HBO’s critically acclaimed ’80s drama, The Deuce, will return for its third – and final – season on September 9, 2019. The series will wrap up with eight new episodes starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal and airing on Mondays at 9pm ET/PT.

George Pelecanos and David Simon created the series which examines the rise of the porn industry. Pelecanos, Simon, Nina K. Noble, and series star James Franco serve as executive producers.

Alex Hall, Susanna White, Tanya Hamilton, Roxann Dawson, and James Franco are among the season three directors. Writers include David Simon, George Pelecanos, Carl Capotorto, Iturri Sosa, Will Ralston, Chris Yakaitis, and Stephani DeLuca.

The Plot and Season 3 Details:

“Season three of The Deuce brings us into the world of 1985, just as VHS overtakes film as the primary medium for porn production and distribution. The lure of the California sunshine, the city’s aggressive takeover of commercial sex properties in Times Square and the devastating impact of the AIDS epidemic mark the end of an era.

With the party of the 1970s winding down, 42nd Street has deteriorated into a hive of uncontrolled violent crime and seedy video stores, making urban renewal seem more unlikely than ever before. Following the interconnected lives of Times Square’s barkeeps, prostitutes, pimps, police, mobsters, porn actors and producers, the eight-episode third season of The Deuce brings the series’ arc to a dramatic conclusion.”

Cast and Characters, Courtesy of HBO:

The drama series stars James Franco as both Vincent Martino – who, in season three, finds himself tired, wary and in search of a way out – and his twin Frankie Martino, a seemingly changed man, who is married with children and who continues to flirt with self-destruction; and Maggie Gyllenhaal as Candy, a director struggling to maintain her artistic integrity in an industry that is quickly devolving.

The returning cast also includes Margarita Levieva (Revenge), as Abby, the proprietor of the Hi-Hat and an advocate for Times Square’s artists and denizens who begins to consider life after the Deuce; Emily Meade (The Leftovers) as porn star Lori, now living in Los Angeles and battling addiction while absorbing the porn business’ migration to videotape and the resulting degradation, and Lawrence Gilliard, Jr. (The Wire) as Chris Alston, now detailed to the Midtown Enforcement Project and partnered with Gene Goldman (Luke Kirby) to realize the city’s plan to rehabilitate Midtown.

Chris Bauer (The Wire) is French Parlor manager Bobby who steadily begins to lose his piece of the lucrative Times Square sex trade; Chris Coy (Banshee) is gay businessman and entrepreneur Paul, who must confront the AIDS epidemic, and Michael Rispoli (The Sopranos) is mob capo Rudy, who leans on the Martino brothers for greater profit amidst infighting.

Season three finds familiar faces who return this season as cast regulars including, David Krumholtz (The Plot Against America) is veteran pornographer Harvey; Daniel Sauli (House of Cards) is Tommy Longo, who’s angling for his own position amidst the Gambino family; Olivia Luccardi (Channel Zero) is Melissa, now an amateur porn actress forced to confront her past, and Sepideh Moafi (Falling Water) is Loretta, a bartender at the Hi-Hat, involved in the feminist anti-porn movement.

Guests include Zoe Kazan (The Plot Against America), Mustafa Shakir (Jett), Roberta Colindrez (I Love Dick), Kim Director (She’s Gotta Have It), Corey Stoll (House of Cards), Aaron Dean Eisenberg (Public Morals), Michael Gandolfini (Ocean’s Eight), and Ralph Macchio (The Karate Kid).

Riverdale Season 4 Interview: KJ Apa on Archie’s Relationships and Post-High School Plans

Season four of The CW’s Riverdale will open with a tribute to Luke Perry and his character, Fred Andrews. The new season will also find Jughead attending a different school while Archie, played by KJ Apa, deals with life without his dad.

The cast of Riverdale was once again a huge draw at the San Diego Comic Con. In addition to handling questions from fans, KJ Apa talked about season four during our roundtable interview. He didn’t give away much in the way of spoilers (thankfully), but he did provide a little sneak peek into what’s in store.

Riverdale season four will premiere on October 9, 2019.

