‘Fear Street Part 1: 1994’ Trailer: Murder and Mayhem at the Mall

Netflix just dropped a new trailer in support of the upcoming premiere of Fear Street Part 1: 1994. The Fear Street trilogy is based R.L. Stine’s best-selling horror series and will kick off with Part 1 arriving on Friday, July 2, 2021.

Fear Street Part 2: 1978 premieres on July 9th and Fear Street Part 3: 1666 debuts on July 16th.

“As a filmmaker making Fear Street, but also just as a movie lover, I was so excited to pay homage to some of the great eras of horror movies. For 1994, Scream stood above all rest — it’s peak ’90s horror and, I think, one of the most brilliant movies ever made, period. Then for 1978, I got to look at the heyday of slasher films — Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street. For 1666…I found the best inspiration for me lay in the beautiful world made rotten of Terence Malick’s The New World,” said Fear Street trilogy director Leigh Janiak.

Producers include Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, David Ready, and Kori Adelson (on 1666). Adelson is an executive producer on 1994 and 1978. Director Leigh Janiak, Timothy M. Bourne, Yvonne M. Bernard, Joan Waricha, and Jane Stine also executive produce.

FEAR STREET PART 1: 1994 – A circle of teenage friends accidentally encounter the ancient evil responsible for a series of brutal murders that have plagued their town for over 300 years. Welcome to Shadyside.

HBO Max’s ‘Made for Love’ is Renewed for Season 2

Made for Love

The critically acclaimed comedy Made for Love will be returning for a second season. HBO Max just made it official, announcing the series based on Alissa Nutting’s novel has been renewed for season two.

The season one cast was led by Cristin Milioti and Billy Magnussen. Season one also starred Ray Romano, Dan Bakkedahl, Noma Dumezweni, Augusto Aguilera, and Caleb Foote. Executive producer Christina Lee is back as showrunner, with executive producer/author Alissa Nutting joining her as a co-showrunner for season two.

“We’re thrilled we get the chance to work with our incredible cast and crew again. We would’ve announced the pick-up earlier, but it was a beast closing Diane’s deal. Everyone thinks she’s a doll but she’s a real hard-ass,” said Lee and Nutting. (For those who haven’t caught season one, Diane is, literally, a doll.)

Patrick Somerville, Dean Bakopoulos, Liza Chasin, and SJ Clarkson executive produced the first season. Stephanie Laing directed six episodes, including the pilot and season finale. The half-hour comedy is a Paramount Television Studios production.

Made for Love is funny, dark, and entirely unique,” stated Suzanna Makkos, EVP, Original Comedy and Adult Animation, HBO Max. “We are thrilled to be reuniting with this dream team of talented producers, incredible cast, and CGI dolphins to tell the next chapter of this exciting story.”

The Plot, Courtesy of HBO Max:

Made for Love is a cynically poignant story of love and divorce following Hazel Green (Milioti), a thirty-something woman on the run after ten years in a suffocating marriage to Byron Gogol (Magnussen), a controlling tech billionaire. Soon she discovers that her husband has implanted a monitoring device – the Made for Love chip – in her brain, allowing him to track her, watch her, and know her “emotional data” as she tries to regain her independence.

Through the chip, Byron’s able to watch Hazel’s every move as she flees to her desert hometown to take refuge with her aging widower father Herbert (Ray Romano) and his synthetic partner, Diane.

‘Fin’ Documentary Trailer: Eli Roth Calls This His Scariest Film

discovery+ recently picked up Eli Roth’s shark documentary, Fin, and just released the official trailer. The streaming service plans to debut the film written, directed, and executive produced by Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel) on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 during Shark Week.

Fin‘s a Lionsgate and Pilgrim Media Group production in association with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Away productions. Executive producers include Leonardo DiCaprio, Nina Dobrev, President of Lionsgate Nonfiction Television and Pilgrim CEO and Chair Craig Piligian, Mike Nichols, Eddie Rohwedder, Michael Muller, Jennifer Davisson, and Phillip Watson. Mohamed El Manasterly serves as a producer along with Pilgrim’s Gretchen Stockdale and Nicholas Caprio.

