‘Pray Away’ Trailer: New Documentary Examines the Harm Done by Conversion Therapy

Netflix just debuted the powerful official trailer for Pray Away, a new documentary that delves into the damage done by conversion therapy, with former conversion therapy leaders providing insight into the process. The documentary debuted at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival and currently sits at 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Hollywood Reporter calls the documentary “a sobering account of Christian intervention rooted in toxic homophobia” and Alliance of Women Film Journalists’ Sarah Ward says it’s “a poised, meticulous, wide-ranging but never flashy film.”

Netflix has set an August 3, 2021 premiere date.

Kristine Stolakis directs and produces, with Ryan Murphy and Jason Blum executive producing.

Pray Away Synopsis, Courtesy of Netflix:

In the 1970s, five men struggling with being gay in their Evangelical church started a Bible study to help each other leave the “homosexual lifestyle.” They quickly received over 25,000 letters from people asking for help and formalized as Exodus International, the largest and most controversial conversion therapy organization in the world. But leaders struggled with a secret: their own “same-sex attractions” never went away.

After years as Christian superstars in the religious right, many of these men and women have come out as LGBTQ, disavowing the very movement they helped start. Focusing on the dramatic journeys of former conversion therapy leaders, current members, and a survivor, Pray Away chronicles the “ex gay” movement’s rise to power, persistent influence, and the profound harm it causes.

Cedric the Entertainer (The Neighborhood) will make his Emmy Awards hosting debut with the upcoming ceremony set for September 19, 2021. The 2021 Emmys will be broadcast on CBS and will take place in front of a limited live audience after going virtual in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year’s awards show will be directed by Hamish Hamilton and executive produced by Emmy nominees Reginald Hudlin and Ian Stewart.

“Since I was a little boy huddled up next to my grandmother, television has always been my reliable friend, so it is an enormous honor for me to host this year’s Emmy Awards,” stated Cedric the Entertainer. “Throughout the roller-coaster of a year that we have all lived through, television has helped us stay connected as a society like never before. It not only entertained us, but as it always has, it helped to open our eyes, educate us, and hopefully brought about a better understanding of who we are as a people. I can’t wait to take the stage to celebrate all of the great shows and performances that made us laugh, cry, dance, and sing over the past year.”

The ceremony will be broadcast live on CBS beginning at 5pm ET/8pm PT. According to the network, this year’s Emmy Awards live audience will be limited to the nominees and their guests.

“We are honored that CBS and the Television Academy have given us the opportunity to produce our fourth Emmys running and, once again, celebrate television’s biggest night with a live audience,” said Ian Stewart, Executive Producer and President, Done+Dusted. “We are equally excited to ‘get the band back together,’ for the second time, with the mega-talented Reginald and his crew at Hudlin Entertainment.”

“I’m very excited to be returning to the Emmys,” added executive producer Reginald Hudlin. “Last year, the restrictions of Covid freed me and the awesome talents at Done+ Dusted to do a show that was different than any other award show. We don’t plan on repeating ourselves, but we certainly want to try some new ideas that could only be done on the Emmys.”

Nominations will be announced during a virtual event hosted on Emmys.com on Tuesday, July 13th at 8:30am PT.

‘The Witcher’ Season 2 Teaser Trailer and First-Look Photos Revealed During WitcherCon

Netflix and CDPR’s inaugural WitcherCon was packed with The Witcher goodies, including a two-minute season two teaser trailer. WitcherCon’s interactive panels featured the series’ stars Henry Cavill (“Geralt of Rivia”), Anya Chalotra (“Yennefer”), Freya Allan (“Ciri”), and Paul Bullion (“Lambert”) discussing what’s in store for the new season. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich also participated and dropped some hints on season two storylines.

“There are so many characters that we’re introducing in Season 2,” explained Schmidt Hissrich. “We are getting to see Dijkstra for the first time and sort of the Redanian Kingdoms. I know a lot of fans are excited to meet Philippa for the first time, Codringher and Fenn, Rience, Nenneke. There’s so many, but I would have to say Vesemir is the one I’m looking most forward to our audience meeting. Vesemir is so integral to the story that we’re telling this season.”

