The Flash Season 6 Episode 13 Recap: “Grodd Friended Me”

“Easy, killer,” says Thawne as Wells (Tom Cavanagh). “Thawne!” answers a confused Barry (Grant Gustin) who’s locked in a cage that seems to be in the past before the particle accelerator exploded in season six episode 13 of The CW’s The Flash.

The episode begins with an aerial shot of Central City. The camera travels all over different parts of the city before finally focusing on Barry who’s desperately searching for his parents’ graves after all the changes made during Crisis. He receives a call on the comms about a meta attack downtown and speeds off as The Flash to handle it.

When he arrives, he finds Hartley Rathaway (Andy Mientus) is back in villain mode as the Pied Piper and now a dedicated enemy of Team Flash. Hartley escapes from The Flash using his post-Crisis power: he can fly.

A little later at S.T.A.R. Labs, Barry asks Gideon for an update on all the changes in Central City post-crisis. The A.I. responds with 3.725 trillion changes.

Barry’s working on improving a piece of tech when Kamilla (Victoria Park) enters along with Chester P. Runk (Brandon McKnight) who becomes the latest to learn Barry is The Flash. As Chester geeks out, he starts to fiddle with (and try to improve) the piece of tech Barry was working on. Barry snaps, tells him to stop, and reminds him he’s not part of the team.

Chester, embarrassed, leaves to sulk and Kamilla gently suggests to Barry to go easy on Chester since he’s his idol.

Over in the mirror dimension, Iris (Candice Patton) and Eva (Efrat Dor) go over again what she was doing when she got trapped in the mirror dimension. Eva says she had just perfected her prototype machine. Iris encourages her to rebuild it to use it to escape.

Meanwhile, Nash is with Allegra (Kayla Compton) and wants her to use her powers to charge a device he’s made. Only Nash sees Sherloque Wells who tells him he’s a liar. Allegra reluctantly uses her powers but the device explodes.

While picking themselves – and the shattered pieces off the floor – off the ground, Allegra sees a photo of Nash’s that has him in it with a woman who looks just like her. Allegra becomes upset, yelling at him that it’s really creepy he never told her about the woman.

At S.T.A.R. Labs, Barry tries the device Chester messed with, gets knocked out, and falls to the floor. When he wakes, he finds himself locked in a cage and minus his powers. Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) walks in smiling and starts to talk in a patronizing tone. He’s begging her to let him out because he doesn’t know what’s going on when Eobard Thawne – looking like Dr. Wells – shows up smiling. Barry thinks he’s somehow trapped in the past and swears to Thawne that whatever he’s up to he will find a way to stop him.

Mirror Iris visits Joe (Jesse L. Martin) and gets upset with him when he won’t give her the files he has on Joseph Carver. She quickly calms down and suggests they get lunch at noon. Joe agrees.

Back at S.T.A.R. Labs, Chester’s talking to Frost about Barry being upset with him. As they’re walking and talking, Frost enters the tech room to find Barry passed out on the floor. She quickly gets him up and onto a gurney.

Barry realizes something’s off after Thawne and Caitlin keep talking to him like he’s an animal. He glances into the water bowl and sees Gorilla Grodd. Barry quickly figures out he’s not back in time but trapped in Grodd’s mind in a mindscape.

It seems Chester tweaked the device and made it so strong that it allowed Grodd, who’s still locked up at ARGUS and in an induced coma to keep his telekinetic powers quiet, the ability to draw Barry into his mind.

Grodd (voiced by David Sobolov) tells Barry he wants him to know what it’s like to have nothing and that he still blames him for being in the coma. Barry, now angry, reminds Grodd of all the people he has hurt – innocent people he tried to mind control and hurt during his quest for power. “You got what you deserved,” says Barry.

Surprisingly, Grodd admits Barry’s right. It was his fault but says he’s sorry and to prove it he gives Barry back his powers and opens the cage door. Once out of the cage, Barry speeds punches Grodd and speeds off to find an exit from his mind.

