‘Abraham Lincoln’ – Doris Kearns Goodwin Discusses History’s Documentary Series

History’s latest collaboration with Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin focuses on the United States’ beloved 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. The three-night documentary miniseries premieres on Sunday, February 20, 2022 and features Emmy Award nominee Graham Sibley (Dark/Web) as President Lincoln.

Abraham Lincoln is based on Goodwin’s Leadership: In Turbulent Times and fleshes out many aspects of Lincoln’s incredible life. The miniseries will mix interviews with experts, archival photos, and Lincoln’s own writings to paint a fuller picture of our 16th president’s personality.

Executive producer Doris Kearns Goodwin and Graham Sibley joined executive producer Dave Sirulnick for the 2022 Television Critics Association’s virtual winter press tour to discuss making the seven-and-a-half-hour docuseries.

Doris Kearns Goodwin said the miniseries examines Abraham Lincoln from young adulthood through his death. It will help audiences have a better understanding of what makes Lincoln such a fascinating historical figure.

“You see a man who’s contradictory about whether he’s going to go for emancipation or whether he just is going to go for the union,” said Goodwin. “He’s got all sorts of depression that he’s suffering with his entire life, but humor is the way that he gets his resilience back. He loses that first race for the senate – two races for the senate, a first race for the state legislature – but he keeps going and he finally wins.”

Graham Sibley added, “I think someone who struggles with depression and finds respite in humor is something that is so humble. There’s a sense of humility that goes to that. I think that’s what makes him so accessible, and like Doris says, companionable.”

Sibley plays Lincoln from age 21 through his death at age 56. During the TCA panel, Sibley revealed he didn’t watch any films or series to prepare to play the iconic politician.

“I did the opposite of that. I was terrified that I would be in the wake of Daniel Day-Lewis, so I had to figure out how to take that on,” explained Sibley. “I also am a painter and I felt like, in a way, there’s a world where people paint to figure out how to paint like a master. And so, I did that for a while. I really wanted to embody [him]. I wanted to figure out how he did it. And then, I wanted to throw all that away and cross-reference it with my own research and connection.”

Doris Kearns Goodwin confessed that initially the thought of writing about the “Moby Dick of American history” was scary, yet she found Lincoln scholars to be extraordinarily helpful.

“I hadn’t studied the 19th century, and the incredible thing I found was that the Lincoln scholars were so hopeful. I was able to stand on their shoulders. They introduced me…David Donald, who was one of the great Lincoln scholars…introduced me to his library. He introduced me to fellow historians, and there’s a certain sense in which Lincoln’s desire not to have resentments toward other people or feel jealous of other people or feel envy plays off on all of us who studied him,” said Goodwin.

Goodwin even told Sibley prior to filming that he would come out of the experience a better person.

“You actually said, ‘Graham, this is going to change your life. This is going to change things for you,’ and it has so profoundly changed. Spending this much focused time with Abraham Lincoln, it redefines what you think strength is,” said Sibley. “This experience just asks so much of me and anyone, I think, who spends time with him recognizes the immense struggles that he was under. It demands self-discipline and integrity and honesty, and it just goes on and on and on [with] these major hurdles that he had to overcome. I’m just dangling onto a thread of it trying to put some veil of reality to it. But to imagine what he must have gone through is a lonely, isolating experience – but just a thread of what I’m sure he was going through.”

After five decades of researching great leaders, Doris Kearns Goodwin has concluded they all share certain qualities.

“I think the first one is humility, the ability to acknowledge errors and learn from your mistakes. We’ll see that with Abe Lincoln. He’s going to make mistakes and he’s going to understand them, and you’ll see stories where he moves forward. Empathy is absolutely essential after that, the ability to understand other people’s points of view. And then you’ve got resilience,” said Goodwin. “You go from failure and you keep going and you’re determined. He could hardly go to school and yet he read books in every spare moment he could find.”