Fin is the scariest film I’ve ever made, and certainly the most dangerous, but I wanted to send a message of hope to end this needless massacre of sharks. They keep our oceans clean to produce half our oxygen, and they deserve our respect and deserve to be saved, especially now when the shark fin sales ban is going before the House,” stated Roth. “It’s an honor to be joined by Leonardo DiCaprio to bring it to discovery+ audiences, and I couldn’t have done this film without the incredible support of Lionsgate and the amazing team at Pilgrim. I wanted to show the crisis from all sides and paired with an action campaign we can make the change necessary to protect them.

Fifty years ago the world came together to save the whales, then we did it for dolphins, and recently for Orcas. It’s time to do the same for sharks, and time is running out.”

“Working with Eli and the group of experts on this documentary has been mind-blowing and immensely educational. For years, we’ve perceived sharks as monsters but what’s truly monstrous is what’s happening to these beautiful creatures,” said Piligian. “Eli’s care, hard work and research on this important cause is evident in the remarkable production value of the film and its riveting effect. It’s a passion project for all of us involved and discovery+ is the perfect home.”

Lisa Holme, Group SVP of Content and Commercial Strategy for Discovery, Inc, added, “Discovery is the undisputed leader in shark programming and we will extend that expertise into the streaming space this summer on discovery+, with must-see content for shark lovers and enthusiasts. Perhaps no project is more important and timely than Fin, as we bring awareness to the serious threats these beautiful fish are facing. Eli Roth put together a remarkable film with support from Leonardo DiCaprio and Nina Dobrev, and we are honored to share it with the world.”

discovery+ provided the following description of Fin:

In Fin, Roth and a professional group of scientists, researchers and activists sail around the globe to unveil the truth behind the death of millions of sharks, exposing the criminal enterprise that is impacting the extinction of the misunderstood creatures. Fin features work from photographer Michael Muller and the support of organizations such as Oceana, Sea Shepherd, and Wild Aid.”

‘Schmigadoon!’ Trailer: Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong Star in Musical Comedy Series

Apple TV+’s new trailer for Schmigadoon! features Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key stumbling into a small town whose occupants appear to be stuck in classic movie musical mode. The twosome appear to be trapped in this weird town, but Cecily Strong’s not worried. After all, as she points out, no one ever dies in a musical, right? Wrong!

Joining Strong and Key in season one are Alan Cumming, Kristin Chenoweth, Aaron Tveit, Dove Cameron, Ariana DeBose, Fred Armisen, Jaime Camil, Jane Krakowski, and Ann Harada. Martin Short shows up as a guest star.

The six-episode season premieres on Apple TV+ on Friday, July 16, 2021. Two episodes will be released on July 16th followed by new episodes on subsequent Fridays.

The musical comedy was created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, with Paul serving as showrunner. Paul also wrote the series’ original songs and Daurio is a writer and consulting producer. The Broadway Video and Universal Television production is executive produced by Barry Sonnenfeld, Lorne Michaels, and Andrew Singer. Cecily Strong is a producer.

Apple TV+ released the following description of the series:

“A parody of iconic Golden Age musicals, Schmigadoon! stars Strong and Key as a couple on a backpacking trip designed to reinvigorate their relationship who discover a magical town living in a 1940s musical. They then learn that they can’t leave until they find true love.”

A&E Announces 2 New Documentary Series on Serial Killers

Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer, The Green River Killer, and BTK are examined in A&E Network’s upcoming limited documenatary series, Invisible Monsters: Serial Killers in America. These serial killers committed horrific murders during the same time period, and the three-night event will examine the “intersecting paths of five of America’s most notorious killers.”

Invisible Monsters: Serial Killers in America will premiere on Sunday, August 15, 2021 at 9pm ET/PT. Stephanie Soechtig guides the limited docuseries as showrunner and executive producer. Category 6 Media’s Sharon Scott, Laura Fleury, and Kristy Sabat also executive produce along with A&E Network’s Elaine Frontain Bryant, Shelly Tatro, and Brad Abramson.

