Magic Johnson Discusses ‘They Call Me Magic’ Documentary Series

NBA Hall of Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson describes his Apple TV+ documentary series They Call Me Magic as a life journey about his family and career, on and off the basketball court. The four-part docuseries premieres on April 22, 2022 and features Johnson, his friends, family members, and NBA players discussing all aspects of the NBA superstar’s life including how an HIV diagnosis spurred him to become a community activist.

During the recent Television Critics Association winter press panel, Johnson reflected on the process of revisiting defining moments in his career while working on this docuseries.

“Whether that was winning championships or crying when Dr. Jerry Buss – I was there when he was dying, his last day – whether it was announcing HIV, whether that’s when I opened the movie theaters in the Black community…I can keep going. It was so many things that it brought back some incredible memories for me to do this documentary and I’m so proud of it,” said Johnson.

“One thing I always love is the fact that I want to be proud of something. I want to be able to walk around and say, ‘Hey, this is so good. This is quality. It’s my story.’ And that’s why I’m so happy that partnering with Apple allowed me to do that. And so, this is an amazing journey that I’ve been on. I don’t want it to stop. It will not stop. And also, how I felt becoming a Dodger owner. You think about Jackie Robinson being the first one and then here I am, one of the only African American baseball owners in Major League Baseball. So, it’s just all those things that I’m able to share with people.”

Asked how it felt to relive magical moments at the Forum and his relationships with Pat Riley and Dr. Jerry Buss, Johnson replied, “Oh, man, you talk about the best moments of my life, when you think about teaming up with Dr. Jerry Buss – and he was a rookie owner (and) I was a rookie that first year – and for us to go all the way, especially after I had just won the 1979 National Championship playing against Larry Bird in Indiana State. And what was so amazing about that game, it’s still the number-one-watched college basketball game in history. I mean, that’s crazy. But teaming up with Dr. Jerry Buss and then eventually having Pat Riley as my coach only took me to a whole other level.

First of all, Pat Riley coached me. He was a tough coach. He made me a better basketball player but also he made me a better man and a better person. So, a lot of things that he was teaching on the court also translated to everyday life.

And then Dr. Buss, for him to take a 19, 20-year-old rookie up under his wing and treat me like his son…that just didn’t happen back in those days. And so, we were together almost every day, all the time. He was just dropping knowledge on me, teaching me. We talked about not only basketball and the Lakers, but we talked about life and where do I see myself 10 years, 15 years from now. He used to always ask me those type of questions. ‘Okay, now we got to build a strategy to help you accomplish that. Make sure that come to fruition.’ So, it was all those things that he was just preparing me for life after basketball.”

Johnson continued: “And sure enough once it was over, I was ready already because I had a great teacher. I had a great role model. I had a great mentor in Dr. Jerry Buss. And then Pat made me a perfectionist. That’s why my team gets mad at me today because I like everything done the right way. And so that’s because of Pat Riley.”

Magic Johnson They Call Me Magic
Earvin “Magic” Johnson in “They Call Me Magic,” premiering globally April 22, 2022 on Apple TV+.

Speaking of defining moments, when Johnson tested positive for HIV it was considered to be a death sentence. Johnson was committed to fighting for his life and never thought about giving up.

“I’m all about winning. I’ve always been that way. I think that I never said hey, at the end that I’m going to die. What I tried to do is ask my doctors, ‘What do I have to do to be able to live for a long time?’

And so everything that they told me – take my meds, have a positive attitude, work out – the things that they told me to do, I did those things. And then also be comfortable with my new status. I think that was the main thing. Because I was giving up the game that I love in basketball and that was hard for me to do. And so, I think at the end of the day I’ve done everything the right way.

Johnson added: “But last but not least – this is the most probably important thing and this is why I’m probably still here is because of my support system: my wife, Cookie, my kids, my parents, my brothers and sisters. […] So that’s what it’s all about. And, again, it’s been an amazing journey. You think about 30 years this year – that’s incredible – that I announced HIV.”

The docuseries also touches on the decades-long relationship between Johnson and Larry Bird. Johnson confirmed they remain good friends and continue to enjoy each other’s company.

“Larry and I are busy working together. We’re business partners like that. We shoot commercials together, and we see each other, hang out, and we’re just really good friends. I’m so glad that God put Larry Bird into my life because he made me a better basketball player, as well as a better man, and so I think I did the same for him. He pushed me to limits that I never thought I could go to, and I think I did the same for him. That’s what it’s all about.