Goodwin continued: “And then accessibility. He would have people come in in the mornings to talk to him, and he could hardly get anything done but he’s talking to them as ordinary people. Then the most important thing, maybe – and we need it so much today – his ambition was for the greater good rather than for himself. So when he was about to think he could lose an election in 1864, unless he compromised on slavery, he would not do it. He said, ‘God, I will not do this. I cannot do this.’

His moral purpose overlaid his desire to get power, and I think it’s such an important thing to see today. I think that’s what [Dave] built into the script from the very beginning. It’s the making of a leader. We’re seeing a young person who becomes the person he becomes, and that was in the early stages of the outlines in the treatment, right?”

“Yeah, and I think a sort of organizing principle that we worked with was Abe before Lincoln and that notion that there were many, many years – 50 years of his life – before he became president,” said Dave Sirulnick. “And the idea of understanding him as a man before the achievements, I think for a viewer, you really start to associate with somebody. You understand them. You make a connection with them. And I think through Graham’s performance, you really understand that through the dramatic scenes – our cinematic scenes, as we like to call them – you really understand a connection to Abe. And as Doris was saying, you understand his empathy, and you understand his compassion and his humor and his drive.”

Lincoln’s father never appreciated his scholarly son’s interest in books as child, believing it to be a sign of laziness. Fortunately, Abe’s stepmother was supportive of the boy’s quest for knowledge.

“[…] She acknowledged that he was talented. There was something special in him. She gave him the love that he needed, and I think what you see in that happening, and, again, we see all this because you’re going to see a really young Abe, and then a next young Abe, and you’re going to see him struggling against that background but somehow he got the ambition that he could be something different from what he was. And that’s what happens through literature. Somehow you can envision yourself in another world. Emily Dickinson said there’s no frigate like it to take us lands away, and how true that was. Lincoln’s reading allowed him to think, ‘I can be something different than living on this farm in this hardscrabble way.’”

Goodwin added: “I think that’s the real splendor of the way they’ve done this at the History Channel – and radical. And, of course, Graham as Lincoln, you’re going to watch him every step along the way becoming a leader. It’s so important for young people to see you when you’re in that difficult early time when you’ve got struggles, and then you can persevere and you, through resilience, become the person that Abraham Lincoln did. It gives you a sense of possibility. That’s my real hope for this.”

‘Fresh’ Trailer: Sebastian Stan Has Bizarre Taste in Food

The official trailer for Fresh is so twisted that no matter how many times you watch it, it’s impossible to absorb all that’s going on. The R-rated film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People) and Sebastian Stan (Pam & Tommy) and marks the feature film debut of Mimi Cave.

The cast also includes Jojo T. Gibbs (Twenties), Dayo Okeniyi (See), Andrea Bang (A Million Little Things), and Charlotte Le Bon (Berlin, I Love You).

“Reading Lauryn Kahn’s Fresh for the first time was a ride. There was so much happening so quickly that I had to force myself to slow down and make sure I was really reading thoroughly — not missing a single, wild beat,” stated director Cave. “The script gave me a lot to play with and so much material to sculpt. Once I was on board to direct, I began to zero in on how to tonally approach everything and how to best keep all the many plates of this movie spinning simultaneously.”

Hyperobject Industries’ Adam McKay and Kevin Missick serve as producers. Cave’s behind-the-scenes team includes cinematographer Pawel Pogorzelski, editor Martin Pensa, and production designer Jennifer Morden.

Searchlight Pictures’ Fresh will premiere on Hulu on March 4, 2022.

Steve sweeps Noa off her feet and takes her on a weekend getaway, but Noa soon discovers that Steve has been hiding troubling appetites, and her dream weekend quickly turns into a nightmare.

Zoe Saldana Will Star in Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Special Ops: Lioness’ Series

Zoe Saldana is set to star as a CIA station chief in Paramount+’s Special Ops: Lioness, a new drama series from Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone, 1883, Mayor of Kingstown). Saldaña will also serve as executive producer on the drama which is targeting a June 2022 start of production.

