Review: ‘Last Night in Soho’ From Writer/Director Edgar Wright

Last Night in Soho feels more David Lynch or David Cronenberg than Edgar Wright. Yet even though it’s the least Wright-vibey film of his career, there’s something about the way he twists the horror genre that makes Last Night in Soho feel like the right entry point into psychological thrillers for the filmmaker who’s given us everything from Shaun of the Dead to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Baby Driver.

Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie) dreams of becoming a fashion designer and is over the moon when she learns she’s been accepted into a prestigious London fashion designer college. She celebrates with twirls and swirls to the rhythm of ‘60s pop hits – an old soul trapped in a young woman’s body. From the first frame it’s evident Eloise marches to the beat of a drum only she can hear. It’s also evident this quirky artistic woman has little in common with her peers. Maybe it’s the fact her dead mom pops into her life at random times that keeps Eloise from even attempting to fit in.

Eloise either doesn’t care about first impressions or makes the wrong assumptions about her fellow students as she shows up at the dorm in her own handmade creations. She looks completely out of place among the Kardashian-loving women who reside there and is immediately the brunt of unkind jokes.

Eloise’s loving grandmother, Peggy (Rita Tushingham), reminded her before she took off for college that her mom killed herself after moving to the city. And through the film’s first act we see hints that Eloise could be just as capable of suffering a mental breakdown as her deceased mom.

In order to escape being the butt of mean girl jokes, Eloise takes a part-time job and moves out of the dorm and into a room at Ms. Collins’ house. Ms. Collins (Diana Rigg) expects her new tenant to abide by strict rules, including no boys upstairs, and the strait-laced Eloise quickly agrees to her terms.

Because the official synopsis (and trailers) reveal Eloise is somehow able to travel back in time to the 1960s, I feel safe in including at least that much in this review. Edgar Wright’s made it really difficult to discuss Anya Taylor-Joy’s role in Last Night in Soho and how her character, a gorgeous aspiring singer named Sandie, plays an important part in Eloise’s contemporary London experience.

Once Eloise moves into Ms. Collins’ house, her dreams are filled with people and places from this very neighborhood but back in the ‘60s. She’s somehow able to eavesdrop on Sandie and becomes obsessed with following this vibrant singer’s journey, anxiously returning home each night from her shift at the bar so she can slip off to sleep and join the ambitious and buoyant Sandie on her quest for fame.

Eloise can only watch as Sandie begins making all the wrong decisions, beginning with choosing to become involved with a sleazy promoter named Jack (Matt Smith). As Eloise becomes more caught up in Sandie’s life, her future as a college student and designer is put in jeopardy. Eloise’s ability to discern what’s real from what’s imaginary becomes increasingly difficult and following in her mother’s footsteps edges ever closer to becoming a reality.

As Eloise increasingly spirals out of control, Last Night in Soho transitions from a psychological thriller to a full-on supernatural horror, complete with grotesque spirits.

Edgar Wright’s twisted tale is incredibly stylish, with both the London of today and of the 1960s brought to life in intricate detail. Wright’s use of different color palettes for the two decades adds to the illusion Eloise and Sandie are separated by five decades. And then, as Eloise loses herself in Sandie’s world, the palette merges, and her wardrobe shifts to mirror the woman whose life has become more real to her than the people she actually interacts with on a daily basis.

For a good three-quarters of the film, Wright’s screenplay, co-written by Krysty Wilson-Cairns, seems a little too complex for its own good. However, Wright and Wilson-Cairns deliver one hell of a sucker punch with the ending. There are so many layers to peel off before it can stick the landing that it’s possible some in the audience might disengage before getting to the big payoff. Fortunately, outstanding performances by Thomasin McKenzie, Anna Taylor Joy, and Matt Smith – along with the late great Diana Rigg – drive the film and hold your attention through the jarring shifts in tone.

Thomasin McKenzie is the heart and soul of the film and is pitch-perfect as a college student who briefly believes the world is her oyster before becoming mired in the quicksand of Sandie’s world. McKenzie plays Eloise as so heartbreakingly naïve that it’s impossible to not become invested in her story. As Eloise’s mental health declines, McKenzie never overplays her condition. McKenzie’s able to maintain a grounded element to the character even during fantastical, extreme moments (of which there are quite a few).

There are a few rough spots…Eloise’s wannabe boyfriend is too good to be true and I’m not sure about the ethics of Eloise stealing ideas for dress designs from a ghost…but there’s too much juicy goodness to this bizarre genre-bending thriller to let the minor missteps detract from the overall experience.

Writer/director Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho is strange and fascinating. It’s also refreshingly original and provides a satisfying break from the comic book adaptations, sequels, and spinoffs currently flooding theaters.

