‘Old’ Review: What a Drag It is Getting Old

Old Film Cast

Things have been looking up for two-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan who began his career with 1999’s The Sixth Sense and gave us decent scares with 2002’s Signs before his career careened off course with Lady in the Water, The Happening (wind as a villain is never a good choice), and After Earth. He got back on track with 2016’s Split and Apple TV+’s brilliant series, Servant, which he executive produces and directed episodes of. Unfortunately, Shyamalan’s mini-hot streak ends with the 2021 horror/thriller, Old.

Old’s loosely based on the graphic novel Sandcastle by French writer Pierre Oscar Lévy and artist Frederik Peeters. The action’s set in a tropical paradise complete with resort staff who immediately serve guests their favorite cocktails (based on a questionnaire completed before arrival) and supply a fully stocked candy station for the kiddies. The creep factor is instantly apparent; these resort employees are far too cheery and helpful.

The resort manager (Gustaf Hammarsten) selects a small group of guests to invite to a very private, secluded beach. First up is a family of four who desperately need a little R&R. Guy (Gael Garcia Bernal) and Prisca (Vicky Krieps) are obviously having major relationship issues and it’s hinted that Prisca is ill which is part of the reason they’re keeping their 11-year-old daughter, Maddox (Alexa Swinton), and six-year-old son, Trent (Nolan River), in the dark by pretending everything is hunky-dory.

Also invited are a racist douchebag doctor named Charles (Rufus Sewell), his trophy wife, Chrystal (Abbey Lee), their adorable six-year-old daughter, Kara (Kylie Begley), and Charles’ elderly mom, Agnes (Kathleen Chalfant). Jarin (Ken Leung) and Patricia (Nikki Amuka-Bird) join them and seem to be the only couple who enjoy being in each other’s presence.

A rapper with a bloody nose who goes by the ridiculous name Mid-Size Sedan (Aaron Pierre) and his dead girlfriend complete the carefully selected group who have the gorgeous beach all to themselves.

It doesn’t take long for the beachgoers to realize there’s something freaky going on. The dead woman on the beach isn’t nearly as worrisome to the group as Trent outgrowing his swim trunks for no logical reason. Soon it’s apparent Trent’s shorts aren’t the only thing growing as the kids mysteriously age up within hours of arriving on the beach. The youngsters become teenagers (played by Alex Wolff, Thomasin McKenzie, and Eliza Scanlen) while the adults begin showing the effects of age with new wrinkles and hearing loss. With no hope of escape from this twisted paradise, the strangers come to the realization their lives are slipping away as the minutes tick by.

Love the premise, hate the way it’s executed pretty much sums up my opinion of M. Night Shyamalan’s Old. It could have been a fascinating character study of how each member of this eclectic group faces the prospect of death – the keyword here being “could.” It’s not, because Shyamalan hasn’t offered us a single character to like or sympathize with. There’s no character development which makes it impossible to feel any empathy or become invested in their outcomes. When they die, we simply don’t care. Not only that, but we also root for quite a few of these insufferable characters to die horrific deaths because they deserve it. Or at least Shyamalan hasn’t given us any reason to believe otherwise.

In one of the film’s earlier scenes, Prisca warns her kids to stop rushing life and stop “wishing away the moment.” I’d loved to have seen a film that takes that line and runs with it. Instead, it’s just a throw-away piece of dialogue. Over the following hour and a half plus the characters never evolve past being two-dimensional, dispensable horror film caricatures. We’re provided no insight into how each of these strangers is dealing with their mortality. There’s simply nothing interesting going on.

There’s a classic M. Night Shyamalan twist at the end which is morally edgy enough to be interesting. However, after sitting through repetitive scenes with horrible dialogue spouted by disposable characters it’s difficult to justify sticking around for the twist.

DETAILS ON NEW AUGUST TITLES:

HBO’s three-part documentary, OBAMA: IN PURSUIT OF A MORE PERFECT UNION, debuting TUESDAY, AUGUST 3 (9:00-10:40 p.m. ET/PT), with additional parts airing Wednesday and Thursday at the same time, chronicles the personal and political journey of President Barack Obama, as the country grapples with its racial history. Weaving together conversations with colleagues, friends and critics, and interspersed with his own speeches and news interviews, the series begins with Obama’s childhood and takes us through his perspective as the son of a white mother from Kansas and an African father, his spiritual formation by a generation of Black leaders, and his hopes for a more inclusive America.

