‘Dopesick’ Trailer: Michael Keaton and Rosario Dawson Take on Big Pharma

Hulu has released a riveting first trailer for the limited series Dopesick based on Beth Macy’s bestselling book. Oscar nominee Michael Keaton (Birdman) stars as a doctor who questions a pharmaceutical rep’s claims about his company’s miracle drug, OxyContin, yet prescribes it to his patients anyway with deadly results. Rosario Dawson plays a DEA agent who fights to stop the use of the highly addictive opioid.

The eight-episode limited series also stars Peter Sarsgaard, Michael Stuhlbarg, Will Poulter, John Hoogenakker, and Kaitlyn Dever. Phillipa Soo and Jake McDorman guest star.

Emmy Award-winner Danny Strong (Game Change) adapted Macy’s book for the series and Oscar winner Barry Levinson (Rain Man) directs. Danny Strong, Michael Keaton, Barry Levinson, author Beth Macy, John Goldwyn, Warren Littlefield, and Karen Rosenfelt executive produce.

Hulu has set a Wednesday, October 13, 2021 premiere date.

The Plot, Courtesy of Hulu:

Dopesick, an ambitious, harrowing, and compelling look into the epicenter of America’s struggle with Opioid addiction, takes viewers from a distressed Virginia mining community, to the hallways of the DEA, and to the opulence of ‘one percenter.’ Big Pharma Manhattan. The unsparing yet deeply human portraits of the various affected families and their intersecting stories hold up a mirror to where America is right now, while shining a hopeful light on the heroes battling the worst drug epidemic in American history.

After 13 years, Michael Keaton returns to television as Samuel Finnix, an old-school doctor who approaches his practice with kindness and compassion, but finds himself embroiled in Big Pharma’s deadly secret.

‘The Great’ Season 2 Teaser Reveals November Premiere Date

Hulu’s 40 second teaser for the upcoming second season of The Great reveals Catherine (Elle Fanning) and Peter (Nicholas Hoult) are digging in their heels and continuing to fight over the Russian throne. Peter believes Catherine can’t possibly rule Russia without spelling a lot of blood, while Catherine’s equally positive it’s the love of the Russian people that will ultimately turn the tide her way.

The teaser confirms we’ll finally get to catch up with the Russian royals in The Great season two beginning Friday, November 19, 2021.

In addition to Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, the season two cast includes Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, and Gwilym Lee. Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Bayo Gbadamosi, and Belinda Bromilow also star.

Gillian Anderson (The Crown, The X-Files) guest stars as Catherine’s mom.

Oscar nominee Tony McNamara (The Favourite) created the series and serves as writer and executive producer. Additional executive producers include Marian Macgowan, Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Mark Winemaker, Matt Shakman, Thruline’s Josh Kesselman and Ron West, and Echo Lake’s Brittany Kahan Ward, Doug Mankoff, and Andrew Spaulding.

The Season 2 Plot, Courtesy of Hulu:

In season two of The Great, Catherine finally takes the Russian throne for her own—but if she thought coup-ing her husband was difficult, it’s nothing compared to the realities of liberating a country that doesn’t want to be. She’ll battle her court, her team, even her own mother (played by guest star Gillian Anderson) in a bid to bring the Enlightenment to Russia.

Meanwhile, she’ll also battle her heart as Peter slowly transitions from a much-hated husband to a prisoner? Ally? Lover? Ultimately, Catherine will learn that to change a country, you must let it change you, that there is a fine line between idealism and delusion, and that becoming “Great” will ask more of her than she could have imagined.

SundanceTV Adds More True Crime Programming to Its Lineup

True Crime Stories Hilarie Burton Morgan

SundanceTV has announced the addition of a new true crime franchise, providing details on the first two series that will fall under the newly created “True Crime Story” banner. New York Times bestselling author Hilary Burton Morgan (The Rural Diaries) is set to host It Couldn’t Happen Here and Jena Friedman (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) hosts Indefensible.