A&E is also launching I Survived a Serial Killer on August 18th at 9:30pm ET/PT. The new series tells the stories of people who have managed to survive encounters with serial killers. The series is a Law & Crime production with Dan Abrams, Rachel Stockman, and Mark Anstendig executive producing alongside A&E Network’s Elaine Frontain Bryant, Shelly Tatro, and Sean Gottlieb.

Invisible Monsters: Serial Killers in America Details, Courtesy of A&E Network:

Over six hours, Invisible Monsters: Serial Killers in America weaves the stories of five infamous serial killers – Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer, The Green River Killer and BTK – together into a single narrative exploring the perfect storm of what was happening in culture, communications, law enforcement, media, forensics, and technology that allowed them to proliferate and evade capture. Names that still strike fear into the hearts of many, these seemingly normal men developed disturbingly intimate and hands-on approaches to murder that were at odds with their soft-spoken public existence.

Most of our public understanding of the modern serial killer comes from the 20 years that all five men were active. We still struggle to reconcile the uncomfortable dichotomy of monsters hiding in plain sight. The stories of these killers and their victims will be told by those closest to them, including exclusive interviews with survivors, investigators, forensic psychologists, prosecutors, and victims’ family members.

I Survived a Serial Killer Plot:

In each 30-minute episode, I Survived a Serial Killer documents the harrowing, heroic stories of one or more survivors of the same serial killers. Told from the survivors’ point of view, the series highlights the strength and perseverance of regular people encountering and overcoming pure evil. Interviews with those closest to the cases will round out the stories of these unimaginable crimes.

Over the 12-episode series, viewers will hear from survivors of killers including Andrew Urdiales, Richard Beasley (AKA The Craigslist Killer), Angel Resendiz (AKA The Railway Killer), and David Parker Ray (AKA The Toy Box Killer.

Jon Krakauer’s Under the Banner of Heaven is set to become a limited series starring Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge). FX just ordered the series from Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black (Milk), with Black adapting Krakauer’s novel and executive producing.

Daisy Edgar-Jones (War of the Worlds) is also confirmed to star, and executive producer David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water) will direct. Gillian Berrie and Imagine Television’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Samie Kim Falvey, and Anna Culp also executive produce along with Aggregate Films’ Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan.

“Dustin Lance Black is a gifted storyteller and the perfect artist to adapt Jon Krakauer’s gripping novel for FX,” said Gina Balian, President, Original Programming, FX. “Lance joins an incredible creative team led by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard at Imagine Television who have been passionate about telling this story with him for years. We are thrilled that David Mackenzie has come aboard as a director and to have Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones star in Under the Banner of Heaven.”

“We at Imagine have been dedicated to telling this powerful story for nearly a decade. With FX’s belief and support and Lance Black’s relentless commitment we are, at last, on our way. We couldn’t be more excited to be collaborating with David Mackenzie, Andrew Garfield, and Daisy Edgar-Jones to bring this project to life,” said Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, jointly.

The FX Productions limited series will air on FX on Hulu.

“After so many years of work, I’m incredibly grateful to Imagine and FX for their patience with and commitment to bringing this story to screen,” said Dustin Lance Black. “Raised in the LDS faith, my hope is that this true-crime thriller might shed light on the horrific brutalities perpetrated in the name of God in our own backyards.”

The Plot, Courtesy of FX:

Inspired by the #1 New York Times bestseller Under the Banner of Heaven, a devout detective’s faith is tested as he investigates a brutal murder that seems to be connected to an esteemed Utah family’s spiral into LDS fundamentalism and their distrust in the government.

Andrew Garfield will star as “Pyre,” an LDS elder who is committed to his Church and family but begins to question some of the Church’s teachings through his contact with a suspected murderer.

Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as “Brenda,” a young faithful Mormon who is the victim of a brutal murder.

‘F9’ Review: Time to Stick a Fork in the Franchise

F9 Fast and Furious 9

A plane uses a gigantic magnet to snatch a car midair and a Pontiac Fiero orbits Earth in search of a satellite. The only action scene missing from F9 is the “family” literally jumping sharks at some point during the ridiculously lengthy and unnecessary 145-minute running time.

