to work for them to make contact with a Soviet Officer and WWII hero, Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze), who fears Nikita Khrushchev and is looking to prevent a nuclear war with the United States. “I’m just a salesman,” declares Wynne. “Exactly. You’re a civilian so the KGB won’t be watching,” replies Donovan.

Reluctant but fully aware of the political tensions between Russia and the United States, Wynne finally agrees to travel to the Soviet Union and make contact with Penkovsky.

By claiming he’s interested in opening doors to the Soviet Union to the top manufacturers in the West, Wynne’s able to speak with Penkovsky in a public meeting. Later, they eat lunch and feign talking business. That night after attending the opera, Wynne is walking back to his hotel when he’s informed by Penkovsky that he needs to assume everyone he meets is a KGB agent and to never bring up anything secret or covert; he should always let Penkovsky bring it up first.

Nonchalantly, the Soviet officer hands Wynne something. Upon his return to London, Wynne turns the item over to Donovan and Franks. It confirms Penkovsky wants to betray his country and slip secret government documents to MI6 and the CIA to try to prevent nuclear war. His only demand is that Wynne stays on board as the courier.

Based on a true story, The Courier is a stylish, smart, and suspenseful Cold War spy thriller that tells an incredible and important part of world history and is highlighted by a magnificent performance by Benedict Cumberbatch. The Courier‘s an intelligent and well-crafted film that brings back the days when the Cold War was at its most intense and the U.S. and Russia were on the brink of nuclear war.

Cumberbatch delivers one of his best performances as Wynne, a hard-working businessman who loves his family and only wants to provide for them when he ends up being recruited to be not just a courier but a spy. Cumberbatch shows how Wynne is truly a fish out of water in the espionage world but quickly becomes one of the best spies in history. He captures Wynne’s belief in what he’s doing for his country and the world while keeping him very much human, subtly displaying his real fear of getting caught and being executed.

Merab Ninidze is perfect in his performance as Oleg Penkovsky, a high-ranking Soviet officer who fears his country’s ruler – Khrushchev – will lead his country to nuclear war and is desperate to do whatever he can to avoid it. Ninidze and Cumberbatch have wonderful chemistry as two men who start out as covert partners and quickly become close friends who trust each other with their lives.

The production design and look of the film are first-rate, capturing and bringing the early 1960s back to life on the screen while realistically portraying the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. The costumes, automobiles, planes, and buildings all look extremely authentic.

With an excellent performance by Cumberbatch, a fascinating true story, and top-notch sets, The Courier is a highly effective and engaging spy thriller.

The concert was originally due to be screened in cinemas worldwide, however because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the premiere went digital. nugs.net will be the streaming video platform to host the global premiere online in HD and 4K video with enhanced Dolby Atmos sound. Ticket holders can tune in to the live premiere on April 24, 2021 at 3pm ET or purchase the concert via video on demand for up to five days. Mick Fleetwood released a statement acknowledging Peter Green’s passing just five months after the concert. “Peter Green taught me two unassailable lessons when it came to music: less is more and don’t worry about being clever. He played from his heart, which is why so many people, musicians, and appreciators alike, gathered in London to pay tribute to him, all of us together bearing witness to the magic of Peter’s music. He revealed himself in his art, which sometimes happens at great cost, as it was with Peter. He showed so much of himself that he had to withdraw. And he did. May he rest easy. He was loved and he will be missed.”

The Weeknd to Re-Release ‘House of Balloons’ Mixtape

The Weeknd House of Balloons

The Weeknd is set to re-release his debut mixtape, House of Balloons, in its original form on all digital service providers in celebration of its 10th anniversary on March 21, 2021.

Additionally, The Weeknd will unveil an exclusive merchandise drop to celebrate the moment. Among the highlights will be a collaboration with Daniel Arsham on Arsham’s new interpretation of the iconic cover art and a 1,000 limited-edition vinyl. Fans can visit shop.theweeknd.com to purchase House of Balloons vinyl beginning March 21st at 3pm ET.

