‘Nomadland’ Debuts a Short Teaser Trailer with Frances McDormand

The nearly one-minute teaser trailer for Nomadland is simple but effective. Frances McDormand, the queen of understated performances, walks from the right side of the frame to the left, strolling through a campground with the setting sun as a backdrop. Nothing really happens, yet the teaser somehow manages to bring you into McDormand’s world.

Nomadland is based on Jessica Bruder’s 2017 non-fiction book, Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century. Oscar-winner McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) and Peter Spears (Call Me by Your Name) picked up the book’s rights and critically acclaimed writer/director Chloé Zhao (Songs My Brothers Taught Me, The Rider) adapted Bruder’s work for the screen.

“The American road fascinates me,” explained Zhao. “It’s heartbreakingly beautiful and deeply complicated. I’ve traveled it for many years and always hoped to capture a glimpse of it. I’m thankful to be able to make Nomadland and excited for audiences to join Fern on her adventure.”

McDormand, Spears, Zhao, Mollye Asher, and Dan Janvey produced.

Searchlight Pictures is targeting a December 4, 2020 theatrical release. Prior to its release in theaters, Nomadland will screen as part of the Venice, Toronto, Telluride, and New York Film Festivals.

Per Searchlight Pictures, Nomadland “will World Premiere with simultaneous screenings on September 11th at the 77th Venice International Film Festival and the 45th Toronto International Film Festival, both of which will feature virtual introductions by producer, writer, editor, and director Zhao, and producer and actor Frances McDormand. Telluride, which canceled its 47th edition due to the global pandemic, will host a special ‘Telluride from Los Angeles’ drive-in screening in Southern California later in the evening, featuring in-person appearances by Zhao and McDormand. Additionally, the New York Film Festival announced Nomadland as the Centerpiece Selection of the 58th edition of the festival.”

The Plot:

Following the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, Fern (McDormand) packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. The third feature film from director Chloé Zhao, Nomadland features real nomads Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells as Fern’s mentors and comrades in her exploration through the vast landscape of the American West.

BTS and “Dynamite” Set Another Billboard Hot 100 Record

BTS Dynamite

K-pop stars BTS continues to make history as their mega-hit “Dynamite” spent a second consecutive week at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. The group recently made history when they became the first all Korean act to hit number one on that same chart. By extending their reign in the top spot, they’ve made history once again.

“Dynamite” retained its number one position on this week’s Hot 100 chart with 17.5 million U.S. streams and 182,000 downloads sold over the week ending September 3, 2020, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. “Of the 43 songs that have entered the Hot 100 at No. 1 all-time, ‘Dynamite’ is the 20th to have remained on top in its second week,” reports Billboard.

The song also spent its second week at number one on the Digital Song Sales chart. Of note, its second-week sales are greater than the biggest sales week for any other song released this year.

The group took to Twitter to share the good news, posting a video in which they excitedly screamed while thanking fans. (The hashtag translates to “OurArmyReceivedAnAward.)

No strangers to shattering records, BTS’ music video for “Dynamite” broke the record for the most viewed music video in 24 hours on YouTube with a staggering 101.1 million views and garnering over three million peak concurrent viewers immediately upon release. Earlier this year, BTS achieved their fourth number one album on Billboard 200 charts with Map of THE Soul: 7 – something they accomplished in less than two years. BTS moved past The Beatles who had held that record for 22 years.

The supergroup will start their next round of promotions in a matter of days. Up first is The Today Show on September 10th where they’re scheduled to perform “Dynamite” at 8am ET/PT. They’ll follow that up with a performance on NBC’s American’s Got Talent on September 16th at 8pm ET/PT and the iHeartRadio Music Festival taking place September 18th & 19th.

BTS has been hinting their next album will be coming out in the second half of 2020. No word yet on the exact release date, however they have been promising fans “they won’t be disappointed.”

‘Ratched’ Final Trailer Reveals More of the Iconic Character’s Backstory

The opening moments of the final trailer for Netflix’s Ratched find the titular character revealing she was taken from her parents as a young child and lied to with a promise she’d see them again. The three-minute trailer explores how Mildred Ratched (played by Sarah Paulson) evolved into the evil nurse introduced in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, teasing her life could have been different if only someone had shown her a little mercy as a child.

The official trailer also shows the birth of the lobotomy, that procedure’s horrifying effects on patients, and the series’ twisted relationships.

Discussing her take on Nurse Mildred Ratched, Paulson stated, “In the story as it’s told in the film, there was so much to love about Jack Nicholson and all of the men in that ward. You wanted to spend time with them, you root for them, you want them to thrive, and she kept showing up and to the audience’s eye, impedes their opportunity for joy. I believe now that what she was ultimately doing was trying her damnedest to provide them with some help. She may have been limited in her thinking and adhering too stringently to the rules of that hospital, but she was trying to do what she believed to be right. It lacked humanity and that’s a really hard thing to watch, particularly when you have come to love those characters she’s in charge of.

It was interesting to keep all that in my mind – who she becomes down the road. As our story predates the movie by many many years, it turns out that in our story, she’s capable of far more than you might’ve imagined.”

In addition to Sarah Paulson, the cast includes Cynthia Nixon as Gwendolyn Briggs, Judy Davis as Nurse Betsy Bucket, Sharon Stone as Lenore Osgood, Jon Jon Briones as Dr. Richard Hanover, and Finn Wittrock as Edmund Tolleson. Charlie Carver plays Huck, Alice Englert is Dolly, Amanda Plummer is Louise, Corey Stoll is Charles Wainwright, Sophie Okonedo plays Charlotte Wells, Brandon Flynn is Henry Osgood, and Vincent D’Onofrio is Gov. George Wilburn.

Ratched was created by Evan Romansky and is executive produced by Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, Sarah Paulson, Alexis Martin Woodall, Aleen Keshishian, Jacob Epstein, Jennifer Salt, Margaret Riley, Michael Douglas, Robert Mitas, and Tim Minear. Murphy, Brennan, Salt, and Romansky wrote the one-hour drama.

Ryan Murphy directed episodes one and two, Nelson Cragg directed episode three, and Michael Uppendahl directed episodes four and five. Episode six was directed by Jessica Yu, episode seven was directed by Jennifer Lynch, and Dan Minahan directed the season finale.

Netflix has set a September 18, 2020 premiere date for the eight-episode dramatic series.

The Ratched Plot, Courtesy of Netflix:

Ratched is a suspenseful drama series that tells the origin story of asylum nurse Mildred Ratched. In 1947, Mildred arrives in Northern California to seek employment at a leading psychiatric hospital where new and unsettling experiments have begun on the human mind. On a clandestine mission, Mildred presents herself as the perfect image of what a dedicated nurse should be, but the wheels are always turning and as she begins to infiltrate the mental health care system and those within it, Mildred’s stylish exterior belies a growing darkness that has long been smoldering within, revealing that true monsters are made, not born.”