Through the story of one man irrevocably bound to the history of a country, OBAMA: IN PURSUIT OF A MORE PERFECT UNION reflects on the country’s past and present national identity.

BETRAYAL AT ATTICA – On September 13, 1971 the State of New York shot and killed 39 of its own citizens, injured hundreds more, and tortured the survivors. The plan to retake D Yard led to one of the bloodiest days in American history, and set the stage for the worst aspects of modern policing. Radical lawyer Elizabeth Fink tells the story of the Attica prison rebellion, and how she exposed the cover up that went on for decades.

From writer/director James Gunn comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ superhero action-adventure THE SUICIDE SQUAD, featuring a collection of the most degenerate delinquents in the DC lineup — including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn — who will do anything to get out of prison—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X on a do-or-die mission.

August also brings action thriller REMINISCENCE starring Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson and Thandiwe Newton. Nick Bannister (Jackman), a private investigator of the mind, navigates the darkly alluring world of the past by helping his clients access lost memories. Living on the fringes of the sunken Miami coast, his life is forever changed when he takes on a new client, Mae (Ferguson). A simple matter of lost and found becomes a dangerous obsession.

SWEET LIFE: LOS ANGELES, from Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Issa Rae, gives an honest and unique look into what it means to be young, Black, and in constant pursuit of one’s dreams in the heart of South Los Angeles. The series follows a group of ambitious childhood friends showcasing their relatable, authentic and sometimes stumbling mid-20s moments as they embrace the joy and struggles of adulthood, navigating love and family, and building their careers as tastemakers in the city where they grew up.

The new minute and a half trailer for Netflix’s The Chair finds 12 time Emmy Award nominee Sandra Oh wondering if the only reason she was chosen to be the first woman Chair of the English Department was so that a female would be holding the bomb when it explodes. The latest trailer is backed by The Linda Lindas’ “Oh!” and sets up life in the dysfunctional English department at Pembroke University.

The six-episode first season also features Jay Duplass, Nana Mensah, Ji Yong Lee, Holland Taylor, Bob Balaban, David Morse, and Everly Carginilla.

Actress Amanda Peet is the writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Sandra Oh, David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Bernie Caulfield, and Daniel Gray Longino also executive produce. Daniel Gray Longino directs and Annie Julia Wyman, Richard E. Robbins, Jennifer Kim, and Andrea Troyer join Peet as season one writers.

The Chair joins Netflix’s lineup on Friday, August 20, 2021.

The Chair follows Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim (Oh) as she navigates her new role as the Chair of the English department at prestigious Pembroke University. Ji-Yoon is faced with a unique set of challenges as the first woman to chair the department, and as one of the few staff members of color at the university. The older staff fear change, while new blood, like professor Yasmin McKay (Mensah), agitate for it. Ji-Yoon tries to juggle her new administrative responsibilities —clashing with close co-workers who were confidants before she became the boss— with motherhood to her young daughter Ju Ju (Carginilla) and caretaking for her father Habi (Lee).

Simultaneously she is struggling to discern if her platonic relationship with beloved English professor Bill Dobson (Duplass) is becoming something more and, if it even should. When Bill is captured on video making a controversial gesture the student body erupts into a call for accountability and Ji-Yoon’s ride gets even wilder as work, romance, drama, and comedy collide in this layered, multi-faceted tale also starring

Neil Gaiman’s ‘Anansi Boys’ Limited Series Ordered Up by Amazon

Anansi Boys

Amazon has greenlit a limited series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s bestselling novel Anansi Boys, with Gaiman on board to adapt, executive produce, and serve as a co-showrunner.

