‘Supernatural’ Season 15 Episode 14 Recap: “Last Holiday”

We’re back with The CW’s Supernatural after so very long. And you know what? The show proves once again why it can do everything. After ending the previous episode hinting that Jack’s grief at causing Mary’s death will usher in a heavy-handed follow-up, season 15 episode 14 – “Last Holiday” – turned out to be an episode that brought in heartwarming moments aplenty.

We start off with Jack (Alexander Calvert) still moping about Mary’s death now that he has his soul back, while Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) deal with the Men of Letters HQ’s weird technical issues. Dean – who’s strangely hopped up in this episode as if the show got a sixteenth season – simply presses the reset button in the console room. For once, this doesn’t bring in anything bad for the Winchesters. Quite the contrary, as an elderly woman named Mrs. Butters (Meagen Fay) shows up. She claims to be a wood nymph who had been trained by the Men of Letters – the guys Abaddon had killed in the past – as the HQ’s caretaker.

As it turns out, Mrs. Butters had kept herself on standby back in 1958 in hopes the Men of Letters would return and release her, so she’s pretty much stuck in 2020 now. Sam’s initial skepticism in keeping Mrs. Butters around is waved off by Dean, who loves the idea of a motherly figure taking care of them (projecting much, Dean?). She does prove herself to be handy, activating the true potential of the HQ, meaning Sam and Dean can now track monsters from the console room and easily ambush them. This basically gives them easy hunts they can finish like nothing now.

For the first time ever, Supernatural opts for a montage that skips forward in the timeline – by a lot, I might add. We get to see many holidays and events celebrated, ranging from Halloween to birthdays. The fact that we see Sam’s birthday being celebrated in May confirms that Mrs. Butters has been in the boys’ life for almost a year by this point. And I just love it because it means our heroes got to have a family life where they actually enjoyed themselves. Sam, Jack, and Dean were happy and had a “mom” taking care of them. My issue with Mary had always been her lack of motherly affection, so watching Mrs. Butters in this role felt somewhat cathartic to me. If only Castiel were there to complete this group…

Anyway, fast forward to present-day and Sam’s leaving for a date with Eileen (yes, they’re doing normal stuff like date nights too now). Everything’s perfect, but it wouldn’t be Supernatural if things didn’t go south, would it?

Jack finds a tape from the ‘50s where Mrs. Butters was shown being trained in brutally killing people by the Men of Letters. Before he can tell Dean about it, Mrs. Butters ambushes him. She’d been handing him smoothies all these months and it turns out these were designed to drain his powers.

Mrs. Butters was basically brainwashed by the Men of Letters to see evil in black and white. So, Jack being Lucifer’s son and all, she’s made up her mind that he needs to be killed. Dean’s disappointed, in particular, because this means all those tasty meals are over. Mrs. Butters overpowers him too when she realizes he’s not going to kill Jack.

While locked up, Dean admits to Jack that he’s still angry to some degree about Mary’s death (seriously, aren’t we done with this whole Dean angry stuff already?) but assures Jack he won’t let “Evil Mary Poppins” hurt him.

Sam’s the next one to be caught once he returns from his date. Being the more compassionate one, he argues with Mrs. Butters that Jack isn’t bad and that he cares about him. Mrs. Butters reluctantly starts torturing her “favorite” Winchester (sorry, Dean) before she’s interrupted by Jack and Dean, who fumbled their way to freedom earlier.

Eventually, the guys are able to convince her that Jack really isn’t evil. Mrs. Butters has to concede that Jack might not be like she thought, although she decides to return to the woods to find peace from her brainwashing. Dean, realizing just how important and valuable their great times were, makes a (horrible) birthday cake for Jack, so there’s hope he won’t go back to being sour with him.

Overall, this episode reminded me how much I’ll be missing Supernatural because it delivered so many heartwarming moments. With just six episodes left, I doubt we’ll be getting such a fun story again and I sure will appreciate this one.

‘American Gods’ Season 3 Teaser Trailer: Welcome to Lakeside

Shadow Moon makes it to Lakeside in season three of Starz’ American Gods which is expected to arrive in early 2021. During the show’s New York Comic Con panel, Ricky Whittle explained Shadow will spend a good deal of time in the upcoming season with characters he didn’t really have the opportunity to interact with in seasons one and two. And novelist/executive producer teased this third season tells a fabulous, Twin Peak-ish story.

Whittle and Gaiman were joined on the American Gods panel by Emily Browning (‘Laura Moon’), Yetide Badaki (‘Bilquis’), Bruce Langley (‘Tech Boy’), Omid Abtahi (‘Salim’) and Ashley Reyes (‘Cordelia’). In addition to discussing what’s in store, the panel (embedded below) hosted the premiere of the season three teaser trailer.