Nicole Kidman and her Blossom Films production company have come on board as executive producers. Tom Brady – no, not the newly retired NFL quarterback – is the showrunner and also executive produces along with David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, Geyer Kosinski, Jill Wagner, and David Hutkin. Special Ops: Lioness will be produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios.

“I am a huge fan of Taylor Sheridan’s work and am honored to help him tell his next amazing story with Lioness,” stated Brady. “Taylor has created an epic, gripping, global spy thriller centered on a group of complex, strong women, and I can’t imagine anyone better to help bring these characters to life than fellow executive producers Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldaña.”

Paramount+ released the following description of Special Ops: Lioness:

Special Ops: Lioness is based on a real-life CIA program and follows a Marine recruited to befriend the daughter of a terrorist to bring the organization down from within.

Zoe Saldaña plays Joe, a strong-willed, hard-nosed station chief of the CIA’s Lioness program, tasked with training, managing and leading her female undercover operatives working to assassinate the world’s most dangerous terrorists.”

Commenting on the casting announcement, executive producer and CEO of 101 Studios David C. Glasser said, “Lioness is based on an incredible, largely unknown program between the CIA and special forces, where U.S. female soldiers would infiltrate the local community and gather intelligence. Taylor has crafted an intense and gripping story within this uncharted world, and we are honored that it will be brought to life on Paramount+ through the acting and producing talents of Zoe Saldaña alongside executive producers Nicole Kidman and showrunner Tom Brady.”

‘1883’ Renewed for Season 2 and ‘1923’ Series Announced

Paramount+ will be continuing to expand the world of Yellowstone‘s Dutton family with the season two renewal of 1883. Created by Taylor Sheridan, 1883 follows John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) ancestors as they make the dangerous trek across the U.S. to settle in Montana. The series holds the record as the most-watched title ever on Paramount+, which should have made the decision to go ahead with another season a real no-brainer.

Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Sam Elliott lead the cast of 1883‘s first season. The series also stars Isabel May, LaMonica Garrett, Marc Rissmann, Audie Rick, and James Landry Hébert.

In addition to renewing 1883, Paramount+ has greenlit 1923. Described as the next chapter in the Yellowstone origin story, 1923 “will follow a new generation of Duttons during the time of western expansion, Prohibition and the Great Depression.”

(Paramount+ officially switched the title from 1932 to 1923 on June 20, 2022.)

“The incredible storytelling and stellar performances behind 1883 have fueled phenomenal new records for Paramount+,” stated Tanya Giles, chief programming officer, ViacomCBS Streaming. “Promoting the series through linear sampling on the Paramount Network during their latest record-breaking season of Yellowstone further enabled us to introduce Sheridan’s loyal audience to this fantastic new series. We look forward to bringing fans even more of the Duttons’ origin story.”

“While most shows franchise near the end of their run, we seized the opportunity to franchise in real-time, to drive record growth for both streaming and linear properties, proving the power of ViacomCBS’ differentiated model,” said Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of ViacomCBS Media Networks and MTV Entertainment Studios. “With the brilliant mind and gifted storytelling of Taylor Sheridan, we have created an entirely new world to explore with 1883 while expanding Yellowstone, and with 1932 we will open up a new chapter in this rapidly growing universe.”

1883 is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios. Series creator Taylor Sheridan executive produces with John Linson, Art Linson, David Glasser, Ron Burkle, and Bob Yari.

1883 Season 1 Plot:

1883 follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. It is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land – Montana.

‘Pieces of Her’ Trailer Starring Toni Collette and Bella Heathcote

Netflix just released an intense official trailer for Pieces of Her starring Oscar nominee Toni Collette and based on the bestselling novel by Karin Slaughter. The official trailer finds Collette playing a mother whose quick actions to save her daughter prompt questions about her life she’d rather keep secret.

