‘Ted Lasso’ Season 2 Trailer: Are You Ready to Believe Again?

Jason Sudeikis returns as the eternally optimistic, fish-out-of-water soccer coach Ted Lasso in the season two trailer for Apple TV+’s award-winning comedy. The new trailer confirms Ted is ready to lead AFC Richmond to victory once again, although it appears wins are going to be hard to come by early on in the season.

Returning Ted Lasso stars include Hannah Waddingham, Brendan Hunt, Jeremy Swift, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Phil Dunster, and Nick Mohammed. Sarah Niles takes on the role of Sharon, “a sports psychologist who has been brought in to work with AFC Richmond,” in season two.

Apple TV+ has set a July 23, 2021 premiere date. Season two kicks off with the release of two episodes, followed by new episodes every Friday. Season one is currently available to binge on Apple TV+.

Season one earned a Peabody Award and Jason Sudeikis was recognized with a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe. The comedy also picked up Best Comedy Series, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actress (Hannah Waddingham) wins at the Critics Choice Awards, as well as two Writers Guild Awards. And Ted Lasso has the distinction of making the AFI Program of the Year list as the only comedy series.

Sudeikis, Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt, and Joe Kelly developed the series. In addition, Sudeikis executive produces along with Doozer Productions’ Lawrence and Jeff Ingold.

The Plot, Courtesy of Apple TV+:

Jason Sudeikis is Ted Lasso, an American football coach hired to manage a British soccer team—despite having no experience. But what he lacks in knowledge, he makes up for with optimism, underdog determination…and biscuits.

LA Lakers Office Inspires a Netflix Workplace Comedy Series

Lakers Series Executive Producers

The front office of the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers has inspired a Netflix half-hour workplace comedy series. The just-announced series is part of Mindy Kaling’s Netflix deal and will be produced by Kaling International in association with Warner Bros Television.

The untitled series received a straight-to-series order for a 10 episode first season.

Elaine Ko (Modern Family) is on board to write and serve as showrunner. Mindy Kaling (Never Have I Ever) executive produces along with Jeanie Buss, the controlling owner and president of the Los Angeles Lakers. Linda Rambis, the executive director of the Lakers, is also on board as an executive producer along with Howard Klein (The Office, The Mindy Project). Jordan Rambis will be a producer.

Netflix released the following description of the greenlit comedy series:

“The series is inspired by the personal and professional dynamic between the family owners and front office team that together run one of the most iconic franchises in all of sports: the Los Angeles Lakers. The workplace comedy follows fictional team governor Eliza Reed as she navigates NBA ownership and family drama with her best friend by her side.”

Netflix did not reveal any casting details or announce the target date for the start of production.

Mindy Kaling took to Twitter to confirm the series, tweeting, “Ahhhh so psyched about this one! ?? To be able to work with these women is a dream. I can’t wait for this show! Go @Lakers!”

‘Luca’ Movie Review: Not One of Pixar’s Best Efforts

Luca Movie
A scene from 2021’s ‘Luca’ (Photo © Disney/Pixar)

Freedom, adventure, friendship, and a sleek Vespa are the major ingredients of Disney and Pixar’s animated adventure, Luca. The film focuses on Luca (voiced by Jacob Tremblay, Doctor Sleep) a young sea monster who dreams of leaving his home and his boring life under the sea to explore the world above the surface. His over-protective parents (voiced by Maya Rudolph and Jim Gaffigan) fear the surface and all humans, believing it unsafe. They think Luca’s best off just herding his flock of fish like a shepherd.

It’s not long before Luca meets Alberto (voiced by Jack Dylan Grazer, We Are Who We Are), a young, rebellious, independent, and adventurous sea monster who quickly convinces Luca to join him above the surface on his crazy adventures. His first time out of the water and on the land finds Luca going through an extreme physical transformation into a human boy. Soon, with Alberto’s “expert” guidance, Luca learns how to walk on human legs and is ready to explore the little Italian village of Portorosso.

The two young friends quickly bond and Alberto inspires Luca to have the confidence to try things he never thought he would be able to handle, including eating ice cream, talking to humans, and most of all building and riding/crashing their homemade version of a Vespa.

While exploring the town, Luca and Alberto meet Giulia (voiced by Emma Berman), a strong-willed, red-headed tomboy who’s determined to win the Portorosso Cup. The ultra-competitive triathlon is made up of swimming, cycling, and, of course, eating huge amounts of pasta. Eager to buy their own brand new Vespa and travel the world, Luca and Alberto team up with Giulia to go up against the five-time winner of the triathlon and the town’s most obnoxious bully, Ercole Visconti (voiced by Saverio Raimondo), to win the Cup and collect the prize money.