We’ve been linked together since ’79, and we’re still – even today when I go speak or I’m anywhere, not a single moment that a person won’t say, ‘Hey, man, I love you versus Larry, the Lakers versus the Celtics.’ That always comes up every single time. So, we were blessed to have each other and be in that rivalry. There hasn’t been a rivalry in the NBA since then, and so thank you LB – that’s what I call him,” said Johnson.

How many years has it been since it was announced, right? I know, I know! But rest assured we’ve been making steady progress all along! It’s not easy when you’re working with people from different cultures! But it’s precisely that process that can yield something special! For now, we’re able to announce the main cast! Rather, we need to hurry and announce it or else it’ll be leaked, apparently! Hilarious, lol.

Their face, the size of their mouths and hands, their aura, the way they carry themselves, their voice, their acting skills, their height, the balance amongst the Straw Hat Crew, etc…! We decided on this cast after numerous discussions involving people around the world! These are the people who will be our Straw Hat Pirates! It’ll take a bit more time to get this show done, but we’ll continue to do our best to deliver a show that we’re confident will be enjoyed by everyone around the world! Look forward to more updates in the future!” said Eiichrio Oda.

  • ‘Hard Knocks’ Season 17 Focuses on the Detroit Lions

    Hard Knocks Detroit Lions

HBO and NFL Films will be shining the spotlight on the Detroit Lions for the upcoming season of the sports documentary series Hard Knocks. More than 1,750 hours of footage will be shot for the Emmy Award-winning series’ 17th season, Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Detroit Lions.

“We are excited about the opportunity to showcase the City of Detroit and the amazing culture we are building at the Lions,” stated Detroit Lions Team President and CEO, Rod Wood. “HBO Sports and NFL Films are the best of the best and we know they will be excellent partners in sharing our story with football fans around the world.”

Fun fact: According to HBO and NFL Films, 11 of the most recent 13 teams spotlighted by Hard Knocks have equaled or improved their regular-season records. So, Lions fans have that going for them.

“As Hard Knocks enters its third decade inside NFL training camps, we are both thrilled and thankful for the opportunity to feature a historic franchise like the Lions,” said NFL Films Vice President and Senior Coordinating Producer, Ken Rodgers. “The city, the culture and the coaching staff in Detroit all have an exciting energy that will make the show must-watch television this summer.”

Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Detroit Lions will kick off its five-episode season on August 9, 2022 at 10pm ET/PT. New episodes premiere on subsequent Tuesdays leading up to the September 6 season finale.

The Baltimore Ravens were the first NFL team to participate in Hard Knocks. Recent seasons have focused on the Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Rams, Los Angeles Chargers, Oakland Raiders (before they moved to Vegas), and Cleveland Browns. Liev Schreiber has narrated all but one season of the docuseries and is confirmed to return for season 17.

HBO released the following description of the upcoming season:

Camera crews will head to the Lions’ training camp in Allen Park, Michigan in the next few months to begin filming. The action will heat up in August when the cinema verité show focuses on the daily lives and routines of players and coaches. Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Detroit Lions will chronicle head coach Dan Campbell entering his second season leading the team and an intriguing mix of young emerging stars, established veterans, free agent additions, and highly regarded rookie hopefuls throughout training camp and the preseason.

A 30-person NFL Films crew will be at the Lions’ training camp in Allen Park, shooting more than 1,750 hours of footage over the course of the series. Camera and sound crews will have unencumbered access to players’ and coaches’ meeting rooms, training rooms, living quarters, and practice fields.

Oscars 2022 Winners: ‘CODA’ is Named Best Picture

Troy Kotsur and Siân Heder arrive with the cast of CODA Eugenio Derbez, Marlee Matlin, Amy Forsyth and guest on the red carpet of the 94th Oscars® (Photo Credit: Michael Baker / A.M.P.A.S.)

The extended awards season finally wrapped up with the announcement of the 2022 Oscars winners on March 27, 2022. Writer/director Jane Campion’s brilliant Western The Power of the Dog led the list of nominees with 12 but only captured one win – Best Director. Dune cleaned up in the technical awards, emerging as the 94th Academy Awards‘ big winner with six Oscars including cinematography, editing, and score.

Immediately out of the gate the 2022 Oscars broke with tradition by opening with Beyonce singing “Be Alive” from King Richard live on the tennis court in Compton, CA where the Williams sisters practiced their skills. (“Be Alive” is nominated for Best Original Song.) That was followed by Amy Schumer, Regina Hall, and Wanda Sykes making their first appearances as co-hosts, with Amy Schumer scoring one of the best early laughs by joking, “This year the Academy hired three women to host because it’s cheaper than hiring one man.”