In a recent interview with Vogue, Collette revealed she was surprised by the emotional toll the role took on her. “Every scene was more emotionally demanding than I anticipated,” said Collette. “I had no idea how intense it was going to be and was truly exhausted by the end. I think I let myself get fooled, because I might not have done it if I knew where it would take me.”

The series stars Bella Heathcote (The Man in the High Castle) as Andy, daughter of Collette’s character, Laura. Jessica Barden, Jacob Scipio, Joe Dempsie, Aaron Jeffery, Omari Hardwick, Gil Birmingham, David Wenham, Calum Worthy, Nicholas Burton, and Terry O’Quinn also star.

Charlotte Stoudt is the showrunner and executive produces with author Karin Slaughter, Janice Williams, Leslie Linka Glatter, Minkie Spiro, and Made Up Stories’ Bruna Papandrea, Steve Hutensky, and Casey Haver. Spiro is the series’ director.

Pieces of Her premieres on Netflix on March 4, 2022.

Netflix released the following description of Pieces of Her:

“In a sleepy Georgia town a random act of violence sets off an unexpected chain of events for 30-year-old Andy Oliver and her mother Laura. Desperate for answers, Andy embarks on a dangerous journey across America, drawing her towards the dark, hidden heart of her family.”

‘Barry’ Season 3 Debuts Photos and Announces Premiere Date

Barry Season 3
Bill Hader stars in ‘Barry’ season 3 (Photograph by Merrick Morton/HBO)

By the time season three of HBO’s critically acclaimed comedy series Barry premieres, it will have been three years since the end of season two. My suggestion: binge-watch that season before tuning in to the season three premiere on April 24, 2022 (unless your memory’s much better than mine).

HBO’s announcement of the third season premiere date was accompanied by a batch of new photos along with the season three plot description:

“Desperate to leave his violent past behind in favor of his newfound passion, Barry (Bill Hader) is attempting to untangle himself from the world of contract killing and fully immerse himself in acting. But getting out is messy. While Barry has eliminated many of the external factors that pushed him towards violence, he soon discovers they weren’t the only forces at play. What is it about his own psyche that led him to become a killer in the first place? Season three finds Barry and the other characters trying to make the right choice.”

In addition to Bill Hader, Stephen Root returns as Monroe Fuches, Barry’s former handler who is currently in hiding. Sarah Goldberg reprises her role as Sally, Barry’s girlfriend. Anthony Carrigan’s back as Noho Hank, head of the Chechen mob in LA. And Emmy winner Henry Winkler returns as Gene Cousineau, Barry’s former acting teacher who’s in mourning over the loss of his girlfriend Detective Janice Moss.

Season three also features Sarah Burns as Detective Mae Dunn, D’Arcy Carden as Natalie Greer, and Michael Irby as Cristobal.

Alec Berg and Bill Hader created the series and serve as writers, directors, and executive producers. Aida Rodgers and Liz Sarnoff also executive produce, with Julie Camino producing. Emma Barrie, Jason Kim, Emily Heller, Duffy Boudreau, and Liz Sarnoff are season three writers.

The third season’s eight episodes will air on Sundays at 10pm ET/PT.

‘Dog’ – Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin Interview

Dog Star Channing Tatum

Channing Tatum and his producing partner Reid Carolin make their feature film directorial debuts with Dog, a buddy road trip comedy starring Tatum (“Army Ranger Jackson Briggs”) and Lulu the Belgian Malinois. Both Briggs and Lulu are suffering from PTSD from their time in the military, with Briggs also recovering from a traumatic brain injury that’s forced him to remain stateside.

Briggs is so desperate to get back to active duty that he agrees to drive Lulu over 1,000 miles to her friend/handler’s funeral in Arizona. Unfortunately for Briggs, Lulu isn’t the ideal travel buddy. Her time in the military has left her with severe behavior problems that Briggs is ill-equipped to handle. Fortunately for audiences, the pair’s crazy antics provide plenty of laughs while telling a heartwarming tale of two lost souls who save each other.