The cast of season three also includes Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday, Crispin Glover as Mr. World, Demore Barnes as Mr. Ibis, Devery Jacobs as Sam Black Crow, Blythe Danner as Demeter, Marilyn Manson as Johan Wengren, and Julia Sweeney as Hinzelmann. Iwan Rheon plays Liam Doyle, Danny Trejo is Mr. World, Peter Stormare is Czernobog, Denis O’Hare plays Tyr, Lela Loren is Marguerite, Dominique Jackson is Ms. World, Wale is Chango, Herizen Guardiola plays Oshun, and Eric Johnson is Chad Mulligan.

The Fremantle production is executive produced by Gaiman, Charles H. Eglee, Anne Kenney, Damian Kindler, David Paul Francis, Mark Tinker, Ian McShane, Craig Cegielski, and Stefanie Berk. Eglee also serves as the season three showrunner.

The Plot, Courtesy of Starz:

American Gods is the epic story of an inevitable war building between the Old Gods of mythology and our New Gods of technology. Whittle stars as ex-con Shadow Moon, a man pulled into the service of the mysterious Mr. Wednesday, played by Ian McShane — only to discover that not only is his charismatic but un-trustable boss actually the Norse All-Father god Odin, he’s also…Shadow’s father.

In Season 3, Shadow angrily pushes this apparent destiny away and settles in the idyllic snowy town of Lakeside, Wisconsin — to make his own path, guided by the gods of his black ancestors, the Orishas. But he’ll soon discover that this town’s still waters run deep, and dark, and bloody, and that you don’t get to simply reject being a god. The only choice — and a choice you have to make — is what kind of god you’re going to be.

‘The Watch’ Series Debuts a Teaser Trailer and Announces New Cast Members

The action in BBC America’s new series The Watch takes place somewhere in a distant secondhand set of dimensions where dragons and other mythical creatures are real. The series’ teaser trailer made its debut during The Watch‘s New York Comic Con panel (embedded below) which featured cast members, lead writer/executive producer Simon Allen, and executive producer Richard Stokes.

In addition to dropping the teaser trailer, the NYCC panel included the announcement Wendell Pierce (The Wire) and Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows) have joined the series. Pierce will be voicing “DEATH,” a dry, sardonic Grim Reaper. Berry will voice “Wayne,” a magical speaking sword.

Season one features Richard Dormer as Sam Vimes, Lara Rossi as Lady Sybil Ramkin, Adam Hugill as Carrot, Jo Eaton-Kent as Cheery, and Marama Corlett as Angua. Paul Kaye plays Inigo Skimmer, Ralph Ineson voices Sergeant Detritus, Sam Adewunmi is Carcer Dun, Anna Chancellor is Lord Vetinari, and James Fleet plays The Archchancellor.

Ingrid Oliver stars as Doctor Cruces, Ruth Madeley is Throat, Hakeem Kae-Kazim plays Captain John Keel, and Bianca Simone Mannie is Wonse.

Executive producers include Hilary Salmon, Ben Donald, Richard Stokes, Rob Wilkins, Simon Allen, and Craig Viveiros.

Episode one of The Watch will premiere on Sunday, January 3, 2021 at 8pm ET/PT.

The Plot, Courtesy of BBC America:

The Watch follows an unlikely group of misfits, The City Watch, who are forced to find the guts to save the world, surprising even themselves in the process. The comedic yet thrilling series pits trolls, werewolves, wizards, and other improbable heroes against an evil plot to resurrect a great dragon which would lead to the destruction of life as they know it.

From lead writer and executive producer Simon Allen, the modern and inclusive series is inspired by the characters created by Sir Terry Pratchett’s famous Discworld novels, including the captain of The City Watch Sam Vimes, the last scion of nobility Lady Sybil Ramkin, the naïve but heroic Carrot, the mysterious Angua, and the ingenious forensics expert Cheery together with The Watch’s own idiosyncratic depiction of Death.

‘Horizon Line’ Poster, Photo, and Hair-Raising First Trailer

STXfilms has unveiled the first trailer for the thriller Horizon Line. The studio’s also released a photo and poster for the high-flying drama directed by Mikael Marcimain (Liberty, Gentlemen & Gangsters) and set on a small plane in dire straits.

It was supposed to be a routine and casual 99-minute flight to their friend’s tropical island wedding. With nothing but miles of ocean and sky in every direction, and a terrifying storm that’s about to envelop them, Sara and Jackson have only one shot – and there’s no going back.