Frost studies Barry’s brain waves and quickly realizes Barry and Grodd are linked together in a mindscape. She brings Chester and Kamilla up to speed on how it works and the dangers of it, warning Grodd’s mindscape can’t handle both consciousnesses and will crumble from the strain which will kill both Grodd and Barry.

Chester realizes it’s his fault because he tweaked the device and made it possible for Grodd’s brain to link with Barry’s. Chester walks off once again, feeling terrible. Frost immediately goes after him, explaining that everyone on the team at one time or another has made a mistake putting Barry in danger. Chester has to make up for it by helping to save Barry.

Chester tells Frost a story about when he was a kid and he messed up a school project but told his teacher he could fix it. The teacher answered, “In the real world people like us don’t get second chances,” referring to them being African Americans.

Frost says to Chester, “I understand some of the stuff we do in here has nothing to do with the real world, but I’m offering you a second chance because you deserve one. We all do.”

Back in Grodd’s mind, Barry – now in The Flash suit – finds the exit but discovers it’s being guarded by the Gorilla Solovar. Barry tries to explain that he needs to leave, but Solovar replies that he’s the gatekeeper and won’t allow anyone to leave. Barry tries to fight the big gorilla but loses and has to race away.

Over in the mirror dimension, Iris and Eva argue about using her prototype to try to escape. Eva finally uses the machine and sticks out her arms through the mirror. They go through but get seriously burned. Iris, shocked and upset, asks why she did that if she knew it would happen. Eva says she needed to show Iris so she would believe her.

In Grodd’s mindscape, the gorilla finds Barry and tells him he knows how life has changed post-crisis and that he has changed too. All he wants is to go to Gorilla City (now on this Earth) and live in peace. However, he needs Barry’s help or they will both die.

What Grodd says strikes home with Barry who realizes he’s been trying to hold onto the past and how things were instead of moving forward. Barry tells Grodd that in order to get past Solovar, they need to team up.

Meanwhile at Joe’s office, Mirror Iris has used the time when she knows Joe’s out to sneak onto his computer. She downloads his files on Carver.

Grodd and Barry fuse together in the mindscape (it’s a very cool scene) and go up against Solovar. It’s possible to take him down because now Grodd is able to use The Flash’s powers to fight.

Frost finally connects with Barry’s mind and after learning Barry and Grodd are fighting as a team, she warns him that he and Grodd can’t stay fused together when they exit the mindscape or they will both die. They have to separate at just the right time, down to the millisecond.

Chester suggests they use Gideon for that because the A.I. will be able to calculate it perfectly.

After a lengthy fight, Grodd and The Flash are able to defeat Solovar. With Team Flash’s assistance, they exit and separate from each other’s minds at just the right millisecond.

“You’re back,” says a smiling Frost as Barry sits up. He returns her smile and says, “Yeah, I’m back.”

The next day Frost tells Barry that Grodd has been given probation and is being tracked by ARGUS. For now, he’s free and headed to Gorilla City. She leaves saying she wants to check in with the people at ARGUS to make sure they give Grodd a real chance.

Barry has a heart-to-heart with Chester and apologizes for being short with him the other day. He acknowledges it was Chester’s idea and work with Gideon that helped him survive the mindscape. Chester tells Barry he did some checking and he found the gravesite where Barry’s parents are buried. That’s when an alert goes off about another meta attack. Barry asks Chester if he’s up to working with him on the comms, and an eager Chester jumps on the opportunity.

Iris wraps Eva’s arm wounds while Eva explains she had to show her what would happen. When she worked with her colleagues they always doubted her theories and demanded proof. Iris reveals she believes her before heading off to get more wraps for Eva’s arms.

After she’s gone, Eva’s demeanor dramatically changes. She looks through the mirror and sees Mirror Iris whose arms have the same burns. “What did you do to us?” asks Mirror Iris. “I bought us some time,” replies Eva.

The final scene shows Nash headed to talk to Allegra at The Citizen in an attempt to work things out. Before he can meet with her, Sherloque Wells appears, turns him around, and in a menacing voice (complete with glowing red evil speedster eyes) says, “He is coming.”