The Academy made the controversial choice to give out awards prior to the live broadcast and then play the acceptance speeches during the show. Ultimately, it didn’t help cut the length of the broadcast (which still ran half an hour over) and only served to upset members of the Academy who felt slighted by the decision. The broadcast also included fan-voted categories in an attempt to pull in a bigger audience. Hopefully, that failed experiment will not be included in future shows.

Unfortunately, the historic wins (including Ariana DeBose as the first openly queer woman of color to win Best Supporting Actress) and moving speeches were overshadowed by what’s been dubbed the slap heard round the world. Chris Rock took the stage to present the Best Documentary Oscar and one of his jokes set Will Smith off. Rock joked about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head saying, “Jada, I love ya. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it.” The joke was in extremely poor taste as Pinkett-Smith lost her hair due to alopecia (an auto-immune disorder), and Will Smith walked onto the stage from the audience and slapped Rock in the face. Rock was obviously stunned by Smith’s reaction and said, “Will Smith just smacked the s*** out of me!”

Smith didn’t leave it at that. Instead, he yelled, “Keep my wife’s name out your f**king mouth!” twice as Rock attempted to figure out how to continue with the presentation of the Best Documentary Oscar.

#WhatJustHappened immediately trended on Twitter as viewers reacted to the slap. The celebratory vibe left the broadcast after Smith slapped Rock, shifting into more of a “let’s just get through this” atmosphere.

Will Smith was allowed to remain in the audience even after the altercation and took to the stage – this time invited – to accept the Best Actor Oscar for King Richard. Smith delivered a long, emotional speech that wasn’t cut off by the producers. Here’s the transcript:

“Oh, man. Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family. In this time in my life, in this moment, I am overwhelmed by what God is calling on me to do and be in this world. Making this film, I got to protect Aunjanue Ellis, who is one of the strongest, most delicate people I’ve ever met. I got to protect Saniyya [Sidney] and Demi [Singleton], the two actresses that played Venus and Serena. I’m being called on in my life to love people and to protect people and to be a river to my people.

I know to do what we do, you got to be able to take abuse. You got to be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business you got to be able to have people disrespecting you. And you got to smile, you got to pretend like that’s okay. Richard Williams, and what I loved – thank you, Dee — Denzel said a few minutes ago, ‘At your highest moment, be careful, that’s when the devil comes for you.’ It’s like, I want to be a vessel for love.

I want to say thank you to Venus and Serena. I want to say thank you to Venus and Serena and the entire Williams family for entrusting me with your story. That’s what I want to do. I want to be an ambassador of that kind of love and care and concern. I want to apologize to the Academy. I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not – I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award. Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said, just like they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things.

To my mother, a lot of this moment is really complicated for me. To my mother, she didn’t want to come out, she had her knitting friends, she has a knitting crew, she’s in Philly watching. Being able to love and care for my mother and my family, my wife, I’m taking up too much time, thank you for this honor. Thank you for this moment. And thank you on behalf of Richard and the entire Williams family. Thank you. I hope the Academy invites me back. Thank you.”

‘Outlander’ Season 6 Episode 4 Recap: “Hour of the Wolf” Tells Ian’s Mohawk Story

Starz’s Outlander season six episode four fills in gaps in Ian’s story, revealing new details about his time spent with the Mohawk. At the end of season four, Ian agreed to remain with the Mohawk in exchange for Roger’s freedom. Those months Ian spent with the tribe helped shape the man he is now, and episode four – “Hour of the Wolf” – allows viewers who haven’t read Diana Gabaldon’s novels a glimpse into Ian’s short-lived marriage to Emily.

Episode four opens with Ian’s head being shaved and his body prepared for the official ceremony that rinses all white blood from his veins (figuratively, not literally) and makes him an adopted member of the Mohawk tribe. He’s welcomed and told he’ll be loved, just like any member of their family. He’s given his Mohawk name, Wolf’s Brother.

Returning to current events, Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) have just finished making love when Jamie calls himself “Greased Lightning.” Claire laughs and corrects him, explaining that means something extremely fast – not lubricated brilliance. Jamie promises he can be fast, too.

Their sexy conversation’s ruined by the sound of sneezing from another room. Major Donald MacDonald (Robin Laing) is allergic to cats and is having a rough time dealing with adorable Adso’s presence in the Fraser home. Fortunately, MacDonald plans to leave for New Bern the following day.