Tell us about Archie’s relationship with Veronica this season. And is Archie’s mom now the caregiver?

KJ Apa: “Yeah, both of them have a lot going on in their lives right now so they need each other more than ever. And I think, you know, in terms of just because they know each so well that both are so easy to approach in a time of need like that. Also, with Archie’s dad being absent this season we get to spend a lot more time with Archie and Mary which is a relationship we never really got to know quite well. So, yeah, it’s exciting.

I think me and Molly (Ringwald) have already had some amazing scenes together so far. It’s been getting good to know her more, getting to know how our characters interact with each other more. Because we never got to do that it still feels new, the relationship. But, yeah, there’s a lot of fun stuff. I think a lot of the stuff this season is relationship stuff, especially between the core four, figuring out things that we didn’t know beforehand.”

Riverdale star KJ Apa

What’s the relationship like now between Archie and the other members of the core four?

KJ Apa: “From the start of the season? I mean, because of Fred passing away, you know they’re all there for him and they’re really tight. But, yeah, everyone is solid. Everyone is solid right now.”

So how is it for Archie with Jughead going to another school?

KJ Apa: “It’ll be tough, it’ll be tough. I think it’s always hard when your best mate moves away. I think it’s going to be tough for everyone. I know it’s tough for Betty as well. And I think that also with him being gone and Archie spending more time with the girls I think also brings up more problematic issues that we might have to deal with.”

What is his mental state like during this time?

KJ Apa: “I mean, obviously not that great. Yeah, the first episode is a very real episode, I think, for all of us. We had to dig deep and, you know, it’s not easy but I think we did the right thing and Roberto wrote a script that really allowed us to appreciate what we were doing and feel it.”

Veronica and Betty are apparently working on their college applications in the new season. Do you have any indication what Archie hopes to be doing in the future or is he just kind of focused on getting by?

KJ Apa: “I don’t see him… Personally, I don’t see him going to college. I think Archie, he’s got his dad’s business. Yeah, I never really saw him going to college. And I think it’s also cool to…it’s also another thing to show the fans is like not everyone has to go to college, that there are other ways to live your life. You know, I didn’t go to college. I think people think you can only be successful if you do it the way that everyone does it, which is not true. So, I think that would be a good example for people to see that.”

Will there be much interaction between Archie and Cheryl this season?

KJ Apa: “With Cheryl? Oh geez, I don’t know. I hope not She’s a little drama. Cheryl’s all drama, man. Yeah, I’m tired of Cheryl’s drama. Give me a break for once.”

‘Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark’ Movie Review

Scary Stories to Tell at Night
Austin Zajur in ‘Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark’ (Photo credit: George Kraychyk)

“I’m afraid that we woke something up,” says Stella (Zoe Margaret Colletti) to her remaining friends after two teenagers – one of whom was her best friend – mysteriously disappear in the horror film, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

It’s October 31, 1968 and in the small town of Mill Valley, Stella and her two best/only friends – Auggie (Gabriel Rush) and Chuck (Austin Zajur) – set out to spend Halloween together. Running away from the town bully, Tommy (Austin Abrams), they meet Ramon (Michael Garza) who Stella instantly likes. She suggests they all go check out the local haunted house…because isn’t that what you always do with a new friend?

The house is an old boarded-up mansion owned by the family that helped found the town. While exploring the creepy and cobwebbed estate, Stella tells the group the story of the Bellows family and how they kept young Sarah Bellows locked up in a room and had her face removed from all the family portraits. Children would come to tease or try to get a glimpse of her, and Sarah would tell them scary stories through a wall. The legend is the children would soon disappear after listening to her creepy tales.

While exploring the mansion, Stella comes across the old book Sarah wrote her scary stories in. She secretly takes the book and later at home starts reading it. As she’s reading, she notices a new story being mysteriously written in blood about Tommy.

The following day she hears that Tommy has disappeared. Stella and her friends soon realize they’ve angered Sarah’s ghost. They also realize Sarah’s going to write a scary story for each of them that will lead to them disappearing forever.