The Flash Season 6 Episode 13 Review:

Engaging, action-packed, and featuring some great CGI, season six episode 13 titled “Grodd Friended Me” has The Flash going up against Gorilla Grodd once more before eventually teaming up with the former villain to save himself and the giant telekinetic gorilla who just wants to live in peace. The writers, cast, and special effects crew have brought the show back on track to the kind of excitement, drama, tone, and action that’s been missing for the last two episodes.

The most impressive element of the episode is the excellent use of CGI bringing back to life Grodd and his nemesis, Solovar. The big fight scene in the forest where The Flash merges with Grodd to let him use his powers is exciting and superbly executed for the small screen.

With Nash warned “he is coming,” it looks like Team Flash is once again going to go up against the most dangerous villain they have ever had to fight, The Reverse Flash…Eobard Thawne.

‘The New Pope’ Season 2: March Episode Details and Air Details

The New Pope
Jude Law stars in ‘The New Pope’ (Photo by Gianni Fiorito / HBO)

HBO’s hour-long drama The New Pope will finish up its second season with two new episodes airing in March 2020. The network’s just released brief plot descriptions for the final two episodes – eight and nine – along with confirmed air dates.

Jude Law returns to reprise his role as Pope Pius XIII and John Malkovich stars as John Paul III.

Paolo Sorrentino created, executive produces, and directs the series. Lorenzo Mieli, Mario Gianani, Riccardo Neri, Elena Recchia, Jude Law, Caroline Benjo, Carole Scotta, Simon Arnal, Jaume Roures, Javier Méndez, Nils Hartmann, and Sonia Rovai also executive produce.

The Plot:

The follow-up to 2017’s The Young Pope from Oscar-winning filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino, The New Pope dives into the inner workings of the Vatican, while exploring the very human desires, vices and fragilities of those in power and the complexities inherent in faith today.

The series picks up where The Young Pope left off, with Jude Law’s Lenny Belardo, known as Pope Pius XIII, in a coma. Following an unpredictable and mysterious turn of events, Secretary of State Voiello (Orlando) succeeds in having Sir John Brannox (Malkovich), a charming and sophisticated moderate English aristocrat, placed on the papal throne, adopting the name John Paul III.

The new pope seems ideal, but he conceals secrets and has a certain fragility, and Voiello immediately understands that it will not be easy to replace the charismatic Pius XIII. Hanging between life and death, Lenny Belardo has become a Saint, with thousands now idolizing him, fueling the contrast between fundamentalisms.

Meanwhile, the Church is under attack from external threats and scandals striking the symbols of Christianity and risking irreversibly devastating the hierarchies. As always, however, in the Vatican, nothing is what it seems. Good and evil proceed arm-in-arm towards history, and to reach the showdown, we must wait for the events to take their course.

The New Pope March 2020 Episodes:

  • Episode 8
    Debut date: MONDAY, MARCH 2 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT)
Sofia (Cécile de France) sets out to bring an ashamed Brannox (John Malkovich) back to the Vatican from the Dolomites. Warned by Bauer of the Church’s demise unless immediate action is taken, Voiello (Silvio Orlando) is called upon to make things right and, later, mourns a tragic loss. The nuns appeal to an unaccommodating Assente.
  • Episode 9 (Season finale)
    Debut date: MONDAY, MARCH 9 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT)
John Paul III (John Malkovich) addresses his followers with a message of love that resonates. A historic meeting of the minds occurs after six children and their teacher are taken hostage on the island of Ventotene. As the Church prepares for battle, Voiello (Silvio Orlando) receives a visit from a man close to the caliph and a rescue mission has an unexpected conclusion.

The CW’s Roswell, New Mexico returns for its second season on Monday, March 16, 2020 at 9pm ET/PT. With the second season just a few weeks away, the network’s unveiled a batch of new photos from the season two premiere.