Jamie prepares for his trip to deliver a shipment of guns to the Cherokee by placing Fergus (César Domboy) in charge of selling their trade goods. It’s an important job but he trusts Fergus to handle business, and Fergus recognizes this is Jamie’s way of helping him heal. Jamie admits he truly believes time and distance will help Fergus.

Both men miss the time they spent together in the print shop in Edinburgh. “I had faith in you then, lad,” says Jamie. “I have faith in you still. You must try to find faith in yourself once again, mon fils.”

Fergus is grateful Jamie’s saved his life once again, but Jamie claims he’s only balanced the scales.

Fergus will be accompanied by Mr. Bug and they’ll stop and visit Aunt Jocasta on the trip.

A short while later Jamie joins Brianna (Sophie Skelton), Roger (Richard Rankin), Ian (John Bell), and some British soldiers to test the guns. Roger’s proud of his skills but it seems Brianna’s mind is elsewhere.

Major MacDonald tells Jamie to inform Chief Bird Who Sings in the Evening the guns have been tested. Ian corrects MacDonald; it’s Chief Bird Who Sings in the Morning not evening. Ian pokes fun at Donald’s name, pointing out it just means Donald Son of Donald.

Back to the topic at hand, MacDonald advises Jamie the governor wants Chief Bird to swear that he’ll back the British if the King asks for the Cherokees’ help.

Jamie and Brianna chat on the porch, and he’s concerned something’s wrong. Brianna’s decided to fill her father in on what will happen to the Cherokee, explaining that in 60 years they’ll be forced off their land, and 8,000 will die on the Trail of Tears. She believes it’s important Jamie be aware of what’s in store for the Cherokee.

Ian accompanies Jamie to deliver the guns and is shocked to see horses belonging to Mohawks at the Cherokee camp. Kaheroton (Braeden Clarke) greets Ian, calling him Wolf’s Brother, and it’s obvious Ian isn’t happy to be reunited with the man he once considered a brother.

That evening, Ian and Jamie relax around a campfire and Ian finally confides in Jamie, revealing details about what happened while he was with the Mohawks. He met a beautiful young woman who he called Emily because he couldn’t pronounce her name (Wakyo’teyehsnonhsa) properly. They fell in love and married, learning each other’s language and sharing stories of their history. It was a peaceful time and Ian was even talked into singing about his home across the sea.

Ian was thrilled when Emily became pregnant and devastated when she lost their baby girl. He was sent into the woods to pray and it was Kaheroton who delivered the news Emily survived but the baby did not.

Ian confesses to Jamie he never got a chance to see his baby girl. She was wrapped up in furs and buried before he could even look at his child.

Ian reveals Emily became pregnant again and, again, she miscarried.

A few months later it was determined Ian’s spirit isn’t Mohawk so he and Emily will never be able to have a child. He was sent back to his own people but refused to leave until he heard from Emily that she wanted him to go. Emily told him it is what must be and asked him to leave.

Ian was heartbroken to hear this from her lips and to see Kaheroton had already taken over his place in her life. “He was my friend…my brother. He kent how much I loved her,” says a tearful Ian.

Ian wonders if he should have fought harder for Emily but Jamie believes he did everything he could. Ian asks if Jamie would have just left Claire, but Jamie claims that’s different.

The following morning a fellow Indian Agent, Alexander “Scotchee” Cameron, introduces himself to Jamie. Scotchee’s been dying to meet Jamie to hear if all the stories – including being a bear killer – are true. Scotchee’s the agent to the Overhill Cherokee and explains he’s there to marry off a woman to Chief Bird and to trade.

Alexander’s interested in tasting Jamie’s whisky and gets himself good and drunk. He confesses he bought land from the Cherokee in Tennessee and can get some for Jamie if he’s interested. Jamie’s surprised to learn of the purchase since it’s against the treaty to take land so far west into Indian territory. Scotchee justifies his purchase by claiming the Cherokee wanted to sell the land.

Jamie turns down the offer, claiming he doesn’t want to be involved in illegal deals.

Back at Fraser’s Ridge, Claire and her apprentice, Malva (Jessica Reynolds), use Lizzie (Caitlin O’Ryan) and Josiah (Paul Gorman) as guinea pigs. Claire wants to test out the ether and although both Lizzie and Josiah aren’t exactly thrilled to go under, they agree to the experiment.

The ether works so well that neither Lizzie nor Josiah realize they’ve been knocked out when they awaken!

Once more to the Cherokee camp we go and Jamie presents Chief Bird with the rifles. Jamie explains they want a promise of loyalty in return, but Chief Bird doesn’t want to talk of war on this day of celebration.