The wacky plot revolves around the hunt for a high-tech device that will allow a spoiled dictator’s son named Otto (Thue Ersted Rasmussen) to take control of nuclear missiles. His goal: world domination. And, of course, it’s not the CIA, the FBI, Interpol, or even trained ninjas who are called upon to stop him.

Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) sends out a secret message to the gang informing them they need to find his crashed plane and retrieve its cargo. Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges), and Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel) are tasked with delivering Mr. Nobody’s message to Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) who are holed up on a farm living a simple life and taking care of Dom’s son.

Letty’s immediately all in but Dom declines the invitation, insisting he needs to stay home and take care of his son. His desire to be a good dad who’s present in his son’s life sparks a series of flashbacks that intrude on current events at random moments throughout the film. We are finally privy to the Toretto family’s secrets, not that anyone was begging to be let in on what went down during Dom’s formative years.

Once Dom comes on board, more’s disclosed regarding Otto and his quest to take over the world. Part of his plan includes holding Cipher (Charlize Theron) in a glass cell à la Hannibal Lecter minus the mask.

It turns out Otto’s partner in crime just happens to be Dom’s estranged younger brother, Jakob, played by John Cena who bears no resemblance to Vin Diesel. Nine films in and we’re just now finding out about this mysterious younger sibling? And exactly how did the estranged Toretto brothers – along with sister Mia (Jordana Brewster) – wind up involved in the hunt for a high-tech device? Sheer coincidence, I suppose. Save your brain cells and don’t even try and figure out the odds.

The high-tech device consists of three separate elements – two halves and a key – that must be put together to activate the thing. The hunt for clues to the actual physical locations of the three parts sends the gang off on a globe-trotting adventure in which they encounter old friends/acquaintances including Sean (Lucas Black), Twinkie (Shad Moss), and Earl (Jason Tobin). Queenie (Helen Mirren) puts in a brief appearance to take Dom on a wild car ride and government agent Stasiak (Shea Whigham) returns for an even briefer, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it, scene involving the use of a plane.

The hunt leads to the discovery fan-favorite Han (Sung Kang) isn’t dead and instead has been in hiding just so that he can spring into action when his presence is most desperately needed. (And that would definitely qualify F9 as the right film for Han’s resurrection.)

No one watches a F&F film for its plot. Fans also don’t seem to care if the lead actors emerge victorious from brutal fistfights with muscular brutes who should be able to take them down in seconds. Who cares? No one. It’s all about the action and F9 does deliver some stunning sequences, including one gravity-defying scene involving a suspension bridge’s cable acting as a slingshot to deliver Dom safely to terra firma.

I love big, goofy action films as much as the next person. I’m also a fan of the first four Fast and Furious films. They didn’t need to make a lot of sense; they just needed to entertain. The franchise began by telling stories that were wild but not completely improbable. As the F&F franchise continues, each new entry further distances itself from the series’ humble beginnings.

The F&F saga has now reached the point where gigantic, powerful magnets that magically target only specific items the gang needs to move are not only incorporated into the story but are integral to much of the plot. Granted, the logic (and physics) defying magnets allow for cool action sequences. But, there’s a point where the fun factor vanishes and the ludicrousness of it all takes over.

F9 has it all…explosions, cool car chases, hand-to-hand fights, and all manner of insane stunts including rockets attached to a Fiero in orbit…so what’s left to conquer? There will be at least two more installments in the F&F saga but just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should go through with it.

Director Justin Lin returns to the franchise after helming The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, Fast Five, and Furious 6. Lin understands the “family” and the F&F audience. That said, other than when Tej and Roman provide some comic relief F9 seems to take itself far too seriously. Less Toretto backstory and fewer deep thought moments involving Vin Diesel would have gone a long way toward lightening the tone. The laughs should be intentional and given the audience’s reaction at the screening I attended, those more dramatic moments missed their marks.

F9’s not a disaster. However, it is proof that even action franchises have an expiration date.

GRADE: C-

MPAA Rating: PG-13 for language, action, sequences of violence
Release Date: June 25, 2021
Running Time: 2 hours 25 minutes