The new photos show the Ortecho family and Maria sharing a group hug, but there’s no sign of the newly resurrected Rosa. We also see Isobel in mourning at a funeral for either her recently deceased alien husband or her dead brother, Max.

The photos also reveal Michael and Alex in the middle of what doesn’t appear to be a friendly discussion.

The season two cast includes Jeanine Mason as Liz, Nathan Dean Parsons as Max Evans, Michael Trevino as Kyle, Michael Vlamis is Michael, and Lily Cowles as Isobel. Tyler Blackburn returns as Alex, Heather Hemmens is Maria, Amber Midthunder is Rosa, and Trevor St. John plays Jesse Manes.

The CW released the following details on season two:

“Once again, an Ortecho sister with a sharp tongue and a chip on her shoulder is back in Roswell after ten years gone… and she’s about to discover she’s been serving mint chip milkshakes to intergalactic aliens all her life.

In the final moments of season one, Max Evans (Parsons) used his alien powers to resurrect Rosa (Midthunder) a decade after her murder… not realizing that he was sacrificing his own life in the process. In season two, Liz (Mason) mourns her lost love by seeking comfort in science, both earthly and extraterrestrial, as Rosa turns to Kyle (Trevino) to help her find her place in the unfamiliar territory of 2019.

In their grief, Isobel (Cowles) explores potentially dangerous methods of self-defense, and Michael (Vlamis) spirals into some old bad habits, putting his relationships with Maria (Hemmens) and Alex (Blackburn) at risk. Finally, our heroes must make a deal with Jesse Manes (St. John) for information after a friend seems to vanish into thin air… and the apparent ‘alien abduction’ brings new small-town secrets to light.”

‘Devs’ – Alex Garland, Alison Pill and Cailee Spaeny Interview on FX’s Sci-fi Series

FX’s highly anticipated new sci-fi thriller Devs will premiere on Hulu on Thursday, March 5, 2020. The series is the brainchild of boundary-pushing Oscar nominated filmmaker and novelist Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation, The Beach) and, frankly, is impossible to adequately sum up in way that accurately describes the viewing experience. It’s an immersive, intellectually stimulating series that demands you pay attention to the minutest details. In other words, put your phone down and close your laptop while delving into Devs.

FX brought the Devs cast, Alex Garland, and executive producer Allon Reich (a frequent collaborator of Garland’s) to the New York Comic Con. Garland, Alison Pill, and Cailee Spaeny were teamed up for interviews with the press where the main question to be answered was what exactly is Devs.

Garland offered this basic explanation of the premise. “So, the reason I can say it is because it’s described in episode one so it feels legitimate to talk about it. They’re making a machine which takes a premise you can make about the universe that it’s determinism – that is to say that everything that happens is a result of cause and effect. Nothing ever happens that doesn’t have a prior reason that has made it happen. So, they’re working on a machine that can help them unpick the nature of cause and effect.”

Alex Garland went on to explain the machine could be applied to anything, including societal upheaval. “It could be anything open to the ability to look forwards and backwards,” said Garland. “Anything that you would be able to do that with is open to the potential of the machine.”

Garland added, “But the question is in a way not what would the results of that be but can you do it? And in figuring out whether you can do it, it opens up a whole bunch of questions about us. If you were to take a deterministic way of looking at the world, one of the consequences would be that you don’t have free will.”

“At the crux of episode one there’s a discussion about whether somebody has free will. And then the series, in a way, goes forward from there,” explained Garland.

Asked if the question of whether we have free will sparked his creation of Devs, Garland replied, “Not exactly in as much as that I arrive at this already thinking we probably don’t have free will. It seems most likely to me that we don’t have free will because I’m an atheist and because I believe in the physical laws of the universe.

The physical laws of the universe, in many ways, push you toward determinism, and determinism – if it really exists – pretty much precludes free will. We could have a big debate if that’s true or not and in the end, it would come down to individuals. But I arrive at it thinking I can’t really see where free will is supposed to exist. So, not exactly. That was the starting point rather than the end point.”