Ian learns Kaheroton and Emily had a son and Ian confronts the man he once considered a brother claiming he turned his wife against him. The confrontation turns into a fistfight that Jamie and Scotchee are forced to break up.

A noticeably drunk Scotchee places a knife to Kaheroton’s throat, insulting him while kicking him to the ground. Jamie steps in to stop Kaheroton from attacking Scotchee’s retreating back. Kaheroton demands an apology and Scotchee refuses, instead challenging Kaheroton to a duel with pistols.

    Kaheroton accepts the challenge.

Away from all the drama, Jamie and Ian have a quiet moment by the river. Ian’s upset Kaheroton had a son but God took his baby girl. His baby didn’t have a name and wasn’t baptized, but he always thinks of her as Iseabail. He wonders if God’s punishing him but Jamie doesn’t believe that’s possible. God doesn’t punish people.

Ian can’t bear the thought of Iseabail wandering, lost. Jamie reveals his daughter Faith was also lost and he never had a chance to hold her either. Jamie believes after death we go home to the Lord. He leads Ian in a prayer to Faith, asking her to look for Iseabail in Heaven.

Ian brings Kaheroton Jamie’s pistol for the duel, believing Kaheroton deserves a fighting chance. Kaheroton asks Ian to go to Emily and his son if he dies. He hands Ian a bracelet and asks him to swear he’ll care for his wife and son.

Ian accepts the bracelet but doesn’t reply.

Chief Bird informs Jamie he’ll fight with the British. Jamie asks to speak with Chief Bird privately and then explains the women in his family can see the future. His wife and daughter have both seen the Cherokees being taken from their land in 60 years. They’ll be forced to a new place and many will die on the journey “so much that the path they tread will be called the trail where they wept.” (Correct description, incorrect name – but close enough.)

Jamie further explains a man named General Winfield Scott will be the person responsible.

Jamie says the weapons he’s provided won’t be enough to save them, and Chief Bird wonders why Jamie bothered warning him then if that’s true. Jamie admits he can only reveal the future to a few select people or else he’d be labeled a madman. He warns Chief Bird not to fight or go to the new place. Instead, his people should hide.

“If you pass this warning to your descendants, then perhaps they will escape and live,” says Jamie.

Chief Bird agrees to tell his sons and grandsons.

Jamie adds, “Whoever you fight with – be it King George’s men or our enemies – fight for yourselves.”

Chief Bird asks if he paid a great deal for his wife. Jamie confirms he did, adding that she’s well worth the cost.

Everyone gathers to witness the duel, and Jamie asks one final time if this can be settled without bloodshed. It can’t. Jamie orders them to step out the distance, stop, and wait for his command to fire.

Jamie begins counting but Scotchee turns around early. He’s about to shoot Kaheroton in the back when Ian acts quickly and disarms him. Kaheroton’s given the opportunity to shoot Scotchee and advances on the man who pleads for his life. Scotchee claims he was only joking when he insulted the Mohawk, and Kaheroton fires his gun into the sky.

“He’s proven himself a coward. Let him live with his shame,” says Kaheroton.

Kaheroton returns the gun to Jamie and Ian returns the bracelet to his former friend, acknowledging God chose him to be with Emily.

Alone, Ian removes the wolf necklace Emily gave him when they first met. He gently kisses it and then sends it off floating down the river. One chapter of his life is finished.

Ian tells Jamie he’s learned he can be both Wolf’s Brother and Ian Murray at the same time. Jamie reminds him it doesn’t matter what he calls himself; what matters is his heart.

Back on Fraser’s Ridge, Malva wonders what Claire’s writing in her book. Claire offers to show her and explains she writes out recipes and procedures. She does so so that others can benefit from her knowledge.

Malva admits her brother and father don’t like her spending time with Claire, but she loves it.

Jamie arrives home and Claire asks Malva to straighten up the surgery. Claire’s happy to have her husband back and joins him in the barn to celebrate their reunion. They kiss and Jamie explains they had a day’s delay because Mohawk were at the camp. He reveals he learned what happened during Ian’s time with them, but doesn’t have the strength to tell the whole story now.

Jamie does say Ian learned he can be both Mohawk and Scottish. However, Jamie’s figured out he can’t be a rebel and a loyalist at once because it’s ripping him apart. He needs to resign as Indian Agent.

Claire reminds him he couldn’t keep his hands off her the last time he returned from the Cherokee. Jamie admits he’s a bit more tired this time…but not too tired to refuse to make love to his gorgeous wife.

Trouble looms as Malva spies on Claire and Jamie while they make love!