Long before he was the star of a Super Bowl halftime show, nominated for an Academy Award, and collected Grammy Award wins, The Weeknd unveiled his groundbreaking debut mixtape, House of Balloons. A decade later to the date, it will be made available on all streaming platforms for the first time in its original incarnation, including original samples. This will mark the first time House of Balloons has appeared on DSPs in its purest form.

In Daniel Arsham’s own words: “The summer of 2011 will always be marked by House of Balloons. Like a time travel device, the album transports me back to that specific moment in time every time I listen. It is a great privilege to work with The Weeknd and the XO Team to reimagine the iconic album art of House of Balloons as an eroded sculpture for the ten-year anniversary. Alongside the transparent vinyl and eroded album artwork – we also worked on a collection of merchandise including a Varsity Jacket, blending my own aesthetic with that of The Weeknd’s.”

The interior of the varsity jacket will feature a custom camouflage pattern, mixing The Weeknd’s silhouette with Arsham Studio colorways inspired by and reminiscent of The Weeknd’s outfit at his first live show in 2011 at Toronto’s Mod Club.

Capping off 2011, House of Balloons graced over a dozen year-end lists. Complex christened it the “best album of 2011,” while it landed in the Top 10 of annual roundups by Stereogum at number 5, and Pitchfork at number 10. It closed out the year as Metacritic’s “third-best reviewed project of the year.”

House of Balloons Original Track List:

1. High for This
2. What You Need
3. House of Balloons/ Glass Table Girls
4. The Morning
5. Wicked Games
6. The Party & The After Party
7. Coming Down
8. Loft Music
9. The Knowing
10. Twenty Eight

The news about the re-release of The Weeknd’s mixtape comes weeks after the artist was shockingly snubbed by the Grammys despite having the number one selling digital song, “Blinding Lights,” which also currently holds the record for most weeks spent in the top five and top 10 of Billboard Hot 100. The Weeknd recently released a statement, “I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys.”

Brittany Murphy Docuseries Set at HBO Max

Brittany Murphy
Brittany Murphy at the Hollywood premiere of ‘Happy Feet’

Brittany Murphy’s life and career will be explored in HBO Max’s just-ordered two-part documentary series. The untitled Brittany Murphy docuseries is the first collaboration between Blumhouse Television and HBO Max.

“Our Brittany Murphy documentary cuts through the tabloid noise with an elevated, nuanced depiction of a sensational story. Crafting a grounded account of Brittany Murphy’s life struggles and sudden passing comes with great responsibility and we’ve partnered with a masterful creative team to produce a thoughtful examination of a tragedy that has long been cause for speculation,” said Jennifer O’Connell, executive vice president, Non-Fiction and Live-Action Family Programming, HBO Max.

The Blumhouse Television and Pyramid Productions docuseries will be directed by Emmy nominee Cynthia Hill (Private Violence). Jason Blum, Chris McCumber, Jeremy Gold, Mary Lisio for Blumhouse, and James Buddy Day are executive producing.

“Brittany Murphy was a rising star whose filmography includes movies that defined a generation. We thought her story warrants a deeper exploration, and examination into the environment that allowed her to become a victim of success,” stated Mary Lisio, executive vice president, Alternative and Non-Scripted Programming, Blumhouse Television. “We’re thrilled to be partnering with HBO Max, and to collaborate with a director like Cynthia Hill who takes a nuanced approach to complex stories about women and contemporary issues.”

Brittany Murphy burst onto the scene with her breakout role in 1995’s Clueless. Murphy’s film roles include Don’t Say a Word, Drop Dead Gorgeous, 8 Mile, and Sin City. Her death at the age of 32 was ruled accidental, with the primary cause listed as pneumonia.

“I agreed to do this film because I think it’s a shame that Brittany’s promising life and career has been eclipsed by the circumstances of her death,” stated director Cynthia Hill. “I think it’s important to celebrate Brittany’s talent as we struggle to explain the tragic circumstances of her and Simon’s deaths.”

HBO Max released the following description of the two-part docuseries:

“The documentary presents an in-depth, intimate character portrait exploring the life and career and mysterious circumstances surrounding the tragic death of 90’s actress and rising star, Brittany Murphy. The series will go beyond the conspiracy theories and headlines, featuring new interviews by those closest to Brittany and new archival footage.”