So, what is the human cost of unpicking the universe? “That is exactly the point of the story,” said Garland. “So, the point of the story is, in some respects, what is it like to be alive in a universe where cause and effect have a total relationship. And in a way it’s like if science offers up something to you that truly does change the way that you intuitively think the world must work, what affect does that have? And science does do that sometimes.”

Devs Alison Pill

Alison Pill plays Katie, a character who works in the secretive Devs division of the Bay Area tech company run by Forest (Nick Offerman). “She’s a pretty important figure there,” offered Pill. Cailee Spaeny’s Lyndon is also employed as part of the Devs division. “[She’s] probably one of the youngest, if not the youngest, there,” said Spaeny. “Very committed to this world. It basically is her life.”

Asked if there’s any internal rivalry among the Devs staff, Pill replied, “Rivalry doesn’t really come into it. No. I mean, I think the project itself is so thrilling to smart people that anybody is happy to be working there and contributing to the project. It’s not about the money; it’s not about fame and fortune and whatever. It’s about the actual work.”

Garland was intrigued with the suggestion of internal rivalry within the Devs division. “It never occurred to me – it never occurred to us – but actually often there is rivalry,” said Garland. “But it’s in the nature of what they’re working with that’s so strange, that all thoughts that you might have or motivations are totally channeled into, ‘Can you achieve this or not?’”

“And what achievement of it means,” added Pill.

Pill revealed one of the more fascinating aspects of the series is that it questions what is morality. “If nothing you do is actually your choice, what does that mean? Does it provide a blanket to do whatever you want because you were always going to do it anyway? Just the nature of it is really mind-bending.”

‘No Time to Die’ New Posters and Behind the Scenes Video

MGM just released a new minute and a half behind the scenes video from No Time to Die featuring commentary by writer/director Cary Joji Fukunaga (Beast of No Nation, True Detective). Fukunaga kicks off the video by discussing the iconic Bond opening. “The white dots on the screen, the adrenaline started pumping, and then Bond turning towards the barrel and firing…when that comes on screen it’s like settle in and get ready for a ride.”

“For me as a writer and a director it was essential to rediscover Bond. Where is he? After five years of retirement, who has he become?” explained Fukunaga. “He’s sort of a wounded animal struggling with his role as a 00. The world’s changed. The rules of engagement aren’t what they used to be. The rules of espionage are darker in this era of asymetic warfare.”

“The people close to Bond – those he considers to be family – are at great risk. And now there’s someone new out there more dangerous than anyone he’s ever encountered. And whoever they are is smarter and stronger than SPECTRE,” revealed Fukunaga.

No Time to Die starring Daniel Craig as the suave superspy opens in theaters on April 10, 2020. Also starring are Ralph Fiennes as M, Naomie Harris as Eve Moneypenny, Rory Kinnear as Tanner, Léa Seydoux as Madeleine Swann, Ben Whishaw as Q, and Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter. The cast also includes Rami Malek, Lashana Lynch, Billy Magnussen, Ana de Armas, David Dencik, Christoph Waltz, and Dali Benssalah.

Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge co-wrote the screenplay with Fukunaga. Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli served as producers.

The Plot, Courtesy of MGM:

In No Time To Die, Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.

Roswell, New Mexico: Tyler Blackburn Talks Season 2 and Alex’s Relationships

The CW’s Roswell, New Mexico star Tyler Blackburn says we’ll see a more aggressive, take-charge Alex Manes when the series returns for its second season. During our interview at the New York Comic Con, Blackburn also teased that Alex’s relationship with Michael Guerin (played by Michael Vlamis) will remain…well…complicated in the upcoming season.

Roswell, New Mexico returns to The CW’s primetime lineup on Monday, March 16, 2020 at 9pm ET/PT.

Where do we pick up with Alex in the second season?

Tyler Blackburn: “When we pick up, basically Alex has been thinking about getting out of the Air Force for a while. I think that he kind of second guesses whether or not he should. I think that he’s sitting on a lot of information that only somebody in the government can have and realizes that he kind of needs to stay in there if he wants to access that information. So, he’s kind of questioning his decision that he was starting to make at the end of the first season.