Inspired by a collection of short horror stories, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark tries to be a creepy and suspenseful ghost story reminiscent of such films as Final Destination and ParaNorman but falls short on chills and scares. Instead of being an effective anthology film, the script’s written to link all the separate stories together by creating the Bellows family legend and focusing on a group of teenagers.

The cast of young newcomers fail to impress, with the exception of Zoe Margaret Colletti. Colletti delivers an effective performance as Stella, the young girl who’s a little obsessed with the Bellows legend until she realizes she and her friends are being targeted by a vengeful ghost. Colletti’s is the only notable performance in the film.

The biggest problem with the film are the scenes in which the teenagers are being stalked by an evil force (including a creepy scarecrow or a corpse looking for its toe). These scenes, although well-crafted, lack any real sense of dread, suspense, or terror.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark fails to effectively bring to the big screen the creepy and heart-pounding tales which have both entertained and terrified children.

‘Honey Boy’ Official Trailer: Shia LaBeouf Gets Real

Amazon Studios just released the official trailer for the drama, Honey Boy, based on the life of actor Shia LaBeouf. LaBeouf wrote the screenplay and stars in the film which is currently sitting at 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes following its debut at the Sundance Film Festival.

The two and a half minute trailer includes blurbs from critics who praise the film for its rawness and honesty. Leah Greenblatt wrote in her review for The Hollywood Reporter, “If Honey’s arc feels stamped in an certain kind of indie template, it still builds a sneaky kind of emotional capital.”

In addition to Shia LaBeouf, the cast of Honey Boy includes Lucas Hedges (Boy Erased, Manchester by the Sea), Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place), and FKA. Alma Har’el (Bombay Beach, LoveTrue) directed and Anita Gou, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Chris Leggett, and Daniela Taplin Lundberg produced.

Amazon Studios will release Honey Boy in theaters on November 8, 2019. The film’s been rated R for pervasive language, some sexual material and drug use.

The Honey Boy Plot:

“From a screenplay by Shia LaBeouf, based on his own experiences, award-winning filmmaker Alma Har’el brings to life a young actor’s stormy childhood and early adult years as he struggles to reconcile with his father and deal with his mental health.

Fictionalizing his ascent to stardom, and subsequent crash-landing into rehab and recovery, Har’el casts Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges as Otis Lort, navigating different stages in a frenetic career. LaBeouf takes on the therapeutic challenge of playing a version of his own father, an ex-rodeo clown and a felon. Dancer-singer FKA twigs makes her feature-film debut, playing neighbor and kindred spirit to the younger Otis in their garden-court motel home.

Har’el’s feature narrative debut is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between filmmaker and subject, exploring art as medicine and imagination as hope through the life and times of a talented, traumatized performer who dares to go in search of himself.”

Yellowstone Season 2 Episode 7 Recap: “Resurrection Day”

Yellowstone Season 2 Episode 7 Kelly Reilly
Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly in ‘Yellowstone’ season 2 episode 7 (Photo Credit: Paramount Network)

Paramount Network’s Yellowstone season two episode seven includes one of the most disturbing scenes on primetime television in recent history, so please be careful of any young ones watching the episode airing on August 7, 2019. That said, I challenge any Emmy voter to watch Kelly Reilly’s riveting, heartbreaking performance in “Resurrection Day” and not nominate her for an award.

Season two episode seven begins with Kayce (Luke Grimes) meeting up with his dad in the stables, wondering why John’s up so early. John (Kevin Costner) has a lot to think about and wants some alone time, but Kayce’s able to talk his way into joining John for a morning ride. Kayce reminds his dad his problems will still be there when he returns.

They stop after a while, arriving at the spot where Kayce’s mom died. John admits he was a better man and father when she was with him and hopes Kayce never experiences that feeling. Kayce confesses he already knows what it feels like. It’s a sweet yet melancholy moment the two share.

Back at the big house, Jamie (Wes Bentley) vigorously scrubs his face while weeping. Beth (Kelly Reilly) catches him and stares at his back. She finally says, “I blame myself, to a degree.” She then analyzes her brother having figured out he’s consumed with how the world views him.