‘New Amsterdam’ Season 4 Episode 7 Photos, Promo, and Plot Details

An ambulance crash and Sharpe’s management decisions are the focus of NBC’s New Amsterdam season four episode seven. “Harmony” is set to air on November 2, 2021.

The cast of season four is led by Ryan Eggold as Medical Director Max Goodwin. Janet Montgomery returns as Dr. Lauren Bloom, Freema Agyeman stars as Dr. Helen Sharpe, Jocko Sims plays Dr. Floyd Reynolds, and Tyler Labine is Dr. Iggy Frome. Michelle Forbes guest stars as Dr. Fuentes.

“Harmony” Plot: Max and Bloom are shocked when a deadly ambulance crash reveals a dangerous plan. Dr. Fuentes pressures Iggy to take on patients. Sharpe realizes her own cost-cutting has adversely affected her department. Reynolds, Baptiste and Malvo strive to reach an accord.

The Season 4 Plot, Courtesy of NBC:

After a turbulent year of sacrifice and hardship, Medical Director Max Goodwin and the team at New Amsterdam begin a well-deserved new chapter in their lives. The opening episode, titled “More Joy,” reflects both the drive of characters and the tone of season four. More joy: How can we find it, and how can we hold on to it?

For Max that means acknowledging and surrendering to his long simmering feelings towards Dr. Helen Sharpe. While this new relationship brings its own set of challenges, Max continues his optimistic – and quixotic – quest to improve our nation’s healthcare system.

Continuing to navigate their own personal journeys – including Dr. Bloom’s relationship with Dr. Leyla Shinwari, who is now her resident, Dr. Frome’s new career and Dr. Reynolds’ personal entanglements – the doctors will strive to embrace the joy and successes in their lives.

But there is a surprise in store for our heroes. Dr. Veronica Fuentes is joining the New Amsterdam team to help turn around the overburdened and underfunded hospital. Her first order of business will be to tear down every progressive program Max has erected. Max will have his work cut out for him if he is going to outwit this calm, poised and fearless fixer.

‘Lightyear’ Teaser Trailer Delves into Buzz’s Backstory

Disney and Pixar just dropped a minute and a half teaser trailer for Lightyear, the 2022 feature film that explores the origins of the Buzz Lightyear toy from the Toy Story franchise. The trailer introduces astronaut and Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear as he heads into space. Backed by “Starman,” the teaser trailer shows Buzz’s adventures in space and ends with his catchphrase “to infinity and beyond” minus the beyond.

Chris Evans (The Avengers‘ Captain America) provides the voice of the Space Ranger who inspired the toy voiced by Tim Allen in the Toy Story film franchise. “The phrase ‘a dream come true’ gets thrown around a lot, but I’ve never meant it more in my life,” said Evans. “Anyone who knows me knows that my love for animated films runs deep. I can’t believe that I get to be a part of the Pixar family and work with these truly brilliant artists who tell stories unlike anyone else. Watching them work is nothing short of magic. I pinch myself every day.”

Finding Dory co-director Angus MacLane directs and Toy Story That Time Forgot‘s Galyn Susman produces.

Disney and Pixar describe Lightyear as a sci-fi action-adventure that presents “the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear — the hero who inspired the toy — introducing the legendary Space Ranger who would win generations of fans.”

Also, TC makes a touching decision on how to help Cade.

Magnum P.I. Description, Courtesy of CBS:

Magnum P.I. is a modern take on the classic series centering on Thomas Magnum, a decorated former Navy SEAL who, upon returning home from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator. A charming rogue, an American hero and a die-hard Detroit Tigers fan, Magnum lives in a guest cottage on Robin’s Nest, the luxurious estate where he works as a security consultant to supplement his P.I. business.

The “majordomo” of the property is Juliet Higgins, a beautiful and commanding disavowed MI:6 agent whose second job is to keep Magnum in line, with the help of her two Dobermans. When Magnum needs back-up on a job, he turns to his trusted buddies and fellow POW survivors, Theodore “TC” Calvin, a former Marine chopper pilot who runs Island Hoppers, a helicopter tour business, and Orville “Rick” Wright, a former Marine door-gunner-turned-impresario of Oahu’s coolest nightclub and the most connected man on the island.

Suspicious of Magnum’s casual attitude and presence at his crime scenes, Detective Gordon Katsumoto finds that he and Magnum are more alike than either of them care to admit. One of Magnum’s biggest supporters is Teuila “Kumu” Tuileta, the unofficial “House Mom” and cultural curator of Robin’s Nest. With keys to a vintage Ferrari in one hand, aviator sunglasses in the other, and an Old Düsseldorf longneck chilling in the fridge, Thomas Magnum is back on the case!