Bright, colorful, and obviously well-intentioned, Luca is a coming-of-age story that borrows greatly from classic animated films including The Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo, and Pinocchio. It’s a light, forgettable adventure with characters who are far too reminiscent of other classic heroes. Alberto’s cocky independence, refusal to listen to any rules, and adventuresome spirit is strikingly similar to Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn.

The voice cast does a solid job bringing each character to life. Emma Berman shines as the voice of Giulia, the hyper-energetic tomboy who befriends Luca and Alberto and is eager to have some real friends of her own. Jacob Tremblay is terrific as Luca, the dreamer and “good little sea monster” who wants to be obedient to his parents but eventually gives in to his yearning to explore what lies above the surface. Tremblay gives him the right amount of innocence and wonder while discovering the world.

It’s in the pacing and the action where the film really struggles. The first 28 minutes are likely to leave young children bored due to too little action and too few funny scenes. It’s not until Luca and Alberto get to the village that the story really takes off. The film’s script and presentation are unlikely to entice teenagers and young adults into wanting to watch. Unlike so many Pixar and Disney animated films, Luca will most likely only entertain a very narrow range of children – between the ages of four to 11 – provided they’re still paying attention after the first 28 minutes.

Overall, Luca‘s basically a carefree, harmless, and unremarkable adventure that might mildly entertain youngsters.

‘Loki’ Season 1 Featurette: “Humble Loki”

Owen Wilson, Wunmi Mosaku, and Sophia Di Martino star in the new Loki featurette, with a very brief appearance by a mischievous Tom Hiddleston. The hilarious new “Humble Loki” video finds Hiddleston’s co-stars describing the God of Mischief in glowing terms.

Wilson calls Loki the MCU’s most devilishly handsome character while Mosaku adds debonair to Loki’s list of exemplary traits. Di Martino claims we can’t live without Loki’s signature wit and charm. And, finally, Hiddleston’s fellow cast members question Wilson’s declaration that Loki’s more powerful than all the Avengers put together. Di Martino wonders who wrote the script and the camera zooms to a smiling Hiddleston writing on a cue card.

Marvel Studios’ Loki premiered on June 9, 2021. New episodes arrive on Disney+ on Wednesdays, with the season finale set for July 14th.

Loki currently sits at 96% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with critics calling it a fresh and fun take on the popular character.

CBS’s new NCIS spinoff, NCIS: Hawai’i, began production in Oahu with a traditional Hawaiian blessing. The network’s Hawaii Five-0 starring Alex O’Loughlin used to kick off each season with a blessing, and this new NCIS series is following the example set by that popular CBS drama that had a successful 10 season run.

The blessing included series stars Vanessa Lachey, Noah Mills, Jason Antoon, Yasmine Al-Bustami, and Tori Anderson along with the series’ producers and crew. According to CBS, the ceremony was officiated by Kahu (Officiant) Ramsay Taum and included “traditional royal maile leis, Oli Aloha (welcoming chant), and Pule Ho’oku’u (closing prayer).”

The ocean’s constant motion and “how the moving ocean waters, driven by the winds and tides, connects the entire planet” was the theme of the blessing ceremony that took place on Mokulē‘Ia Beach on Oahu.

NCIS: Hawai’i will join CBS’s primetime lineup this fall in the Mondays at 10pm ET/PT timeslot.

The Plot: Courtesy of CBS:

The world’s most successful television series continues on the seductive shores of the Aloha State with NCIS: Hawai’i, where the first female Special Agent in Charge of NCIS Pearl Harbor, Jane Tennant (played by Vanessa Lachey), has thrived and risen through the ranks by equal parts confidence and strategy in a system that has pushed back on her every step of the way. Together with her unwavering team of specialists, they balance duty to family and country while investigating high-stakes crimes involving military personnel, national security and the mysteries of the sun-drenched island paradise itself.

Alexandria is severely compromised, left a former shell of the home it once was from the carnage and devastation left behind by the Whisperers.

Now all who live in Alexandria struggle to refortify it and feed its increasing number of residents, which include the survivors from the fall of the Kingdom and the burning of Hilltop; along with Maggie and her new group, the Wardens. Alexandria has more people than it can manage to feed and protect. Their situation is dire as tensions heat up over past events and self-preservation rises to the surface within the ravaged walls.

They must secure more food while they attempt to restore Alexandria before it collapses like countless other communities they have come across throughout the years. But where and how? More haggard and hungrier than ever before, they must dig deeper to find the effort and strength to safeguard the lives of their children, even if it means losing their own.

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to those at Alexandria, Eugene, Ezekiel, Yumiko, and Princess are still being held captive by mysterious soldiers who are members of a larger and unforthcoming group.”