“Morality, loyalty…not part of the equation for you. But you’ve finally done something that makes you see yourself the way the world does,” says Beth in a quiet, restrained manner. She then adds, “The way I see you – the way he sees you. And no amount of scrubbing is going to change that.”

As she’s walking away, Beth suggests he kill himself.

Elsewhere, the Reservation police bring Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) out to a house where a murder has just occurred. The victim was involved with the casino and his manner of death is disturbing. He was found strangled with his hand cut off. The severed hand was left outside with a knife sticking straight up out of it. Thomas acknowledges the message is received.

Tate hangs out with Rip (Cole Hauser) as Rip works a horse. Tate was left behind when John and Kayce went for a ride, and Rip’s surprisingly patient while watching over him.

Kayce and John arrive back at the ranch and Rip suggests they add babysitting to his list of talents. Tate has a talk with his grandfather, as Kayce thanks Rip for watching over him.

Tate tells John he’s going to be a cowboy when he grows up, but he needs a horse. He can’t be a cowboy without one. He asks John to buy him one and volunteers to take care of the barn to pay him back. He also agrees he’ll feed and water the horse. John tells him if Kayce says yes, then he’ll get him one.

Meanwhile, Teal Beck (Terry Serpico) shows up at Dan Jenkins’ restaurant with a notice that he’s suspended Dan’s liquor license. He won’t get it back until the following spring, and the cops accompanying Teal confiscate all the alcohol on the premises.

Teal’s brother, Malcolm (Neal McDonough), puts in an appearance at Beth’s office. He reveals he knows she’s buying up lots of land and that he thinks her father isn’t a reasonable man. He acknowledges he respects that about John and admits he’s not reasonable either.

Malcolm warns Beth he won’t allow a casino to be built at the gates of Yellowstone. Beth suggests he return to Billings and let them handle it, but Malcolm doesn’t trust they can do that. Malcolm says John’s going to need a new revenue stream once property taxes rise, and Beth assures him she’s taking care of it.

Malcolm’s not done talking. He believes Beth realizes the casino will need electricity and that they’ll get it from placing a dam on the Duttons’ river. That should provide the Duttons with an excellent source of revenue.

Malcolm recalls the story of a real estate attorney who placed her own needs over his. When he fought back, she was unable to turn to the authorities because it would have exposed her wrongdoing in the process. She ended up forced to move to California. He then threatens Beth by saying she looks a lot like that attorney.

Beth has a story of her own. She recalls as a rebellious teenager she gave a skinny boy no one liked a hand job in church. “It’s uncanny how much you look like that boy’s d*ck,” says Beth.

Malcolm warns her he’s got the cure for her tough talk. Beth accepts his challenge.

Tate’s working hard on convincing his father he needs a horse. They’re in Kayce’s truck and Tate ticks off a list of things he’ll do to take care of his horse. He’ll even learn how to braid its hair, if his dad will let him have a horse. “I’ll even clean out his poop,” says Tate as Kayce just smiles.

They arrive at the front door of Monica’s new apartment and Kayce finally gives in. However, Kayce will take care of it during the week and Tate can do it on weekends. That doesn’t sit well with Tate. John told him he needed to feed it every day, so Tate thinks he needs to live on the ranch. Kayce tries to get Tate to be quiet so Monica doesn’t hear that kind of talk, but she does and, strangely, she agrees.

Once inside the apartment Kayce notices Monica’s bags are all packed. She confesses she can’t move on from him and that he’s a part of her soul. She asks for his forgiveness and Kayce rushes to her as Tate tells them kissing is gross.

At the ranch, John walks by his gun cabinet and notices a rifle is missing. He runs outside and grabs Rip and they take off on horses to track down Jamie. They’re coming up empty in their search when John asks Rip how much of “it” he did. Rip refuses to provide the details, unwilling to make John an accessory.

Rip finally admits he only helped in the clean-up. Neither man believes this will ever go away.

As they’re talking Rip spots Jamie. John goes after him on his own. Jamie’s cradling the rifle as John rides up, quietly and calmly approaching his son. John says that if he commits suicide it will be all anyone remembers about him. John’s angry, calling suicide a selfish act.