But, also his relationship with Michael is a little bit fractured. He is realizing that he’s been playing with his heart a lot, so Michael Guerin’s not extremely interested in playing his games anymore. He’s realizing that he might have to put his own foot in his mouth and deal with the repercussions because Guerin’s sort of moved on from him, emotionally. Which is hard for him.

His father and him still have a contentious dynamic. His father is a little bit under his thumb because he is injured and in the hospital. He’s on a lot of meds. (Laughing) So, his relationship with his dad is kind of a power dynamic shift. It’s interesting. There’s actually a lot that happens in the first episode.”

Are there any new relationships you didn’t get to play with in the first season that you get to explore in the second?

Tyler Blackburn: “Well, it’s actually funny because Guerin and Alex…they’re together a lot this season but they’re just trying to be platonic and kind of start over. Start over to a point where they realize, ‘How do we get along? What is our relationship?’ So, he and Guerin are together a lot.

So, nothing like super new, to be honest. No relationships – other than Alex’s new love interest this season. That happens, I think, episode four you meet his new love interest. We’re actually still diving into that and working on that relationship, so it’s interesting. But in the first four episodes it’s kind of like he and Guerin trying to figure out certain aspects to the history of Roswell and Guerin’s family.”

What have been some of your favorite moments or scenes from season two?

Tyler Blackburn: “Oh man, this is one of those questions where it’s hard because I can’t really say. It’s usually one of those that has like the most weight to them. I have to be careful. I would say there is a scene between Alex and Guerin where Alex realizes that not only has he been playing with his heart on a romantic level, but the history of the Manes family goes back generations and the Manes family has really been the demise of the alien race. You know, Guerin’s mother and stuff. So, Alex is realizing he also symbolizes a lot of pain for Guerin. He has to make a decision that’s not necessarily easy for him.

It’s a pretty quick scene, but it’s very weighted.”

Do we get to learn more about Alex’s backstory this season?

Tyler Blackburn: “We’re just starting to get into that this season. One thing that I’m eager to dip into is his time in the Air Force. I don’t know that there’s a plan for that this season, but you do see more flashbacks of him in high school – so before the Air Force. And, yeah, there’s a little bit.

But I think what he’s dealing with now is how do I evolve from this point forward? Now that I’ve stood my ground, now that I kind of run the show, how do I move forward from that point and sort of bring a little bit of who he was in high school? You know, like who he truly is. How do I get him to come out? I don’t need to always be this tough guy from the Air Force who’s resentful because I grew up with an abusive father and I lost my leg. He’s like, ‘How do I take this and use this to my advantage?’

I think in a way he kind of goes to the other end of the spectrum where he starts off the series kind of in a shell and this season he’s really coming out of his shell. He’s starting a lot of fights. He’s really becoming a bit aggressive, I would say.”

Did you see that change coming?

Tyler Blackburn: “I talked to Carina (Adly MacKenzie) about that a little bit, yeah. Because it’s like where does somebody go who suddenly feels fortified in themselves? How do they then evolve? You know what I mean? And I think sometimes that does happen where we kind of get too big for our britches and we’re like, ‘Oh, since I did this, this, and this, now I can really go all out.’ And then you realize, ‘Oh, I’m actually hurting people,’ and you have to reel that in a little bit.

That’s been fun to play with. I also love the gay man who’s like the one who’s (aggressive)! I love that, you know? He literally beats people up this season.”

Were you told what Alex’s arc was going to be when you took on the role or are you learning as it goes on?

Tyler Blackburn: “Carina has given us some information. Obviously, it’s hard because you don’t ever know how long the show’s going to go. She has a plan for all six seasons…or five seasons, I think she has. So, she told me her ideas and some things are unfolding that way and some things are not.

It’s helpful to keep us on our toes though because then every script we get it’s like, ‘Oh, okay. Why is he doing this? How do I play this?’

I feel like I knew enough going into it where I was like I like this guy and I can see a lot happening with him.”