“Some of the most memorable programs on SundanceTV in recent years have focused on true crime stories, as we’ve built the category into an important part of the network’s brand,” stated Blake Callaway, general manager of SundanceTV, IFC and BBC America. “Working with Hilarie Burton Morgan and Jena Friedman to bring their talents and points of view to this new franchise is an exciting next step. We can’t wait to share these two new series that will offer a unique take on the genre this fall.”

It Couldn’t Happen Here will premiere on September 9, 2021 on SundanceTV and AMC+. Indefensible debuts on October 14th.

“Advocating for small towns has been the primary focus of my adult life, whether it’s fighting for mom and pop shops, or public schools or facilities like Astor Services,” said Burton Morgan. “I believe deeply in the value of these small communities. Last year, my husband and I were able to team with the AMC family to shed light on a number of the struggles our community was facing during Covid, as we had local friends and neighbors from the Hudson Valley on as guests for our show Friday Night In with the Morgans. Continuing my relationship with the AMC family at SundanceTV and digging deeper into the issues that are specific to small towns is a mission that I’m honored to be part of.”

Jena Friedman added, “Many Americans don’t think about our criminal justice system until they’re in it. I hope this show gives viewers insight into some of the ways in which the system is flawed, so at the very least, they’ll be a little more prepared in the event they ever end up on a jury.”

SundanceTV released the follow descriptions of the new series:

“In six, one-hour episodes, It Couldn’t Happen Here will put a spotlight on fascinating small-town American crime stories that demonstrate how crime impacts these tight-knit communities in unique and surprising ways. In six, 30-minute episodes, Indefensible looks into cases where the outcome is shaped by more than what initially meets the eye, and in the process brings something new and entirely unexpected to the genre.

In It Couldn’t Happen Here, life-long small-town community member and advocate Hilarie Burton Morgan visits different small towns in an effort to shine a much-needed light on the unique ways in which crime impacts rural communities and their judicial systems. Too often the heartbreaking events in these towns are largely overlooked because they lack the national media platforms and advocacy resources found in larger cities. In each episode, Hilarie hears the facts of the case from family members and local insiders in an attempt to understand the challenges the community faced investigating the crime, learn the lasting impact the crime has had on the fabric of the town, and ultimately call attention to where justice currently stands. Hilarie embraces these communities, where many know not just the victims, but the perpetrators and those who enable them.

In Indefensible, Jena Friedman travels the country to unspool real cases on the ground, but unlike most true crime shows, this one doesn’t end when the criminal gets locked up. Jena finds there’s always more to the story and drives to a different outcome beyond the simple whodunnit. Using her unflinching comedic point of view and disarming interview skills, Jena uncovers the ‘why’ and ‘how’ not only of crimes themselves, but of our sometimes dysfunctional criminal justice system.”

Cold Case Files Description, Courtesy of A&E Network:

There are over 100,000 cold cases in America, and only about 1% are ever solved. With recent advancements in technology and the methods used to solve these cases, as well as the unwavering dedication of victims’ families, law enforcement and the public, Cold Case Files explores the cases the defied the odds. Narrated by the original host and producer of Cold Case Files, celebrated veteran journalist and newsman Bill Kurtis, each one-hour episode of the Emmy-nominated series examines the twists and turns of one murder case that remained unsolved for years, and the critical element that heated it up, leading to the evidence that finally solved it.

Featuring interviews with family members, friends, detectives, and others close to the cases, the refreshed classic series examines all facets of the crime and shines a light on a range of voices and victims.

American Justice Details:

Narrated by actor Dennis Haysbert (Lucifer) the newly reimagined and iconic American Justice looks at recent criminal cases in the United States through the prism of the criminal justice system, and from the first-hand perspectives of the prosecutors, defense attorneys, investigators, victims and perpetrators involved. The series dives into significant crimes that were adjudicated within the last few years, from trials that made national headlines to gripping lesser-known cases, ensuring that the issues being explored are relevant.

Each story reveals how our justice system works, and, sometimes, how it doesn’t.