“This cannot be fixed. I cannot be fixed,” cries Jamie. “I’m married to it.”

John recalls his dad’s advice and admits he never should have sent Jamie off to school. He asks for the rifle and Jamie hands it over, breathing deeply. John helps him to his feet and tells his son they’ll work together on the new Jamie.

That evening John asks Beth to take it easy on Jamie. She can’t – or won’t – and claims Jamie’s the one they need to fight the hardest in order to save the family. She thinks John can’t see that, but she’s sure she’s right.

When John confirms Jamie was going to kill himself, Beth assures her dad she can get him to actually go through with it. John doesn’t want that to happen, but he can’t say that he loves Jamie when Beth asks him to look her in the eye and say it out loud.

That evening, Jamie packs up his belongings at Rip’s suggestion and moves into the bunkhouse. Rip tells the wranglers Jamie’s going to try his hand at being a cowboy. He leads Jamie to a bunk and then gets him involved in a poker game with the guys.

Jamie folds a winning hand, understanding what he needs to do to fit in.

John and Beth have a slightly more relaxed discussion about alcohol, Tequila, and worms. She lets her dad know Malcolm Beck paid her a visit and that men like him want to be feared. He won’t get that, but he’ll try.

Monica moves into the foreman’s house with Tate and Kayce. Relaxed and reunited, they stare into each other’s eyes as they make love.

Jamie continues with his poker game as Beth rings up Rip and demands he come to her. He climbs the house and joins Beth on the roof, sipping whiskey and staring at the stars. She wants him to take her on a real date, but Rip doesn’t believe her. He’s too tired to figure out what she really wants, but she swears she truly wants a real date.

She wonders what he spends his paychecks on and after making light of the question, she wants the real answer. Rip says he spent $22,000 on his mom’s marble headstone. He spent $30,000 on his little brother’s headstone. He spent $5,000 on a gravedigger to dig up his father and give him his bones. He threw them out the window of his car as he drove to North Dakota.

They kiss.

The following morning John’s trying to figure out where the TV remote is as he gives the master bedroom over to Kayce and Monica. Monica says the cabin’s fine, but John won’t take no for an answer. He wants them to do whatever they want to the room to make it their own.

John takes his clothes and a box out to the cabin that was his son Lee’s home. Framed photos of him and Lee bring John to tears, and he assures his dead son he’s not getting rid of his clothes as he places his own in the closet.

Later that day, Jamie’s working removing hay from a truck when John pulls up with Tate and Rip. They have Tate’s new horse and let him loose in the ring. John reminds Tate that how he treats the horse will determine how his horse’s life goes. Tate names him Lucky and John agrees it’s a good name.

Beth and her assistant Jason are working late when men arrive unannounced. They’re wearing masks and have guns, and immediately knock out Jason. One grabs Beth by the neck and she stabs him repeatedly in the face and neck. They punch and kick her while she’s down as she struggles for breath.

Beth managed to get a text off to Rip before the men attacked and as he’s driving, he attempts to call her. She doesn’t respond and he’s furious, aware she’s in trouble.

Beth and Jason come to and discover they’re tied up. A gun’s pointed at Jason’s head and he whimpers. Beth tells him to look at her. She doesn’t want him to give the men the satisfaction of seeing him scared. One man tells her he’s there to scare her and when she wishes him luck, he shoots Jason in the face.

Beth screams and cusses him out. The man she stabbed says he’s bleeding out and she’s glad. She taunts the man who threatens to rape her, and he whips her in the face with his gun. She slips from the chair, blood dripping from her head.

He unties her and slams her on a table to rape her. She continues to put on a brave act, calling out his tiny penis and refusing to act scared. He places the gun under her chin and warns her family will never see her face again because he’s going to blow it off. She screams at him to do it and continues to refuse to say she’s scared.

As Beth screams, Rip arrives and launches his attack. The gunman shoots but Rip’s a raging bull. He shoots the injured attacker and then knocks the other man to the floor, repeatedly banging his head on the ground.