Schmidt Hissrich added, “Obviously, we’re returning to Kaer Morhen for the first time, and in a season that is about Geralt becoming a father to Ciri, it felt so important to meet who his father figure was. And you end up with this multigenerational story because Vesemir and Ciri have a story as well, and it does start to feel like, ‘Oh, all of these people are meant to be interacting and learning from each other and fighting with each other.'”

During the three-hour first-ever WitcherCon, series star Henry Cavill provided his take on Geralt of Rivia’s journey.

“I played the Season One way deliberately, which was him out in the wilds and without the opportunity for vast swathes of dialogue. I thought it best to be the man who says less because that seems like he’s thinking more. And that was the intention with that. But once you get into a scenario with Cirilla, and the Witchers and his home space and with those people who he already knows, I was of the opinion that you had to let him be verbose and be philosophical and speak more and be intellectual, because that’s what he is. He’s not just a big old white-haired brute.”

According to Schmidt Hissrich, the new season will continue to explore the relationship between Geralt and Ciri.

“At the end of Season 1, we have what I think is one of the sort of most emotional scenes that we’ve done, which is Geralt and Ciri finding each other after they’ve both been searching all season… And it seems like we’ve got a father figure and daughter figure, and everything’s going to be perfect at that point, except for they’ve never met. And so it was really fun to start Season 2 thinking about, well, they’re not a family yet. How do they grow to be one? What do you do if you are a person like Geralt, who has sworn he doesn’t need anyone in the world whatsoever? And then he’s presented with a girl who is now solely in his care,” offered Schmidt Hissrich. “And we have Ciri, who’s used to being under the care of people but has basically been running from everyone for an entire season and now being told that this person is going to take care of you. And so it was really fun to start Season 2 kind of them a little uncertain about how to be with each other, and they have to really grow into that. We wanted to make sure that felt like an authentic relationship, that they weren’t just bonded at the very beginning.”

Netflix’s WitcherCon event featured the release of The Witcher season two poster, new photos, and the announcement of the confirmed premiere date. Season two is set to premiere on December 17, 2021, two years after the release of season one.

The reveal of season two’s episode titles also dropped during WitcherCon. A one-minute video included episode logos and the titles “A Grain of Truth,” “Kaer Morhen,” “What is Lost,” “Redanian Intelligence,” “Turn Your Back,” “Dear Friend,” and “Voleth Meir.”

BTS Release “Permission to Dance” Single and Official Music Video

BTS dropped their latest single “Permission to Dance” at midnight on July 9, 2021 and within hours of the song’s music video debut it had racked up more than 55 million views on YouTube. “Permission to Dance” also took the number one spot on iTunes in more than 90 countries.

The single is a follow-up to their smash hit “Butter” which hit airwaves on May 21, 2020 and continues to dominate the charts, with the single sitting in the number one spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for six consecutive weeks. “Butter’s” reign marks the group’s longest run thus far in the chart’s number one spot. “Permission to Dance” might soon be on hot on its trail.

Described as belonging to the dance-pop genre, “Permission to Dance” is yet another fun, uplifting song for everyone across all demographics to enjoy, prompting listeners to bop their heads and bust some dance moves. British superstar and four-time Grammy award winner Ed Sheeran co-wrote the song with Steve Mac, Johnny McDaid, and Jenna Andrews, and Mac, Andrews, and Stephen Kirk produced.

Bighit Music offered this description of BTS’ new single: “The song spreads the message that you don’t need permission to dance to your heart’s content, dedicated to anyone who is having a bad day or is discouraged in the face of reality. Words of encouragement overflow upon a bouncy rhythm that gives energy to get up on your feet and dance again.”

“The performance sheds spotlight on BTS’ energetic charms,” stated the group’s label. “The dance moves are easy to emulate so that anyone can effortlessly dance along to the free-spirited yet familiar BTS style choreography.”

The music video’s release coincided with the release of the “Butter” single CD which includes “Permission to Dance.” There hasn’t been any official confirmation on if either “Butter” or “Permission to Dance” will be included on BTS’ upcoming album; there haven’t been any real updates on the next album.

BTS’ most recent album, BE, was released in November 2020 and produced two Billboard Hot 100 number ones: “Dynamite” and “Life Goes On.” The album also soared to number one on the Billboard 200 Albums chart.

The septet’s upcoming July 13th and 14th appearances on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon will include the U.S. television premiere performance of “Permission to Dance.”