Tatum’s always loved dogs and Dog was actually inspired by an experience with his beloved dog Lulu. “I guess the inspiration or the theme of the movie came from an experience I had with my first dog. I had dogs my whole life, but Lulu was my dog that I raised from like six weeks old. She was just a little tiny ball of fur and grew into a big strong, Catahoula Pitbull mix. She lived about 11 years, she got sick, [and I] took her on a road trip in some of her last days. And I had some really profound, sort of lessons in those last days with her of just like surrendering and acceptance,” said Tatum during a virtual press conference.

“I came back and told my buddy about the trip and we kind of started talking about the story. We played around with that actual story of the sort of bucket list trip of a dog and his owners or his buddy and it just was a little too sad. It wasn’t really emblematic of me and Lulu, me and Lulu’s life together. Our life was an adventure,” explained Tatum. “It was joyful and funny and hilarious and crazy at times. And that’s the kind of story that we wanted to tell, so went in this direction.”

Channing Tatum dug up a classic film reference, joking that the relationship between Briggs and Lulu mirrors that of Ryan O’Neal and Tatum O’Neal in 1973’s Paper Moon. “It’s sort of like Paper Moon. She’s like my daughter,” said Tatum, laughing. “No, I’m kidding. Our dynamic is pretty simple. Like in the beginning, Briggs, really, this is not his dog and he is a little bit put out that he even has to do this to get the recommendation that he feels like he overly qualifies for for all the experience that he’s put in as far as his career goes.

He has to do it; it’s his only real option. And then like any good guy that’s going on a road trip, [he] wants it to be fun. He is trying to have as much as fun as possible and Lulu was just kind of becoming an issue at every step of the way.”

Pulling double duty as both actor and co-director – especially when his main co-star was a dog – was a difficult task for the first-time director. Tatum confessed he liked setting things up more than the actual experience of directing. That could be because he spent more time directing the dog while Reid Carolin directed him.

“It was definitely fulfilling,” said Tatum. “I can say I scratched that itch and tried to direct a movie. And if I ever do it again, I definitely won’t be in the movie. Editing, I did not like. There was no enjoyment in editing. I should never edit myself, period. I found out that was mentally an unhealthy thing for me.”

The Dogs of Dog

Three Belgian Malinois take on the job of playing Lulu in the film, with each dog selected for her ability to perform specific tasks or tricks. Britta, Zuza, and Lana share screentime with Channing Tatum, and he describes his canine co-stars as smart working dogs who are “on” all the time.

“Belgian Malinois are primarily – and Dutch Shepherds, which they’re basically the same dog…they’re just different colors – are primarily the work dogs in these high-level, multipurpose canine spots for all the teams, like Navy SEALS, Rangers, and Special Forces. On any of the teams, these are like the ultimate tool.

If you’ve not been around them, they are different animals; they are not your normal dog. It’s hard to describe it. Like their brains, their minds work so fast. I liken it to when a cat sort of sleeps all day and then does something so fast that you can’t even quite understand how they just did it so fast. You’re just like, ‘What just happened?!’ And because a cat can move really fast, their mind works really fast when it wants to. These dogs are like that 100% of the time.

They’re switched on. They love working. They want to constantly be doing something. They’re almost like a shark, sort of just like pace and just be like, ‘What are we doing, what are we doing, what are we doing, what are we doing?!’” said Tatum, laughing.

Tatum owns a Dutch Shepherd now and says her personality’s very much like that of a Belgian Malinois. “You can’t go to the bathroom without her being like, ‘I’m coming with you – this is what we’re doing.’”

The dogs cast in Dog genuinely wanted to do their jobs. “They never got tired. They never didn’t want to do a stunt. They were just ready to rock the whole time,” recalled Tatum. “I’ve worked on other movies that had little moments with other animals that – other than horses…horses are generally amazing to work with – but dogs and cats? No. These are the only dogs I’ll work with.”