He then comforts Beth but stops as he realizes he’s shot in the side. While he makes a call to John asking him to come to Beth’s office with a doctor no one knows about, Beth picks up a heavy piece of crystal and bashes in her attacker’s head.

Rip grabs Beth again, telling her he loves her. She cries in his arms as she hugs him.

John, Kayce, Jimmy, and the doctor arrive, and the doctor needs to take Rip to his office to cauterize the wound. John thanks him and although the doctor has no idea how it will all stay hidden, John assures him it will.

As Jimmy and Kayce help Rip to his feet, John attempts to ask his daughter if she was raped. She doesn’t answer the question and instead insists she needs to go with Rip.

Kayce tells his dad he’ll take care of Jason.

Monica asks where Kayce’s been when he shows up in bed, and he doesn’t exactly lie when he says there were wolves he needed to take care of.

The next morning Malcolm makes his morning cup of coffee and then enters his living room. He appears shocked as he looks outside. He heads outdoors and sees the two men he sent to attack Beth, naked, covered in blood, and dead. They’ve been hung up by their arms and there’s a knife pinning a note to one’s chest. It reads: “Return to Sender.”

At the ranch, John and Kayce have a talk about the Beck brothers. When Kayce asks what they’re going to do, John replies, “We’re going to kill them, son.”

The Good Place Season 4 Interview: Manny Jacinto on Saying Good-Bye to the Popular Comedy Series

NBC’s The Good Place cast made one final trip to the San Diego Comic Con in support of the series’ upcoming fourth and final season. The panel was an emotional one for The Good Place stars Kristen Bell, Ted Danson, D’Arcy Carden, William Jackson Harper, Manny Jacinto, and Marc Evan Jackson. Equally emotional were the roundtable interviews that followed.

Sitting down for his final San Diego Comic Con for The Good Place, Manny Jacinto spoke about what he’ll take away from the experience of being a part of the award-winning comedy’s cast. Jacinto also revealed what he’ll miss most about the Emmy nominated series.

Season four is set to premiere on September 26, 2019.

How sad is it to be saying goodbye?

Manny Jacinto: “Oh my gosh, I don’t know if you all saw the panel but like I almost had to like be, ‘What is that onion smell? I’m not crying, you’re crying!’ I had to literally fight tears because it started to be real. I can’t think about it right now because I’m going to start balling a little bit. But it’s definitely coming to fruition and I’m definitely starting to feel… The more we talk about it, the more I see all these guys, in the back of my head it’s like after this I might not see them for a while. It’s a sad feeling.”

When you look back at the show, this crazy insane show, what are your feelings about what it’s been through and how it’s evolved?

Manny Jacinto: “I don’t know if I would call it the little show that could. I just remember in the beginning, in the first season, I’m just like, ‘It’s so weird!’ There’s so many like weird jokes and so many weird things that we do. All the characters are weird. Are people going to get it? And we had fun; that’s all we could really do. And to see what’s it’s become, to see the little kids that come up to us that are just like smiling ear to ear, the parents that are thankful to us because they get to watch the show with their kids and not having to worry about seeing blood and violence or like any of that R-rated stuff, it’s very special. It’s something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

Yeah, it’s an incredible experience. Hopefully, somehow we’ll get together again and make something happen. Who knows? 10 years from now – a reunion?”

What are you going to miss the most?

Manny Jacinto: “To do a metaphor on this, the whole show or the scenes are almost like a basketball game. It’s like a lot of the times I get to get the ball and do a slam dunk, a lot of times I get to say the joke. Although that is a lot of pressure, I do get a huge kick out of trying to make my castmates laugh or cry laughing. So, I think that’s the biggest thing, the fact that we just get to fool around. And I always try to break them as much as I can. That’s the biggest thing, being able to laugh with these guys.”

What’s next for you? Are you going to go into other television projects?

Manny Jacinto: “I think, yeah, as much as I love Jason and he’s always going to be in my heart, I really just want to exercise other roles. We have Top Gun coming out and we have a bunch of other projects in the works right now. Before all this it was all genre for me. This is my first comedy gig so maybe dive back into that a little bit…and then come back.”