The international bestseller is a standalone project which originated during a conversation between Gaiman and Sir Lenny Henry. (Amazon’s official announcement makes a point of confirming the limited series has nothing to do with American Gods.) Henry is joining Gaiman as a writer along with Arvind Ethan David, Kara Smith, and Racheal Ofori. He’ll also executive produce the six-episode limited series with Douglas Mackinnon, Hanelle M. Culpepper, Endor Productions’ Hilary Bevan Jones, and Red Production Company’s Richard Fee. Mackinnon is Gaiman’s co-showrunner, and Culpepper, Jermain Julien, and Azhur Saleem are attached to direct.

Anansi Boys began around 1996, from a conversation I had with Lenny Henry about writing a story that was diverse and part of the culture that we both loved,” explained Gaiman. “I wrote a novel, an (I hope) joyous and funny book about a dead god and his two sons, about birds and ghosts and beasts and cops, based in Caribbean and African tales. It was my first number one NYT Bestseller, and went on to become a beloved and award-winning book.

Anansi Boys as a TV series has been a long time coming — I first started working with Endor and Red on making it over a decade ago. We needed Amazon Prime to come on board and embrace our vision, we needed a lead director with the craft and vision of Hanelle Culpepper, we needed the creative and technical wizardry of Douglas Mackinnon (who worked out how we could push the bounds of the possible to shoot a story set all over the world in a huge studio outside Edinburgh), and we needed the rest of the amazing talents that nobody knows about yet.”

Gaiman continued: “I am thrilled that Sir Lenny Henry is one of our executive producers. He was there when it was conceived, he narrated the audiobook and he has kept the heart of the production true. We are trying to make a new kind of show with Anansi Boys, and to break ground with it to make something that celebrates and rejoices in diversity both in front of and behind the camera. I’m so thrilled it’s happening and that people will be meeting Mr. Nancy, Charlie and Spider, the Bird Woman and the rest of them.”

Filming is expected to get underway later this year in Scotland.

“I’ve been a huge fan (and couch sleeping friend) of Neil Gaiman’s for over 30 years and I have loved being a part of the Anansi Boys creative team,” stated Henry. “I love that we’re going to have a suitably diverse cast and crew to tell this joyous story! What’s great is that the whole production is listening and ensuring that inclusion is happening and is being seen to be done.”

The limited series is an Amazon Studios, The Blank Corporation, Endor Productions, and RED Production Company production.

“I’m thrilled that we get to take the story of Anansi Boys from page to screen with the creative powers of Neil and Lenny, as well as an extraordinary group of other writers, directors, and a cast and crew of so many diverse perspectives alongside us,” said Mackinnon. Mackinnon and Neil Gaiman previously collaborated on Amazon’s Good Omens series starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant. “We’ll be shooting in brand new studios in Scotland where we’ll have the most cutting-edge CGI technology in the world to make all the magic and wonder of Anansi Boys come to life.”

The Plot, Courtesy of Amazon:

Based on Gaiman’s novel of the same name, Anansi Boys follows Charlie Nancy, a young man who is used to being embarrassed by his estranged father. But when his father dies, Charlie discovers that his father was Anansi: trickster god of stories. And he learns that he has a brother. Now his brother, Spider, is entering Charlie’s life, determined to make it more interesting but making it a lot more dangerous.

‘Demonic’ Unveils a New Incredibly Creepy Full Trailer

The first teaser trailer for writer/director Neill Blomkamp’s Demonic gave absolutely nothing away. The new lengthy trailer lets us into the visually arresting world Blomkamp’s created for his fourth feature film.

Blomkamp’s (District 9, Elysium, Chappie) supernatural horror/sci-fi film stars Carly Pope (The Good Doctor), Chris William Martin (The Vampire Diaries), Michael J. Rogers (Siren), Nathalie Boltt (Riverdale), Kandyse McClure (Hemlock Grove), and Terry Chen (Jessica Jones). The behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography Byron Kopman, production designer Richard Simpson, and editor Austyn Daines (additional editing by Julian Clarke). The music is by Ola Strandh and Viktor Muller is the visual effects supervisor.

Discussing the inspiration for Demonic, writer/director Neill Blomkamp said, “It was really a combination of things. When the pandemic occurred and my other projects were put on hold, I wanted to do something we could control and just go out and shoot. References for that were films like The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity, so I decided to do something in the horror realm. I also had this idea of using a new technology called volumetric capture, which lent itself more to science fiction. So it became a case of how do you create a story with those elements.”