Tatum explained Lana was the smallest, Britta was in the middle size-wise, and Zuza was the largest dog playing Lulu. Britta had the honor of being the “hero dog” – the one who did a lot of the acting.

“Zuza does a lot of like the wild stuff. We taught her some of the really kind of crazy pulling on the leash and wild things. Lana was the only one that would lay on her side and lay down. These dogs generally don’t love to lay down and do things like that. So, they all were kind of really specific for how we used them,” said Tatum. “I bonded probably the most with Britta because I had most of the really close acting with her.”

One of the funniest scenes in Dog involves Tatum attempting to grab a quick drink of water from a plastic bottle. Britta had the honor of being Lulu in the scene and did an amazing job of lunging from the back of the SUV through the opening between the driver’s seat and front passenger seat and grabbing the bottle before Tatum can take a sip.

“That was fun because we were losing the light and everybody was saying, ‘You need to get out of here. There’s no time. It’s just too complicated. We’ll never get the dog to do this right.’ And we were with a skeleton crew up in the woods in Santa Cruz [and] the rain was coming.

We were like, ‘Let’s just give a shot. Just set the camera up in the front and hopefully we’ll get [it].’ And, I mean, first take. Done. Second take, done. Amazing,” said Carolin. “And it was really funny.”

“It was wild. I’m so happy I still have my fingers from that one as well. She’s like a rattlesnake. It was crazy,” said Tatum, laughing. “And by the way, still to date, if you have a plastic bottle anywhere around, any time Britta comes on set everybody’s got to hide their bottles because she will snatch it. She’s just like, ‘I know this trick!’”

The Bond Between Handlers and Their Canine Partners

Special ops soldiers provided co-directors Reid Carolin and Channing Tatum with incredible access. Carolin and Tatum’s special relationship with canine handlers began when they executive produced the HBO documentary War Dog: A Soldier’s Best Friend.

“Our friendships with them continued into this movie,” said Carolin. “And those guys were on set with us for a lot of the movie. They’re with us now doing press. Their dogs are always around.”

Reid hopes the film helps people understand just how extraordinary the bond is between soldiers and their dogs.

“[…] One of the things we heard from all the guys in our film, our documentary, is that the dog became more than just a dog. It became a person, a soldier, a brother, a sister. It was not looked at as a dog inside that unit. I hope that by the end of the story, both Jackson Briggs, our main character, and the audience feel that way about Lulu. It’s why we called the movie Dog,” explained Carolin.

Carolin continued: “I mean, I think people look at the title and go, ‘Oh, you came up with it in a marketing meeting or something like that because it tested really well.’ In truth, it’s quite the opposite. It’s about the way we clinically look at these animals; we label them just as animals. And over time, the more extraordinary they become to us, the deeper we see them, the more they become just like us.”

HBO’s just debuted the first batch of photos from the upcoming television adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger’s bestselling novel The Time Traveler’s Wife. The six-episode first season stars Rose Leslie as Clare Abshire – the titular character – and Theo James as Henry DeTamble, the time traveler.

The cast also includes Desmin Borges as Gomez and Natasha Lopez as Charisse.

HBO hasn’t announced a confirmed date but said they’re targeting a spring premiere.

David Nutter (Game of Thrones) directs and serves as an executive producer. Steven Moffat (Doctor Who), Joseph E. Iberti, Sue Vertue, and Brian Minchin also executive produce.

Niffenegger’s novel was previously adapted for the screen in 2009. Robert Schwentke directed and Eric Bana played Henry with Rachel McAdams starring as Clare. That film, which currently sits at 38% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes, grossed $101 million during its worldwide theatrical release.

HBO released the following description of season one:

“An intricate and magical love story, adapted by Steven Moffat from the much-loved novel by Audrey Niffenegger and directed by David Nutter, The Time Traveler’s Wife tells the story of Clare and Henry, and a marriage with a problem… time travel.”