Blomkamp offered the following description of the volumetric capture process, something he believes has never been used in a feature film to this extent before. “It’s basically three-dimensional video, where you’re turning your actors into geometry. You need about 260 cameras arranged in some sort of grid or dome that can see the actors from all points of view,” explained Blomkamp. “On our stage where we had our 260-camera volumetric setup, the only thing we were gathering was the actors. They were in a very difficult non-conducive-to-acting environment where there was scaffolding and cameras everywhere they looked. And the only elements we got out of those sessions were the actors in that volume. Then separately we photographed the environments they would be put into, which are turned into 3D objects. And then you drop your actor captures into those 3D environments. Once they’re combined, you can set up the shot exactly as you want to see it in the movie and film that with your virtual digital camera.”

IFC Midnight has set an August 20, 2021 release in theaters, on demand, and digital.

‘Vivo’ Animated Musical Comedy Announces August Release and Unveils a Song Clip

Netflix has just announced the animated music-driven comedy Vivo will premiere on the streaming service on August 6, 2021. The family-friendly, wild beasty-friendly animated film features the voice of Lin-Manuel Miranda as a kinkajou on a special mission. Music icon Gloria Estefan also lends her voice to a key character in Netflix’s Vivo.

The release date announcement was accompanied by a nearly four-minute video featuring the original song, “Keep the Beat,” performed by Lin-Manuel Miranda as Vivo the kinkajou and newcomer Ynairaly Simo as Gabi. The clip introduces Vivo and his traveling companion Gabi as they set out on a quest to deliver a special song.

The cast of the animated comedy also includes Zoe Saldaña as Rosa, Juan de Marcos as Andrés, Brian Tyree Henry as Dancarino, Michael Rooker as Lutador, and Nicole Byer as Valentina.

Oscar nominee Kirk DeMicco (The Croods) directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Quiara Alegría Hudes (In the Heights), based on a story by Hudes and Peter Barsocchini. Brandon Jeffords (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2) co-directed. Lin-Manuel Miranda composed the original songs and executive produced with Laurence Mark, Louis Koo Tin Lok, and Alex Lacamoire. Lisa Stewart, Michelle L.M. Wong, and Rich Moore served as producers.

Acclaimed (and Oscar-winning) cinematographer Roger Deakins (Blade Runner 2049) contributed to the film as visual consultant. Tony and Grammy award-winner Alex Lacamoire (The Greatest Showman) is the film’s composer and executive music producer.

The Plot, Courtesy of Netflix:

From Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation — the studio that brought you Oscar winner Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and this year’s critically acclaimed blockbuster The Mitchells vs. The Machines — comes Vivo, an animated musical adventure featuring all-new songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda, the Tony, Grammy, and Pulitzer Prize-winning creator of Hamilton and In the Heights.

Vivo follows a one-of-kind kinkajou (aka a rainforest “honey bear,” voiced by Miranda), who spends his days playing music to the crowds in a lively square with his beloved owner Andrés (de Marcos). Though they may not speak the same language, Vivo and Andrés are the perfect duo through their common love of music. But when tragedy strikes shortly after Andrés receives a letter from the famous Marta Sandoval (Estefan), inviting her old partner to her farewell concert with the hope of reconnecting, it’s up to Vivo to deliver a message that Andrés never could: A love letter to Marta, written long ago, in the form of a song. Yet in order to get to Marta, who lives a world apart, Vivo will need the help of Gabi (Simo) – an energetic tween who bounces to the beat of her own offbeat drum to fulfill his owner’s wishes.

Also featuring the voices of Zoe Saldaña as Gabi’s mother, Rosa; Michael Rooker as a villainous Everglades python, Lutador; Brian Tyree Henry and Nicole Byer as a pair of star-crossed spoonbills; and Katie Lowes, Olivia Trujillo, and Lidya Jewett as a trio of well-meaning but overzealous scout troops, Vivo is an exhilarating story about gathering your courage, finding family in unlikely friends, and the belief that music can open you to new worlds.
